Title is misleading...................2005-09-26
I am a beginner in every sense of the word when it comes to painting and have really struggled with painting trees. So when I did a search for "How to Paint Trees" of course this book popped up. I read whatever information was available on the book and thought "Wow, this is exactly what I'm looking for and need !!" I could not wait for the book to arrive. Well let me tell you. I was VERY disappointed. To me "How to" means I am going to show you HOW TO do something, not "let's look at a slew of finished paintings and I'll tell you WHY they did it that way !!" There are hundreds of other books available (the Walter Foster series comes to mind) that are much better. I paid $27.99 for my copy and see that are a few available for less than $10. That stokes the fire just a little more. My advice--- if you're a novice look elsewhere. If you're advanced it is very likely you already know what's in this book. Perhaps middle grounders will find it useful. I surely did not.
Very Informative.......2003-03-13
I find that this book contains a lot of basic useful information.Though I have been painting for some time it serves as a good way to review the basics. The art shown will give you ideas for your own work. All in all a very good book for this type of subject matter.
How to Paint Trees, Flowers and Foliage.......2002-06-28
I think that this book was a waste of time. I bought this book in the hope that it would help me and my friends on the real word to strive to a glorious finish in our painting, that we were going to show in an oncoming show(now we can't because we do not want the embarassment of showing what we painted) I wanted to learn how to paint beautiful flowers for our house but I couldn't due to the poor job of the author of the book. The only information that it gave me was the stuff that I already know. now after spending [good money] plus shipping I am in even more debt than I already was. So thanks to that book I might have to go live in a shelter just because I wanted to be liked by my house mates even more than i already am.
So if you were thinking of buying this book, DO NOT!!! it is terrible!!!!!!!!!!
How to Paint Trees, Flowers and Foliage.......2000-12-09
This is one great book for step by step samples and area that may need special attention.
I especially liked the step by step pictures showing how to lay down the medium and building up tones and adding details with final touches. There is much more in this book and is a great asset to beginning artist and seasoned artist to learn different techniques.

If you are interested in this book, please purchase the 2nd printing of the 1st edition. The quality of paper used for the black & white photos is much better than was the case in the initial printing.
The paper used for the 12 color plates was very good in both the 1st and 2nd printings. I believe the book would have sold many more copies had the paper quality been addressed properly from the outset.

Excellent lab manual for aerial photo-interpretation.......2002-10-17
Sometimes it gets a little too detailed (like mentioning the brand of pens commonly used) and the book would be easier to manage if the photos and plates were all in a separate binding (so you can read the text and look at the photos). Some computer based exercises would be good to see what direction the science is moving in. But all in all, a good introduction to aerial photograph interpretation.

The Everything Landlord Book by Judy Tremore.......2006-07-10
This book is perfect for the new landlord who knows little about
owning property. The authors explain relations with the local
government and tenants. The book advises landlords never to
shut down utilities, throw out tenant belongings, change locks
without notice, throw out pets or intimidate. Owners are encouraged to respect tenant property and privacy. There is an extensive section on dealing with repair people and researching mechanics liens. Managers are urged to examine the profit/loss statements carefully-taking into consideration all relevant costs. The acquisition is a perfect primer on the mechanics of landlord/tenant relations.
The author lists the Institute of Real Estate Management and
various organizations which assist landlords in screening tenants. i.e. tsi.com

Essential for parents.......2001-07-31
Along with Jim Trelease's Read-Aloud Handbook, this is a book no parent should be without. It contains short, to the point versions of every story you half-remember hearing when you were a kid (sure, the ugly duckling turns out to be a swan at the end, but do you remember what happens in between?), nursery rhymes and the lyrics to children's songs, and Aesop's fables ý all essential for parents to share with children. When it comes time to tell a bedtime story, I'd be lost without this book.
I'll Tell You A Story, I'll Sing You A Song.......2000-05-13
A must have book for any parent. It inspires me to be a storyteller and fun mom. Great reference for songs and rhymes you just can't remember.
Now you can sing your kids the whole song........1999-04-05
Like the author, I've always loved singing to my kids, but there were many songs to which I didn't know all of the words. I happened upon this book when I used to work in a bookstore and now send copies to anyone I know who is expecting. It covers it all, songs, fables, lullabies, etc. Very worth the inexpensive price!
Book Description
The first phase of the Civil War was fought west of the Mississippi River at least six years before the attack on Fort Sumter. Starting with the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act in 1854, Jay Monaghan traces the development of the conflict between the pro-slavery elements from Missouri and the New England abolitionists who migrated to Kansas. "Bleeding Kansas" provided a preview of the greater national struggle to come.
The author allows a new look at Quantrill's sacking of Lawrence, organized bushwhackery, and border battles that cost thousands of lives. Not the least valuable are chapters on the American Indians’ part in the conflict. The record becomes devastatingly clear: the fighting in the West was the cruelest and most useless of the whole affair, and if men of vision had been in Washington in the 1850s it might have been avoided.

