A Must Have!!!.......2004-02-27

If you're interested in learning the art of cartooning and maybe even making some money along the way, this book should be one of the first you pick up! It covers how to draw funny cartoon characters, how to develop your own style and characters, how to get funny ideas, how to sketch and ink your cartoons, where and how to sketch and ink your cartoons, where and how to sell your cartoons, and some extra stuff--everything you could need to know! In addition, this book is filled with gag cartoons and strips from some of the most prolific cartoonists in the business. Take my advice: If you're going to by books on cartooning, the Randy Glasbergen books are some of the best! Highly recommend.

A Cartoonist's Cartoonist.......2003-01-19

This is an easy to read, compact (117 page) mini-course for anyone considering a career in cartooning. Illustrated throughout by Randy Glasbergen's unique cartoon style, this book first shows how to draw funny cartoon characters, then launches into the kinds of skills needed to compete in today's competitive environment: how to develop your own characters and style; how to create clever cartoon ideas; how to sketch and ink your drawings; and how and where to sell your finished cartoons.

Interspersed are 8 "Cartoonist Profiles". In each Randy introduces the reader to a successful working professional. Tom Cheney is but one example. Thousands of his cartoons have appeared in the New Yorker, National Lampoon, Cosmopolitan, Woman's World, the Wall Street Journal, and 400 other publications worldwide. Another example is "Revilo," whose real name is Oliver Christianson. Oliver spent many years creating cards for the Hallmark greeting card company. Each of these "profiled cartoonists" supplies the reader with his or her own sound advice.

Every so often Randy gives a "homework" assignment, a challenging lesson to help the reader to practice what he has been learning. Afterall, if you are going to "draw and sell" cartoons, you will need to actually apply your ideas, your pencil, and your pen to paper.

Who better to write a book on "Getting Started Drawing and Selling Cartoons" than someone like Randy, who is one of the most widely and frequently published cartoonists in America today, and has drawn "The Better Half" comic panel since 1982?

The back cover concludes with these words: "With this book, you'll learn the ins and outs you need to succeed in this fun-filled -- and lucrative -- market." Very well expressed!

But even if you never sell a cartoon anywhere in your life, this
book will give you a wonderful behind-the-scenes look at this excellent profession.

I have had some experience in this field. I have sold hundreds of cartoon ideas and cartoons over the years, and I recommend Randy Glasbergen's "Drawing and Selling Cartoons" very highly.

I'd been looking for this kind of think forever and I finally found it for 5 bucks at the mall complex near the city where I vacation often. It has to be the best book I've ever owned.

Great Book!!.......2004-07-16

I love this book. Great concept - it's not about some foreign Magnum photographers coming in to Sarajevo for a few days and publishing a book but the exact opposite! It's Sarajevo photographers portraing their country going through horrible change.
This is really a great and unique book. Double thumbs up for the author and photographers. I think they did a wonderful job!

Powerful and original idea.......2001-11-28

I recently came across this book and a testament to its power is that I am not personally or particularly involved or interested in the Sarajevo conflict but found myself deeply impacted by these photos and accompanying text. I found this to be a wonderfully original idea--to have a compilation of photos from native photographers as opposed to the standard international reporters. It gave a unique perspective.

The Real Story.......2001-02-13

The killing fields of Bosnia, like so many wars, attracted the world's most renowned journalists. But of all of the war correspondents who covered the war in Bosnia, none have depicted the tragedy, suffering and heroism of war as honestly as Leslie Fratkin - and that's because Fratkin had the foresight to realize that no outsider could tell the story of Sarajevo as well as Sarajevans. Fratkin, an accomplished photographer in her own right, arrived in Bosnia to cover the war and simply set down her camera. She spent the next five years tracking down Bosnian photographers, who now live all over the world, looking at their pictures and listening to their stories. Sarajevo Self-Portrait is the culmination of her efforts. It tells the story of nine Bosnian photographers as they chronicled the destruction of their own country. Through a series of extensive interviews, which accompany their bodies of work, we hear how they struggled to hold their lenses still as their friends and families were struck down by snipers' bullets, how they schemed to smuggle film into the city through and underground tunnel, and how at times they used their won urine instead of developing chemicals to make their prints. At times tear-jerking, and at other times gut-wrenchingly comical, Sarajevo Self-Portrait is one of the best, and certainly the most sensitive book to come out of the war. Anyone who wants to understand the human side of that war should buy this book.

