Understanding Buildings provides students in architecture and other allied disciplines with a basic introduction to building technology in all its aspects. This general, multidisciplinary text provides an overall explanation of the building process through an examination of underlying principles as well as design examples.
In seven chapters, the book discusses structure, enclosure, climate services, utility services, lighting, acoustics, fire safety, and future needs. It is generously illustrated with 400 diagrams, tables, charts, and construction details.
Esmond Reid is an architectural writer and consultant.
Customer Reviews:
Great for beginners.......2007-09-02
This text is a great introduction to the world of building systems. It spells out in easliy understandable terminology the basics of many systems with great little sketches to boot. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning about how buildings work and are constructed.
Suitable for the General Reading Public.......2005-08-14
I am a fan of architecture with little technical background. I was drawn to this book because I wanted to increase my understanding of architecture by learning how the mechanical systems within buildings work. I began this endeavor with E. Allen's "How Buildings Work: The Natural Order of Architecture", perhaps the best introduction to the subject. Having enjoyed that book, I wanted to get to the next level of complexity.
Esmond Reid's "Understanding Buildings" is an intermediate level book. The writing is at college freshman level and was easy to understand for a reader with no engineering or other technical background. The many line drawings helped immeasurably in getting across basic points.
For the true beginner, I would recommend E. Allen's book. If you like that work, "Understanding Buildings" is an exciting progression in beginning to understand how the buildings we interact with on a daily basis work. Highly recommended.
Hyperboloid Of Revolution.......2004-07-11
This book was written mainly for aspiring architects and civil engineers, and covers almost all types of building systems thoroughly. It is very detailed and has separate chapters for important topics such as structure, climate services, lighting, acoustics, fire safety, etc. Although the author largely stays away from mathematics, he is always clear and concise in dealing even with complex analytical problems. As an example I would give his excellent treatment of two and three-hinged portals, and the fascinating parallels he draws between the engineering ideal of arches and the different types of portals. He covers all major construction techniques from timber platform frame construction (generally of houses), to more complex forms such as the hyperbolic paraboloid (opposed double curvature), and the esoteric "hyperboloid of revolution", the opposed double curvature architecture (almost always in concrete) common in power station cooling towers.
His writing on accessory systems such as heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and fire detection and prevention are both introductory and comprehensive. In all areas from structure to systems he is careful to explain real-world rationale in an approachable format that is both thorough and easy to understand.
This book is wonderful. It should be read by every student in engineering or architecture school (the section in chapter one on stresses is of enormous value to technical students), and I would further recommend it to practicing professionals as an excellent conceptual 'refresher course' of real world building systems wisdom. This is an excellent book.

Building construction and services deftly explained........2003-01-07
It's rare to find an architect who can explain things in such a conversational way. The underlying principles are always laid out, first for a small building and then for a large one, to show the effects of changing scale. For example as the surface area to volume ratio changes, so do heating and cooling demands. And for me it was educational to see the British way of building houses: floor joists over concrete slabs, or brick basements. I learned the dew point drops gradually toward the exterior inside porous materials, and 15 deg east of south is the optimum solar orientation in the Northern hemisphere. And the slogan of the man who invented the revolving door ("It's always closed.")
The second half of the book covers building services--heating, plumbing etc.--concisely, and it becomes apparent the author has plenty of real world experience and is no mere academic. Lighting, acoustics and fire safety finish the book. Even at 20 years old, still educational.

Wildlife Photographer portfolio 12.......2003-11-05
Having just been to our museum to see these actual photographs framed and on display, I knew I wanted to have a record of my visit -- and this book was the perfect answer. I wasn't disappointed! Everything I saw at the museum is contained within this marvellous book along with all of the information photographers would want to know. The pictures are reproduced on high quality glossy paper stock and I share the book with friends who are equally impressed. This is a book you will want to have on display on your coffee table for all to see.
Oh -- and by the way -- did I say I really liked this book?

