Great Insights into Wright's Design Strategies Throughout His Career.......2007-07-22
Superb book with great insights into recurring design strategies that extended throughout his career. As a Frank Lloyd Wright homeowner and architect with extensive Wright research and visits to his other residential projects, I can attest to the power of the design strategies articulated in this book. The book is well written with beautiful illustrations. The only shortcoming of the book is the contemporary examples in the back of the book which pale in comparison to the great architectural works by Mr. Wright. All things considered this book is highly recommended for Wright enthusiasts and architects.
Great Book.......2007-06-22
This is a great book, giving insight into Wright'd designs. Good pictures of details of some of his houses that are not found in other sources and really nice 3D exploded views of some of the more important ones.
Rosetta Stone of Wright's Magic.......2007-04-27
In this superb book, Hildebrand attempts no less than a definitive explanation of the method used by Wright to weave his architectural magic. Using the theories of "prospect and refuge" & "order and complexity" he
sets out to establish what he calls the "pattern" that reveals itself in Wright's residential designs. Backed by detailed exposition, plans, diagrams and photos of specific examples he convincingly does just that: present the "pattern" that, to a greater or lesser degree, permeates Wright's work. Also covered are various detail items which are often, though with a lesser frequency, present.
To the serious student of Wright's organic architecture, this book is an indispensible resource.
The Title is Accurate.......2007-01-07
Nice book. The author has broken thru all the FLW complexity and clearly and methodically documented the Pattern and Meaning of FLW houses. The isomentric drawings are fantastic! I have been to several of his houses and I love them but could not pull together what the main concepts were. This book is also great for non-architects. I can now continue my passion of FLW research and see the "patterns". My goal is to transend the FLW concepts of "prospect/refuge" in architecture. My only complaint is that some of the black and white prictures are difficult to read. Color pictures would have been nice. Aside from this deficiency the book in my opinion is the best FLW available. I reccomend one read and study this book before visiting his works or reading anything else on FLW.
Wright's Space Rightly Revealed.......1999-05-21
Hildebrand really puts you into a selection of Wright's built spaces; you can imagine what it is like to move through and experience the changing spaces (height, length, turns) in several of Wright's famous houses, even if you've not visited in person. Hildebrand's extended discussion --and demonstration through stunning "3D" exploded diagrams-- of the primordial concepts of Refuge/shelter (those dark fireplace cores and inglenooks) and Prospect/outlook (distant elevated windows) applied to buildings dating to different stages of Wright's practice is most original and convincing. Author's scholarly prose is serviceable rather than equally soaring. Highly useful small plans (newly corrected and with compass indications!) and evocative B/W photographs supplement those amazing diagrams by Wm. Hook.

Thick, Gluey Muck!.......2003-08-09
Don't let the beautiful cover fool you, this book contains dreadfully complex, dry text that confuses rather than enlightens. Unless you are enticed by topics such as, "Interpreting the D/Log E Curve" or "Converting Log Density Ranges" there are easily better choices. If you're looking for clarity - whether novice or advanced photography skill - buy Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure." Its simplicity is effective and refreshing.
Poorly Written Amateur [Junk].......2003-03-02
You can judge a photographer's skill by his/her photographs. All of the photographs in this book look like they were taken by Average Joe with a disposable camera. This book was written backwards. The book does not mention metering technique until chapter 8 (near the end of the book)! They mention handheld meters in chapter 7 but never explain proper use of them. The book never discusses studio lighting techniques or even portable (on camera) flash technique. They never discuss proper use of available light or use of lighting modifiers (reflectors, diffusers, etc . . .). Most of this book rants on and on about arbitrary +/- .25 to .5 exposure adjustments for a million different specific situations (mostly travel photographs) instead of explaining overall technique. Save your time and money. Read another book written by a professional.
Great book for expanding your basic knowledge of exposure........2001-03-22
I was really impressed with this book and how it took an average photographer through the steps towards understanding exposure. There are many fundamental concepts explained in a "layman's fashion" and I would highly recommend this book. There is only one chapter that enters into deep theory which the author suggests you may want to skip or come back to later. If you want to increase your basic understanding of film exposure, natural light and how film development plays an important part, then this book is for you!
Too much information that is not usable.......2001-03-03
There is too much information in this book that is way too technical or simply of no use to me. Here is a quote from the book: "With a spot meter, you can measure the log brightness range of the subject; you know that you need a log density range of around 1.1 to make a contact print on grade 2 paper: and armed with the film manufacturer's gamma/time cures, plus a good guess at the flare factor for your lens, you can select the appropriate development time."
The photographs in the book are average to the point that when looking at them I'm thinking, "I can do better than that."
The authors have a converstaional style in writing, and if you want ALOT of detail on exposure, maybe this is the book for you. There is 20 pages devoted to the chapter on film testing alone, a couple of paragraphs of which are devoted to describing the example negatives that are over/under exposed. The problem is, the negatives they are describing are in one of their other books! You would think that at 192 pages, they could at least include the examples they are refering to.
The key concept in the book is ". . .think hard about how you want a given tone to 'read' in the final picture, and adjust your metering technique accordingly."

