Excellent! No need to upgrade when a new tool appears........2003-09-26
One of my esteemed reviewer colleagues said, "the book is conceptual, not actionable".
Good concepts are actionable. But leaving this aside, being conceptual is great! There are many books that need an upgrade when a new version of some tool will become available. (For example, there are hundreds of UML-specific books.)
This book is not tool-dependent, and it will remain valuable for a long time to come. It shows all of us where to start and how to proceed when we have to write business requirements. In particular, it shows what can be reused, so we do not have to start from a blank sheet of paper. And when we read the clear, precise and concise business specifications shown in the book, we can see the difference between these specifications and volumes of "too much stuff" presented as business requirements and not read by anyone.
It is a pity that the author shows business patterns only from finance, more are needed from other business areas.
20/20 Hindsight.......2002-05-29
One valuable lesson I learned is to read reviews before buying books.
I recently discovered business rules as a methodology and have been buying every book on the subject that I can find. This book looked like it would give useful information, but didn't. There may be a few good ideas buried within, but they are hidden by academic prose and ideas that are just not implementable in the real world. Anyone who claims they have implemented a business specifications or business rules approach based on this book is glossing over the major surgery that would be needed to accomplish such a feat.
Not only is the book dull and filled with indecipherable passages and a lot of fluff, the notation is weak. I recommend getting Tony Morgan's BUSINESS RULES AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS, which clearly explains what this book fails to, and uses the more standard UML as the notation language.
If you still insist on getting this book, at least you've been warned.
Too little, too muddled and too late.......2002-05-16
This book has some good ideas, but the author's inability to express them in a coherent manner hid them from all but the most persistent. What I liked about the book was the concepts and the attempt to develop a notation for expressing them. What I didn't like was the wordiness and inscrutabile writing style and the complete lack of reference to work done by Ronald G. Ross, which had a growing following. In addition, the unwillingness to use standard notation, like UML or even IDEF0, further relegated the good ideas in this book to obscurity.
Reasons to consider alternatives:
* the book is conceptual, not actionable
* it's been overcome by business rules, which were in existence when it was written, but ignored by the author (or he was unaware of the existing work)
* poor writing ... I'm used to dry manuals, but this one is not only dry, but seems to be written by someone whose first language is not English. As noted by others this is not the author's fault, but his editors and the publisher.
Get one of the "instead of" or "in addition to" recommended books and bypass this one.
Understandable.......2001-11-11
I work in a financial firm and always wanted to find out what modeling is all about. I could not understand books about object oriented analysis or uml, they do not ring a bell at all. I do not care about toy examples like students and professors and about stick figures. But I easily understood this book and used it with other business staff and my development team to achieve a shared understanding of the business. The business staff became and remained critical partners with IT staff throughout development.
Through the looking glass darkly (understanding this book).......2001-06-19
A colleague gave this book and challenged me to understand it, and if I truly understood it he further challenged me to write a review. Since I'm posting a review I obviously understood it.
My first pass through the book was frustrating. I could not get a sense of what the author was trying to say, even though it sounded important. Each time I was tempted to admit defeat and toss the book back in my colleague's face some unseen force make me keep reading. By the time I reached the end I knew less about business specifications than I knew when I first started reading.
I'm not a quitter by nature, so I went back through the book looking for clues that would point me to the elusive methods of business specifications. About mid way through I had a Zen-like flash of understanding and enlightenment. I'd figured it out! The author has skillfully blended the timeless work of the Grimm Brothers, Hansel and Gretle, with the surrealistic writings of Lewis Caroll. Here are the clues: like the Grimm Brothers' masterpiece the author drops little facts and ideas like bread crumbs throughout the labyrinth writing to subtly lead you to that supreme moment of Epiphany - understanding how business specifications can be married to object-oriented techniques. In case the reader is too dense to get it, he also draws maps in the form of diagrams. He fails, however, to explain the symbology in clear terms, and is equally obtuse when it comes to explaining the rules of his notational masterpiece. This is where Lewis Caroll comes in, and how I discovered the key to understanding this book in the first place. He litters the book with passages from Lewis Caroll's books. Not a subtle message, but one that certainly tells you how to read the book. Think surreal and pretend you are chasing a white rabbit and the quest for gleaning useful information from this book will suddenly have a purpose.
As I said, I had a brief moment when the entire book made perfect sense, then, poof, it evaporated and I returned to the real world where I was utterly confused by the author's writing style and intent. The way I see it you have some options. (1) Avoid the book. Frankly you will not miss anything. (2) Buy the book and when or if your moment of clarity comes and you achieve enlightenment write it down before you forget it - and please share it with the rest of us. (3) Buy the book, attempt to understand it and, failing that, go ask Alice.

