5 out of 5 stars Voices and Fragments from the Past.......2001-10-14

This is a lovely small book which gives colorful visual images
of our American quilting history. The ladies of the 1800's
left us their stories in diaries and letters. They also left
us their beautiful quilts.

The hardships of life on the American frontier was helped by the
quilting projects that the women used to fill their time.
In 1831, Lydia Marie Child wrote, "The true economy of
housekeeping is simply the art of gathering up all the
fragments, so that nothing be lost. I mean the fragments of
time, as well as materials. Nothing should be thrown away so
long as it is possible to make any use of it, however trifling
that use may be..." This is certainly an idea that is far
removed from today's thinking where we throw away many useable
items.

The quotations that are used throughout the book are poignant
and very interesting. These words from our history are set against the background of pieces of quilts and wonderful photographs of ladies, and the various accoutrements of sewing.

The longing to keep connected to her young married daughter is
reflected in the following letter from a mother. In 1850, Hannah Shaw wrote to her daughter, "I have been looking for something to send to you, but I could not find anthing that I could send in a letter bitt a piece of my new dress..."

This is an easy and charming way to reflect on our American
history.

    Book Description

The ideas, people, and events that developed art education are described and analyzed so that art educators and educators in general will have a better understanding of what has happened (and is happening) to visual art in the schools. Peter Smith raises the issue of art education's inordinate emphasis on Eurocentric art. He challenges the often expressed notion that the field of education is the cause of art education's problems and proposes that confused conceptions within the art world are just as much a root of the difficulty. No other book in art education history gives such close and analytical attention to the careers of women in the field. The materials on Germanic cultural and historical influences are unequaled as is the scholarly treatment of Viktor Lowenfeld, probably the most influential single figure in 20th-century American art education.

This book has won a Southern Books Competition Award of Honorable Mention for Book Design from the Southeastern Library Association. This award is given in recognition of the book's aesthetic appeal and design and for fine craftsmanship in its printing and binding. Congratulations to photographer Philip Gould, author Jason Berry, designer Laura Roubique Gleason, printer Dai Nippon Printing, and the Louisiana State University Press.

5 out of 5 stars An ace of a book.......2000-09-20

Phillip Gould has been an astute and quirky observer of Louisiana life for a couple of decades. Though a transplant he has established serious and widely respected local roots. He speaks Cajun/Creole French; he speaks to the heart. This finely honed selection of portaits echoes every strophe of Louisiana life. His visages map and mirror what Louisiana is and is about. They stand as a testament to a place and its cultures-- a singular place at that, fiercely individual cultures to boot; a world and its folkways that still tenaciously remain undiluted into the general American homogeneity. Gould's reportorial eye is keen and witty, his pictures are trenchant and lambent and are destined to imprint and remain.

5 out of 5 stars Common sense for raising teenagers.......2000-12-11

Dr. Paula Bender's Book teaches parents how to deal with common, and often annoying, teenage problems. "How to Keep Your Teenager from Driving You Crazy" is easy to read and written in everyday language, not professional jargon. Any parent who reads this book will come away with a blueprint for raising a responsible teenager. Parents will learn how to talk to their teen and how to set limits that work. However, Dr. Bender's book doesn't offer a superficial quick fix. Using the strategies she recommends takes time and commitment, but the results are definitely worth the effort. I highly recommend this book.

Emmy E. Werner survived World War II on the ground, as a child living in Germany, with a family split over both sides of the conflict. That war set more than a few gruesome records, but perhaps the most tragic was that, for the first time in modern history, more civilians than soldiers were maimed or killed in the fighting. Thirteen million were children, and another 20 million were left orphaned by the war. As one of the survivors, Werner carries a unique qualification for crafting this moving and well-researched book, a sweeping, reverently assembled collection of children's eyewitness accounts of that traumatic and uncertain time.

