The history of photography in Mexico was a largely untold story until the 1994 publication of Olivier Debroise's Fuga Mexicana, un recorrido por la fotografía en México. Based on ten years' research in public and private photographic archives in Mexico, the United States, Guatemala, and Europe, Fuga Mexicana provided the first comprehensive survey of Mexican photography from the advent of the daguerreotype in 1839 to the present.

Now this benchmark publication is available in English as Mexican Suite. Olivier Debroise and Stella de Sá Rego have revised this edition to include more current material and explanatory notes for an audience less familiar with Mexican history. They have also eliminated some of the general history of photography and added more of the early history of photography in Mexico, as well as many new, previously unpublished images. The book is organized both chronologically and thematically, which allows viewer/readers to follow the evolution of major photographic genres and styles. Debroise also examines the role of photography in the development of modern Mexico and the influence of prominent foreign photographers such as Edward Weston, Tina Modotti, and Henri Cartier-Bresson. In its totality, Mexican Suite constitutes an extended essay on Mexican culture as a whole and on how this culture has been read, interpreted, and imagined.

This book has received an Honorable Mention from the 2001 Southern Books Competition. "One of the challenges of book design is to thoughtfully create a readable and engaging package for outstanding intellectual content. Jose Orozco Farias has done an exemplary job here and deserves warm praise. Color continuity from jacket through title page to chapter openings is exceptional. The table of contents is clear, simple and easy to use. Chapter openings are beautiful. Images are thoughtfully and effectively arranged. If you got this far, you are probably going to buy this book, since it is the only survey in English of the rich history of photography in Mexico. But in case you have any doubts about spending the 40 odd dollars, put them out of your mind, since it is really a great art book, even if you aren't interested in Mexico or photography! Reads like a series of fascinating "tales"....I'm a very biased reviewer but thought someone had to be the first to review this excellent book.

Timeless tools.......2001-10-19

I came across this book only very recently, but wish I had seen it back when it was first published. This is one of the most visionary treatments of the whole area of IT management written by someone who has been in the trenches. Although some of the technology Chapters are slightly dated for the pure web play, the basic principles and tools are still spot-on and appropriate for IS consultants such as myself. I found the early Chapters - on organization, people, processes and strategic tools very relevant to problems I am asked to solve in assignments, also the ideas of architecture frameworks, event classification, and visualization are timeless.

Finally, I have found a comprehensive discussion of management processes and methodologies with relevance to architects, executives, middle-tier managers and engineers. I found the practical strategies discussed for dealing with such topics as process architecture, outsourcing and people issues to be well balanced and detailed. For a corporate architect/manager still trying to make sense of the new "Enterprise", this book provides an excellent theoretical and practical guide. This book is not necessarily for the .COM Enterprise manager, but will help senior Corporate IT professionals put some sanity back in the current management process. Ms. Hattery, with acknowledged editorial help, provides a readable textbook explaining her study of the decision process mothers utilize in making work force participation and child care decisions. The study discusses the driving importance of the motherhood ideology, a woman's fundamental belief in her role in her child's development, and the interwoven variables of economic need, personal interest, and support systems. Ms Hattery's discussion of historical trends in family structure, previous study results, and her own study's conclusions shed a different light on the ongoing "mommy wars". A thoughtful read for women undergoing personal decision processes, and caretakers who want to further understand their clients needs/rationale.

Hard to find, but worth the search.......2003-03-21

This is one I've been searching for, for several years. If you want a good, one volume work on the role played by the army during the pre-Civil War years, buy this book. One major item that is brought out is that troops on the frontier were used as laborers building roads more than actual military service. The conflicts among the officers as well as the politicians are covered as well. The bibliography is a gold mine of first hand sources

The Inmates Were Running the Asylum.......2006-02-21

In this short, but very informative work, German General, Hans Speidel provides insight into the absolute chaos that permeated the Nazi high command. If ever there was a case of the inmates running the asylum, this was it! Still, dedicated, professional officers, such as the author and his mentor, Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, persevered despite material shortages, and insane directives bearing the Fuehrer's signature. This is their view of the Invasion of Normandy.

Speidel was Rommel's Chief of Staff. He outlines the political and military situations present in 1944 as the Germans braced for the Allied invasion. In short, supplies were low, time was limited and air cover was non-existent. He tells how Rommel did his best to make Hitler see reality. "The Bohemian Corporal," (a.k.a., Hitler) responded by brushing away the Field Marshall's objections. He then attempted to micro-manage the battle from the safety of his bunker in Berlin with predictable results. Alone, frustrated and despairing of watching his troops die needlessly from insane directives, Rommel finally joined the conspirators who sought to overthrow the Nazi regime. Fate intervened to save Hitler's life and incapacitate Rommel before he could put his plan into effect. At last, Rommel, the one man who could have saved Germany from destruction, was himself a victim of Nazi intrigues. He was murdered on Hitler's orders.

