Book Description

Harry Seidler's photo journal of world architecture

Architect Harry Seidler has spent more than 50 years traveling the globe, extensively photographing the peak achievements in architecture from 3000 B.C. to the present day. Thanks to sound advice given to him early on by his photographer brother, Marcell ("Only use Leica cameras and Kodachrome film, which is archival"), Seidler's hobby quickly developed into a passion and, finally, an impressive archive of world architecture. Including, of course, many of the world's most famous architectural structures, Seidler's photographs illustrate the history and style-country by country-of architecture in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Divided into chapters by country, each with a brief introduction outlining its architectural history, Grand Tour offers armchair travelers, students, architecture buffs, and historians the opportunity to browse the buildings of the world through one man's photographs-the fruits of a passionate, half-century endeavor.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful 'art' book with a travelling and architecture theme - a feast for the eyes.......2007-09-24

Some travellers notice people, others notice the differences in landscapes and natural formations, still others notice weather and climate and how it differs from their home, and yet others are hungry for the living culture of food and music they find in foreign places. And then there are those travellers who notice the architecture in each place they visit. Harry Seidler was the latter type. He travelled the world, and with his architect's eye, he noticed and photographed the famous and not-so-famous structures and buildings that appealed to him. These photos were then compiled into this pretty book.

Both Taschen and Phaedon, as publishers, are noted for their beautiful niche art and coffee-table books. This book is no exception; providing a series of beautifully photographed famous and/or architecturally significant buildings from around the world. This is not a theoretical nor an analytical book - and thank god, as there are plenty of those in the market already. This is an art book (i.e. a colour glossy photo book).

This is a book produced for the joy of looking at beautiful or significant buildings from across the world, across cultures and across the centuries. Apart from a brief written introduction accompanying each section, the reader is left free to enjoy the pictures, to travel in the imagination, to marvel at the architectural richness of the world, and most importantly, to make up our own minds as to the historical and aethetic worth of the different constructions on offer.

One need not be knowledgeable in architecture to enjoy this book. You only need an eye for beauty and an appreciation for human ingenuity and engineering. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A personal journey.......2005-03-27

Harry Seidler is Australia's greatest living architect. His award winning domestic and international works are represented in a number good books. This book however, is a personal photographic journey through more than 50 years of travel. The photos are taken by Harry himself and the wily observer will even notice family members in some. It is a book that prompts the desire to travel to see unknown (to me at least) buildings that represent great architectural achievements of their time. Of course it also includes the famous and well known architectural wonders. When I am feeling nostalgic for travel and good architecture it is one of the first books I pick up.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING COLLECTION GREAT PICTURES.......2004-04-30

An amazing and wonderful image collection of the greatest architectural master pieces from around the world.

I can only hope to be able to visit a fraction of these places in my own time. Great to be able to see them here!

A must for anyone interested in great architecture and photographs.

2 out of 5 stars good photos only.......2003-12-01

I've previewed some pages of this book on the official site of Taschen. Then I bought this book with the thought that there would be good analysis about those great architectures, since this book entitled with "...an architect's eye". When I got this book I feel a little bit of dissapointment because this book is merely a collection of mostlt "western" architecture photos. With few analysis on these masterpieces,I suggest those who interest in real architectural books go browse Google for pics rather than buying this book.

2 out of 5 stars No discussion or analysis - really just glorified postcards.......2003-11-27

I ordered this book without seeing it first, and I was quite disappointed with it. I am not too familiar with the publisher, but I have just purchased "What Great Painting Say Vols. 1 & 2" by the publisher, and was expecting something along the lines of those books (great books, by the way).

This book is basically photographs only, with bare minimum captioning (building name/location only). No other information at all. I was hoping to see commentary telling me things about the buildings, some sort of architectural evaluation or commentary.

The only reason I give this even two stars is that the photographs are mostly pretty nice.

                    Book Description

The book is a comprehensive guide to understand and mitigate all forms of physical investment risk in commercial real estate transactions - including acquisitions, loans and Wall Street securitized products. No other text before has approached this vast and diverse subject. In addition, the book provides insights that will improve operational efficiency, and increase tenant satisfaction and cash flow. It includes topics ranging from recognizing "investment grade features that generate success" to successfully implementing operational improvements, such as power management strategies, and guaranteed energy saving agreements that really work. Readers discover physical investment parameters that can maximize operating income and tenant satisfaction plus scores of insights into managing durability and obsolescence issues to your economic advantage.