Pulling together contrasting experiences from over 200 different children and teens (drawing from diaries, letters, journals, and a handful of adult interviews), Through the Eyes of the Innocents paints an impressively rich and varied picture of the war. Children on every side of the conflict recount images and incidents ranging from the benign to the horrific, whether it was German youngsters in the Ardennes decorating Christmas trees with radar foil or a 12-year-old writing to MacArthur, begging him to let her "get down in the trenches and mow these Germans down 5 by 5." But Werner manages to temper the horror with hope, devoting much attention to postwar recovery and rebuilding (especially the efforts of CARE and UNICEF), and pleading that we remember the words of the "wide-eyed and defenseless" as we confront the violence of today. --Paul Hughes

          Book Description

A riveting portrayal of the horrors World War II inflicted upon boys and girls around the world, drawn from children's journals, diaries, and letters

World War II was the first modern war in which more civilians than soldiers were killed; by August 1945, more than thirty-nine million civilians had died as a direct result of the war, about thirteen million of them were children. In Through the Eyes of Innocents, Emmy Werner tells the story of these children in their own words. Drawing on diaries, letters, and journals kept by children and teenagers caught up in the war, Werner shows the universality of the war experience, regardless of location: the children of Great Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Russia, and the United States are all represented through some 150 eye-witness accounts. Werner focuses on the shared experiences of these children, how they endured, and how they were changed forever by events beyond their control.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing, balanced collection of children's experiences.......2004-05-06

As a German child who experienced the horrors of World War II personally, Dr. Emmy Werner weaves together a lively collection of letters, narratives and interviews that makes for fascinating reading. Werner's book is far reaching in its scope, from British children sent into the country to avoid bombing to Japanese-American childen interred in U.S. camps to German refugee children. She leaves few stones unturned. Through it all, she remains amazingly unbiased and open as she connects these experiences into a cohesive work.

Despite the horrors recounted, such as firebombing, starvation and poverty, there is an equal showing of hope, compassion and bravery. There are heartfelt glimmers of humor amid the painful recollections. It is a testament to Werner's own stamina to survive and become a giving adult herself that this book is as genuinely informative and captivatingly written as it is.

One compelling collection Werner uncovers is a special correspondence between then General Dwight D. Eisenhower and a young girl from Dayton, Ohio. It opens a wonderful window into how an energetic yet hopeful young woman and and a beleaguered commander formed a unique friendship over thousands of miles.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially to high school history teachers whose students are studying World War II.
They will find the personal stories compelling reading.

5 out of 5 stars World War II Through the Eyes of Children.......1999-12-15

Dr. Emmy Werner's lastest book, in her ongoing research into the resilience of children who face adversity, probes the experiences and impressions of children who lived through the terrors of World War II. With even-handedness she quotes Japanese children who survived the world's first atomic bomb, English children who saw and felt London crumble from their air raid shelters in their gardens, German youngsters who watched Dresden burn. Besides showing the devastating effects of wartime violence, however, she also tells tales of English POWs who treat burned German children, or German POWs who are kind to the children of the families where they are housed. Her overriding message is that individuals must--and do--care for others, regardless of national politics, right or wrong. This work, while full of sadness, is a heartwarming affirmation of hope.

            Book Description

Expanding upon existing studies of transculturation, Silvia Spitta shows how Latin American cultures radically transformed, displaced, and subverted Spanish and later European and U.S. cultural impositions. She theorizes transculturation as the complex process of adjustment and re-creation-cultural, literary, linguistic, and personal-that allows for new configurations to emerge from the clash of cultures and colonial and neocolonial appropriations.

Spitta not only introduces the question of gender into the debate, but also brings together previously disconnected media: the chronicles of the New World, the writings of the extirpators of idolatries in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the paintings of the Cuzco School, and contemporary U.S. Latino narratives. Between Two Waters brings English-language readers into the post-colonial debate at the heart of Latin American literary criticism.

                    Book Description

This is the only pocket guide to all the known birds of eastern Africa, an area nearly half the size of the contiguous United States and including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and Yemen's Socotra Island. Drawing on almost two decades of visits to the region, Ber van Perlo offers a concise reference whose 96 color plates and accompanying text describe all 1,487 species birders might see, including some of the most colorful anywhere on earth--from ostriches to albatrosses, boobies and cormorants to vultures, lovebirds, parrots, parakeets, cuckoos, kingfishers, bee-eaters, starlings, waxbills, weavers, and many more.

Each plate illustrates similar species and subspecies while the facing pages feature precise, pithy entries summing up physical traits, behavior, habitat, and voice. Distribution maps show the range and frequency of each species. This is an indispensable guide for all birders, amateur and professional alike, who have given thought to exploring the ornithological wealth of this part of Africa.