The thrilling conclusion to a great series!.......2003-04-03
This is the final part of Scott Morse's five-part SOULWIND saga. And it doesn't disappoint.
Things have been building in four interlocking, but not always so chapters and now the breaking point is here.
Morse is an amazing artist and this volume contains some simply beautiful brush work.

Book Description
Information Technology (IT) - the field that links computer and communications equipment and software - is transforming the way modern business is done. Examples of factors leading these changes are: rapidly decreasing costs of computer hardware, government de-regulation, accelerating global competitiveness, an increasing management awareness, and the knowledge of how to employ Information Technology successfully. These have all led to the increase of IT's effects on existing markets, and, in the process, are creating entirely new markets. This book explores a variety of advances in IT by a group of researchers who are at the cutting edge of this research. Moreover, the book examines these innovative developments in terms of the Information Technology field and its effect on modern business. It is becoming increasingly apparent that IT is critical to success in today's competitive marketplace. As a result, this book examines a host of emerging effects at work in these developments and seeks to make sense out of these counter-acting, sometimes multiplicative, effects which can become obstacles for managers who wish to develop competitive applications of IT. These effects and the development of IT are grouped into four general categories in the book: Future Markets, Inter-Organizational Systems, Focused Applications, and Future Strategies.
Book Description
In the country with the widest income gap between rich and poor and where millions of children fend for themselves on city streets, one of the world's most successful grassroots social movements has arisen. To Inherit the Earth tells the dramatic story of Brazil's Landless Workers' Movement, or MST -- millions of desperately poor, landless, jobless men and women who, through their own nonviolent efforts, have secured rights to over 20 million acres of farmland. Not only are the MST fighting for their own rights, they are transforming their society into a more just one--and their approach may offer the best solution yet to Brazil's environmental problems in the Amazon and elsewhere. Authors Wright and Wolford put the movement in its historical, political, and environmental context, trace its growth, and address the issues the MST faces going forward. And throughout, they share dozens of personal stories of people in the movementstories filled with tremendous courage, personal sacrifice, faith, humor, drama, and determination.
Customer Reviews:
Too partial. . ........2004-12-01
The authors of this book are so pro-MST that the last page in the book includes information about where you can send money if you wish to contribute to the movement. It may be true that some land reform is necessary in Brasil, but not in the way the many of the people involved in the MST go about it. Yes, some of the landholders who own large farms and ranches resort to violence to protect their property, but the squatters also aren't afraid of killing people to get what they want. There has got to be a better book out there that tells both sides of the story. This one is too biased.
Got me thinking.......2004-08-31
I have not done much research on the MST, but this book does a great job of highlighting their struggle. The authors are clearly pro-MST and pro-Land Reform, but don't shy away from pointing out the difficulties the MST and their supporters face. I think this book is a must read for those who want to understand the issues surrounding the rural poor who are simply asking for life's basics (a place to call home, food, education). They seem to have been demonized by Brazil's conservatives and large land owners as violent land grabbers. This book gives an "on the ground" account that shows this to be false. I was also impressed by their treatment of the debate between the large agri-business model that the U.S. clearly supports versus the small landholder that actually cares about the land they work. More books like this are needed.
Book Description
The new edition of this classic book describes and provides a myriad of examples of the relationships between problem posing and problem solving, and explores the educational potential of integrating these two activities in classrooms at all levels. The Art of Problem Posing, Third Edition encourages readers to shift their thinking about problem posing (such as where problems come from, what to do with them, and the like) from the "other" to themselves and offers a broader conception of what can be done with problems. Special features include: an exploration of the logical relationship between problem posing and problem solving; sketches, drawings, and diagrams that illustrate the schemes proposed; and a special section on writing in mathematics.
In the updated third edition, the authors specifically:
*address the role of problem posing in the NCTM Standards;
*elaborate on the concept of student as author and critic;
*include discussion of computer applications to illustrate the potential of technology to enhance problem posing in the classroom;
*expand the section on diversity/multiculturalism; and
*broaden discussion of writing as a classroom enterprise.
This book offers present and future teachers at the middle school, secondary school, and higher education levels ideas to enrich their teaching and suggestions for how to incorporate problem posing into a standard mathematics curriculum.
Customer Reviews:
provides a method for exploring mathematical problems as well as posing them.......2007-01-16
The Art of Problem Posing is a great book. The authors provide a step by step method for learning about, and solving problems in, mathematics. The method is as follows:
Level O:
Choose a starting point ie a problem or a concept in math
Level 1:
Define the attributes of a problem or concept
Level 2:
Ask what if not for each concept.
Level 3:
Ask Questions about the results of 0 - 2.
Level 4:
Analyze (solve) the problem
The authors use fairly accessible math in the process of explaining their techniques, including the Pythagorean Theorem and a few other concepts that most people will know.
I want to emphasize that this book is not just about problem posing; it also offers a technique for problem solving. The authors note that the two cannot really be completely separated.

