Product Description
From August 2001 to February 2002, the Austrian conceptual artist Rainer Ganahl, who lives and works in New York, created a series of drawings entitled "Die letzten Tage der Sigmund Freud Banknote" (The Last Days of the Sigmund Freud Banknote). This series is in reference to the introduction of the Euro as the new Austrian currency and the discontinuance of the Austrian 50 Schilling banknote, which bears a portrait of Sigmund Freud. In consideration of Freud's importance for dream analysis, Ganahl recorded his dreams each morning until February 28, 2002, when the Schilling ceased to be a legal tender in Austria. Each drawing contains one 50 Schilling note, the dream and its associations, as well as the daily recorded value of the 50 Schilling banknote in different currencies and the number of books on sale at major online booksellers, Amazon.com and Buecher.de. With an introduction by the artist and texts by Paul Mattick, professor of philosophy at Adelphi University, and Sylvère Lotringer, General Editor of Semiotext(e), and a professor at the Center for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University. 100 color plates.

A Masterwork of Biography.......2005-11-25
I bought this book at the Amon Carter along with the companion VHS back when it came out. The book is a beautifully produced, very comprehensive biography in words and photos of this great photographer. Like a few others, Ms. Gilpin managed to live long enough to be appreciated in her lifetime. Her life is a study in adversity and obligation. She came from a family with a father who was a poor provider and a great dreamer. In fact, well into her adulthood, she was the supporter of her family. She was a lesbian who had a relationship with another for decades, but by the time they were able to share a home in their middle age, her partner suffered declining health and Laura supported them both. She worked hard and consistently over decades supporting herself mainly through photography, but during the Depression even had a turkey ranch! Nothing in this difficult life dampened the spirit and good humor and independence of this large, strong woman. Her love of the Southwest in landscape, and her documentary photography of the Pueblo and Navajo Indians, radiates through her work. Along with this volume, purchase her masterwork, "The American Navaho". It is a remarkable work, moreso when one realizes that she created this with virtually no support from anyone else. This book can serve as an inspiration not only for photographers, but anyone else who respects human strength and spirit.

Bilal's Continued Artistry.......2007-06-12
In the Beast Trilogy, Enki Bilal has maintained the level of artistry that I discovered in my first readings of Metal Hurlant, as published in France from the 1970's. The artist also delivers a satisfying science fiction yarn, retaining the socio-political commentary that typified most of Hurlant's graphic tales.
Amazing.......2006-03-01
I think this is one of the greats. A lot of "cyberpunk" graphic novels are out there, but this is at the top of the pile, no question. Not only is it unique in its story, and the level of complexity and genuine deepness it offers up, but Bilal's artwork is simply stunning.

Book Description
Information (data) security is of ever increasing importance to both businesses and individuals and the extent and value of electronic data is growing exponentially. The commercial viability and profitability of enterprises of all sizes increasingly depends on the security, confidentiality and integrity of their data.
In particular, the future of e-commerce depends on data being secure, accessible and complete across the Web. Ultimately, consumer confidence will depend on how secure they feel their personal data is. Data security is now a critical consideration in all aspects of business - affecting decisions on contracting staff and ensuring customer loyalty, as well as pure IT issues. In addition, new laws and regulations give directors of public companies a legal responsibility to act on computer security. No handbooks currently available guide the businessperson through the maze of issues or through the process of achieving international standard (ISO) certification in Information Security Management. This book fills this gap and covers all aspects of data security, providing the reader with sufficient information to understand the major issues and how to minimize risk.