Almost Any Book But This.......2006-11-05
As a Missourian and a professional historian, I looked forward to reading what many consider a classic (even Boatner cites Monaghan). I was misled. This is an insufferable book, almost unreadable, a waste of time. Presuming to knowledge he cannot have, the author is pleased to describe (without citations) the innermost thoughts of historical figures. He insists on calling William Clark Quantrill "Charles;" writes Elias Boudinet for Elias Boudinot. Wallows in cliches (e.g. calls James Lane "the Grim Chieftan" at every opportunity until you want to gag) and racial stereotypes (e.g. his characterization of the "primeval passions" of naturally savage Indians, p. 210; see also every reference to black people). His writing style is so florid and bombastic at times as to rob it of clarity. Thus, while he describes obscure battles covered by few other scholars (hence the second star), it's sometimes hard to tell what's going on. If you want the politics of Bleeding Kansas and the early days of the war in Missouri, see the second volume of Nevins's classic "Emergence of Lincoln" and the first volume of "War for the Union;" if you are interested in the bitterness and hatred that fueled the violence in Missouri during and after the war, Fellman's "Inside War" is the book to read. But don't bother with Monaghan.
A wonderful account.......2002-08-20
This book explains very well why there was so much violence in the Western scenario. If you like, it also explains the violence following the civil war in the reconstruction era. If you are used to draw a gun whenever you see a political opponent one should not be surprised about the cruelties committed by the Klan after the war.
This book also shows the problematic stand the civilized (Indian) nations were confronted with, being forced to choose between Union or Confederacy.
To all Southerners, this is a ballanced account descibing that particular period of time. Buy it.
Never Let Me Down.......2000-07-02
A very well written book on the history of the Civil war west of the Mississippi. Monaghan covers many of the battles I had tried in vain to locate details on. Covered are the battles of: Carthage, Wilson's Creek, Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove, and Westport. I especially found interesting the involvement of the Five Nations out of Oklahoma. Much is covered concerning the conflicts between Kansas and Missouri, but Texas, Arkansas and others are treated with some detail. Monaghan's writing style is excellent, giving you a good feeling for what happened. You will read and re-read this one.
Top Three All-Time Best.......1999-11-25
Fanatical politics of the western frontier, immigrant abolitionists with loaded Spencer rifles funded by mysterious personages back East, cut-throats, gin heads and horse thieves, colorful character descriptions... This book ranks up there with Pea Ridge by Shea and The Civil War by Foote. Absoltuley a must read.

