If you like Tudor houses, you'll enjoy this book.......2004-02-10

Fine examples of a type of photorealistic drawing that you don't see anymore, which are reason enough to buy the book. The majority of homes are Tudor or Old English, like the ones on the cover, with just a few Colonials and Bungalows mixed in. The writing is quaint, with bedrooms called chambers, and mentions of breakfast nooks, servant's quarters, and telephone cabinets.

Great idea for a book, but to much blah blah blah..........2004-04-13

I was enthusiastic about reading this book. What a great idea, recognizing the basic shapes of nature; triangles, spirals, horizontal and diagonal lines, and radial lines. The problem is that Gary seems to go on and on about his philosophy of photography. I concise how-to book on creative and abstract nature photography this ain't. I ended up skimming the book and returning it to the bookstore.

A collection of fabulous and inspiring photography! As with great photography anywhere, few words are needed, the photos speak for themselves. The book opened my eyes to seeing many new possibilities.

It's too bad Gary didn't stick to photography and not try to be an author. He goes on the novice writing theory that if three sentences are good then four paragraphs will be better. I think one star is an extremely high rating for this book.

The Patterns of Nature Come Alive.......1999-06-05

I had the privilege of taking Gary's "Patterns in Nature" class through Santa Fe Photographic Workshops in late 1998 - it was there I read Gary's first book (which is now out of print) and studied under him for an intense week. Gary has a clear writing style, and his written descriptions in the book are just like the way he speaks and works with his students. The photographic examples are excellent protrayals of the points and theories that he wants to make. I enjoyed his first book, and I am anxiously waiting for the new edition.

Subleties and helpful advice !.......1998-07-12

Hi. I had this book since 1993 and it's the one that helped me to reach a "Real higher level" in nature photography; Gary not only illustrates near perfection the places he had visited, but he really feels the emotion and flavor of being a nature lover and photographer. He convey and taught me how to real feel, understand, and realize the power of subtle and strong images that drive our and "their" minds to care about nature and the places in danger; We must care about what surround us. I'm trying hard to travel a lot to capture the beautifulness of my country; although I'm a graphic designer and digital artist, my heaviest passion is Photography.

The Best Photography Book.......2003-07-13

This book explains simply and logically how to photograph your garden and surrounding landscapes. Reading the clear and concise descriptions and looking at the accompanying photographs I was finally able to understand elements of photography fundamentals that have alluded me for years. The stunning photographs make this a keeper. I find myself lingering over pages just for the pictures. This is a welcome library addition and the perfect gift for any photographer or gardner.

The books in the Pro-Photo series all share a few common characteristics. Each contains exquisite examples of photography that inspire a person to take out a camera and capture a special moment, person, or event. Unfortunately, many of the books are short on technique. PHOTGRAPHING ANIMALS AND PETS has the best of both worlds: great examples and practical technical information as well. All of the animals in the book seem exotic, whether the creature is a household pet, a farm animal, or an animal photographed in the wild. The book also has information on photographing fish in aquariums-underwater photography from dry land! Since the book was first published prior to the dawn of digital photography, digital buffs may not find the technical information in the book helpful, but everyone will find the photography inspiring!

A Great 'How to' Book.......2000-09-23

This book provides excellent details and examples of how to photograph pets (and exotic animals). The author provides tips on composition, lighting, equipment, etc. A great book for those interested in pet photography as a hobby or business.

Great Reference Book Too.......2006-10-23

"Voices of Valor" is not only a very good account of the invasion of Normandy told by eye witnesses and participants, it is very useful as a reference to someone that might not be familiar with the importance of the event and how it was carried out. The pictures are, of course, a plus as well as the two cd's. Even after reading the book, the cd's are a great listen, while traveling especially.

The heroes of June 6, 1944........2005-02-03

This is a nice book of soldiers/sailors recollection of D-Day. The book explains the outlook of a sample of soldiers for each of the 5 D-Day beaches and reviews the obstacles which they had to overcome. Along with the written book, you get two fine CDs of the various soldiers relating their experiences on this famous day. The oral history along with the summary of the battles gives an in depth picture of what these men had to face on this day. In my viewpoint, all these men were heroes because of what they had to do.
There are other books out there that portray the battle day with more detail (The Longest Day) and some who relate experiences better (most of Ambrose's books). This is an above average book and the CDs are great material. The book and CDs are great, but there are better books on this subject. This book will not disappoint.

