Book Description
A quirky trend of building designs inspired by bizarre animals has emerged in the last few years. Why and how has this happened? Is it because of new technical possibilities in materials and structural engineering? Or is the answer to be found in new social preoccupations in science? After a brief look at the historical precedents, the book focuses on contemporary examples from around the world and shows the various ways in which the organic/animal forms inform the architectural ones. Featured architects include Frank Gehry, Michael Sorkin, and Greg Lynn.

Zoomorphism.......2006-04-19
I purchased this book almost two years ago and I am still going back to it as a source of inspiration. It isnt so much a detailed analysis of each of the projects - it is left after you to research individual projects of interest, but it gives a wonderful insight into the connections of modern architecture to the design of living organisms. The book is hardcover and well made, with very clear images.
Overall, though one of the smaller books in my collection, it is one I am constantly going back to for inspiration or as the start of a new investigation in design.
Highly recommended.

Carolyn Quatermaine A Genius in Decorative Arts! .......2006-12-26
For Years I was clipping from the European magazines the genius of Carolyn Quartermaine, not realizing they were all the same lady. One day, I finally analyzed this collection of photographs. Soon, I had a portfolio of her beautiful fantasies in decoration, food and collages, then I found the book. She changed my way of living toer "anything goes as long as it is beautiful". I am her fan forever !!
perfection!!!.......2005-04-10
I adore Carolyn Quartermaine! Several years ago I was captivated by a House Beautiful cover that featured gorgeous, lusciously colored printed silks. I saved the magazine, and later bought this book, only to open it and find the same photo. I was thrilled to finally find the artist who I'd been carrying in my head all those years. Carolyn is absolutely amazing, an incredible textile artist, as well as a beautifully creative individual. This wonderful book includes not only pictures of her work, but also a section on arranging food, and everyday objects that will make you feel like you've slipped into some heavenly version of Wonderland. An excellent book by an inspiring artist!
Incredibly Original.......2002-05-21
This is my favorite decorating book of all time. It inspired me to experiment and create different looks, and I highly recommend it.
Pretty in Shocking Pink, Tangerine, and Robin's Egg Blue.......2001-11-14
French 18th century chandeliers swathed in organza, colorful Japanese candies in charming boxes, luxuriant fresh garden roses scattered across a ballgown skirt-if these images appeal to you, Carolyn Quartermaine Revealed is a must see. The book is a hybrid of fashion and interior design, and showcases fabric designer and collage artist Quartermaine's London flat.
Her home is also her studio, where she is constantly experimenting. She favors the romance and elegance of antique French pieces tempered by clean, airy surroundings. Passionate about color, Quartermaine appreciates beauty in both grand and mundane objects-from the peeling paint of a fine old gilded chair to a pretty ice cream wrapper. The exquisite photographs show yards of luscious silk in robin's egg blue, vivid pinks, and tangerine against a backdrop of crisp white. Calligraphy-both Asian and Western-is another passion of the artist. Her contemporary twists on the classics are smart, fresh, and entertaining.
Essentially Quartermaine seems to live in a splendid world of her own creation, and the book gives readers glimpse in to it.
Some research on Carolyn Quartermaine.......2000-03-31
I found the book first class, but need more help from Carolyn's followers. I am studying at Staffordshire University for a BA (HONs) in Surface Pattern and my research is covering Carolyn Quartermaine. Information about her is limited. Can anyone help me anywhere please by sending me information at sylviroyal@aol.com Thank you so much.