- Covers every step in the process, from first repairs to picking an agent to closing the sale
- Poses all the questions sellers need to ask themselves, their agents, appraisers, escrow officers, and contractors
Customer Reviews:
Front cover off base-.......2006-08-21
The cover text reads "Room-by-room do and don'ts for increasing the value of your home" - I was disappointed there is nothing in here that even resembles a room by room checklist. The bathroom in mentioned once in the first chapter as is the kitchen and garage- (that's it!)- More legal mumbo jumbo than anything else. I was specifically looking to prep my home for sale not the actual sales process. If you want the legal stuff- this is it.
Book Description
Parents die. At any age, the loss of a parent marks a profound and often overlooked transition in life. When the parent leaves a young child to grow up without guidance, nurturing, goading, and love, the event becomes a landmark, a defining moment.
When authors Leslie Simon and Jan Johnson Drantell learned of their common experience of losing a parent at a young age, they set out to discover the experiences and effects that unite those who have lived through this same signal event. "Every tragedy has its before and after," they write. "One day a child's life feels normal, the next it feels as if the world has torn apart."
This is a rent that can never be repaired, a wound that despite the passage of time and the coming of age never truly heals. In A Music I No Longer Heard, Simon and Drantell have collected the voices of seventy men and women who share this poignant life's journey. "Even three or four years later," the noted filmmaker Ken Burns remembered, "my wish would be that my mother would come back. I think I just submerged the fact that she had died."
As life progresses, the authors point out, every new experience is filtered through the lens of loss. The dead parent remains a vibrant presence in these lives: "My relationship with my father doesn't seem finished, or sealed." Or in the words of another, "I feed myself with memories of my mother. I think about her and it is just a wonderful feeling."
Most of all, these children of loss experience adulthood differently, always compensating in some way when choosing a mate or a career, in developing the ability to trust and to love, and in the willingness to take risks and live life to the fullest. "Maybe my dad's death, in some small way," one woman wonders, "helped me to wake up and see what the world is, what the world could offer."
What emerges from these stories is a moving portrait of the many and various ways that the death of a parent shapes one's life. A Music I No Longer Heard will be therapeutic for those who have lost a parent and will enable those who have not to understand the complex emotions that surround this all too common experience.

Helpful it spoke to me.......2005-04-22
I first encountered these two authors on a KGO radio interview.
The interview focused on people who had lost a parent in childhood (before the age of 18). They were discussing how even though the grief process had taken place for most people in adulthood, the life choices that these adults had made were directly impacted by the early loss of a parent.
The book is well written, done in case study and anecdotal style. It is one that remains on the shelf, a keeper. One that I open from time to time to learn from and heal.
An absolute must read for anyone struggling with this issue.......2002-12-08
I borrowed this book from the public library last year while a close friend of mine was dying of cancer. She left behind a 7 year old son and 4 year old daughter; the anquish in the book and in my heart was too much and I had to send it back nearly unread.
I borrowed it again a few weeks later when I had to write a term paper on death and grieving. As I read the experiences of the varied ages of participants I began to see the patterns, thoughts, and stereotypes of each generation relating to death. This was of particular significance to me because my paternal grandmother died in 1967 of cancer, when my father was 18 years old, and his sisters 12 and 13. As I read what other adults my family's ages were and who lost parents in the '60s, I began to understand my father and his sisters from a different point of view. I never fully understood how devestating an impact loosing a parent so early can be to a child - for the rest of his/her life. This is a must read if you know anyone who is loosing or has lost a parent before the age of 20.
Lots of emotion, little substance.......2001-09-20
I bought this book for research for my English thesis on motherloss and girls/women in adolescent literature. For that reason, I found that "A Music I No Longer Heard" was lacking in substance. The authors did relay a tremendous amount of anecdotal evidence of the impact of early parent loss, but there just did not seem to be much scientific/psychological support, nor did the authors assert any new theories/ideas about early parent loss. I found Maxine Harris' book, "The Loss that is Forever" to be much more helpful and inclusive.
This book made me cry for hours..........2000-10-18
I have been looking for a book like this, literally all my life. I stumbled upon it in a very large library and immediately checked it out. I lost my father in a car accident at 10 days old. While many of the stories are from people who actually did have a chance to know their fathers, there were a few stories for me as well. It was such a revelation to realize that I'm not alone; that so many others have felt and gone through the same things that I have. I recommend this book highly to anyone who has lost a parent.
Helpful stories from real people.......2000-04-26
I know from personal experience that when a parent dies, people often feel like they are completely alone in this world. Reading the stories from people who had gone through similar experiences can sometimes help with the healing process. The authors of this book do a wonderful job of capturing the turmoil and emotions that accompany the death of a parent. The result made me cry, sometimes, but if also helped me along in the long process of healing. I have read some other books about the death of parents which focus more scientifically on the sociological effects of the event. For me, this book was more effective because it was more personal. If you are going through the pain of parent loss, or know someone who is going through the experience, I recommend this book. It won't solve all the problems, of course, but it may help just a little.

