"Building Type Basics for Recreational Facilities" is an essential guide for anyone contemplating the design and construction of recreation facilities, be they owner, developer or architect. Although, as stated in Stephen Kliment's excellent preface, it is "not a coffee table book", it does have a section containing 26 color plates of some of the more interesting projects.
It is a utilitarian book --- an architect's contemporary "Graphic Standards" for recreation facilities. It makes easier the programming and planning of every conceivable type of recreation project, plus some this reviewer had never heard of! The majority of projects are complete with sketches, floor plans and photographs. There are numerous charts and design standards. Every area of concern is covered from basic programming through design, engineering systems, interiors, operation and maintenance to costing/financing and sustainability issues.
"Building Type Basics for Recreational Facilities" is a well designed book, with text that spells out clearly and simply guidelines for the design of a myriad of recreational project types ---a vital tool for the experienced and as well first time owner, developer and architect.

I can't say enough about this book. It doesn't matter if you are experianced or have never touched a pastel before, everyone can gain something from this wonderful book. Not only does she lay out the different materials and papers, she touches on just about everything such as color theory, perspective and composition. This is so much more than just a book on pastels. Beyond all the useful info, the pictures are just so inspiring and beautiful to look at. If you only buy one pastel book, let it be this one.

A practical and comprehensive instruction pastel workbook. Nicely laid out and easy on the eye too. The author has in mind the beginner who also needs encouragement to paint as well as adding ideas about creativity to the work not just frontal art instruction and just techniques. Definately a new generation of instruction where development of ideas, creativity, inspiration, confidence building, self assesment, demonstrations are all integrated. I also enjoyed looking at the examples used to instruct pastel painting and these were very varied giving a wide idea about what can be done with pastels. I really recomend this book for the beginner pastel artist as well as an art instructor who wants to develop an art workshop and needs some ideas. Jason Alster- author-

This book is old school having been written in 1988. The first half of the book , all pictures are in black and white. The rest are somewhat washed out and lackluster.It has the basic fundamentals and what not and good as a reference.Spend your money on up to date books and leave this one for the library.

I expected a more expanded time period history of Baltimore from at least the mid 1800's to date. However it is still a fairly good read.

My husband and I both grew up in the 40's and early 50's in Baltimore City. He in Irvington and I in Walbrook. We both found this book entertaining and informative. And we had fun reminiscing! If you want to get re-acquainted with your hometown, I would highly recommend this book.

Clear Approach and Good Examples Make this a Useful Read.......2002-08-05
What are the characteristics of an effective and powerful board? For Mark Light, it is a board that is "visionary about the future, explicit in delegating that future into the present, clear about the tasks that must be executed today, and disciplined about monitoring performance." It "...focuses its energy on making sure that the organization achieves its chosen destiny."
The process for creating such a board is the focus of The Strategic Board. In Light's view, the ideal board builds its agenda around the creation and implementation of a governance plan consisting of four sub-plans:
1. a leadership plan, articulating vision, mission, strategies, critical issues (he calls these "imperatives"), and success indicators;
2. a delegation plan, defining the responsibilities and performance standards of the board (including its members, officers, and committees) and executive director;
3. a twelve-month management plan for the board and for each functional area of the organization stating annual objectives, challenges to be addressed, and budget;
4. a "vigilance plan," that serves as a monitoring schedule and provides the main agenda items the board's meetings for the coming year.
The book includes examples of each type of plan, drawn from the theatre company where the author serves as executive director and from a Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. The examples are very helpful in following the logic of each planning process.
In an interesting introduction, Light suggests that any effort to improve nonprofit governance must take into account seven realities of nonprofit organizations:
1. part-time volunteer directors are able to give only limited time to the tasks of governance;
2. boards operate with something less than perfect knowledge, creating a dilemma for the both the board and executive director as they must each be both servant and leader to the other;
3. boards tend to be fairly large, making decision-making a lengthy and complicated process;
4. for many boards, the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required for effective governance are not seen as a prerequisite for recruitment;
5. there are few consequences for poor performance, and little recognition for excellent board performance;
6. consistency and continuity are problems for many boards from year-to-year and even from meeting-to-meeting due to poor attendance and turnover of members and officers;