Well-written, brilliant photographs and two fine audio CDs.......2004-06-19

This book is a great investment for your library. "Voices of Valor D-Day: June 6, 1944," by Douglas Brinkley and Ronald J. Drez is meticulously-researched, superbly written, features 116 brilliant black-and-white photographs and includes two great hour long audio CD's.

The authors use veteran accounts of D-Day from the vast collection of the Eisenhower Center for American Studies at the University of New Orleans. Brinkley and Drez skillfully place the accounts in twelve neat chapters that fully captures the military and logistic challenge of the Allies.

In essence, General Dwight Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force, executed the first successful cross-channel attack since William the Conqueror pulled it off in 1066. It was a gigantic task. To this end, the authors put the puzzel together piece by piece and allow the first hand accounts of courage and carnage to explain how it was done.

Still and all, luck played a large role in the success of the Allies. Nazi meteorologists forecast a period of disturbed weather that prompted General Erwin Rommell (Germany's best general) to leave France and proceed with a June 5 trip to see Adolf Hitler...German intelligence was convinced that the First United States Army Group positioned at Dover and commanded by General George Patton (America's best general) was poised to attack Pas-de-Calasis not Normandy...there was no German air or naval patrols during the first five days of June due to bad weather; the very weather the massive allied fleet moved through undetected...moreover what was left of the German radar system failed to pick up either the air train or the sea armada...and finally the first German reports from France of the attack on Normandy were ignored by top brass in Germany.

However, the two greatest features of this book is to point out that there was no Allied back up plan...that surprise was the key to success. And secondly, that the German Army possessed the forces capable of inflicting a last-minute defeat on the Allies...that there were massive armored divisions within three days travel to the Normandy battlefield. And that there were over sixteen hundred panzers in the west that could have been sent speeding to the battle area if Hitler issued the order.

It is incredible to think that if these forces had been brought into the battle area and dispersed in France before the British and American forces could build up...that the Germans were fully capable of delivering a devastating blow on the flanks and seams of the loose-knit Allied front. This book is a tribute to the men and women who contributed to the D-Day victory. Highly recommended.

Glorious Birds.......2006-03-28

"Wings of Spring" is the latest collection of the avian pictures of photographer Tom Vezo. It covers the courtship, nesting and fledging of birds. It is divided into four sections entitled "Territory", "Nesting" "Nurturing" and "Growing". The pictures show birds in intimate circumstances. There are pictures of birds in mating rituals; nests on prairies, cliff sides and amongst ice floes; young birds in the nest, all mouth and scrawny bodies; parents with bugs, berries and reptiles; and downy young birds, venturing out into the world.

Vezo says he was inspired by the bird pictures of the great Eliot Porter. Porter's works were made with large format cameras and huge banks of lights that allowed Porter to take pictures with a deep depth of field and include much of the environment of the birds. Vezo says that he is also interested in capturing not just the bird but it's behavior and environment and he's done that, but because he has not had to rely upon such intense flash, there is little fall off of light in the background of these pictures. Thus we see a photograph of a bird in its environment in much the same lighting as we would see the actual bird, if we were so fortunate as to be present for these activities.

Every work of art has form and content. Because Vezo places emphasis on the environment, he directs more of our attention to the content. In fact, it's interesting to compare the pictures in this book with an earlier volume of his, "Wings in the Wild". There he placed his emphasis on what might be called the near environment, that is, the branch or flower or sandbar upon which a bird was located. Depth of field (and perhaps angle of view) was more limited then in the photographs in the present book so that one was forced to concentrate upon the bird and the near environment. In "Wings of Spring" he has adopted techniques that show us much more of the environment. In fact sometimes Vezo forces us to examine the picture closely to see where the bird ends and the rest of the world begins. Comparing Vezo's earlier work to this book called to mind the dictum of the critic Mark Shorer, who said that "technique is discovery" and to understand that this rule applies as much to photography as literature or any other art. Vezo's change in the use of his tools leads us to discover more about these birds than we knew before.

Each of the pictures is accompanied by useful text by Chuck Hagner, the editor of Birder's World Magazine, that calls our attention to something going on in the picture, or provides further information about the pictured bird.

Although the book includes a picture-by-picture species list, there is no index that includes a way to look up all pictures of a particular species. Thus, while there are pictures of herring gulls under the nesting, nurturing and growing sections, there is no convenient way for the viewer to easily find and compare all the pictures of herring gulls. However, in a book of such excellent photographs of birds, this is a small complaint.
