Book Description
Letitia Baldrige is the woman best known as Jackie Kennedy's social secretary during the White House years. But in this fascinating memoir Baldrige reveals a career sparkling with a host of other achievements: embassy work in an era when women rarely were given jobs overseas, becoming the first female executive at Tiffany & Co., and founding one of the first companies run by a female CEO. In her amazing life story Baldrige shares her perspective as a White House insider: the hilarity of young Jackie's antics on foreign diplomatic visits, the terror of the Cuban missile crisis, and the heartbreak of President Kennedy's funeral. Stylish, chic and always polite, Baldrige reveals the determination that has made her a success and brought her the admiration of women around the world.

Review of shipping: Beware of buying this book from Amazon...........2007-03-18
I placed my order for this book on Jan 28th, and it said it would be here around March 23 (which I thought was too long, but was willing to wait). Today I got an e-mail saying it would be further delayed and will not arrive until May 9th! This looks like a lovely book, but you're better off getting it at your local bookstore! :)
A Pleasure, and a Surprise.......2006-08-05
I've always enjoyed Ms. Baldridge's books, and this was no exception. I was expecting, knowing nothing about it beforehand, that it would be yet more nostalgia about the Kennedy White House. Thankfully, it wasn't. That period of her life occupied part of the book, but not even the major part. Actually, I enjoyed most the part about her time working for Tiffany & Co. It's great bedside reading.
Terrific! .......2006-05-29
I had this on my shelf for several years before finally reading it--and now I regret waiting so long! This is a captivating story told by someone uniquely placed in several high-level positions: aid to David & Evangeline Bruce in France; aid to Clare Booth Luce and Henry Luce in Italy; and chief of staff to Jackie Kennedy. In addition to this, Ms. Baldrige was the first woman executive at Tiffany's, and held a high level position at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. But what really endears her to the reader is Ms. Baldrige's way of telling hilarious stories on herself--the things that go askew during a dinner party, for example. She took her work very seriously, but is modest enough to tell stories on herself that can make one dissolve in laughter. I came away from this book with a higher appreciation of all that she has done. She is very likeable!
Product Review.......2005-09-06
The product arrived in excellent condition, within the specified time period, and I am very happy with it.
Thanks
Class from the past!.......2003-07-02
Oh! how I wish I had a life like Tish Baldridge's! She is a gutsy and classy lady and I admire her for that. I loved to read that book because it goes to show that dreams come true when we put the energy and efforts for them to materialize.

NYC 40's.......2006-11-13
Like other books in the series, captures a moment that has been lost as the world changes! Great piece for those who were there or are there now.
New York tension.......2006-05-04
This book is not just great history, it is also great art; and for those of us who have had the good fortune to have lived in this city for some years, it is also personal history, a biography of ourselves. Feininger shows brilliantly the tension that exists in New York between humanity and modernity, between glitter and true human feelings. To me this seems almost Hopperesque, although with less stringency. Andreas Feininger is not unlike his father a master in the portrayal of affectionate structures.
NY in the 40s.......2000-04-20
Compared to Dover's Old New York in Early Photographs you really see how NY has changed. The photos are starting to get very familiar. Maybe you even ask yourself, as an Italian, living in a medievil town, why did they knock down those beautiful late 19th century buildings for sky scrappers. The photo of of "fisherman on Sheepshead Bay" offers us the only sense of tranquility. Scary.
Book Description
Description: "The camera is superior to the eye, and the photograph can, and ideally should, portray the world more graphic than reality itself." --Andreas Feininger The basic principles underlying the photographic art of Andreas Feininger are clarity, simplicity, and organization. The eldest son of painter Lyonel Feininger, he was born in Paris in 1906. Upon completion of training as a cabinet-maker at the Bauhaus in Weimar in the early 20s, he went on to study architecture in the state schools of Weimar and Zerbst. It was while working as an architectural photographer in Stockholm that he developed the sweeping vistas and fine balance for which his pictures were famous. Emigrating to New York following the outbreak of World War II, Feininger was hired as a photo-editor by Life magazine. In his own work, he captured images of urban canyons, skyscrapers, bridges, and elevated railways in concentrated, atmospheric photographs that are regarded as classical works today. He applied the same enthusiasm to nature studies: his detail images of insects, flowers, shells, wood, and stones imbue these forms with a sculptural character. That's Photography presents the work of this classic photographer, who died in 1999.

Customer Reviews:
Great Reference .......2006-04-27
I found this book to be a great overview with lots of examples. It's been shared around our office over and over again!