Book Description
The night before, a Japanese seaplane under cover of darkness, landed on the other side of the harbor - unnoticed. In the early morning, he took off and dove at a liberty ship, a short distance off Sweetbrier's port bow. The area wasn't even alerted - not a single shot was fired. He just came over the top of the mountain, picked out the liberty ship and dove right into it. Men were killed and damage was done. Our lookouts saw it all; it was a single float seaplane.
Radio Tokyo summarizing multiple raids on this date, claimed that they had sunk: one battleship, two cruisers, and two transports in this harbor - it didn't happen. Thus ended a busy month of almost daily air raids. Frequently there were multiple raids each day and night interrupting our scheduled navigational work. During this month of May 1945 there were 68 GQs representing 73 hours and 43 minutes at battle stations.
Includes chapters on devastating enemy attacks at Okinawa on LST 808 and battleship Pennsylvania.

Oral History At Its Best.......2005-12-28
This is a terrific oral history of a workhorse Coast Guard cutter in WWII told by its radioman, Tanney Oberg. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Oberg at a Coast Guard event this past year and he is a delightful man as well as a gifted writer in the Studs Terkel style. If you like oral histories (i.e. Terkel's "The Good War" and his other work) you'll enjoy this book. It's an easy and facinating read.
If you're looking for dramatic tales of Halsey, Nimitz, MacArther and other fellows with stars on their collars cutting their way through the Pacific to converge on Japan you won't find it here. This is a story of working Joes on a hard working warship doing a difficult, unheralded, but important job. Mr. Oberg makes no effort at overdramatizing events or spinning the facts. What you get is the unvarnished truth about life aboard the USCGC Sweetbrier during its war service, including its combat action.
This is a must read for Coasties and a terrific selection for history buffs everywhere. Bravo Zulu Mr. Oberg! Thanks for the wonderful read and thanks to you and your shipmates for your service.
History as it should be written.......2005-09-28
This book is a well written, interesting view of the men who served on this ship and their interactions. It is honest and doesn't gloss over the reality of the real personalities of real people in a difficult period in our history.
Most "History" is bunk (as Henry Ford is credited with saying), and tells the "spin" of the winners and the rich and the powerful. This is a very good example of what history should be. The book also includes chapters on the devastating attacks on USS LST-808 and battleship USS Pennsylvania.
Book Description
In this classic study, Pulitzer Prize-winning author James M. McPherson deftly narrates the experience of blacks--former slaves and soldiers, preachers, visionaries, doctors, intellectuals, and common people--during the Civil War. Drawing on contemporary journalism, speeches, books, and letters, he presents an eclectic chronicle of their fears and hopes as well as their essential contributions to their own freedom. Through the words of these extraordinary participants, both Northern and Southern, McPherson captures African-American responses to emancipation, the shifting attitudes toward Lincoln and the life of black soldiers in the Union army. Above all, we are allowed to witness the dreams of a disenfranchised people eager to embrace the rights and the equality offered to them, finally, as citizens.
Customer Reviews:
A fine book for someone studying the subject.......2007-08-13
I bought this book after watching "Glory" (yet again) and decided to get better informed on the subject of black soldiers in the Civil War. I found the book to be very well done and very well researched. It is all excerpts from interviews, newspaper stories, and speeches given around the time of the Civil War. It really did a good job of showing how the average black man before, during, and a little bit after the Civil War. It really did open my eyes to many injustices the black man suffered during those days and how they overcame them. That said, however, I did find the book did drag a bit in some sections and it wasn't truly what I had been looking for; the stories of black soldier battles and valor was not covered very much and when it was it jumped around a bit. Bottom line, if your looking for a book on the combat black soldiers faced and the battles they were involved in then pick another book, but if your looking for a great overall history of the entire time period concerning black soldiers then this is a good book for you.
A Mixed Bag - Effective, insightful and tedious.......2004-05-15
