Excellent Historic Design Reference Book.......2000-05-31
I am an artist blacksmith doing architectural work. I use this book frequently to help with authentic design. It is filled with many good photographs and drawings. The text is helpful for anyone desiring to know more about how and why the fine ironwork of the past came to be.
This book was intended for an art student.......1999-06-29
I was some what dissapointed with this book because I found the author too worried about filling text rather than getting to the point. I am a welder and really was looking for a book that discussed reasons, good examples, and how to create wrought iron design. I was not looking for a history lesson. If you are looking for history on the art of Spanish, Italian design etc. and where they were used, this would be the book for you.

Good Resource but a bit Trendy.......2006-08-04
This reference book is a good example of very good logos for your average graphic designer. After not looking at it after a few years, it looks rather dated with "computery" techniques with a few strong exceptional logos. If you are interested in good logo reference books, consider the "International Logos and Trademarks" books by the Supon Design Group.
Simple - just tons of logos.......2000-11-30
If you're looking for interesting or educational content, or commentary, or "how-to" then this isn't your book. Beyond an introduction and appropriate credit for each image, you won't find anything but images.
Now, for what this book IS. It's chock-full of wonderful logo samples in full color. The logos span over a vast array of designs and styles. This is a great resource for study or to get ideas. I would highly recommend it as a great resource for graphic and logo designers.

truly a complete guide.......2000-06-14
basically the title of the book says it all. anything you might want to know about developing and processing black and white photographs they tell you including illustrations and explicit diagragms. a great book for beginners but there is probably not too much here for the more advanced developer.

Darkroom 101.......2007-06-20
This aging volume is still the best overview of basic darkroom equipment and methods for the begginner that I've come across. Excellent illustrations and clear writing make this well organized book a winner. The authors describe enlargers and all of the accessories needed to print from black and white and color negatives. They provide a generously illustrated guide for processing film with just the right amount of detail for a begginer. If you want the basics, this is the place to start.

More curses.......2005-03-05
Deranged monk Cherry says that Ataru Morobishi is cursed, but he's never had to deal with a curse like this before! "For Better Or Curse," the seventh volume of boy-meets-alien sci-comedy series, continues the hijinks of Rumiko Takahashi's oddball cast of aliens, losers, teens and monsters.
In this volume, Ataru and Lum encounter a lovely girl who is always followed by rain. Cherry initially thinks that she is the Rain Demon, but it turns out that because of her father's promise years ago, she's merely cursed. She now needs a loyal pal, and Ataru is all too willing to take the job. Later, the gang encounters a melancholy (and beautiful) ghost, and try to help her find peace... except she may not be as pitifully innocent as she looks! And when a hurricane hits the Morobishi household, Lum's antigravity device causes walls of water -- on the ceiling.
More hijinks ensue when Lum accidently spreads an alien flu through the school, the gang takes the "Pool Freak" to the seaside, Sakura goes to a graveyard to meet her fiancee's (dead) father, and a cursed watermelon menaces a town. Finally, Lum and Ataru have to deal with an idiotic vampire and his smart-alecky bat, who are trying their very best to suck Lum's blood.
Takahashi created the ultimate alien sitcom with the "Urusei Yatsura" series, and the fun only flags in one or two places. (The story about Tama the ghost lags somewhat). By this time, Takahashi had settled well into her style, and what is more, she was doing longer and more involved stories about demons, deranged monks, and oddball aliens.
Things have changed a little by this point in the series -- Lum is less likely to zap Ataru, and while Ataru still chases girls, he has settled into a comfy routine with Lum. And Takahashi's art style had also changed a little: sultry priestess Sakura and her boyfriend Tsubame look eerily like the leads of "Maison Ikkoku." Alien tot Ten still looks like a floating head with a teeny little body, though.
Takahashi piles on the comedy, whether it's precocious Ten making goofy faces, a Walkman-wearing Cherry surfing, or Ataru making out with a bat while Lum laughs hysterically in the trees. And with Lum and Ataru now familiar to readers, the supporting characters provide plenty of laughs, such as the bewigged Cherry, Ataru's long-suffering parents, and the completely stupid Count Dracula.
The seventh volume of "Urusei Yatsura" is an entertaining set of sci-comedy tales. Just don't get on the wrong side of the Rain Demon.
Best Of The Best.......2000-02-08
This book is by far the best book next to creature features. If you like Ataru's anitics in all of the other books, you will love For Better Or Curse. Ataru is cursed yet again by a beautiful girl. But now he is being followed by the Rain Demon!