NO MIDDLE GROUND.......2003-04-08
To the best of my knowledge, Paul Conrad is the only political cartoonist to win three Pulitzer Prizes. I would really be surprised if any other political cartoonist had first made Richard Nixon's "Enemies List," then, only four years later been named to the Richard M. Nixon Chair at Whittier College, Nixon's alma mater. Conrad, himself, found this rather ironic.
Conrad was chief editorial cartoonist for "The Los Angeles Times" from the early 60's to the early 90's. In that period he created some of the most memorable political cartoons ever published.
Unabashedly liberal, he still found something about every President; Republican or Democrat, Liberal, Moderate or Conservative, that he deemed worth targeting. This book contains about 200 examples of his work, and he never misses his mark.
There is an old expression that "one picture is worth a thousand words." This observation holds true here. I'm going to try to describe a few of these 200 cartoons, but you'd have to see them for yourself to really appreciate them.
An example of his non-partisan president skewering is the cover cartoon which, drawn during Clinton's term, has caricatures of Presidents Nixon, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton with quotes from each as follows:
Nixon: "I am not a crook." --- Reagan: "I don't recall any Iran-Contra connection." --- Bush (Sr.): "I was not in the loop." --- and Clinton: "I did not have sex with that woman."
A few on non-presidential subjects:
On a drawing of two ragged children picking through a garbage pile behind a tenement building, "Speaking of child pornography . . . ."
A picture of an unbalanced scale shows a bullet on one side of the scale outweighing a huge pile of paper on the other side of the scale, labeled "one and a half million primary votes for Kennedy."
On a drawing of J. Edgar Hoover at the gates to heaven being sent away by St. Peter: Hoover, with a file labeled "God" under his arm is saying, "You'd better look at what I've got on him."
Conrad took on everyone and just about every issue, and, depending on who or what you loved or hated, you either loved or hated Conrad. There was no middle ground.

Book is weak; text should have the critical and in-depth writing of an attorney, but this weak book sounds like a touchy-feel session given by a pep-talk real estate agent trying to sell some canon-fodder real estate professional wanna-be a class, any class.
book has no place on this site! It should be hustled in the bookstore of a real estate board where they dont know any bettersave your money: this author has very little clues as to Mchigan real estate law, though with better research this Palmer book could be of assist to someone wanting some knowledge of Michigan legal points in real estate, but, again, this book misses the mark,

This volume focuses on the relationship between change in the family and change in the roles of women and men on contemporary industrial societies. Of central concern is whether change in gender roles has fuelled - or is merely historically coincident with - such changes in the family as rising divorce rates, increases in out-of-wedlock childbearing, declining marriage rates, and a growing disconnection between the lives of men and children. Covering more that twenty countries, including the USA, the countries of western Europe, and Japan, each essay in the volume is organized around an important theoretical or policy question; all offer new data analyses, and several offer prescriptions of how to fashion more equitable and humane family and gender systems. The second demographic transition and microeconomic theory of marital exchange are the dominant theoretical models considered; several chapters feature state-of-the-art quantitative analyses of large scale surveys.