Synopsis
James McPherson has compiled a fantastic amount of source material concerning how Blacks felt and acted during the Civil War. In the forward McPherson notes that there is "a need for a documentary collection that will present all aspects of the Negro's role in the war largely in the Negro's own words...this book is designed to fill that need." McPherson strings together quote after quote from Black newspapers, letters and speeches with relatively sparse commentary in between.
The book addresses 22 topics - from pre-war commentary on Abraham Lincoln to postwar lamentations about the failure of Reconstruction.
My Review
Unfortunately, the very strength of this book (all of the quotes) made it, at times, a tedious read for me. I found the style of the book to be a chore to read. I'll keep this book in my personal collection of Civil War material because as a collection of source material it is unmatched and I may have need to utilize it when it comes time to get my master's degree. As a history of the Civil War it is effective, informative but ultimately a chore to read.
YES THIS BOOK IS A DELECTABLE TREAT!.......2004-01-03
this book is a delectible treat, and yes i spelled it 2 different ways. A certain DR does not know good literature when it hits him in the face, but this is a greatness piece. The only problem is they shouldnt use the word "nigger" so much, that is naughty, they should use African American or mud baby. AMAZING BOOK infinity stars, including Orion's belt and the sun!!
Definitely a Must Read!!!.......2001-02-19
James McPherson successfully recounts the Negro's feelings and actions during and somewhat after the Civil War. The author uses a compilation of letters written by actual heroes of this revolutionary period to tell a story that is heard by few. Educators often share the many distinct battles and strategies both sides engaged in and created during the war. However, students seldom learn the grand history of the war that could only be learned by giving a broader sense of the account- a feat only accomplished when one studies those who were most affected by the war. Mr McPherson's usage of speeches and actual letters allow the reader to transcend time with the upper hand of hindsight having 20/20 vision! The interjections that McPherson interpolates into the scheme keep the flow of the different works so well tied at times it appears as though the authors worked together on the event. The final essay is more than fitting to end the book as it redefines the Negro's necessity to strive for and never forget the pursuit of freedom and equality. There were instances when it seemed each individual had a secret knowledge that decades later others would read his/her words and learn positive things from the experience. I respect James McPherson for having the courage to write without prejudice but maintain and provide factual evidence that the African-American was not simply rescued but by the blood, sweat and tears of thousands of his brothers and sisters aided in liberating himself. The author gives a refreshing look at the "colored" man as he verifies that he is a citizen by right as well as an important part of the history of the United States whose story should not be neglected by any.
Book Description
The Civil War stands vivid in the collective memory of the American public. There has always been a profound interest in the subject, and specifically of Blacks' participation in and reactions to the war and the war's outcome. Almost 200,000 African-American soldiers fought for the Union in the Civil War. Although most were illiterate ex-slaves, several thousand were well educated, free black men from the northern states. The 129 letters in this collection were written by black soldiers in the Union army during the Civil War to black and abolitionist newspapers. They provide a unique expression of the black voice that was meant for a public forum. The letters tell of the men's experiences, their fears, and their hopes. They describe in detail their army days--the excitement of combat and the drudgery of digging trenches. Some letters give vivid descriptions of battle; others protest racism; still others call eloquently for civil rights. Many describe their conviction that they are fighting not only to free the slaves but to earn equal rights as citizens. These letters give an extraordinary picture of the war and also reveal the bright expectations, hopes, and ultimately the demands that black soldiers had for the future--for themselves and for their race. As first-person documents of the Civil War, the letters are strong statements of the American dream of justice and equality, and of the human spirit.