Also included are step-by-step instructions for six common Internet business projects, including setting up a Web site, setting up a Web store, publishing an e-mail newsletter, using the Internet for publicity and promotion, using the Internet to recruit and as an employment tool, and setting up and managing an investment portfolio.
Customer Reviews:
A Thorough and Useful Tool for Online Efficiency.......2001-01-21
This book includes a wealth of information on how to maximize the time you spend on the internet: a characteristic I find vitally important, because, as we all know, it's easy to spend hours looking for something online yet finding nothing. The book is well organized, and the index makes it easy to search for different topics of interest. The book will be of most use to someone who wants detailed information about different facets of the internet. For example, Nelson and Coleman outline the strengths and weaknesses of different search engines and services. They also include great information about government websites that help in researching information about businesses and demographics. The book even has information about how to design your own e-mail newsletter or put PowerPoint presentations online. Certainly, everyone won't need a 720-page guide to the internet, but I can see how it will be a useful tool for me.
A Timely and Realistic Guide to eCommerce.......2001-01-15
The MBA's Guide to the Internet describes itself in the Introduction as "the only book that specifically describes how you can more easily, more productively, and more powerfully use the Internet in business." While I'm not sure about it being the only book that attempts these goals, I know that it is the only book, of the many that I have read, that does a thorough job of it.
For the casual Internet user, this book is overkill. There are others that are shorter and more directed to the occasional surfing expedition.
However, this one is targeted specifically to a business market with timely and realistic discussions of just about everything you would want to know about the important role that the World Wide Web can play in the success of businesses today. Discussions on Setting Up a Web Store, Setting Up an Intranet, Online Banking, Online Investing and more make it a valuable manual for businesses already involved or just getting started with eCommerce.

Book Description
In 1941, the series of exhilarating victories in the North African Desert came to an abrupt end with the arrival of the German Afrika Korps and their brilliant commander, Rommel. The second volume carries us into the next phase of the war in the desert. The death of General O'Connor and the political intervention that led Wavell to be replaced by Auchinleck as Commander-in-Chief, to the near disaster at the First Battle of Alamein only averted by Auchinleck himself and the final political wrangle that meant despite this he, like Wavell, would be replaced.
Customer Reviews:
A Fine Account of the Desert War.......2003-03-21
The 1940-43 desert campaign is probably the most satisfying of WWII. Civilians were scarce, so one can admire German military prowess without the usual atrocities. The British revealed their best qualities: magnificently stubborn in defense, fearless but slow in offense, hobbled by inferior equipment but more by cautious generals.
This middle volume of Pitt's definitive history begins after Operation Battleaxe, Wavell's disastrous June 1941 offensive that persuaded Churchill to replace him. Solid, if unchiarismatic, the new general, Auchinleck, fended off Churchill's demands for quick action, reorganized the army, and launched operation Crusader in November. Rommel, obsessed with besieging Tobruk and misled by spies (caught and turned by the English as usual), assumed this was a feint until almost too late. During the confused fighting that followed, both sides suffered heavily, and Auchinleck showed more offensive spirit than many of his generals. On the verge of victory after a week, Rommel abruptly turned and retreated 500 miles into Libya. His long, fragile supply line had dried up. Both sides were exhausted when the front finally stabilized, but after only a month the Afrika Korps recovered and took the offensive. The battles and retreats in spring 1942 marked the nadir of Eighth Army morale. Discouraged soldiers and junior officers often admired Rommel more than their own leaders. Taking over direct command of the fighting, Auchinleck performed well in stopping the Germans inside Egypt, but Churchill was determined to make another change. Auchinleck's successor, Montgomery, enjoyed great success, but that happens in the next volume.
Three volumes on the North African campaign might seem too much for anyone outside a staff college, but Pitt (who served in the Middle East) is a fine writer: lucid, witty, and opinionated. Besides providing clear descriptions of complex unit actions, he brings the major figures to life and gives a vivid picture of the problems and miseries of soldiering in the desert.