Delightful Aerials for City Robert Cameron has not done!.......2006-06-28
'Over Boston' by aerial photographer David King Gleason is virtually identical to those volumes done by Robert Cameron for London, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other cities. I always looked for Cameron's volumes whenever I visited a new city on business, and found this substitution which, on first reading impressed me as virtually identical to Cameron's work. After several years and another look, I begin to see how the work could have been better. Among the little things, there is no picture of Fenway Park, the home of the Boston Red Socks. Oddly, there is also no picture of Logan Airport. A larger issue is the book is just a bit too old to show the progress of the famous 'big dig' highway project working its way through the middle of the city.
All this considered, it is still a first rate entry in the 'view from above' genre. As someone who has been to Boston twice, I find the author has covered virtually all the highpoints I know. For someone who has never been to Boston, I believe it is as good or better a source for 'what do I want to see' as the latest Frommer guide. I was particularly happy with the way one could easily identify those things which distinguished Boston architecture from other major cities. It also made me jealous that my own local metropolis, Philadelphia, would not show as good a face as the venerable lady on the Charles.
Over Boston: Aerial Photographs - Needs a revision!.......2004-09-20
Pictures are almost historical they are so old (mid 80's at best)
Clarity.......2004-04-01
I really have enjoyed this book. I find myself going back to it again and again. This is Gleason's best work, the photography is excellent. The only draw back is that the pictures are dated. Boston has changed considerably from the time this book was first published, but if you are a fan of Boston, of which I am one, or just an admirer of stunning photography you will not be disappointed.
A fantastic way to remember Boston........2001-01-24
I can't say enough good things about this book. Of course the aerial photography is breathtaking with perspectives familiar only to pilots, pigeons and, sea gulls. We have given this book to a number of friends and family who have moved from the Boston area as way to warmly remember their days here.

As Jon and Garfield set off in search of excitement, what they find are lots of laughs, plus a few important lessons about love and loyalty.
Of course Garfield knows the secret to a happy life: you just take it one meal at a time!

Ups and Downs.......2001-10-02
It's a good book if you love Garfield, but don't come to expect it to be like the regular comic strips. The comedy is limited, and the book is short and thin, but at least it's color :)
A great choice for Garfield fans!.......2000-07-15
I ordered "Garfield Gets a Life" from amazon.com a while ago and won't ever regret it. I believe it's one of garfield's funnier TV-special-type books. As noted above, the book was published in 1991, when Jim Davis's ideas were still original, and not so repetitive. One thing's for certain: Garfield really does know how to enjoy life! I would truely recommend this particular book to any and all Garfield fans out there, especially because it's almost NEVER found in book stores.

Book Description
Systems Engineering for Business Process Change: New Directions is a collection of papers resulting from an EPSRC managed research programme set up to investigate the relationships between Legacy IT Systems and Business Processes. The papers contained in this volume report the results from the projects funded by the programme, which ran between 1997 and 2001. An earlier volume, published in 2000, reported interim results. Bringing together researchers from diverse backgrounds in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering and Business Schools, this book explores the problems experienced by IT-dependent businesses that have to implement changing business processes in the context of their investment in legacy systems. The book presents some of the solutions investigated through the collaborations set up within the research programme. Whether you are a researcher interested in the ideas that were generated by the research programme, or a user trying to understand the nature of the problems and their solutions, you cannot fail to be inspired by the writings contained in this volume.

Challenge Your Taxes: Homeowner's Guide to Reducing Property Taxes
ASIN: 0793129370 |
Book Description
Readers can join the many home-owning taxpayers who have used the proven step-by-step instruction covered in this book to pocket huge savings after successfully challenging their property tax bills. Here, the consumer-advocate authors reveal this proven formula, outlining in detail the what-to-do and how-to-do-it in an easy-to-follow plan for researching and comparing property values, checking assessment records, filing a claim, and appealing the property tax bill.
Customer Reviews:
Covers the basics. Not enough resources for more info........2000-05-04
This book gives an overview of how property tax is assessed and how to file an appeal. It covers the basics very well. In this regard, this book helps to fill in information that's hard to come by otherwise. However, it drops the reader there. To be complete, the book needs to list state offices that deal with local property tax issues. It needs to give a much better list of internet resources available to property owners. It needs to get down to the nitty-gritty of how property tax assessments are figured. It assumes that the local tax offical is going to spend as much time as necessary to educate you in these areas. More than likely, the offical won't. I hope the authors write a second edition and fill in these gaps.
Easy to understand, simple to use, and based on solid facts........1999-06-24
I like this book as there are no chapters, just a few easy to follow steps. I found the answers to my questions: Can I expect to win my challenge of my Homeowners Property Tax?
I have never understood how Property Taxes on my home were derived, and I thought there was nothing I could do to protect the assessed value assigned to it by the Assessor. After reading this book and reviewing the questions and answers at the end of each step, I now have a clear idea of how to approach the Assessor to get them lowered. Recently, I talked with a friend of mine from Missouri who had read "Save A Fortune on Your Homeowners Property Tax." He told me it only took him two steps to get his home taxes reduced by $60.00 a year. That is not a fortune, but he says he is really pleased with his lower tax bill.
Another fact that makes this book valuable is the annual savings I might get by checking for the proper market values each year and then comparing them to amounts assigned to our Homeowners Insurance. This is a strong exhibit to provide the insurance company to make sure our premiums are based on realistic numbers.
As someone who doesn't have the time to delve deeply into the world of real estate or tax issues, but who does want to understand the subject, and save money, I'd recommend this book highly.

Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield. Review of current knowledge and research in dementia, for families and all caregivers dealing with the dementia patient.
Book Description
When Frank Lloyd Wright died in 1959 at the venerable age of 91 he was the most famous architect in the United States. During his long career-over 70 years-he designed over a thousand buildings, almost all of them for clients in North America. Of these around half-532-were completed and most of these, 409 in total, still exist, 17 of them recognized by the American Institute of Architects to be primary examples of his architectural contribution to American culture. Of the 17, Fallingwater is frequently viewed as the greatest piece of architecture in American history.
His prodigious output is all the more surprising when one considers how few of his projects reached completion in the first quarter of the 20th century. Much of the reason for this paucity of commissions was his lifestyle. Frank Lloyd Wright led a colorful life full of conflict and controversy, particularly in his personal affairs. He left his first wife and children for the wife of one of his clients. After she and her children had been hacked to death by their deranged cook, his next wife was a morphine addict. He would end his days with a Bosnian Serb aristocrat 33 years his younger.
Frank Lloyd Wright thoroughly enjoyed being a celebrity, he loved making special appearances and giving interviews. At the time his self-promotion-and, during World War II his pacificism-made him as many enemies as admirers. But he was untroubled by self doubt, and today his character is irrelevant: his work speaks for itself. In spite of his very human weaknesses, his work helped give American architecture an identity of its own, free from the constraints of the Old World. No longer an imitation of European style, U.S. architecture evolved its unique style in the 20th century, and Wright played a key role in this.
The Atlas of Frank Lloyd Wright examines a hundred of his finest buildings, state-by-state. From his earliest work in Chicago, most of the key buildings are covered including: Fallingwater, the Californian textile-block houses-Storer, Ennis, Barsndall and his Oak Park Home and Studio; both Jacobs houses, the Robie House and the Taliesin complex.

Decent book.......2007-08-25
For its type, its a decent book though I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it....
Worth 3 1/2 stars, nice with a bit more info than most.......2007-03-25
I like FLW color photo books. It's hard not to if you like his style. This 2005 softcover book does a more than adequate job of presenting about 81 of his building with one or more color photos all with a 3/8" white page border. What this book has that none other does in the FLW color photo books I've seen is a set of info for each building in what looks like a black and white printed label with the Name (of the building), Address, Date Built, Any Rebuilding, Open to Public and whether it has its own Website and listing the website for the specific building when it does exist. The format for almost each building shown is two-thirds of each facing page with photos and one-third with descriptive and informational text along with the label. On about six photos the black and white label is placed on the color photo over part of the landscape which is visually somewhat jarring.
The Atlas part is that the buildings are all listed alphabetically by the state they are in, Arizona to Wisconsin with Illinois, Wisconsin and then California having the most. There's the infrequently photographed "World's only Frank Lloyd Wright service station". Almost every photo is an exterior show with a handful of interior ones. There's a 10 page introduction interspersed with nice photos, three of them black and white and about five drawings. It's nice but not spectacular. I'm glad I got it.
Stunning photos and very informative.......2006-05-17
Not only are the photos gorgeous in this book but if you're a Frank Lloyd Wright fan, this book offers the names and history of each building, addresses, circa built, websites, etc. For cross country travelers, it's a must have as his works are in nearly every state.
Beautiful Concept, Clumsy Production.......2006-04-17
There are so many books about FLW that any new one has to be special to rate my buying it. This atlas purports to show a great number of his works together with enough information to let Wright fans find, and, if possible tour the buildings. Good intentions here are somewhat undone by poor photo editing and printing. Some of the images are wonderful, but many needed help (i.e. image processing) before being sent to the printer. In some cases the printing is at fault, because one can feel an excess deposit of ink on some images and not others. I feel sorry for the author! Her publisher really let her down. If this book was re-edited by a Photoshop professional and the printer properly supervised, it would be great book indeed.