A different look at war.......2001-01-18

At a quick lookthrough Sarajevo Selfportrait looks like any other warstory because you tend to fixate on the photos of graves and blood - but after reading the photographers introductions and seeing all the other photos of everyday life in a city under siege this book stays with you for a long time. Without being sentimental or sensationalizing it takes you on a heartwrenching journey down bombed out streets and sniper warnings. After listening to international news and seeing pressphotos from Bosnia for a long time this books gives you a chance to get a realistic and sometimes even humorous look at how to not only survive but live with terror everyday.

More war stories from Sarajevo........2004-04-16

I read Dizdarevic's first book, and I think this is as good as the first. Both books are rather brief, so they could have been combined with a book of only 300 pages. However after the success of the first, the publisher probably wanted to make a little more money on a second book of war stories. That said, the stories are powerful about the cruelity of war and its consequences. Some of the stories at the end are the most powerful, especially about the wayward boy looking for his father in the trenches. Some of the others, the reader is left scratching his/her head on what the author was trying to convey. This is simply a collection of stories from the residents of Sarajevo to the outside world.

For a quick read on the siege of Sarajevo, both Dizdarevic's Sarajevo: A War Journal and this book are good human interest reads. The reader can go through them in a three hour sitting.

An enlightening read.......2000-09-14

This is one of the best books i've read in ages. The peoples' stories that fill these pages show just how amazing the people of Sarajevo are to be able to stay in their wartorn city. The thing that comes across strongest in this book is the undeniable spirit of Sarajevo and the refusal of these people to give in and let war ruin their lives.

The book is basically a collection of simple stories from different people who chose to stay in sarajevo during the war. All the stories are very emotional, however i came away with a good feeling rather than feeling sad. The people featured (which seems to be anyone, young children, cafe owners, musicians etc) in the book describe their experiences more as a triumph of spirit, rather than portraying themselves as helpless victims.

"Well, BLOW ME DOWN!" Proof that Popeye is God........1997-09-17

Sick of the whining in "Cathy"? Has "Peanuts" lost its edge? Did "Gil Thorp" spend too much time in court as opposed to being ON the court? Is "Dilbert" nothing but an effeminate little panty-waist to you? Well, mateys, Mike Higgs' collection of essays and artwork glorifying everyone's fave sailor, POPEYE (you were expectin' Ted Turner?) will restore your faith in the comic pages, if not in humanity itself. These essays and illustrations effectively cover Popeye's birth in "Thimble Theatre", his rise to becoming America's most popular cartoon character, through his creator E.G. Just War Analysis.......2006-11-19

Regan has divided this work into two sections. The first examines the idea of Just War itself; its history and development. We learn how attitudes toward morality in war changed from Ancient times to the present. The second half of the book covers actual wars, from WWI to the conflict in Bosnia. Each chapter here is followed by a set of questions about the conflict, leading the reader to think out his reasoning on the morality of the war.

I had first expected this to be full of anti-war rhetoric, likely written by a leftist professor now protesting the Iraq conflict. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Regan comes off as quite conservative, and not one out to condem America or the Western World. War, he makes clear, is justified if certain basic conditions are met.

The one big drawback here is that Regan fails to weave Just War theory and development into part two. Instead we are given a brief historical look at the wars in question. The reader would be better served if the author had shown how the Just War theory related to the action. What, for instance, did church leaders and others say at the time? What do they say about these matters now? A little reflection of this kind would have made the book a lot better.

Just War Doctrine for the new millennium.......2000-05-14

Just War Doctrine represents Western civilization's cumulative wisdom about what is and is not permissible in war. The Just War tradition can be traced back to Aristotle and Cicero, although early Christian thinkers were major contributors to the development of the Doctrine. Regan makes the point that Just War Doctrine is an exercise in practical reasoning. War is something people do; clearly not everything is permissible in war (e.g., atrocities); the statesman or the general must have some guidelines regarding what is and is not moral in war.

This rather slender book is a good introduction to the history and development of Just War Doctrine. It is a worthy successor to classic but now out-of-print books by OBrien, Walzer, and Johnson.

