This collaboration between two distinguished architects and former colleagues is a joyous celebration of admired places and a thoughtful consideration of the role that design has played in giving these places their memorable qualities. It is also an invitation to readers to inhabit the chambers of the book with their own imaginations to join in the making of the Memory Palace proposed. The authors' informal, witty, and anecdotal style extends to the illustrations - the freehand travel sketches, line drawings, and watercolors of places they have remembered and enjoyed.
Chambers for a Memory Palace consists of an exchange of letters in which one author recalls and the other responds to the elements considered essential to the art of successful place-making. Each of the book's chapters forms a chamber, and each chamber is inscribed with personal observations on the composition of places and the architectural elements central to each building, garden, court, monument, or open space described. The examples considered in these dialogues range from classic Western tradition to Asian temples and Islamic tombs, from ancient ruins to modern cities. In "Axes that Reach/Paths that Wander," Lyndon and Moore discuss the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, the Taj Mahal in Agra, Vaux le Vicomte in France, the Beverly Hills Civic Center, and the Kimbell Museum in Forth Worth. In "Orchards that Measure/Pilasters that Temper," they consider the rhythmic spacing of elements in the Mosque at Cordoba, the Cathedral at Bourges, the thousand-pillared mandapas of South Indian temples, the facades of Schauspielhaus in Berlin, and the Seagram building in New York City. They use these and many other examples to illustrate the ways in which architecture, experience, and memory intertwine to help us experience events and places.

An interesting format for a discussion of design principles with beautiful pen and ink sketches. Imaginary letters written between two architects discussing well known and not so well known buildings that illustrate proportion, paths, angles and why they appeal to our eyes and hearts. Recommended by a designer whose course I took. A very pleasing book.

For the way this book is advertised, I did not feel like it accomplished what it sets out to do. Nevertheless if you are an amateur buff of architecture like me this is a good book to add to your home library collection.

Easily the best book on architecture, and mere observation, that I have ever read. Great even for those with little or no knowledge of the field.

The late Ambassador Henry Serrano Villard (1900-1996), a statesman, philanthropist, and scholar, is considered to have been one of the world's leading authorities on early aviation. The book is based largely on Mr. Villard's never-before-published personal accounts from attending worldly early aviation events. Through his eloquent, graceful writing, he leaves a legacy of love and understanding of man and flight.
Ambassador Villard was an accomplished writer receiving acclaim for several of his books including "Contact: The Story of Early Birds" and "Hemingway in Love and War." Mr. Allen is past president of the International Aerospace Hall of Fame.

On September 15, 1944, General William Rupertus and the 16,000 Marines of the U.S. 1st Marine Division moved confidently toward Peleliu, an obscure speck of coral island 500 miles east of the Philippines. Though he knew a tough fight awaited him, Rupertus anticipated a quick two-day crush to victory, strengthening Gen. Douglas MacArthur's flank in his drive on the Philippines. Instead, as The Devil's Anvil reveals, American forces struggled desperately for more than two months against 10,000 deeply entrenched Japanese soldiers who had spent six months preparing for the battle. By the time the weary Americans could claim a victory, the fight had become one of the war's most costly successes. Even more tragic, Peleliu was later deemed a more or less unnecessary seizure. For those who survived, Peleliu remains a bitter, emotionally exhausting chapter of their lives. In The Devil's Anvil, Hallas reports on the personal combat experience of scores of officers and enlisted men who were at Peleliu. A good book, but a bit of a hard slog toward the end.......2003-11-22
Historians are the captives of history. Sometimes history creates a story far more interesting than fiction. Other times they must stick to a story that begins well but ends badly. So is it with this book. Roughly the first half concerns the planning and the first twenty-four hours of the battle. The vast majority of the rest of the book concerns the first week of the battle. The last six weeks or month of the battle is handled in a very few pages.
The reason is obvious. The initial assault with the Marines hitting the beach from their LVTs in the face of unexpectedly tough resistance is pure drama. The last weeks of digging out dug in Japanese simply lacks the drama of fire and movement associated with the initial assault. The eventual victory, such as it is, lacks the climax and emotional release a fiction writer would have included. The result is that the book is something like the battle itself. It starts with a roar, develops into a hard slog, and ends with a whimper.
The maps could be both more numerous and better, too.
Overall, a good, gritty, war story.

