Be sure it is the instructional guide not the students guide. The students guide is just an answer key, a companionto the instructional guide, with no information.

Great for beginners.......2000-11-02

This is a great book for beginners as Ning Yeh shows how to paint several popular subjects step by step. Subjects include bamboo, orchid, camellia and panda. I especially like the sections on painting leaves and camellia, as the techniques can be applied to many different floral subjects.

Ning's painting style is fairly distinctive and is not as loose and spontaneous as some painters, but is really lovely. Nevertheless, his approach helps to show beginners how they can use the brush to construct the different strokes comprising the subjects. He also shows examples of common mistakes for the strokes, which helps you to learn quicker. I teach Chinese brush painting to beginners and have found this book to be a great reference and I also recommend it to my students.

He also includes a section on how to wet-mount a painting (applying the rice paper to a heavier backing to remove wrinkles and make it less susceptible to tearing). I have found this information to be invaluable and not readily-found elsewhere.

I really rely on the reviews to make decisions on purchasing a book, so I thought I would return the favor and write one myself. This book is amazing, and definatley a 5 star! It is loaded with wonderful tips, and technique. Easy to understand text and illustrations on wave anatomy, light, shadows, atmosphere, foam and spray, color, composition, values, and much more. E. John is very talented and there are pictures of his finished paintings to show. Do Not be fooled by the title, I mainly paint landscapes but also love seascapes and I have learned alot of things that I can apply to my landscapes like how to really make the sun Glow!, painting rocks under transparent water, and underpainting. Great Tips you can use on any subject. Do yourself a favor, Do Not pass this book up!!

This book is like a box of wonder. Ever page has a gem to learn, it doesnt treat its audience like children and so communicates the wonder and the energy of the oceons. Its treatment of painting is clear and concentrates on the expression of the water waves surf and foam instead of giving a boring forumla.

In Andean society, as in many other areas of the world, irrigation water carries broad cultural significance and has long been a source of conflict. Nowhere is the struggle over irrigation and over the cultural meanings of water more apparent than in Cabanaconde, a large peasant community located in the arid highlands of southern Peru. Using historical materials and richly detailed ethnographic reporting, Paul H. Gelles shows that water, ethnicity, and power in Cabanaconde, as elsewhere in the Andes, must be understood against the backdrop of the region's colonial past and contemporary nation-builing in Peru. Sifting through the layers of meaning found in the local, ritualized model of irrigation and the secular, monetary model put forth by the Peruvian state, Gelles shows that these models embody fundamentally different cultural rationales concerning natural resources, power, equity, and efficiency. Local models of irrigation, which previously served indigenous and Iberian states, have now become powerful tools of resistance against interference by local elites and the national government.

Very Helpful Guide.......2003-04-23

This book has provided me with important information as a consumer of medical services, and has provided my mother peace of mind as someone who has been undergoing a number of medical tests. The book clearly defines various procedures, patient preparation, and often includes comments about tests that patients are seldom told but ought to know. This book has been so helpful. I am a layperson with no medical knowledge. But to be able to describe a test to my mother in advance of the procedure, to let her know when it is non-invasive versus invasive, to know what kinds of physical symptoms or complications may follow a test...this has been invaluable information. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who has to undergo, or has someone close to them who will undergo, medical tests. The price is [reasonable] given how much useful and potentially lifesaving information it contains.

From Abdominal Tap to the Zung Depression Scale, this book covers over 1,000 of the most commonly prescribed medical tests, explaining each in understandable narrative, with further information on patient preparation, type of specimen needed, procedure (what is done to the specimen), reference range and abnormal values (with explanations), estimated cost (which varies widely), and other useful details including precautions and risks. The informative Introduction is a brief essay on medical testing in general and this book in particular, and an extensive Glossary, symbols and abbreviations section, and good index are provided as well.
The authors are to be congratulated on this fine handbook, which will be of use not only to patients and families, but also to clinics, nursing stations, medical records offices, and emergency rooms as well.

I wanted to give this book ZERO stars, but there is no such rating.

Want to know what to expect BEFORE you go to the doctor to have a test done? This book will tell you in nauseating detail, over, and over again. It wastes page upon page repeating, word for word, what they do during a blood test.