Jam Packed with Samples.......2005-05-14
In addition to advice on how to write successful fundraising letters, this book contains hundreds of models, samples, and excerpts of actual letters. One section covers letters soliciting volunteer help. (summary by South TX Library System)
This book has 378 pages, so chances are very good that you will find a sample letter close to what you need. Inexperienced letter writers tend to be too wordy and turn off their potential funders. I really recommend that people pay close attention to the advice in this book.
The most frequently borrowed fund raising book I own.......2001-04-25
Chapter 15, Obtaining Substantial Financial Support with the Foundation and Corporate Request Letter, is the most dog-eared chapter of my copy. Government and non-profit colleagues whose core job and expertise is not in the area of fund raising, love this book.
moderately helpful.......2000-07-14
My pleasure in the book was minimized when I came to the sections on telemarketing, etc. . . not what I expected. The portions of the book that were helpful, were A-1.
Extremely useful shelf-reference for fund-raisers.......1999-11-18
Not only does this book offer real-life examples of letters for every conceivable fund-raising campaign and situation, it explains the structure of successful fund-raising letters. I refer to it frequently. 5 stars I reserve for anything written by Mal Warwick, who is in a class by himself. But 4 stars means I found Mr. Kuniholm's book well worth the money, repeatedly useful, practical, educational and wise.
Book Description
This work, which takes Garrett Hardin's essay "The Tragedy of the Commons" (Science, 1968) as its reference point, examines aspects of the public realmwhether much or little of it ought to be part of a free society; what problems a too abundant commons poses to governance; what alternatives can be implemented where the commons have posed serious obstacles to efficiency and justiceby looking at the following:
What is the tragedy of the commons?
Why is there a tragedy here?
What is affected by the tragedy?
Is there a way out of this tragedy?
What is the proper scope of the public realm?
These and related matters are the topics contributors to this volume examine. The main insight shared is that human individuality, as a central element of human nature, needs to be properly accommodated in a system of community life, in law, and in public policy. Moreover, placing what arguably belongs within the realm of nonpolitical governance under the rubric of public management poses serious public policy problems.

Book Description
In this book Katherine Arens offers a series of case studies that redefine what 'reading culture' can mean in literary and cultural studies. The first part traces the ways in which authors borrow and rewrite literary traditions across national lines, in order to address problems in their own cultures' histories. In the second set of essays, Professor Arens illustrates how literature can cross other kinds of cultural boundaries, especially those between disciplines; for example, plotting a story as if it were on a stage allows Grillparzer to tell two simultaneous stories at odds with each other; and two artists interested in large-group art (Christo and Judy Chicago) manipulate their images as modernists to achieve different careers.
Book Description
The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill is the inspiring story of how one man found his life’s work—and true love—among a gang of wild parrots roosting in one of America’s most picturesque urban settings.
Mark Bittner was down on his luck. He’d gone to San Francisco at the age of twenty-one to take a stab at a music career, but he hadn’t had much success. After many years as an odd-jobber in the area, he accepted work as a housekeeper for an elderly woman. The gig came with a rent-free studio apartment on the city’s famed Telegraph Hill, which had somehow become home to a flock of brilliantly colored wild parrots.
In this unforgettable story, Bittner recounts how he became fascinated by the birds and made up his mind to get to know them and gain their trust. He succeeds to such a degree that he becomes the local wild parrot expert and a tourist attraction. People can’t help gawking at the man who, during daily feedings, stands with parrots perched along both arms and atop his head. When a documentary filmmaker comes along to capture the phenomenon on film, the story takes a surprising turn, and Bittner’s life truly takes flight.
Customer Reviews:
Really good book.......2007-07-20
This book was recommended to me by someone whose taste in books I questioned. However, I must say this is a well-written, fascinating book. For animals lovers, in particular, you will truly enjoy this story.
Parrots for everyone!.......2007-07-12
What a thrill to learn about Mark Bittner's love and care of the flock of (mostly) cherryheads. I'm not even a bird person, but I was just mesmerized a couple of years ago by a story I heard on NPR about a flock of parrots. I'm still not sure it was the San Francisco flock, but imagine my surprise when I saw Mark's book on my emailed Page-A-Day calendar.
Reading the story was like being there. I learned to like Mark in spite of my reservations in the beginning; couldn't wait to watch the film.
Only a week after finishing the book, I was reading the intro to another book and the author (Jim Palmer) introduced himself as a lover of quirky films that no one else knows about, like "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill." I considered it a "God-sign."
Read this book; you'll love it.
Love on Wings.......2007-06-27
I throughly enjoyed this true story with a happy ending.
It was written with heart and soul.