Disaster in the Desert Averted by Auchinleck.......2002-01-10
"Auchinleck's Command" is the second volume of a three-volume set by Barrie Pitt published by Cassell & Co. in London. Pitt is no stranger to war or the theater about which he writes, having served in both the European and Middle East theaters in World War II.
Pitt gives the reader first hand accounts of fighting in North Africa from a soldiers' view point as well as that of the generals. Highly readable, accurate and with well-researched detail, this definitive work brings the reader to the crucial battle of First Alamein in July 1941. Gen. Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Korps had consistently outfought the British since Rommel's appearance in theater in early 1941. However, thanks to Auchinleck's personal intervention at First Alamein, disaster was averted and Egypt remained in the hands of the British.
Although Auchinleck was forced into retirement after First Alamein, on June 20, 1943, he was back in the good graces of Winston Churchill and placed in command of the Indian Army.
In the end, one has to give credit to Cassell & Co. for introducing all three volumes of their "Crucible of War" series on North African fighting-you won't want to buy one without purchasing the other two.

The Year that Changed (Almost) Everything.......2005-06-15
In our turbulent era, it's tempting to look back to an earlier, more peaceful time -- the Good Old Days -- when the world made sense.
Sorry, folks. That idyllic time never existed -- least of all in 1919. All you have to do is read William Klingaman's history of that year to learn how chaos and violence dominated the planet in the immediate aftermath of World War I. Mass starvation in Central and Eastern Europe. The rise of fascism in Italy and Germany. Bolshevik revolution and civil war in Russia. Massacres by the British imperial forces in India. Race riots and Red scares in the United States.
The cast of characters is nothing short of astounding. And the seeds they planted in 1919 would ultimately turn the world upside down for generations to come:
-- Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky
-- Mussolini and Hitler
-- Woodrow Wilson and the failed League of Nations
-- Ho Chi Minh
-- Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks
-- Albert Einstein
-- Kaiser Wilhelm
-- Hemingway and Fitzgerald
-- Harry Truman and Winston Churchill
-- Pioneering aviators, inventors and scientists
All of these powerful people were either on the world stage or preparing to seize the limelight in 1919. Given everything that happened that year, it's no wonder that the 1920s were known as the "Age of Anxiety."
At more than 600 pages, Klingaman's book is not an easy read. And at times he gets bogged down in the details of Wilsonian diplomacy. More photos of second-tier players would have been helpful. But overall, this is an excellent popular history of the year that really did re-define our world forever.
Captures an Era.......2003-06-12
Klingaman lucidly describes the various political and cultural plots in different parts of the world and how actions in one place have ramifications elsewhere. The personalities of the newsmakers of the era are covered including two who were starting their rise to power during the period, Benito Mussolini and Adlof Hitler. Interpersonal communication between the "big four", (Lloyd George, Vittorio Orlando, Georges Clenmenceau, and Woodrow Wilson) is included. Klingaman includes in his overview, stories of aviators Harry Hawker and MacKenzie Grieve, who tried to make the first nonstop Atlantic crossing. In terms of popular culture he looks at the career of Charlie Chaplin. On the sports front he describes the infamous Chicago Black Sox matter. Generally speaking this book effectively captures a broad sweep of what was happening in 1919.
Book Description
Pete Dunne has taught birding to beginners for years, but he has never found the right book to help them get started. Now the popular birding author identifies the skills and tools available to people with any amount of interest, great or small,in bird watching. Beginning with backyard birding and moving through a quick but comprehensive survey of tools of the trade, Dunne outlines ten basic, simple steps in bird identification that can make a birder out of the most casual of observers. He goes on to show beginning birders how to use their skills to explore new horizons throughbirding by ear, birding by telescope, and finding and identifying rare or difficult birds. Written in the lively, authoritative style that has made Dunne one of the most popular writers in this field today, Pete Dunne on Bird Watching will inspire in readers both a growing passion for birding and a lifelong respect for the natural world and its inhabitants.
Customer Reviews:
