A Must Read For Practitioners.......2003-09-20

The CPTED Strategies introduced and well laid out in this book, establish a foundation for creative target hardening and risk transference.
To suggest as one critic does, that this is "low level" stuff is to miss the point entirely.
As a security consultant, I have applied these concepts to a variety of corporate settings with positive results.
If someone is simply looking for standard "templates" without the capacity to creatively apply the ideals this is not the book.
If you are serious about your work, it is essential.

If you are looking for ways to secure a high level executive's office suite using the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, forget it. The examples in this book are more at the level of bus stops.

The perfect beginners book!.......2004-09-03

Mary Duke Guldan shows you how to get started carving without spending a lot of money. She suggests you begin with an affordable exacto type knife and a simple coping saw. Her patterns are wonderful and she even suggests ways to change and alter them to suit a variety of purposes. I recommend all of her books. Members of my woodcarving class study her books and use her patterns. I particularly like her Carving Animals book. I've just finished carving her cougar and it looks terrific!

This is a wonderful book. It goes from the very beginning of figuring out what camera is right for you to how to light and compose your subject. It also covers everything in between. This book really gives you an inside look at photography while not getting to complex to confuse you. It's not only a great beginners book but it's also for the photo buff in any family. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to take pictures and the people who want to get even better at it.

Help Has Arrived.......2001-08-08

Picture-Taking for Moms and Dads is a life saver. Ron Nichols has packed more practical, useful tips in this volume than seem possible. His comments on lighting alone are worth the price. Also, his advice to "consider it playtime," is the missing ingredient in most family photography. This is a wonderful book, and has already changed me from a semi-competent picture snapper into a fledgling photographer. Well written, with great advice. Highly recommended.

Proud photos for proud parents.......2001-08-02

Ron Nichols' book is a must for novice photographers who want to take photos of their children that will last a lifetime. His experience as a professional photographer and as a proud parent shows through in this well-illustrated book. The variety in topics to cover all the basics of a good picture is well thought out. His focus on getting photos that are composed and lighted to bring out the best in the character of your children make it a great reference book. I believe anyone, no matter what their knowledge level in photography (especially if they are a complete novice) can pick this book up and in no time at all be taking photos that are a 100 percent improvement over their current photos. Having taken photos and coached novices who want better photos myself, I have to say I am impressed with the both the material and the presentation in this book.

Living Rag Dolls!.......2003-02-08

An over looked but great comic. Marionette Generation isn't the best comic out there but it's a nice read. Created and illustrated by the character designer of Robotech , Marionette is the story of illustrator Izumi, junior high students, and the living rag doll Lunch. Yes, Lunch is alive and she's a rag doll. There's an explanation to this oddness, I promise. This comic is featured in Animerica Extra but with about four pages an issues you don't really get a good impression or understanding of anything. A graphic novel view would be better. The artwork in this manga is gorgeous and the story is fun. Marionette Generation isn't for everyone but it's enough for some of us.

Guy and Doll.......2003-02-03

Izumi Morino is an out of work illustrator with a limited creative palette. One morning, his assistant Kinoko arrives at his home/studio to find him in bed with a doll. As if that wasn't strange enough, the doll walks and talks like a person. Morino doesn't know where she came from, and neither of them is sure what to do with her. This doll, which he names Lunch, has no memory of her past.

Most of the story focuses on Izumi's and Kinoko's relationship: she's got a crush on him, but she's too young for him to pursue (legally, at least.) The mystery of the dolls -- as we discover there is more than one -- almost seems relegated to the background. To be honest, I didn't really mind, as I found the human characters and issues more interesting anyway. It just feels unbalanced.

Mikimoto is an excellent artist and he has a great sense of humor, but his storytelling skills leave something to be desired. There were many sequences I found somewhat confusing. It's not a major problem, but it is somewhat distracting.

Hmmm...........2002-08-07

I decided to pick up Marionette Generation because the artwork was good and the title was interesting- I'm a fan of anime/manga with lifelike marionettes. I admit, this is one of the first manga I have purchased without already knowing a little about it. I sat down to read it and within a few chapters, I was pretty confused. This book is definitely not for the weak of mind! It wasn't *awful* but it was definitely not a series I would continue purchasing. Out of the people I shared this with (all avid anime fans) they too were confused and not excited for another installment. The art is nice, and the characters are cute, but the plot...eh.

I'm a big fan of humorous manga, so after reading the first ten pages or so I decided to buy it. I have to say that I'm disappointed. Marionette Generations is a great graphic novel. The art is crisp and pleasing to the eye, and the humor is top-notch. The author, Haruhiko Mikimoto, does a great job of drawing the reader into the book, while breaking down the "fourth wall" between the characters and readers. His dialogue is very good, if not first class, and he gets a lot of laughs from poking fun at himself. For example, we are led to believe that Izumi, the protaganist who has a hentai collection, has an obsession with a J-Pop diva, and sleeps with rag dolls, is based on the author.

The downside to this book is in its plot. Don't get me wrong, it's very creative and has a lot of potential, but it's very convulated and difficult to understand. Often, I had to read sections of the book three or four times to understand it. Aside from this one quibble, however, I would recommend Marionette Generation whole-heartedly to any manga fan looking for some laughs.

A good book that slightly undershoots the mark.......2001-01-02

Hogg's "Tank Killing" is an enjoyable book that attempts to cover all aspects of anti-tank warfare - one man anti-tank weapons, tank destroyers, tanks, anti-tank guns, aircraft weapons, and smart weapons. This is a tall order for any book and 265 small (8.5" x 5.5") pages just didn't provide Hogg with enough space to accomplish his mission. What he does do is provide a good subject overview, emphasizing selected topics at key points in their development. Thus, the development of tank gunnery during WWII is covered in detail while tank armament in the 50's and beyond is only lightly addressed. In a similar manner, the anti-tank missile chapter focuses on the 40's - 60's rather than the more recent years.

It's difficult to rate a book that doesn't quite live up to expectations but still is highly enjoyable and informative. Mr. Hogg has a dry wit and calls things as he sees them with respect to British, American, and Soviet military doctrine and development. In the areas he covers in detail, he leaves only minor stones unturned. When I looked at his coverage of Soviet WWII weapons, the types of items that he didn't cover were the SU-57 and the 45mm PTP 42 (he covered the earlier model). I didn't consider these significant oversights. But, if you want to know any details of the 20 pounder on the Centurian, you are out of luck. And if you are Italian (or French or Japanese or almost any country except England, the USSR, or America), you might be more upset about some of the necessary tradeoffs made in the interest of space. For technical content, this book deserves 2.5 stars. I gave it a 3 because of Hogg's presentation style. I wish the book were about twice the size and covered all countries and weapons but one can't always get what one wishes for.