And touched mine.
Even better than the movie.......2007-01-03
I watched the movie prior to reading the book.
I enjoyed both but in particular the book.
Mark is a very good writer, especially when you consider that he has no formal training, that I am aware of.
This is a book that you can read again a few months later and be entertained all over again.
On the Wings of Love..........2006-12-26
They say he may have been a modern bohemian Saint Francis living in San Francisco and befriending wild parrots. Or maybe he was simply a man returning (for some time) to the original state of humankind living in harmony with the creatures. Yes, this is the story of wild parrots and a semi-wild man and how they danced, sang, ate seeds, and lived together for six years. Perched high upon a hill overlooking the San Francisco bay, the ancient story of human befriending wild beasts unfolded. The kind of tale that fascinates us today just as it would have fascinated our ancestors in ancient times. Such stories will always fascinate us humans, whenever a gentle, loving heart opens itself to the magic and mystery of creation and engages in a dance of truth with life.
Mark Bittner writes: "In 1988, I took a job as the caretaker of a house on the east side of Telegraph Hill. Two years later I spotted four parrots in the gardens outside my home. Within three years the flock had grown to twenty-six, and I was in love. I spent the next six years making friends with them and learning their ways... I watched them for several years with tremendous curiosity. What were wild parrots doing in San Francisco? Then one day a few of them flew to my fire escape, and my whole life changed..."
In 1996 Mark began writing a book about his experiences with these colorful, fascinating birds. He came to know each parrot individually and personally. Each one has its unique personality, quirks, friendships, courtships, and life pathways. Mark wrote his observations in a journal of the lives of Mingus, Connor, Picasso, Sophie, Olive, Pushkin, Tupelo, and many other parrots whom he named, fed, observed, cared for, and befriended. He also photographed the birds, with stunning results. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill: A Love Story... With Wings is the highly acclaimed, charming, and best-selling result of Mark's six years with the birds.
Judy Irving, a filmmaker, began creating a documentary of Mark's work with the parrots in 1998. This resulted in her extraordinary documentary, also called The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. Although the title is the same as the book, the book and film focus on somewhat different aspects of the story. The film (available on DVD) is as much a study of Mark as it is of the parrots. While working on the film, Judy and Mark fell in love. They are now married and living in the gardens of Telegraph Hill. Mark is currently working on a book about his years of living on the street prior to his encounter with the parrots. Judy continues making her high quality films on the environment.
If you read the book or watch the film, you will find that Mark's bird-friends become your friends. James D. Gilardi, Ph.D., Director of the World Parrot Trust, writes: "By falling in with a flock of wild parrots, Bittner has learned more about a real parrot society than those of us studying wild or captive parrots could ever hope to learn." But of course, the book isn't just about parrots. As one reviewer of Mark's book wrote: "By the end of his tale, you will no longer see humans as the center of the universe, if you ever did." And by the time the screen credits are rolling at the end of the film, you will find yourself transformed by this beautifully touching and compelling story.
What I loved especially about both the film and the book is experiencing how Mark himself evolves and transforms through his relationship with the parrots and eventually through his relationship with Judy. He was a lost musician, a street person, a post-beatnik, searching for truth and "right living" as taught by Buddhism. He took odd jobs, tried this and that, but never quite found his path. Until he met the parrots. And then Judy. We sense that the story is far from over, and we yearn to know more of its unfolding... I wish that Judy and Mark would write, or document in film or photographs, more about their personal lives since the publication and dissemination of their book and film. The film opens you up to the delight of these two people, and one yearns to know more. Like the parrots, Judy and Mark have become our friends through the magic of the book and film.
To experience the magic yourself, view the film or DVD, read the book, view Mark's photos, and check out Mark's and Judy's websites. You'll be glad that you did! Beautiful story, beautiful people, beautiful birds.
Yes, if you are a lover of nature, both human and animal, I highly recommend this book and the film/DVD.
Book Description
In the Guadalupe Dunes, 170 miles north of Los Angeles and 250 miles south of San Francisco, an oil spill persisted unattended for 38 years. Over the period 1990-1996, the national press devoted 504 stories to the Exxon Valdez accident and a mere nine to the Guadalupe spill--even though the latter is most likely the nation's largest recorded oil spill. Although it was known to oil workers in the field where it originated, to visiting regulators, and to locals who frequented the beach, the Guadalupe spill became troubling only when those involved could no longer view the sight and smell of petroleum as normal. This book recounts how this change in perception finally took place after nearly four decades and what form the response took.