The author draws upon a number of sources in nonprofit literature to support his thesis, making the endnotes a useful link to follow-up reading. He also sprinkles the text with the wisdom of motivational writers and speakers. This will be enjoyed by readers who are inspired by such writing. Personally, I think these oversimplified inspirational messages detract from the otherwise strong and thoughtful text.
Overall, there is much in this book to stimulate creative thinking. The concepts are well-explained and illustrated with good examples. On the negative side, it suffers from too much jargon (e.g. "high-impact governance") and like so many "how-to" books, tends to underestimate the time and effort necessary to transform intentions into action. Still, it is a serious and thoughtful effort to build boards capable of the leadership needed by strong and effective organizations. Most executive directors and board members will find some new and challenging ideas to consider.
Finally -- a nonprofit executive writes about boards........2001-06-04
Literally dozens of books about boards have come out in the past few years. This one stands out from the crowd because it's written by a seasoned and successful nonprofit executive with a pragmatic and reality-based approach to governance. Wonderful essays for maturing and aging sex positive feminists.......2005-12-26
Let me say up front that I have enjoyed everything Bright has written. This book is a collection of essays that deal with gender, sex, sexuality, being a parent, privacy, and more. Bright's writing in this book deals more with issues such as being a parent, which makes sense given that she has a child. However, this is not written for the desperate housewives set (though they could benefit from reading i). Bright continues to write in a direct manner, that is honest and truthful without being harsh. Definitely worth reading.
Title is rather deceiving.......2005-02-14
So, I bought this book thinking I was going to learn how to "open up to sexual creativity and erotic expression" but mostly what I got was "The World According to Susie." While some of her insights were actually quite good, I found the book disjointed. Rarely did it deliver what the title promised.
My first Susie Bright book. :).......2003-01-17
This was my first Susie Bright book, as it was the only one I could find at the bookstore near my house. It didn't look as appealing as her others I'd heard of, but, if this is her worst, she's doing really well! Bright deals openly, honestly, and often humorously, with a subject others can be far, far too closeted about: sexuality. How our creative sexual energy is present in everything we do, and the negative effects of denying that simple fact, are both dealt with eloquently.
At points, however, I felt like I was just being told things I already know. Still, isn't that a good feeling, when you see your thoughts & opinions validated in print by someone who has managed to publish them? And I can't say I'd already thought about everything she discussed, so there was still some educational value. Bright managed to ask a lot of thought-provoking questions that, if you try hard to honestly answer them, could change the way you look at the world.
All in all, _Full Exposure_ was a quick, fun, witty, smart, thought-provoking read. I'd definitely recommend it.
Roll Your Own Sexual Revolution!.......2002-01-18
I found in Full Exposure a wonderful, sex-positive volume, melding philosophy, apologetics, and personal anecdotes. I enjoy Susie Bright's casting the burden of proof onto the naysayers, requiring that the repressed and the frightened justify their censorious dogma. And when they try, she shoots them down, like beer cans lined up on the back fence.
She does, after all, write about (a fantasy of) making love to Dan Quayle ... reading that was the most I'd ever appreciated the man--and this leads to one of her _dogmas_: "Assume everybody is sexual."
This is not a heavyweight philosophical deconstruction of the sexual attitudes of western society, but it is a nice guerilla attack on the sexual terrorism embedded in our culture. Susie encourages the readers to roll their own sexual manifestos, to question the manipulative & schizophrenic messages that we receive about sexuality, sensuality, and our bodies from the culture around us.
A wonderful book to read if you're engaged in sexual liberation, whether from a sex-hating religion or from the commercial cooption of sexuality that constantly bombards us. A great starting point for your own sexual revolution!