This practical, step-by-step guide offers advice on how to minimize the risk of unplanned maintenance and repairs, improve the operational environment, and attract and retain quality tenants. It describes how to reduce all forms of physical investment risk, reduce operating expenses, spotlight your successes, and pocket the proceeds. Best of all, it provides the keys for doing it all very economically-often for free. What further separates this book apart from any other is that it shows how to assure that your investment properties will outdistance the competition. It dissects the Physical Realm within the context of investment risk issues of importance to buyers, owners, lenders and other investors in commercial real estate products. Loaded with idea generators, example situations, and checklists, this hands-on manual saves readers valuable time and expensive consultant fees. It provides a step-by-step guide to performing a thorough inspection of a property along with all of the major regulatory issues you need to know at your fingertips. It provides templates to establish or upgrade physical investment guidelines and explains reasons for and how to spot premature deterioration - and Much, Much More! It concludes with an Appendix designed exclusively to meet the interest and needs of real estate executives in determining the effectiveness of their organization and another that provides specific guidance to a non-technical manager of technical staff. The hardcover book is handsomely and ruggedly bound and sized at 6" x 9" x 1-1/2" thick to fit into a briefcase for convenient reference during travel.

The book connects physical and financial issues in ways that generate success in:

Hotels - Luxury, Convention & Resort, Business (Downtown, Airport and Suburban), Extended Stay, Budget and Suite Hotels - Including FF & E Issues.
                    Offices - High-Rise, Low-Rise, Single Story.
                    Apartments - Garden, Low-Rise, Mid-Rise, High-Rise.
Shopping Centers - Neighborhood Centers, Community Centers, Regional Malls, and Power Centers.

Affordable Housing Projects - Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Program, Section 42 of the Internal Revenue Code

Anyone involved in commercial real estate, whether in mortgage lending, construction lending, participating loans, commercial mortgage backed securities (CMBS), property acquisition, ownership, or management, will benefit from this book. This includes technical representatives - engineers - architects - non-technical managers of technical personnel - chief investment officers - pension fund managers - property developers - property owners - property managers. Colleges offering real estate courses and curricula will find this book a fine complement to traditional real estate business topics. Architectural and engineering schools may wish to utilize this book as a basis for establishing a curriculum on conducting physical due diligence, as the credentials and skills necessary to conduct physical due diligence presently are not offered in any one curriculum though the workforce engaged in this business is large and growing. The book includes a Comprehensive Subject Index and References along with thoughtful headers to assist in orienting the reader to the subject matter.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference For Commercial Mortgage Lenders and Buyers.......2000-08-14

I was pleased to find a reference book that I can use to find answers in a hurry when problems arise. It provided a nice overview of the "physical risks" and many insights into dealing with them to close the deal with problems. I particularly liked the chapter on Inspecting the Property - it lays out the process in manageble chunks and provides a simple way to take charge of the process even if you know as little about buildings as I do. As a Manager of Acquisitions, I am frequently in a position where I inspect property. I was able to find reference to subjects that I had been able to find little information on elsewhere - like "functional obsolescence", and "polybutylene pipe". The chapter on Investment Grade gives a lot of useful information on the different property types. The index is real good. I took it on a trip to Texas where the property that I visited was being built on land with "expansive clay". I was able to learn about it before a meeting with the owners and engineers and felt real good about that. I got an e-mail from my boss asking if I had ever heard of "gypsum roofs". I found it in the book and wrote back about it. I'm working on a deal with a concrete garage that needs repair and the book has been helpful with that too. I started reading about elevators and what to look for in old systems. I run into that all the time and never found anything else nearly as helpful. Overall, the book does well in providing engineering answers for the deal maker. I recommend it to anyone who deals with commercial property.

                      Book Description

In the first terrifying days of World War I, four British soldiers found themselves trapped behind enemy lines on the western front. They were forced to hide in the tiny French village of Villeret, whose inhabitants made the courageous decision to shelter the fugitives until they could pass as Picard peasants.

The Englishman’s Daughter is the never-before-told story of these extraordinary men, their protectors, and of the haunting love affair between Private Robert Digby and Claire Dessenne, the most beautiful woman in Villeret. Their passion would result in the birth of a child known as “The Englishman’s Daughter,” and in an act of unspeakable betrayal, a tragic legacy that would haunt the village for generations to come.

Through the testimonies of the villagers and the last letters of the soldiers, acclaimed journalist Ben Macintyre has pieced together a harrowing account of how life was lived behind enemy lines during the Great War, and offers a compelling solution to a gripping mystery that reverberates to this day.

At the center of this book is a fascinating bit of history, the story of some of the British troops left behind as the allies retreated in the face of the German onslaught at the start of World War I. My trouble with this book is that this central story is overwhelmed by not especially relevant facts and commentary, making it, at least for me, a difficult read.

                      4 out of 5 stars A little-viewed aspect of World War I.......2007-03-18

This is an interesting book about a chapter of the First World War not often spoken of in the history books. We read a great deal in books about the Second World War how the various civilian populations, and stray lost soldiers, resisted the Nazis, but we read almost nothing with regards to World War I on the same subject. This book recounts a particular incident where 7 British soldiers found themselves caught behind German lines at the beginning of the war, during the first campaign. They hid in a village named Villeret, spending two years there, blending into the local population, making friends, and even in one case falling in love and fathering a child.

