Collaboration in Context and Practice.......2003-12-07

A decade or so ago the authors of Civic Revolutionaries: Igniting the Passion for Change in America's Communities decided to bring the art of collaboration to the field of economic development. They even called their new firm "Collaborative Economics, Inc." to the amusement of many hard core industrial recruiters. This book is a result of their experience coupled with a sense of history and an idealism that is rare to find in a profession built on the principals of competitiveness.

The numerous examples of collaboration described by the authors go significantly beyond the details of the efforts. They are carefully woven into the Nation's revolutionary history by appropriate quotations and references to the role of collaboration as promoted by the authors of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution as well as other notables in the "American Experience."

In addition, the illustrative examples drawn from the author's extensive and practical field experience working with collaborative efforts in all sections of the Nation over the past ten years are made particularly useful by describing not only results but discussing in detail successful collaborative processes that can be endlessly replicated in a variety of settings as well.

Due credit is given throughout the book to their mentor, John W. Gardner, through carefully selected and placed quotations and references. For example, Gardner is quoted in the introduction as saying "...the crucial task is to design a society (and institutions) capable of continuous change, continuous renewal and continuous responsiveness," a theme that runs throughout the book.

In Grassroots Leaders for a New Economy (1997), the authors of Civic Revolutionaries identified a new type of leadership that has been emerging in regions that have been in the forefront of dealing with the problems and opportunities brought about by the new economy. They called these leaders "civic entrepreneurs." In Civic Revolutionaries: Igniting the Passion for Change in America's Communities, the authors have given us a compelling reason why this leadership model is essential in enabling regions to compete and prosper in the new economy.
By analyzing the complex problems that regions are confronted with today through the lens of the Federalist Papers and the debates between and among our nation's founders, they paint a picture that clearly demonstrates that traditional leadership is no more adequate today than it was in 1776. Excelent Photo book!.......2004-06-21

I bought this book on a trip to the USA, when I was visiting Mount Vernon, because it gave a nice overview of the presidency. I was thinking to buy a book, with just some nice pictures of all the (recent) presidents. But when I came home and started turning the pages, I saw that it had all these remarkable photographs. And as it turned out, they where all from the same photographer: Diana Walker. This must be realy a remarkable person, because she seems to have had access to all of the presidencies to take pictures behind the scene. As it turned out, i bought a realy excelent photo book that also illustrates the pivotal moments of the American presidency.

This photographic essay has something for everyone. It covers 20 years in the White House from a very special point of view. Diana Walker with a camera in hand had access to moments in history that no one else has had. She has captured our Presidents in serious and funny situations and all the moods in between. Her descriptions are well worth reading and make this very special "coffee table" book all the more important in its place in history. I highly recommend buying this book and it makes a great present.

A wonderful analysis.......2006-08-22

Wright Mills is as always an incisive critic. His analysis of "the serious people" brought in to govern, and their supposed expertise is as correct and current today as it was when it was written. His passionate anti-militarism, his disdain of elite men who nevertheless have very little knowledge of the world, and his nuanced approach to the ways in which power is exercised and implemented are all useful, thought-provoking and beautifully written. He tells us how these "serious people" who govern us "know of no solutions to the paradoxes of the Middle East and Europe, the Far East and Africa except the landing of Marines. Being baffled, and also being very tired of being baffled, they have come to believe that there is no way out--except war--which would remove all the bewildering paradoxes of their tedious and now misguided attempts to construct peace. In place of these paradoxes they prefer the bright, clear problems of war--as they used to be. For they still believe that "winning" means something, although they never tell us what." Amazing to imagine this was written nearly 50 years ago!

If your highest value is no war, if that value trumps liberty and all else, you might agree with this book. In it, Mills states as matter of factly that the Russians are out pacing the west in production and technology. His assessment was that the west, more specifically the United States was acting in a way to cause world war three when the USSR wanted nothing but peace. According to Mills the USSR was just reacting to the American aggression. He remarks that if one is to state this fact you are considered unpatriotic. He states that the military build up is because the military industrial complex was benefiting and that our leaders are lazy and ignorant so it keeps going. He questions the morals of the leaders, in the march to war he believes they think they have a good moral code but Mills begs to differ. This book is diatribe against America and a cheerleading squad for dictators. Amazingly similar to those currently protesting the war in Iraq, It was just written four decades ago.
