Even the name, 'spilled ink,' has a Japanese sense of self-deprecation about it. Don't be fooled: this simple and elegant art deserves the most serious respect.

Western marbling uses a thickened medium to support the inks. Suminagashi, instead, relies on the fluidity of water's surface to create its delicate drifting marks. It differs from Western marbling also in that it tends towards a limited palette, often being executed with black ink only. The results, however, go far past the Western style in delicacy and complexity. Suminagashi can fill the paper with marks as vivid and dense as marbled paper's. It can also create airy, open patterns as pale as morning mist, the kind that sit well under calligraphy or drawing.

Best of all, suminagashi is simpler in tools, materials, and process than its Western relative. You can try it yourself with only a shallow pan, ink, and a little detergent. Even kids can get good results within their first few tries, and get enough different results to hold their interest.

The basic simplicity of the craft takes nothing away from the masterworks of the craft's finest artisans. There is infinite subtlety in the play of ink and surface. The samples shown here are breathtaking. The book's value, though is in letting you create images of your own.

Go ahead. It's quite an experience seeing the films of ink forming on the water; it's almost magical to capture them on paper for yourself.

From the Beatles to the Bush family, this book has it all. It will be the best gift under the tree of any Beatles fan, and it also has great pictures of your favorite celebs and politicians. Harry Benson was voted one of the top photographers in the world in a recent photo magazine, and it is easy to see why. I don't know if Benson should be called a photojournalist, an artist, or a celeb. himself--he is all of that and more. Hägar at his boisterous best!.......2002-04-09

This 4"x7" paperback book is a collection of Hägar the Horrible comics by the incomparable Dik Browne (1917-89). Here in this book are many adventures of Hägar, his friend Lucky Eddie, his formidable wife Helga, his beautify though self-conscious daughter Honi, his bookish son Hamlet, and Hägar's less than competent crew. In this book, Hägar must face Bloody Bulgars, knights in armor, magical trolls, and Lucky Eddy's cooking.

Recently, while digging through an old box full of books, I came across several of my treasured Hägar books, of which this is one. My children (girl eleven, boy eight) grabbed it away from me, and were soon happily reading the jokes out loud to all present. It is so nice to see that Hägar can entrance the young of today, much as he did me. My personal favorite is when Hamlet and his friends discuss what they want to be when they grow up. My wife loved it when Helga instructed Honi in "The Ancient Mysteries and Secrets of Womanhood." As for my kids, their favorite was when Hägar's crew proves too incompetent to even leave the pier behind!

We all love this book, and you will too. If you can get it, then do so!

Family, dreams and finding your way -- a home run!.......2005-04-06

I picked up Becoming Joe DiMaggio out of curiosity when researching some young adult literature for a class I was taking, and just fell in love with it. With an economy of words, Maria Testa paints a portrait of a boy, his grandfather, and the iconic baseball player that had a generation cheering. This would be a wonderful basis for classroom discussions/writing assignments on dreams, family, how poetry can evoke emotions with so few words. It can even be used to tie in math (baseball statistics, prompted by the poem "The Streak"), social studies (World War II), and even moral issues (the bombing of Hiroshima, domestic abuse). I recommend this highly for any student or teacher from fourth through 8th grade, and possibly even into high school.

Baseball Legend.......2003-10-21

The book "Becoming Joe DiMaggio" was a a good book overall. It is about Joseph Paul growing up and learns about the game of baseball. He falls in love with the sport and soon learns the rules and how the game is played. He loves his grandfather and would do anything to make him happy and hopes to make it to the majors his dream. This book is a very quick read and somewhat a confusing book. But overall it was entertaining and i would recommend it to anyone from grades 5th and up.

With a spare, beautiful text, Testa creates poignant characters and a passionate story. Every word counts here. "Becoming Joe DiMaggio" is a story for all generations. This book would be a lovely, thoughtful gift for all ages.

Steel Wind is a piece of historical detective work that explains how Colonel Georg Bruchmuller, an obscure German artillery officer recalled from retirement, played a pivotal role in the revolution of offensive tactics that took place in 1917-18. Ironically the methods developed by Bruchmuller ultimately were rejected by the German Army of World War II; but they were taken up and applied with a vengeance by the emerging Red Army. The Soviets further developed Bruchmuller's principles and incorporated them into their doctrine, where they remain to this day. Through Soviet doctrine they have become fundamental to the practice of many other armies. Bruchmuller's influence in shaping the former Soviet Army has also been mirrored in the shape of those armies designed to oppose it.

Good Book - But Requires Critical Reading.......2007-02-13

'Steel Wind' is a highly engaging and informative read which uses many original sources. It reviews artillery techniques and tactics with skill, and in an accessible manner. The one significant problem is that it carries with it the somewhat uncritical assumption that Bruchmuller was the main innovator, and that he was always right. Some almost identical techniques were developed and used by the Allies, and Bruchmuller was criticised on a number of points by his own colleagues. 'Steel Wind' glosses over some of these points of controversy - nevertheless this book is a must for anyone interested in artillery during WW1.

Solid reading in tactics for professional military.......2000-10-01

Having been an instructor at the U.S. Army Field Artillery School and searching for information on artillery tactics and the origin of current doctrine, this book was enlightening and contains information that is very relevant to today's combat arms officer. I highly recommend the book as professional reading material. The book contains many lessons learned that will no doubt have to be relearned once again in time of war. Lt Col Zabecki has done the combat arms officer a favor by taking the time to compile the information for this book then to lay it all out in a comprehensible and enjoyable format. If you are interested in warfighting, you will enjoy this book. All my lieutenants will read this book, answer questions formatted by me, and write a review. Btry R, 5th Bn, 10th Marines.

This book discusses Colonel Bruchmuller of the Imperial German Army and his role in developing modern artillery practices and tactics. By the time you finish this book you'll see how artillery went from guesswork to a deadly science. Highly recommended, whether you are a military buff or a professional soldier.

A outstanding book on the origins of field artillery tactics.......1998-10-30

The author of this excellent work is the former commander of the 2-123 FA. In this book he covers the birth of modern field artillery and its father -- COL Georg Bruchmuller. The author covers not only the history of the evolution of artillery from a direct fire weapon through the universal adoption of MET+VE; but also, the fire support tactics and techniques for employing the weapon. COL Bruchmuller started out the war as a medically retired LTC. He ended up as the de-facto FSCOORD for the German Army. Under his direction the German artillery developed MET+VE, the FDC, and the short, violent, multi-phased preparation. Bruchmuller orchestrated four to six hour preps that accomplished what one and two week preps by the allies couldn't -- breakthroughs. Bruchmuller's tactics and techniques are still in use by most of the world's armies today. The Russian fire support doctrine reads very closely to Bruchmuller's. This book is a quick read and is a must read for all artillerymen

Wonderful Book.......2003-09-24

WOW, this book is fantastic! There are so many beautiful photographs of every bird in the world. There is also very detailed descriptions and various interesting info about each species. Each section is categorized by the Order name. Very well done, and very informational for a zoology major and aspiring ornithologist.