Healthly Attitude.......2001-05-01
A very interesting author wrote this book. She significantly points out how we do limit our sexuality and how we can expand our thinking of our own sexual beings and this is perfectly OKAY! The author is very sensible and quite funny and this was really enjoyable reading. She explains it what we know in our hearts to be true about truth and sex and living and dealing with both. This book was very open, intelligent and honest and spoke of the sexual issues we should be discussing with our own partner and they should be the one listening

A Primary Source History Book.......2000-09-09
Most history books are dull. Not this one!
I came across this book at a garage sale. I thought it might be useful to get ideas for History Day topics for my kids. I found it so interesting and well written that I read it cover to cover.
The reader learns history the way historians do-using primary sources. The book shows how to analyze letters, speeches, newspaper articles, maps, advertisements, statistical data, court records, and first person accounts. This is not a comprehensive history book, but rather a historical sampling of 15 topics. Some of the topics are "Conceptualizing the Modern World (1500s)", "The Confucian Family (1600-1800)", Islamic Fundamentalism and Renewal in West Africa (ca.1775-1820)", and "Globalism and Tribalism: Challenges to the Contemporary Nation-State (1980's-1990s)".
The Authors give a brief background, questions to consider, and suggestions to help the reader analyze the primary sources. I would strongly recommend this book to advanced placement high school or college level history teachers. It teaches critical thinking in a way rarely found in history texts.

Never Go Observing Without It.......2005-02-27
I have a well used, copy of this book that I find essential while planning a nights viewing session; I also keep it next to my telescope when observing. As the title suggests, only deep sky objects such as nebulas and galaxies are covered. Objects like the moon and planets are "shallow sky" objects and aren't listed. Most of the objects are probably visible in telescopes of medium size from dark sky locations.
This book is divided into 3 main portions. The first briefly covers various types of objects, and equipment and techniques to observe them. The next part lists constellations seasonally. Deep sky objects are listed along with descriptions and star-hopping methods for locating them. The last part is a Mag 6 star atlas, with all the listed objects shown.
One of the other reviewers bemoaned that the descriptions don't mention the pages they appear in the atlas. I agree it would be a nice touch, and is the one thing that I'd wish for.
In my case, I've scribbled notes and underlined portions of text.
Despite this, I highly recommend this book. I find it one of the better beginner-intermediate selections in this field. It doesn't take up too much valuable space, but lists a number of objects both common and overlooked. I keep it with my charts, and it's one of a very select group of objects I keep with my telescope.
Essential reference work for the amateur astronomer.......2004-04-07
This work by Phil Harrington should be in the reference library of any amateur astronomer. Although it has been to some extent superseded by the author's "Star Watch" , information is provided on a more exhaustive listing of objects.
The general impression one receives upon cracking the cover of this book , is of library quality rather than a "field book" , since the paper stock is of high quality gloss finish. I would use this book indoors to plan my observing sessions and use either photocopies of the star charts appended at the end of the book , or a field type star chart for outdoor use.
More classes of objects are covered in this volume than in "Star Watch" : galaxies , asterisms , star clusters , multiple stars , and quasars are all represented. Rather extensive verbal descriptions are included with directions for finding approximately 300 celestial objects , along with very interesting descriptions and explanations of them. The only criticism I have is that a few of the Messier objects are not included.
In a direct comparison with "Star Watch" , I find this volume to be more difficult to use. For a beginning astronomer , I would recommend this book as a follow-up project once the skies are familiar. "Star Watch" is a bit more user friendly for beginners. I still rate this work 5 stars and recommend it. The author has an excellent approach to finding and explaining celestial wonders.
A Valuable Reference for Beginning Amateur Astronomers.......2002-06-21
The well written content of this book aids the reader in star-hopping to find about 300 of the finest deep sky objects down to 60S declination, using excellent text, photos and sketches to describe their appearance.
The first five chapters contain excellent instructive material, followed by the seasonally ordered descriptive material. The reference material in the back includes useful listings of data on the objects described in the book, the constellations, the Messier Objects, an excellent Bibliography and useful addresses listing many web sites in both cases, in addition to a Star Atlas.
The unusual atlas included at the back is appropriate for the magnitudes of the objects described in the book. Unfortunately the author failed to include a crucial bit of information for each description by omitting a page reference for the location of the objects in the Atlas. Perhaps this will be corrected in a future edition of a book which will certainly merit further printings.
Despite this annoying defect, this is a good buy and a valuable tool for a beginning star observer. Although some of the objects described can be seen with good binoculars and a few with the naked eye, you will need at least a 100mm telescope or better to see many of them.