If you want the OLD names for tests, this book uses them all. If you want to understand the results of your blood tests or any other tests, find another book.

If you want to know what those abbreviations mean in your test results, don't look here, they aren't there.

This book has NO information worth reading at all. I wasted my money and time buying and reading it.

The Young Lions: Confederate Cadets at War is the story of the Southern cadets at four major military colleges during the Civil War—the Georgia Military Institute, the South Carolina Military Academy (Columbia's Arsenal campus and the Citadel in Charleston), the University of Alabama, and the Virginia Military Institute. It is also the story of the Confederate government's lack of a cohesive policy toward military colleges and its failure to adequately support the institutions that fostered its officer corps.

This study is the first thorough examination of the interrelationships and common challenges of the South's major military colleges, giving a detailed history of these Southern institutions. James Lee Conrad discusses the cadets' day-to-day lives as well as the academic and military systems of the schools.

From the opening of the Virginia Military Institute in 1839 through the struggles of all the schools to remain open during the war, the death of Stonewall Jackson, and the Pyrrhic victory of the Battle of New Market to the burning of the University of Alabama, Conrad reveals the everyday heroism of cadets both on and off the battlefield.

The grinding of the seed corn.......2006-01-02

For readers in search of tales of combat and action, James Lee Conrad's "The Young Lions" gets off to a slow start. But for readers interested in the South's military colleges and the special challenges they faced during the War Between the States, there's more than enough here to meet that need.

Conrad traces the history of four schools: the Virginia Military Institute; the Arsenal and Citadel Schools in Charleston (Conrad covers them as one institution, which they later became); the Georgia Military Institute; and the University of Alabama, which was founded as a civilian institution but adopted a VMI-style military system in 1860. In the early years of the War, as Conrad describes, these schools saw little military action. Their major focus was on survival: many cadets wanted to leave and join the fighting immediately; many military leaders saw the cadets more or less as shirkers, going to school instead of going to the front; and food, supplies, and academic materials were hard to come by. Although the schools were much reduced in size, all retained at least some cadets and were able to maintain at least some level of academic integrity.

It's during this period that the cadets at all four schools rendered what Conrad sees as their most important -- if not their most glamorous -- service to the Confederacy. As well-drilled military students themselves, cadets were excellently equipped to instruct new recruits in the manual of arms and other basics of military service. Conrad estimates thousands upon thousands of Confederate fighting men had their transition from civilian to military life directed by "young lions" from the South's military academies.

As the war progressed, however, and Federal armies moved farther south, the time came for all four schools to take to the field. VMI's participation in the battle of New Market is the most significant example of this, of course, and Conrad does this battle justice. But cadets at all the schools saw combat to some degree. As the author summarizes, "Cadets fired the first shots of the war at the 'Star of the West' and some of the last at a band of Federal raiders in South Carolina. In between, their service indicated that they were among the best state troops fielded during the conflict" (p. 158).

Readers interested in military education, the history of these particular schools, or an interesting corner of Civil War history should all find James Lee Conrad's interesting book a worthwhile addition to your shelves.

Excellent book. Conrad did his homework before putting pen to paper in writing this book. His knowledge of the subject, and his passion for telling the story of the confederate cadets at war, comes through loud and clear.

A marvelous, if brief look at four military institutions in the South before and during the War for Southern Independence. At times bittersweet, Conrad does an excellent job of telling this tale. This book is nicely laid out and clear, offering tips for attracting, feeding, watering and identifying the birds visiting your backyard, as well as instructions for building bird houses, feeders, and so on. I put several of the ideas to use immediately! If you are an amateur backyard birder, this is the book for you!!

I am a beginner backyard bird watcher and I really enjoyed this book. It has some great pictures to help you identify birds, or even just to look at. The book doesn't stop there, however, it gives you nice detailed information of bird behavior, sounds, nests and habitat. I recommend this book to beginner or intermediate bird watchers.

This book is a really nice reference book for the backyard birdfeeder. It's not just a bird identifier book, it has chapters on bird survival and behavior. I'm glad to have it my small bird library and refer to it often.

Photos are exquisite in detail despite the size of some color plates. This book also contains plans for feeders of various types. Overall, a good addition for any birding enthusiast.