Sigmund Freud and the Jewish Mystical Tradition (Dover Books on Biology, Psychology, and Medicine)
ASIN: 0226439607 |
Book Description
Dennis B. Klein explores the Jewish consciousness of Freud and his followers and the impact of their Jewish self-conceptions on the early psychoanalytic movement. Using little-known sources such as the diaries and papers of Freud's protégé Otto Rank and records of the Vienna B'nai B'rith that document Freud's active participation in that Jewish fraternal society, Klein argues that the feeling of Jewish ethical responsibility, aimed at renewing ties with Germans and with all humanity, stimulated the work of Freud, Rank, and other analysts and constituted the driving force of the psychoanalytic movement.

A Useful Book.......2000-11-16
Each species account consists of a black and white illustration, discussion of the species' present and historical distribution in Tennessee, and its breeding biology. There are also distribution maps for each species and abundance maps for most. The author provides numerous references within the body of the species accounts.
The Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Tennessee is one of a number of similar state-wide bird distribution atlases. While the methodology varies between the various atlases, they are still generally quite useful in providing a snapshot of the distribution of birds at the present time. This Tennessee atlas also gathers together valuable information on the historical distribution of the birds and their breeding biology. It will be quite valuable to ornithologists and wildlife biologists in Tennessee and the surrounding area, both for the distribution information and for the extensive references. Amateur naturalists, also, will find it useful as a supplement to field guides and other identification tools, since it covers the distribution of Tennessee birds in great detail and also provides more information on the breeding biology of the birds than are generally found in field guides and other resources. The language is non-technical.