The time? Fall 1944. The place? The island of Peleliu, an obscure speck of coral 500 miles east of the Philippines. General William Rupertus's US 1st Marine Division found themselves pitted against the vaunted, often overly hailed, but numerically superior deeply entrenched Japanese soldiers who had spent six months preparing for the battle. Most envisioned a quick two-day battle, however, as James H. Hallas's The Devils Anvil: The Assault on Peleliu reveals, before the "Americans could claim a victory, the fight had become one of the war's most costly successes." Even more tragic, as Hallas admits, was that Peleliu, in the end, was ultimately deemed "an unnecessary seizure." Pulled off of Cape Gloucester in April 1944, the 1st Marine Division had expected to return to Australia. Much to their dismay, they ended up on Pavuvu, the largest of the Russell Islands some 60 miles northwest of their old battlefields on Guadalcanal. While Pavuvu was clearly an inhabitable place, the island the division was slated to take was nothing more than a tiny atoll where the continual rain turning the whole island into what a Marine later described as a "deep stinking mush." The name of this island was Peleliu. The logic behind seizing Peleliu was that General MacArthur felt that the island posed serious threat to the Allied approach on the Philippines. They also predicted that it could be seized in less than two days. They were mistaken on both counts. Hallas's book clearly shows that the 1,500 Americans who lost their lives in the 68 day struggle for the 6,400 acre island, did so for naught. The island was, in the end, of "dubious value." The Allies were moving quickly in the South Pacific and by the time the island of Peleliu was seized, to "became a backwater almost before it was invaded." For those who survived the battle, Peleliu "remains a bitter, emotionally exhausting chapter of their lives. The Devil's Anvil brings the reader to the forefront of the human struggle that is indicative of not only war, but of a battle that was forgotten even before it was printed in the annals of history. From the eyes of famous men like Colonel Lewis Puller down to the lowest private, Hallas has offered military buffs and serious academicians alike an opportunity to experience what it was like to be a US Marine in the South Pacific. This book is an essential part to any World War II library.
Good research. A couple places could be improved!.......1998-11-20
I've tried to find the author's mailing or e-mail address, but haven't found it yet.I was in the 1st MarDiv and was on Peleliu so I can think of a few things that would add a lot to the book. However it was a GREAT job for someone who wasn't there!!For non-Marines I would have put an organizational chart at the beginning of the book, just to show the makeup of a Marine Div. The abbreviations were very confusing with no chart.All of the maps could have been full page with more details, and I'msure it would be much better to show a group of maps with the progress of the front lines for every few days.Otherwise it is too unclear!It would be fabulous if Mr. Hallas would use his expert research talents to locate the addresses and E-mails of all the surviving Peleliu marines, and contact them to inquire if they would approve of their name being printed in a neat Book.Most of them who say YES would surely purchase the book.Somewhat more tedious would be to make such a book about every Marine in the 1st Mar. Div. who is still "available."(Or it could be done one Regiment at a time.) What a great service this would be.Thank you.

This battle that was supposed to last two days,
instead lasted two months, killing 1500 Americans
and some 10,000 Japanese, all of it probably
unnecessary. Admiral Nimitz, against Halsey's
advice and with poor intelligence about Japanese
defenses, refused to scrub the attack even though
it was apparent that the Palaus could be safely
bypassed and left to starve.
Hallas bases his excellent history of the struggle
for that miserable piece of real estate on interviews
of survivors as well as the usual written sources,
and includes the expected photos, maps, bibliography,
and index. Highly recommended, as are Hallas'
other books, on Okinawa and St. Mihiel.

Very useful.......2006-03-22
This is a great little book. Frank Beebe packs all the essential information around hawk training into this book, drawing on decades of practical experience and research. Beebe writes with the authority of someone who has actually practised what he is preaching, rather than some authors who seem to have written a falconry book for the sake of personal aggrandizement. He also writes in excellent English, almost with an academic eloquence.
He deals with all three classes of falconry birds: buteos, accipiters and falcons, and draws very useful comparisons between them on temperament, character and hunting application.
Note however that the book is mostly a training manual, and with the exception of a very interesting chapter on the history of falconry regulation in the US, it about trapping, furniture and hunting. If you want a book with detail on hawk care, dog training, breeding and housing then choose another one (I recommend Emma Ford's for all except breeding and dogs, Nick Fox's for the former and Diana Durman-Walters' for the latter). Note also that its a North American text - the chapters on trapping and bagged quarry are of no use to a UK falconer.
SOARS!.......2005-03-26
This is an excellent book for people who are intrested in falconry. At one time falconry was the sport of the noble gentry. This book does a real service in describing these intelligent, beautiful birds of prey and how falconers work with them.
A must have for prospective falconers.
A great beginners book........2004-12-12
I am relatively new to the world of falconry. As a result, I am reading just about everything I get my hands on. Frank Beebe is an undisputed master on the subject of falconry. I found that Mr. Beebe's style of writing, presents the information in a very easy to read & understand format. After having read this book, it convinced me that I should order his major work entitled "A Compleat Falconer". I am certain that it is most probably "The Bible" for falconry. An excellent book by an excellent author.
Excellent for Beginners.......2004-08-18
This book has very good information for beginners who are a little confused. A very good profiling on individual species. Also good section on equipment. I found it very informative and worthwhile the price.
Excellent Overview.......2002-02-12
I found this book to be an excellent overview of Falcony. It has a good section describing the different types of raptors suitable for the sport, and some interesting descriptions and drawings relating to training and equipment. However, I would not attempt to use this book as a "how-to" manual. It doesn't have nearly enough detail on any subject. In places it can be a little difficult to follow. I am pleased with my copy and will be happy to add it to my library.