Regan begins by disposing of some critiques that would rule war out altogether: pacifism and Marxism. He then gives a brief history of the development of the Doctrine, from the writings of Augustine, Aquinas, Vittoria and Suarez.

He then devotes four chapters to explaining the Just War Doctrine on when it is legitimate to go to war, including declaration by legitimate authority, just causes for war, the legitimacy of intervention by third parties, and having the right intention when going to war.

The next chapter is devoted to what is just in war: the principles of proportionality and discrimination. Even a war justly entered may be fought unjustly, although as he points out, unjust conduct in war need not invalidate the original just cause for going to war.

The final chapter discusses the problems nuclear weapons pose for Just War Doctrine. Regan gives a history of nuclear "strategies:" countercity, counterforce, and countercontrol. He analyzes each from the Just War standpoing, giving reasoned evaluations of each.

Nearly the last half of the book is devoted to specific cases, ranging in time from World War I to the Bosnian war. These cases make the book extremely valuable as a text for a course on Just War. Regan not only provides a thumbnail history of each case, but includes a series of questions for discussion about each of the cases.

All in all this book is a good introduction to Just War Doctrine. It would be suitable as a text for a one-semester course. It also provides a good bibliography of current material for further research.

Hawks in Flight Review.......2007-01-11

Excellent book. Great black and white drawings of adults and immatures of many species as well as different "phases" of the same species. No colour drawings are provided as hawks in flight are often seen in conditions that render them in shades of gray. Excellent text with even some humour thrown in. Highly recommended for those looking for a specific hawk book beyond the standard "all birds" guide.

First class.......2006-07-18

Of the dozen or so raptor identification books I own, I have learned the most from this book. The standard Peterson's guides work pretty well if you can get within 50 feet of a sitting bird, or if you use a gun as an accessory. However for most of us, you need to be able to work from a lot further away than that. Dunne takes you beyond plumage clues to descriptions of flight cadence, behaviour, posture, and relative body proportions. He discards the trivial details not visible from less than a hundred feet. He emphasizes what is still obvious in a backlit, soaring bird even miles away. On top of that he offers visual analogies that are cool 'sound bites' to help you remember features of the species. For example think of the flying 'stovepipe', the Northern Goshawk, or the 'arthritic' wingbeats of the Cooper's hawk. These clues offer the kind of practical wisdom that a seasoned birder will use.

The only minor point I would make is that I found a few of the sentences a little hard to understand. However, like most good teachers, he explains important details more than once in slightly different form, so that understanding of key points is clear. This book is definitely a winner.

Great companion book to other raptor field guides.......2005-08-19

"Hawks in Flight" is a different kind of ID field guide. Most guides feature many colored plates and or photographs of the birds. That is very useful if you are within a reasonable distance from the bird and the light is decent.

However, with birds of prey, you frequently see them from a considerable distance and from below. Most of the time you only get a good idea of their shape and flight characteristics. That is where this book comes in handy. Featuring nothing but B&W drawings (David Sibley) and B&W photos, "Hawks in Flight" shows you the bird as you will likely see it - a shape consisting of just a few colors (white, grey, black, brown) featuring some defining marks.

The authors also do a great job of describing what are the defining marks of each species and also telling you how to make a determination between similar birds (featuring B&W photos next to each other).

Good, not perfect, but good.......2004-12-28

Buteo identification has always been a challenge for me, but over the Christmas Day Birdcount I was able to get an identification I would have never gotten without the volume. The subtle parsing of the various colors, sizes, behaviors, etc. of raptors makes this more useful then a field guide for understanding on what you should be focusing when catching that 5 or 6 seconds of "flying away raptor".

Another reviewer mentioned the grainy photographs, which is dead-on. Unfortunately, I have to say that those photographs are (approximately) how I am seeing most of these birds. So, they are an odd bit of help, really.

Hawks in Flight, great source.......2004-03-26

This book is a must have for any raptor fanatic. I used to be so confused on how to tell all those buteos apart, except when it was an obvious red tail. It is definatly worth the money, it is not meant to be a "ooh look at the pretty pictures kind of bird book", it is a holistic approach to identification, you learn about flight traits of each raptor, overall impression, plumage, etc. Read the whole thing so you really get whats going on. I am much more confident and knowledgeable after having studied this book. Buy it, worth it.