Birds of the Carolinas.......2007-01-15
Overall, an excellent book - my only complaint is that the bird pics are a little on the small side.
birds of the carolinas, 2nd ed........2006-07-01
The pictures were too small and some of the birds did not have a picture to wiew.
Like An Old Friend.......2003-07-31
This is the first bird book I ever owned. I purchased it in the summer of 1999. Four years later, it's like an old friend. It starts out with a short introduction and a few pages on the problem of identification. Then it goes on to describe the various bird habitats in North and South Carolina. The largest section of the book, of course, is the species guide. I found it to be particularly helpful with woodpeckers and shore birds, of which there is a wonderful variety here on Hilton Head Island.
I'm still learning about birds, so I have not yet become proficient at differentiating between various warblers, for example, but this book has helped me identify a couple. Last summer, I searched the book front to back for a bird species I encountered in Pickney Island National Wildlife Preserve, and never found it. Turns out that the bird was a Golden Crowned Kinglet. The bird was listed in this book, but for some reason there was no photo. Strictly speaking _Birds of the Carolinas_ isn't the best field guide on the market, but I still use it and have thoroughly enjoyed owning it. I think you'll enjoy it, too, especially if you are a new hobbyist.
don't bother.......2003-02-12
I ordered this book hoping to have help identifying the birds at the feeders in my back yard. This books wasn't much help. Most of the photos are tiny--all you see is a bird shape sitting in a bunch of bushes or trees. The photo of the cardinal and blue jay are excellent--but who doesn't already know what these birds look like? Also there was too much information on habitat and migration patterns. I suppose that some people would think this was important. All I know is that there are dozens of gray birds feeding my backyard and I still don't know what most of them are called.
I'm going to buy another book, hopefully with larger pictures.
An Essential Reference.......2000-02-28
Birds of the Carolinas is an essential reference for the hobiest. It is particularly useful in identifying transients, and in differentiating between similar species based on habitat and time of year. The book contains excellent photographs of most (but not all) of the species referenced.
Book Description
Like gardening, bird watching is a fast-growing regional hobby. Now, Cool Springs Press brings its proven method of successful state-specific gardening approach to bird watching guides. In collaboration with Bird Watcher's Digest, these bird watching guides provide accessible, credible advice.
The birds that frequent the backyards of Tennessee differ from the birds that frequent the backyards of Florida. In addition to unique descriptions, each bird profile includes a range map to identify each bird's North American distribution. One hundred birds are profiled, each with a color photograph, to ensure accurate identification. A seasonal section informs the reader of:
Migrating birds that can be seen during that season
The foods and plants that can attract those birds
Where to go to view year-round and migrating birds
Cool Springs Press's partner, Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird species, bird habitat, feeding, and other related topics.
This series of books from Cool Springs Press targets the beginning bird watchers for ten states.
Customer Reviews:
The Beauties Abound in this State, as Do the Predators........2005-09-10
Mid- to late-September is the peak of the hawk's Southern migration through Tennessee. Most are in the Eastern part of the state at Soddy Mountain in Chattanooga and Sharps's Ridge, just up Broadway about a mile from where I live in Knoxville.
The Europena Starlings are unloved on the streets and by the downtown residents of this town. In 1889, there were not European starling in North America. In 1890, a hundred were released in New York's Central Park in an attempt to bring to America ll the bird species mentioned in Shakespeare's plays. Today, just over a century later, we have more than 200 million. The adaptable starling spread westward in history's greatest avian population explosion.
The barred owl is the one the artificial GSA owls around town look like. It is a top-of-the-line predator, eating fish, rabbits, pigeons. It is a drug=dge to the bird world. The red-tailed hawk eats a variety of birds, mice, rats, rabbits, squirrels, even reptiles.
The black vulture, worse even than the falcons to eat pigeons, kills small animals like young pigs, calves and lambs. The American Kestral, merlin and peregrine falcons feast on rodents, pigeons, voles, and other small animals.
The loon is a fish-eater. All four types -- common, red-throared, yellow-billed and Pacific -- can be found at Big Sandy. It's haunting, yodeling calls are heard around ponds and bodies of water. They migrate through Tennessee in November and March.
Tennessee Warblers nest across much of Canada and in northern U. S. states. In Tennessee, they migrate west of the Appalachians, Tennessee Warblers spend teh winters from southern Mexico to northwestern South America. I think they are not Tennessee birds at all!
Noted for its newing-catlike call, it can imitate as many others as the mockingbird in its vocal versatility. The catbird eats aphids, termites, dragonflies, caterpillars, grapes, cherries nd berries along with mountain ash shrubbery.

Customer Reviews:
great for newcomers to the state.......2003-07-11
I have found this chart very helpful, because I have only lived in Tennessee ten weeks. My backyard is so thick with trees that often I'll only see a flash of color--I can see a bird's approximate size and its colors, but not its shape or any details. This chart narrows down what kind of bird it might be, and I can then look up the bird in my bird books and look to see if I have the correct bird once I get another glimpse of it. It can't really be used alone, as it doesn't give much detail or even a very good picture, and I've seen one or two birds already that aren't in it because they aren't common in the state, but it is very helpful for what it does do.
Useful but limited foldout guide........2000-04-13
This is a useful guide for identifying common birds in Tennessee. However, it includes only the drawings and sizes. I use mind to hand to friends when I am birding; it keeps them out of my Peterson's and Audubon guides.