This work is a first person account of one of the most significant battles in history. It shows the Nazi hierarchy was an egotistical rabble of military amateurs incapable of leading except through terror. It is also a testament to the ability and moral fiber of the German fighting men and their officers. A great read; 5 stars!!

Reading this factfilled book by Michael Varhola has again turned my thoughts to all the brave young men who came to fight far away from home to free Europe. This book has many interesting facts and figures that I have not seen in other books. The research has been thorough and put down on paper in a way that makes it easy to read. This book should be read by everyone interested or have family who fought in this battle. Highly recommended.

This book provides an excellent by-the-numbers overview of Operation Overlord. Plenty of background on the various aspects of missions, equipment, the terrain, and the troops. There is a startling amount of information packed into this pleasantly easy to read book. I especially enjoy the way hard facts (for example the number of guns on a beach) are interspersed with interesting vignettes (the fascine tank that became part of the bridge). Strongly recommend this book.

An Excellent Historical Reference.......2006-05-31

This book is an excellent historical reference on the often unheralded role of the Navy and the Naval Beach Battalions in the invasion of Normandy. Like many works on the subject of D-Day that have appeared recently, the narrative draws upon interviews with and personal journals written by the D-Day veterans themselves. The stories range from simple statements to highly detailed, gripping tales, and the author does a good job of organizing them, and then staying the hell out of the way. I've personally met and researched many of the veterans who are featured in the book, and I can tell you that the accounts written by these brave and heroic men are absolutely true. While they might not all write like Shakespeare, their stories are very important to the overall history of D-Day, and are worthy of the merit they deserve. They, after all, were there, while the naysayers were not.

Great Book!! However, very special to me because my great uncle is featured in the book. I was a little distraught by the previous reviews doubting the credibility of the author. I can assure you that the accounts are real and the pain it caused some of the veterans to recount the horror of D-Day was very tramatic. I hope that everyone who reads this book appreciates it for its meaning and not as a literary work of art. This book screams appreciation for those that fought and hope that those who haven't never will. Also, the account written by Leo H. Scheer is especially riveting.

Good Intentions, Perhaps...But Poor Execution.......2002-06-20

This slim volume is based on material drawn from oral transcripts and from numerous unpublished manuscripts written by participants in the D-Day landings and subsequent operations in Normandy. The focus is on American naval personnel, from those serving on the capital ships and destroyers to the crews of LSTs and detached squads operating as beach masters or in support roles.

There are probably some fascinating stories to be found about the various naval actions, but the selection of sources is very poor. Often, the contribution from a sailor will be about one paragraph long, saying "I sure was there on D-Day". And there's a lot of repetition in these accounts, centering on the preparations for the invasion, which could have been edited out. And honestly, a lot of the tales are not very gripping in any way.

However, there are some nice illustrations, and there are a lot of photos of various ships, particularly the landing craft. The handsomely designed book at least has some value for its pictorial content. Overall, though, it's a disappointing effort.

Poorly written book........2001-11-12

Seemed like a very badly written account of a very historic event in our nations history. Makes you wonder if the author was really present. Did he really interview credible veterans? Maybe he should try his hand at writing novels.

This beautifully produced book is a superb addition to the library of any backyard astronomer or anyone from eight to eighty. It's a best buy for several reasons.
The first is its outstanding quality. The second is the BEWARE!.
This book is actually a softcover, otherwise identical reprint of "Advanced Skywatching", ISBN: 0783549415, published in 1997, also by Time-Life.
Perhaps Time-Life used this subterfuge to catch unwary on-line shoppers that already own "Advanced Skywatching" (as I do), since you can't view the contents on-line to discover you already own the same book under a different name.

The complaint on the star charts about this book (or its twin) not covering the entire sky is not critical.
There isn't room on anyone's bookshelf for all the possible fun sky-hops, of which this book and its twin present abundant excellent examples. There are more and different, also challenging and instructive ones in another fine volume, "Turn Left at Orion", and many others.

Not to worry if you get sucked in. This one makes a fine gift for your favorite grandchild as mine will.
Add this to your "must have" list if you don't already own its twin. If you do, buy it anyhow and give it to someone special.
The price is astonishingly low for the fine content.

After picking this book up at a Sam's club out of curiosity I found that I couldn't put it down and ended up putting it in the cart. My companion is a begining Astronomy buff and he couldn't get enough eighther. We were reading it to each other and trying to read it at the same time. We have learned alot from this book and have put it to good use with his new telescope. I highly remommed this book to the person who has always wanted to get started in astronomy!
