Old Dominion's built environment has grown and changed extensively since its beginnings and the Buildings of Virginia reflects those changes. What you get here is the architecture of Virginia and the expertise (and lovely writing style) of Richard Guy Wilson. Really, what else could you ask for? As far as architectural guides to historic structures go, this is about as good as they get. A truly outstanding ensemble of historic structures skillfully analyzed by THE authority in this particular field. I only wish he'd gone further west. Winchester! Lexington! Roanoke and Lynchburg! And of course, little Fincastle. There's so much left to be done!
Three cheers for the comprehensive survey of Richmond, a gem of historic architecture.

An excellent reference book for the beginner and beyond.......2006-08-01
I figure that there are three books in the 'How To Draw Manga' (HTDM) series that can really help someone starting out: HTDM Volume 10 (Getting Started), More HTDM Volume 1 (The Basics of Character Drawing), and this volume. While the first two books mentioned focus on teaching the reader how to draw and ink characters, Super Basics crams a much broader range of topics into a larger book.
Super Basics is broken up into six chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of manga drawing. Chaper One has twenty pages focussing on materials: pens and nibs, stencils and tools, and the drawing process. Chapter Two looks at how a manga of various lengths might be structured, incorporating the plot, it's development and resolution. Chapter Three offers a brief (twenty-five page) look at drawing the human figure and animals. Chapter Four is manga techniques: hatching, speed lines, dots and effects. Chapter Five covers outdoor environments such as gardens, trees, weather, props and perspective. Finally Chapter six is a brief discussion on correctly composing manga panels and pages.
I found that the ninety pages that comprise chapters four and five were well worth the price of the book. There is such a breadth of information covered, particularly in hatching, gardens, weather and props such as vehicles and everyday items. Be mindful that this book is more for reference than for teaching; some level of ability - even if it's only a basic level - is assumed.
HTDM: Super Basics will be an invaluable reference book for the beginner, and will likely remain so for quite sometime.

This is an EXCELLENT book; it helped me a lot.Unfortunatley, I am not very good at drawing manga! :( Oh well, I'll get that right soon :)

Get The Picture You Want (Essential Digital Photography Techniques) was written for photographers who want to get more out of their digital camera and take better photographs. The audience level is for the beginning photographer. Note: The back of the book states that the audience level is also for Intermediate photographers. Intermediate digital photographers should already be familiar with most or perhaps even all of the topics/content covered in this book.
The full color pages contains clear photographs and screen captures with subtitles and descriptions. Visually the book is well written and easy to read. The book flows smoothly from one topic to the next and is a fast read (about 3 hours).
The book is divided into 11 chapters over four main parts.
Part 1 covers: Digital Photography and Camera Basics, Camera Accessories and Add-ons, Camera Care. This section is best suited for people who have not bought a digital camera yet. After reading this part you will have the necessary knowledge to buy the digital camera (and accessories) that is best for your needs and desires. Intermediate digital photographers may want to consider just scanning or skipping this section.
Part 2 covers: Shooting Techniques (People, Portraits, Pets), Speciality and Outdoor Shots, Improving Image Quality While Shooting, Technical Information. It is this section that greatly increases the value of the book. Just about every area of taking digital pictures in different settings and situations is covered (although perhaps somewhat briefly). After reading this part you will take better pictures by applying the shooting tips and techniques covered.
Part 3 covers: Storage and Output Options (Organizing and Archiving Your Images, Output Options), This part is a good summary of what to do with your digital photos/files after shooting. The section on prepping images for the web (Ebay) was
useful.
Part 4 covers: Turning Your Digital Images Into Tangible Pictures (Image Preparation, Paper Options, Printers, and Printing Methods). This part describes the various methods and possibilties of making hard copy prints that are best for your needs.
Summary: This book is best for the beginning photographer who is looking for a good description of the digital photography/camera workflow. Intermediate photographers who have been shooting only with film up to now and are
considering changing to digital photography will find this book beneficial as well. The book does a good job of comparing/contrasting film versus digital shooting techniques. Overall I recommend this book for the target audience just described and with an online discount price makes it a good value.
Basic, Basic, Basic........2005-06-28
If you know nothing or very little about photography, you might want to look through this. However, if you have used a camera to take more than pictures of your pets and kids, look elsewhere. This book is only for the very beginners. I have been exploring photography for about 3 years now, and I saw nothing in this book that I didn't already know.
Not what I expected.......2004-11-19
I'm a long-time digital camera user who is taking the hobby more seriously now. I was expecting (and hoping!) for different techniques for shooting digital photographs in various situations. What I got was a book that gives me "advice" like keep an extra set of charged batteries on hand, carry extra memory cards, use a tripod, etc. All valid, worthwhile advise but not the kind I was expecting from this book.
If you're new to digital cameras this might be the book for you. However, if you're trying to learn how to take better pictures with your digital camera I'd suggest something else.