The main story of the book surrounds this love affair and the resulting child (still alive when the author wrote the book in 1999). After her birth, the child's father and his comrades were captured and four of them (including the father) were executed. This part of the book, and the subsequent reunion of the family in 1930, is told simply and rather elegantly by the author.

The interesting part of the story, to my mind, was the backdrop to the actual affair. I've always been fascinated by this sort of thing, and the author does a good job of recounting how the French civilians were treated during World War I if they were in territory occupied by the Germans. The Germans apparently looted quite thoroughly (the commander in the story issues a proclamation that eggs are for German officers exclusively!) and shot anyone who showed much defiance. There were French espionage rings operating behind German lines (one figures in the plot, murkily, in the background). There wasn't, however, the concerted effort to kill individual German soldiers and sabotage their operations that there was in the later war.

I enjoyed this book a great deal. I have MacIntyre's other books too, and I intend to read them when I get a chance.

5 out of 5 stars A true story of courage, love and betrayal in World War On.......2004-12-23

This little gem is well researched and well written by an author who tells the tale of a group of British soldiers trapped behind German lines in 1914. The people of a small village, Villeret near the Somme River harbor the men for nearly two years as the Germans press the search for them and other British stragglers. An outstanding tale of love, romance, danger, narrow escapes and brutal suppression by the Germans and it is all true. Finally, after many long months of brutal treatment by the Germans, someone in the village betrays the British. Who betrays them and why? Read the book. You will not be disapointed by this one. A film just waiting to happen.

this book might be for you. seeing as i am but a 10th grade student forced to read this book, i didnt really have a choice. after reading the back of the book, i was actually excited about reading the book but i found what i was hoping for to be much different from the content. i was excited to read about a more social aspect of war(aka the love afair between digby and claire), but it seemed almost casually thrown in at certain places. I didnt really find a character to connect with and nothing about the book was particularly touching. maybe i set my sights too high but this book just wasnt for me.

5 out of 5 stars History at ground level.......2003-07-24

This is a wonderfully written book on several levels. To begin with, and perhaps most importantly, Macintyre is a terrific writer, researcher, and storyteller. This is not a dry history about names and dates, but rather about relationships and the misfortune of living in the wrong area at the wrong time. Macintyre beautifully illustrates the shifting alliances in a small town in France, Villeret, which found itself tucked just behind enemy lines. Into this village come lost English soldiers in the opening months of World War 1, cut off from their divisions and a means of escape. Their impact upon Villeret during their 18-month stay is profound as one of the soldiers, Robert Digby, falls in love with a young French woman. Macintyre helps us understand the prejudices, jealousies, and emotions which shift and change among the townspeople throughout the war. During that time, the Englishmen become a little less loved and revered and their presence becomes resented. The Germans, conversely, become less reviled. Macintyre also deftly weaves the mystery of who betrayed the Englishmen into his tale, giving a convincing argument for his "best guess" at the end. In Macintyre's hands, this history truly comes back to life.

                            Book Description

From Frontier to Backwater follows the interaction of politics, economy, society, and ecology in the upper Senegal valley from the middle of the nineteenth century through the end of World War I. During this turbulent period, the region was transformed from an export-producing area on the frontier of European expansion into a marginal labor reserve. The valley included the sparsely populated regions of Bundu, Khasso, and Gajaaga, along with the societies of Bambuk and Gidimaka in the transitional zone between the Sahara Desert and the Guinea rain forest. Over time, changing French interests constantly shifted the areas of importance, yet settlements along the water routes were generally larger, more economically diverse, and more commercialized. At the middle of the nineteenth century, the diversity and vitality of the economy, along with the growing colonial presence in the heartland, led to the recovery of the upper Senegal Valley after several ecological and war-induced crises. However, the entire region was gradually marginalized. A fall in gum prices, the severe famine of 1913-1914, intensive war recruitment and mobilization efforts, combined with increased permanent migration, sealed the fate of this valley on the periphery of the French colonial empire.

I rarely write reviews, but I LOVE this book! You can actually find the bird you want to identify! I started with Stan's "Birds of Illinois," which was great. Now I am learning the Birds of Wisconsin (some overlap, of course). And with the addition of the CD, now I can learn their calls too. Stan tells you exactly the identifying feature that helps you tell the birds apart--features that you can actually see! And the book is small enough to carry with you when traveling. Thanks, Stan!!!

I rarely pick up this book without putting it down in disgust. The arrangement by color is extremely inconvenient (males and females are often in different sections of the book). The coverege of species is very incomplete and much of the information that is presented as facts is quite questionable. A field guide to the Birds of Wisconsin would be a great asset, but save your money and wait for a more authoritative book. I've added this book to the back forty of my bookcase along with Stan's Wildflowers of Wisconsin.

The book is very informative, since we have a lot of birds in our area where we live. We wanted to know what kind of birds they are and what they eat. We got some bird feeders and houses for them. They are such beautiful birds to see and watch what they're doing. We took some pictures and these birds are the ones that we never have seen in our lives until we moved here....