The life of the Lady Lex........2005-09-08
This story was written back in 1942, so it is rather dated as far as WWII history is concerned. The U.S.S. Lexington was a battle cruiser converted to an aircraft carrier while still in the shipbuilding process. This famous aircraft carrier was one of the handful the U.S. kept in the Pacific to hold back the Japanese onslaught at the beginning of World War II.
Johnson details the life of the ship prior to her sinking. He interviews the crew and gets the feel for life aboard an aircraft carrier. Since he is writing in 1942, he details the force formation the Lex was sailing with, by saying Cruiser I, or Carrier II. Carrier II is obviously the Yorktown. References to the enemy are in a derogatory and rascist manner, so this sets the book back.
This book gives a good feel to what is was like in 1942. The U.S. was battling for its life, and the enemy were evil. News was censored, so journalists couldn't not report everything. A nice read for a WWII era book.

This is a short pictoral history of the lady-lex. There are some great photos that I've never seen before, and the illustrations are first rate. A great buy.

The Lost Young Soles in Battle.......2000-05-25
This book was a very good book about the Battle of a Ship that was Full of Young Soles that never once left their posts during a long battle that they new was going to cost most of them their lives. I studied the U.S.S.Coral Sea during the time that I was on the sister ship named after the one in the Battle and the book was as close to the battle as you could get but it should have gave more credit in the back of the book to the young men who fought the battle and lost their lives. I find it in most of the books about famous battles that they do not give the men the credits due them.It is more menningful to reconize the men than the ship. I feel this was as I Loved being part of the New Corral Sea CV-63 in our Navy today but would love to be able to give the men in battle that glummy morning more reconiztion along with all who has fought the battles since. We all fought for are country and it is due time that the people here at home gave all the brave men more for all that they gave for their Home Land. Thank You Mr.Robert A. Taylor AMH-2 USN 1973-1981

Very helpful when choosing which plants to save on a new house lot. This is a good foundation of knowledge for native trees in our area.
a simple pocket guide.......2004-05-31
Great, basic guide book for gaining a more acute sense of native trees in Wisconsin including many common, non-native species as well. 101 different trees are highlighted, 16 conifers and 85 deciduous. The book has a nice layout, ideal for quick reference use, with a good full page color photo for each tree. The trees are grouped according to their leaf type. Handy icons for these groups appear in the upper right-hand page corner and down by the page number. There is also, an icon made for visually understanding the mature tree size, comparing it to a 2-story house.
Short profile text describes the characteristics of a tree's overall shape, height and appearance, needle/leaf, bark, flower, fruit, fall foliage, origin, average lifespan, habitat and region. Common names appear first at the top of the page with botanical names and family classification right underneath in smaller print. At the bottom of the page is a paragraph of Stan's Notes which feature the "gee-wiz" facts of interest, even if the plant is known to be edible or poisonous. This basic information layout is kept consistent throughout the book for each tree. What is not consistent are comments of when in bloom or with berry. A few, though not all trees listed have small insert photos to show fruit and flowers. All trees do have a small insert photo for identifying the bark.
The book has a good introduction and a nice glossary that even gives a tree example for some terminology. Plus there is a checklist at the back. A nice sized, simple, easy reading handbook, kept comprehensible for the average, everyday nature nut. Recommendable as a first-time field guide.

Superb writing, but missing modern essentials.......2006-09-14
I bought this book in hopes that it would show a pathway to sustainable forestry in the ultimate sense. Unfortunately any forestry is basic and consists more of ecological descriptions of the various forest types.
However, as I was reading the book, I was drawn into the story line. The detailed history of the Menominee, including specific individuals was captivating. And ultimately through many trials and tribulations shows how the spirt of these "forest people" won out over the Manifest Destiny forces that pillaged the forest of other Native tribes.
It is a great resource to show, not a pathway to sustainable forest, but rather a pathway of greater resistence to outside forces. Perhaps it holds a lesson for other third world countries combating western ways in the modern world.