Book Description
This book refutes the historical slander that blacks did not fight for their emancipation from slavery. At first harshly rejected in their attempts to enlist in the Union army, blacks were eventually accepted into the serviceoften through the efforts of individual generals who, frustrated with bureaucratic inaction in the face of dwindling forces, overrode orders from the secretary of war and the president himself. By the end of the war, black soldiers had numbered over 187,000 and served in 167 regiments. Seventeen were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation's highest award for valor. Theirs was a remarkable achievement whose full story is here told for the first time.

USEFUL BOOK - BUT WITH LIMITATIONS........2007-07-04
First, let me state that I am a big fan of Donald and Lillian Stokes and their many guide books. For the most part, these are all very useful guides and this team has done a great job of bring the wonders of our natural world to us. With this work though, and I consider it thier weakest work, they come up a bit short. I suppose the title "The Complete Birdhouse Book," I feel, is a bit misleading. It is far from "complete." The authors do give us some of the best work I have seen in this area as to bird house placement, care and maintenance. But they come up quite lacking in the area of actually building a bird house! The beginning woodworker will find the scant directions difficult to follow even for the most basic of houses. When they get into the area of "advanced" houses, well, forget it! There are dozens and dozens of books out there that cover this subject much better and are actually useful.
On the other hand, I did find this book to be quite useful in the placement of the house, and very informative as to the nesting habits of several of the birds that use houses to nest, so not all was lost. The book is well organized, the photographs are great and the text easy to read. I am giving this one four stars rather than three simply because of the apparent effort that went into writing this book and simply because these are the Stokes. I just wish they had been more adept in the area of birdhouse construction.
Superb for beginners!.......2007-03-26
Our [....] has recently become very interested in identifying birds. We have tons in our backyard after putting out a feeder, so we wanted to build a house so we can watch them nest--as a beginner, where do you begin?
We orderd this on a whim & because it was only 83 cents on amazon, The Complete Birdhouse Book--The Easy Guide to Attracting Nesting Birds by Donald & Lillian Stokes. When it arrived I was overjoyed with how wonderful this book is--it is full color, talks in-depth about the bird life-cycle with full color pictures & specifically what different birds need in a home--and thus, how to construct it! What beginner ever knew the hole size, hole to floor measurement & inside dimensions & total height were so important--not to mention where it is placed & what type of things to leave in your yard for nesting material! Also, how to control predators & pests & other useful information. Now we know what our titmice, cardinal, chickadees, & hairy woodpecker prefer! Full color pictures again & highly educational---a good companion for anyone wanting to attract birds to their yard!
Our favorite bird guide--the indexing is superb for my [....] trying to find a bird in it--is the Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America. It has good pics of male, female & juvenile & easy to understand maps. We supplement it with the DK Guide to Eastern birds of North America--it has great pictures & info on each bird, the eggs, nesting, food, etc--more detail than just the field guide--very educational! We're loving God's wild world in our back yard!
Just basic stuff...ok for a starter.......2005-04-01
Even though there's only 1 plan, you do learn what some specific needs of some specific birds are. You can buy simple kits to assemble at houses4birds.com
Always a pleasure but..........2002-01-28
I've always liked the Stokes books and CDs. Their love for birds is apparent in all their material. The photographs are rich and lively, and the books are simple yet elegant and informative.
However, if you're interested in building birdhouses, this book will fall short. There's only one plan for the simplest house you can imagine, and anyone who would appreciate the book's other charms probably won't think highly of such a simple birdhouse. There are some interesting houses pictured, but little about how to build them...
Great 4 the basics. Want detailed plans? Go elsewhere........1999-03-31
I want to know the basics...which birds use birdhouses, & what the basic dimensions for my targeted species are. What nesting materials do thew use...etc.. This book does a great job of doing that. I do NOT want my birdhouses to be clones of some boring plan out of a book. Get creative! Use this basic info & create your own unique backyard!
Sorry previous writer was so disapointed, but he's right in one respect......if you want assorted detailed building plans...go elsewhere.