Book Description
A history of the Atomic Bomb from Marie Curie to Hiroshima.
“I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”
— Oppenheimer quoting the Bhagavad Gita after witnessing the successful demonstration of the atom bomb.
The bomb, which killed an estimated 140,000 civilians in Hiroshima and destroyed the countryside for miles around, was one of the defining moments in world history. That mushroom cloud cast a terrifying shadow over the contemporary world and continues to do so today. But how could this have happened? What led to the creation of such a weapon of mass destruction?
From the moment scientists contemplated the destructive potential of splitting the atom, the role of science changed. Ethical and moral dilemmas faced all those who realized the implications of their research.
Before the Fall-Out charts the chain of events from Marie Curie’s scientific breakthrough through the many colourful characters such as Einstein, Robert Oppenheimer and Lord Rutherford, whose discoveries contributed to the bomb.
The story of the atomic bomb spans 50 years of prolific scientific innovation, turbulent politics, foreign affairs and world-changing history. Through personal stories of exile, indecision and soul-searching, to charges of collaboration, spying and deceit, Diana Preston presents the human side of an unstoppable programme with a lethal outcome.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Fasinating account.......2007-07-21
This is a study from Marie Curie's scientific breakthrough through to developing the bomb. Almost all this book comes from the science world which I found interesting. I very much enjoyed reading the stories of the scientific characters.
You will however find little in the book on the military, politicians and engineers all who made as great a contribution. There is only a bit about the pilots who had trained almost a year for this mission.
There is also an interesting what-if section at the end.
Some issues I do have with the book were I found some of the answers on the use of the bomb doubtful. The writer assumes that it had in part something to do with the US trying to use it to terrify the Russians. There is little evidence for this.
Also her reasons for ending the war in the Pacific centered too much on the Japan and the US. Yet others were involved. Possibly the Russian entering the war probably was more important to Japan surrender then the US bomb.
Furthermore the US could not have offered Japan better terms at Potsdam without causing major political problems both internally and externally as she had agreed that Unconditional Surrender policy earlier with her allies at the Casablanca conference. Because of the bomb and the Russian entry into the war there was no reason to upset them.
Also the losses in the Pacific conflict were producing about 20,000 deaths a day that were not US or Japan - some notable examples were the Chinese, Indonesians, Indo China, Burma etc. If the bomb speeded up the end of the war by one month it saved several 100,000's of these people too. These people should also be considered in the moral calculation that the writer proposes.

if one loves those graceful birds of prey ,this book is a must.......2007-02-13
this book leaves no aspect on falcons uncovered , it is full of useful information , pictures and illustrations that would prove invalueble . breeds ,habits ,diet, and healthcare ...etc. thus paving the way to a great experience living and hunting with these birds.
Still a bible.......2002-07-04
For anyone seriously considering falconry this is still THE bible albeit there are some ommissions from a US perspective. I have nearly 20 years experience and have read virtually every recognised book on the subject. This is still the book I refer back to the most. A classic.
Falconry and Hawking.......2002-02-28
My argument with this book is with its American publisher and not the author. Even the author expressed a need for more updating in his preface to this 3rd edition. Although published as a revised edition in 1998 it was first published in 1978. Other than the chapter on Health and Disease chapter it has had very little editing to bring it up to date. If you are buying the book thinking you are getting up to date information relating to American falconry you will be very disappointed. The laws in the United Kingdom are very different than ours. In the United States you are required to trap your 1st bird, a Redtail or Kestrel, from the wild. The author is from England where trapping your own bird is illegal. So the information on trapping in the book is very sparse. If you turn to Appendix I for, Some Useful Address, you'll find the address for the North American Falconers Asso. invalid and an address for Pete Asborno bells even though he has passed away. The publisher's claim that this book is the most comprehensive book ever written on the sport is very debatable and with regards to American falconry is absolutely false! The book, North American Falconry and Hunting Hawks, is not only more comprehensive but also up to date. You will probably have to find it at a specialized falconry retailer but it is in print. It's now in its 8th edition and a far better choice for an aspiring American Falconer.
With all my criticism of the publisher, I have none of the author or the book if it was properly represented. It is an excellent, modern classic falconry book that deserves to remain in print.
THE NESSARY FALCONRY BOOK.......2000-04-15
This book is the necessary book you must have with you, all is explain with simplicity, photographies and pictures. Step by step you will know everything you must know about falconry and hawking.I'm an old falconner and this book is precious for example to make hoods, lure, and pratice medical actions on our birds.

Classical Falconry.......2006-02-09
The poor quality pictoral cover, binding and printing detract from what should be a very classy limited edition falconry book. For $125.00 I expect more than this.
BRILLIANT.......2005-06-18
Nick has done it again!
This book is such a wonderful glimpse into the experience of mounted crow hawking, that the reader feels as though they are in attendance on one of the hunts in northern England. No mind-numbing tedium here... if you're fed up with falconry books that waste time and space with all the usual repetitive "how-to" stuff of falconry (equipment, training, basic husbandry) you will be pleasantly surprised by Nick's ability to cut right to the proverbial heart of the matter. This is without a doubt the best, and most complete book ever written on the topic of hawking from horseback in open country.