Taking a sociological perspective, Thomas Beamish examines the organizational culture of the Unocal Corporation (whose oil fields produced the leakage), the interorganizational response of regulatory agencies, and local interpretations of the event. He applies notions of social organization, social stability, and social inertia to the kind of environmental degradation represented by the Guadalupe spill. More important, he uses the Guadalupe Dunes case as the basis for a broader study of environmental "blind spots." He argues that many of our most pressing pollution problems go unacknowledged because they do not cause large-scale social disruption or dramatic visible destruction of the sort that triggers responses. Finally, he develops a model of social accommodation that helps explain why human systems seem inclined to do nothing as trouble mounts.
Book Description
California is a great place for wild birds and the people who enjoy watching them. Over 600 bird species--about two-thirds of the birds found in North America--inhabit, migrate, or visit here, especially the varied habitats protected within California's parks, forests, preserves, parks, and wildlife areas. This lavishly-photographed volume features usual and unusual birds in their wildland homes, throughout California seashores, deserts, mountains, wetlands, foothills, valleys, and chaparral country. The ever-present California Gull and the magnificent (and rare) California Condor are included plus 107 other species of wild birds. Extensive captions accompany more than 150 color photographs by some of Californias' premier bird photographers. Wild Birds of California is a tribute to the Golden State's tremendous wealth of wild birds and to the wild natural areas that sustain this abundance. These sanctuaries--nine National Parks, thirty-seven National Wildlife Refuges, eighteen National Forests and many other preserves, parks, and wildlife areas--protect exuberant concentrations of bird life and habitats critical to their life cycles.
Customer Reviews:
Wild Birds of California.......2005-07-25
Wild Birds of California is a beautiful book.
It did not have all the information about the birds
that I was looking for in a book. It makes a lovely
book for the coffee table.
Lush photography, excellent for novice birders.......2002-11-09
The photography in this book is superlative and the main reason to purchase it is to admire the lush color photos of California's birds. However, I also enjoy the book because it allows me, as a novice birder, to learn to correctly identify various species. This book is much superior to an Audubon guide or a National Geographic Filed Guild to birds because each photo is huge and shows the birds to their best advantage. The photo of the elusive great gray owl is simply outstanding!
I recommend this book for anyone who has an appreciation of birds and wants to vicariously see them through this medium. It will definitely prompt every armchair birder to take to the field and spy these wondrous creatures in their natural habitat. There are several birds I saw in this book which captured my fancy immediately: the black oystercatcher and the Lazula Bunting, for instance. By seeing these photos, it prompted me to go out and beat the trails and shorelines to see each of these birds up close and "in person." A great book!
Wild about Wild Birds of California!.......2000-10-16
An outstanding book for two reasons: 1) The photographs by the 26 contributing photographers. Each one is a work of art; excelling in composition and use of color. Kudos on the photography in this book. 2) The text by David Lukas is not only informative and educational but thoroughly enjoyable reading. The text accompanying the photgraphs adds an interesting dimension to the image of the bird. Not the typical statement you would expect to read (and if you know birds, already know.) A great book to own or to give.

There is such beauty in this book.......2005-10-29
The photographs are stunning and the message clear and compelling. To the person who reviewed this and called Pat Derby and Ed Stewart hypocrits, you really missed the point. They have provided an amazing sanctuary for these animals and others. They do not promote keeping animals in capitivity, they simply are caring for those that are unfortunetly, already captive. They are providing a wonderful place for them to iive out their lives with the hopes that there will not be a need in the future to provide sanctuary for any others, though sadly, that seems to be only a dream.
THE PHOTOS ALONE ARE WORTH IT!.......2000-03-08
This is a sweet little book with wonderful photos of these elephants "71" and Mara growing up and finding contentment at PAWS in galt CA. The photos are so touching. It's more of a picture book...a documentary told in beautiful black and white photos...I loved it! the photos alone are worth the price!
Support this cause.......1999-05-14
In defense of this book, I am compelled to support the spirit of its purpose. Yes it is published by people with captive elephants, but the elephants in this book are now as free as they can be, at the home of PAWS, (Performing Animal Welfare Society) where "abandoned or abused performing animals and victims of the exotic animal trade can live in peace and contentment." They may be visited in person at their Galt, California sanctuary. Kudos to an organization that does not glorify the human entertainment of training wild animals to perform unnatural acts.
Don't be fooled.......1998-06-14
This is a book full of pictures of elephants, NOT a Peter S. Beagle book. He wrote a few paragraphs of an introduction, nothing else. In terms of the rest of the book, it is bland and hypocritical; the authors bemoan the fact of captive elephants, while keeping captive elephants. The pictures are poor quality as well.