Birding for Beginners.......2005-02-13
Veteran birder Pete Dunne has written a book that is an excellent introduction to the popular hobby. As one who's been doing it for a little less than a year, I found his book very helpful.
The various chapters cover useful topics, including: how to select your binoculars (and what those numbers on them mean); what to wear - and not to wear - while looking for birds; how to set up a feeder and make your own back yard more attractive to birds; protecting birds from threats ranging from cats to glass; finding a good field guide; organizations and events; the basics of identifying birds; plus some interesting stories from the field, care of Dunne and other experienced bird watchers. There's a lot of helpful information, that will make a nascent birder feel less clueless.
A few things that might have made it better: there's little info on ornithology itself - Dunne frequently mentions various types of birds as examples, but you may have no idea what he's talking about. When discussing the all-important field marks, for example, there are some (black and white) photos, but more of them (and perhaps illustrations) might have made his points more clear. For instance, showing the difference between the different tail shapes would have been useful. Also, while he mentions many species and family, there's not even a basic rundown of the different types of birds - so if you don't know a sparrow from a warbler, some of his text seems meaningless.
Note also that this is not a field guide (nor does it claim to be) so you'll need something else to help you identify the birds you see.
Combined with a couple of other books like a good field guide (the Peterson guides seem to be the gold standard) and a basic text on ornithology (David Sibley's books get high marks from many) and Dunne's book on birding techniques, and you should be ready to go.
An informative book.......2004-12-14
This publication, authored by birder Pete Dunne, was published in 2003. It contains 334 pages. There are eight chapters; within these chapters are different sections. Appendixes, a glossary, a bibliography, and an index are also included. Throughout the chapters, certain words are boldfaced--they are defined in the glossary. Numerous black-and-white photos are contained; they display things such as birders in the field, kinds of birdfeeders, and types of birds. I find the section on binoculars to be indispensable and illuminating. The table that deals with seed preferences of common backyard birds is helpful. The information provided on types of birdfeeders is useful. I like the section that discusses landscaping for birds: the regional plant lists--for North America--are informative. The section on water being used as a bird attractant is worthy, along with the section that deals with nest boxes. Other interesting topics are field guides, birding apparel, basic bird identification, birding by ear, keeping records, bird censusing, and spotting scopes and tripods. In addition, I appreciate the glossary and the bibliography. This book is not only designed for the beginning birder but also for those that are more experienced. It is set up to follow the progressive gradients that birders pass through as their interest increases and more information is needed. Actually, I rate this book 3.5 stars. Pete Dunne on Bird Watching is instructive and recommendable.
Great for beginners.......2003-09-09
I have both this book and "Sibley's Birding Basics." I think that Dunne's book is better for the beginner. It is written in a MUCH more engaging style, is not nearly as technical (e.g. in details of bird taxonomy), and has a lot more practical advice.
Dunne's Birding World: Don't Buy a Zoom bino!.......2003-08-02
This prolific writer on birding delivers again, taking many of his tried and true observations on birding and compiling them into an easy and interesting format. I would recommend this strongly to any birder but certainly beginning birders will profit the most from its insights. Especially good for anyone considering an optics purchase.
Wonderful for beginners -- buy this before anything else!.......2003-06-24
Pete Dunne does a wonderful job introducing the reader to the world of birding. He starts with the basics: field guides and binoculars, and explains how to choose among the various ones out there (there are so many that a beginner can easily become overwhelmed). As a beginner, I know that he saved me a lot of time and money on these two issues alone. Dunne then moves on to more advanced topics, such as basic birding techniques, where to go birding, and birding organizations. Inspirational anecdotes from his experience and other birders are peppered throughout, easing the reader into a specialized field while maintaining that natural curiousity about birds that all of us have.