Dissatisfied with the explanations of the business cycle provided by the Keynesian, monetarist, New Keynesian, and real business cycle schools, Edmund Phelps has developed from various existing strands-some modern and some classical--a radically different theory to account for the long periods of unemployment that have dogged the economies of the United States and Western Europe since the early 1970s. Phelps sees secular shifts and long swings of the unemployment rate as structural in nature. That is, they are typically the result of movements in the natural rate of unemployment (to which the equilibrium path is always tending) rather than of long-persisting deviations around a natural rate itself impervious to changing structure. What has been lacking is a "structuralist" theory of how the natural rate is disturbed by real demand and supply shocks, foreign and domestic, and the adjustments they set in motion.
To study the determination of the natural rate path, Phelps constructs three stylized general equilibrium models, each one built around a distinct kind of asset in which firms invest and which is important for the hiring decision. An element of these models is the modern economics of the labor market whereby firms, in seeking to dampen their employees' propensities to quit and shirk, drive wages above market-clearing levels-the phenomenon of the "incentive wage"--and so generate involuntary unemployment in labor-market equilibrium. Another element is the capital market, where interest rates are disturbed by demand and supply shocks such as shifts in profitability, thrift, productivity, and the rate of technical progress and population increase. A general-equilibrium analysis shows how various real shocks, operating through interest rates upon the demand for employees and through the propensity to quit and shirk upon the incentive wage, act upon the natural rate (and thus equilibrium path).
In an econometric and historical section, the new theory of economic activity is submitted to certain empirical tests against global postwar data. In the final section the author draws from the theory some suggestions for government policy measures that would best serve to combat structural slumps.

Peter Drucker has hit the nail on the head. This is strategic planning at its best, particularly for nonprofit organizations. The process is simple and concise, based on Drucker's 5 basic questions. I am struck by its simplicity and by the depth of its value. Seeking to change the old paradigms of a beloved, yet antiquated traditional organization, while at the same time fostering the public support of long-time stakeholders, is daunting. This book gives a needed insight into 1862 Conflict.......1998-08-24
Sarah Wakefield, being an educated doctor's wife in 1862, had a lot more than many of the people who lived through the 1862 Uprising/Conflict, she was able to relate in a logical way what happened to her, without anger. She tells of the way she and her children were taken care of by Chaska and his family. How their lives were spared because of the Dakota family. Her words show another side of the story, how whites were saved by the Dakota. When many were saying they had been abused, Sarah told of care. When Chaska was hanged on 26th December she was understandably distressed, here was her saviour, who she had promised would be spared as she was, dead, through a quirk of fate. In 1997, I and another woman working on a Native American Committee to honor the dead of the conflict in Minnesota wrote to President Clinton asking for a pardon for Chaska, on Sarah Wakefield's behalf. Chaska's name should be cleared. It has been 136 years and he is still known as a man who abused women and children during a six week war. Read this story and if you feel the same way, please write to the President as well. Chaska saved Sarah's life, his name should at least be cleared of wrongdoing.Thank you.

I think this is probably the most usefull book for any ornithologist interested in banning birds. There are also invaluable informations to game warden on traps which might be used by poachers. It covers all trapping methods which are used to catch birds alive.