Book Description
In Secret Aircraft Designs of the Third Reich aircraft biographer David Myhra gives the reader much more than pictures of proposed German aircraft projects, although this work is richly illustrated by state-of-the-art digital images by Mario Merino. The total number of German projects is in excess of 400. Blohm und Voss tops the list with over 200 project designs. The reader is introduced to the men behind these proposed aircraft. One will discover Wolderman Voight's frustration with his Me P.1101 and why it simply would not jell. The reader will learn why Dr. Gthert of Gotha lobbied the RLM to take his Go P.60 designs and scrap the Horten Ho 229. We see why critics of design genius Alexander Lippisch said that he was a man who had a new design almost every day but fails to put most of them into the air. Myhra describes the shameful handling of Hugo Junkers, the father of German aviation, by the Gestapo. It was Junkers who said that "ideas for advanced aircraft projects were about as cheap as blueberries. To an idea must be added materials, resources, and time." And time in all the secret projects was short, very short. Although over 400 aircraft projects were on the drawing board when the war in Europe ended in May 1945, only a handful were in the prototype stage. This outstanding book also offers a superb collection of photographs of scale models from contributors throughout the world, and digital images by Mario Merino and Andreas Ott that offer a one-of-a-kind look at secret German designs., over 1000 b/w photographs and color illustrations, 9" x 12"
Customer Reviews:
Pixilated.......2004-01-28
Probably the most thorough treatment of projected German aircraft, Myhra's book also suffers from inexplicable lapses: pictures are duplicated, line drawings are pixilated, and illustrations often so jumbled that one does not always know which plane is being described. The use of models and digital imaging is appreciated, but there is so little editorial control over layout that any benefit is lost. A great muddle of a book that even includes a photograph of a Messerschmitt sewing machine. If only it had been better edited.
Secret Aircraft Designs of the Third Reich.......2000-12-05
David Myhra gives the reader an unsurpassed look at the technological brilliance of the Third Reich. History buffs and aviation enthusiasts alike will be astounded by the rare photographs included in the book as well as stories behind the designs, which sometimes surpass the wildest fiction one could imagine. The most complete book on Nazi X Planes(especially in terms of visual content)"Secret Designs" makes you feel glad that Hitler and Goering made so many crucial mistakes that prevented many of these planes from ever becoming airborn and wringing havoc with the less advanced American designs of WWII.
Very Good, but could be improved.......1999-01-05
Myhra has produced an excellent summary of German advanced aircraft designs during the "Third Reich". What sets this work apart from similar offerings by Masters and Schlick and Meyer is the coverage given to the designers of the aircraft and the companies which built them coupled with the use of colour photographs of scale models. On the down side, the book could have done with more proof reading to remove some of the repetition in the text and numerous minor typo's. It was also let down by some very poor quality illustrations, some of the line art looks like it was drawn using a ZX Spectrum home computer from the early '80's. In general the illustrations are poorly organised and of greatly variable quality. I would hope that a second edition would correct these minor flaws, a tie up with Dan Johnson's excellent web site, Luft 46 would allow the illustrations to be greatly improved.