PASS THE DRE USING THIS DISK.......2006-08-29
I did not have the time or inclination to pay for one of those cram courses. I used this disk at home on my computer and I credit that use to my passing the exam easily. I took the required Real Estate Principles course and then I used the disk -- all ten tests and started on it again -- got through another four tests before the exam. This will prepare you.
I beg to differ ..........2004-07-17
I purchased this CD along with other exam preparation materials. I found it a very helpful addition to my study plan. The exam questions were very similar to the actual exam (which I took and passed). The truth is, there is a limited universe of questions the California Department of Real Estate uses on the broker exams. These questions were a bit more challenging than the actual exams, and a bit more in-depth than the other review material I purchased. You won't pass the test JUST using this, but it's worth the investment!
Go online before wasting money.......2003-05-16
This CD is [bad]. It contains 5 exams, totaling about 1000 questions. At first glance, that looks pretty good. However, the testing interface is very cludgy and hard to use, and the tests are not randomized. In other words, every time you take an exam, you get the same questions in exactly the same order! What's the point in making a CD-based training if you're not at least going to randomly generate the exam from the 1000 or so questions you have on the CD?
Instead, the author basically took 5 paper exams, stuck them on a CD, and charged [money] for it! Save your money. There are much better broker prep materials available online, in most cases for free. If you're really convinced that you want this author's "CD", email me and I will sell you mine for 1/2 price.

Cute title, great concept, weak in content........1999-08-24
This book does contain some good ideas, but many are the same idea repeated in a different way. You can pick through it and gain some good perspectives. A similar book but one with more creative ideas that I'd recommend is Perfect Parenting: The Dictionary of 1000 Parenting Tips.
Repetitive.......1999-06-06
I was looking to this book to give me some new ideas. I figured "365, there's got to be something in there I haven't tried". Not so. The author takes about 10 basic tried and true suggestions and repeats those as the solutions to different behaviors - thus arriving at 365.
Perhaps useful to a new mom, but after having three, I'd already tried them all.

Real Slow Starter .......2007-02-24
When I read a book of this sort, I expect it to open up a new world, a lifestyle I am not familiar with, much as the book "Orchid Fever" tells of Orchid hobbyists that become fanatical about their subjects. This book really does not start until it is half over. It did not appeal to me that the author writes about his family-life , his parents and their troubled marriage, how the father "settled" for being a physician instead of following his hobby (birdwatching). When his father could retire he did, and probably because he was backed by a physician's income throughout the years, when it became time to pursue his hobby, he made up for lost time. This is where the book should have started. The story of the world's top listers and the methods and extremes they adhere to for a chance sighting of another species of bird, new to them and to add it to their lifetime list . I considered the first half of the book as fluff. The second half of the book is a reward for getting through the first half.
not just about birding.......2006-12-09
To See Every Bird on Earth is about the father of the author who had a lifelong obsession with birding. However it is about much more than that as the author fills out the life of everyone from himself to his grandparents. He describes his grandparents trip from Nazi Germany to the United States and their effort to help found Israel. Then he moves on to his fathers life. He notes his father's early love of birding and tries to figure out why it became an obsession. This has to do with his father's parents pushing him in a direction he didn't want to go and the fallout of a failed marriage among other things. The author notes with sadness his fathers distance as a result of his obsession with birding and concludes that birding was an escape for him. However the book ends on a high note as father and son finally begin to reach out to eath other. Although I am not a birder I really enjoyed this book. I especially enjoyed his accounts of the times he grew up in, the 60's and 70's.
Life's dreams and obligations.......2006-11-14
This book is about birds and birding but more importantly it is about life's dreams and obligations. As a birder and a doctor I could easily relate to the father in the book and as a son of a divorced father and mother, I could have empathy with the author. I was intrigued with the possiblility of reading this book about world birding, the travels and the stories but the book was better than just that. I have often wondered about the effect of my birding on my son's lives and my wife. Fortunately I somehow have managed to maintain a good marriage and according to my sons have not done them harm from birding unlike what seemed to happen to the father and son in this book. This book details the dramatic effects of one's struggles with their lifetime dreams (birding, career, and travel in this case)and the obligations of marriage, fatherhood,and being a dependable provider. For those passionate about their dreams and sensitive to their obligations, life can be a difficult road and the best choices may have unsought complications.
Compared with the author and his father I have felt fortunate in this life and this book served as an unexpected gauge of that sometimes not too apparent good fortune. I hope many people read this book.
An extraordinary achievement.......2005-10-18
I was captivated by this book, which came as a surprise since I didn't think I'd be interested in the subject. I found, however, a truly wonderful account of a father-son relationship from its earliest years to the present that is extremely rich in understanding and empathy, as well as a brilliant depiction of the world of bird-watching and its most passionate practioners, the "big listers" who are determined to see every bird species on earth. Anyone who has seen their lives transformed by a hobby for collecting that morphs into a life-dominating obsession will treasure this book.
A Hoatzin Bird: Rare but Not Pretty.......2005-09-10
If someone wants to understand birding in America, this is the book to read. The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession by Mark Obmascik would be my second choice. Koeppel's book is better, however, because it focuses on one person as opposed to a group of competitive birders. As a result, the author does a much better job of probing the inner-workings of the obsessed birder than Obmascik, who never quite gets beneath the feathers of most of the birders he examines. Koeppel, by contrast, tells us everything about the big lister profiled in the book--his eye ring, distinctive wing bars, rufous belly, etc. At times, the book is almost too personal and too intimate, making it painful to read in points. I sometimes wished that the author examined his father with a pair of Swarovski EL 10x42s as opposed to a high-powered microscope, but a son in the end can only see his father through the lens of his own personal experience. What results is not always pretty but nevertheless an excellent portrait of a great American birder.
