Jeff Ferrel's participant observations of local taggers and writers gives a fascinating insight into a sometimes beautiful and sometimes offensive subculture of vandalism....or is it? The question of vandalism or art remains an underlying question throughout Ferrel's book. And the reader must decide for himself where the line between art and crime stands. Jeff Ferrel's work is divine inspiration to the fledgling sociologists like myself.

Flipping through your introductory text, you discover that it's not made up of countless variations of curves intersecting. Prose that celebrates perfectly competitive though non-existent markets seems to be in short supply. Economic heresies - "other goals may sometimes outweigh the goal of maximizing production" and "wealth itself is not well-being" - are committed left and right. After 18 years, the economics department has finally switched textbooks.

While this new text still has supply and demand curves, there are also discussions about global warming and biodiversity loss. The authors draw on insights from psychology. They raise questions about overconsumption in rich countries. And they expose the mainstream circular flow model - the one that endlessly creates products without material or energy inputs, and without generating waste - as a fraudulent perpetual motion machine. You are, to say the least, a bit taken aback.

Welcome to Microeconomics in Context, by Neva Goodwin and three of her colleagues, a team that has expertise in mainstream, feminist, institutional and ecological economics. Their text dives right into poverty, inequality, unemployment, the gains and costs involved in trade, the linkages between economic activity and the environment. To the trio of activities that are normally the focus of economic analysis - production, distribution and consumption - the authors add resource maintenance. It's a massive leap forward for economists to methodically look at what is needed in order to tend to, improve or preserve the natural and social resources that support economic activity and quality of life.

Homo economicus still makes appearances in Goodwin's book, but mainly to help students converse in the language of neoclassical economists. Instead, the authors focus on how society can shape the economy to enable people to live healthy, meaningful lives and to live in harmony with each other and with nature. They seek to resurrect the profession's historical interest in exploring means other then economic growth for alleviating poverty and deprivation. Their economics once again focuses on well-being, rather then the artifice of utility, which allows us to replace the maximization of consumption with more complex goals.

Markets still have their place, the authors concede. They communicate information about desires and scarcity amongst buyers and sellers. They create incentives and they help coordinate economic activity. But they do not correct for inequities in distribution, leaving some desperately poor while others buy a third vacation home. Markets can also favor the undemocratic exercise of power, and they can undermine the conditions required for sustainability and community. Economic policy, this text argues, must take into account these realities.

Microeconomics in Context is the ideal text for getting a solid foundation in both neoclassical microeconomics and its limitations. It also looks sufficiently like a mainstream textbook that some profs might be able to teach from it without the department chair noticing that a heretical text had made it into the building. But because it seeks to provide a foundation in the neoclassical approach, even from a critical perspective, its treatment of alternative schools of thought is at times limited. nate

This book does exactly what the above Book Description says it does so there is no need to give a summary description here.

Because this book takes a "broader" approach (which here means that it incorporates insights from non-neoclassical schools of thought and other disciplines), it necessarily gives a bit less attention to the "mechanics" of some basic neoclassical tools (viz. details about and permutations of graphical representations of models).

This is not to say it doesn't deal pretty fairly with the dominant paradigm or give a clear introductory account of it. It certainly does that. It is suggested, however, that a student wishing to thoroughly understand some of the finer details of graphical representations of neoclassical models (and deductions from them) should use this book in conjunction with a "standard" introductory Microeconomics textbook, such as by Robert Frank or John Sloman.

Equally, if a good student is to become a good economist, s/he would do well to read Goodwin et.al. in conjunction with their "standard" text. Thinking outside the (Edgeworth) box is more and more a prerequisite for economists these days.

This book does an excellent job providing an heterodox view of microeconomic theory. It provides insights from economists outside of the neoclassical model (many Nobel Prize winners), giving a more complete and realistic picture of how economics works. It is also clearly written with excellent examples and clear quantitative analysis.

In recent years, innovative texts in mathematics, science, foreign languages, and other fields have achieved dramatic pedagogical gains by abandoning the traditional encyclopedic approach in favor of attempting to teach a short list of core principles in depth. Avoiding excessive reliance on formal mathematical derivations, it presents concepts intuitively through examples drawn from familiar contexts. The authors introduce a well-articulated short list of core principles and reinforcing them by illustrating and applying each in numerous contexts. Students are periodically asked to apply these principles to answer related questions, exercises, and problems.

The text also encourages students to become "Economic Naturalists," people who employ basic economic principles to understand and explain what they observe in the world around them. An economic naturalist understands, for example, that infant safety seats are required in cars but not in airplanes because the marginal cost of space to accommodate these seats is typically zero in cars but often hundreds of dollars in airplanes. Such examples engage student interest while teaching them to see each feature of their economic landscape as the reflection of an implicit or explicit cost-benefit calculation.

The Second Edition of Frank/Bernanke follows the successful First Edition with several pedagogical improvements. Based on reviewer feedback, this edition offers (1) even more streamlined coverage of the cost-benefit approach in the introductory chapter; (2) exercises that are more closely tied to the examples; (3) expanded narrative explanations of important principles, making them more accessible to average students; and (4) expanded coverage of several key topics [see below]. The result is a revision that is motivating to students, an effective text for teaching, and an exciting first course in Economics.

This textbook is brilliant...The authors write concepts that take other authors thousands of words to explain in less than a paragraph...I have taught economics for seven years and thought I'd never buy another intro book again...This book is like a murder mystery that you can't put down...

Microeconomics is Fun Again.......2005-10-07

This book is great! Would give it a 100 stars if they had it. It breaks down all these economic concepts that you are having trouble with into simple, basic ideas that you can relate to. It uses clear, everyday examples and discusses everything in such a conversational sense, you won't even remember you are doing MicroEcon. So this may come across to some as the book being written for high schoolers ( I personally didn't feel that way and I am an MBA), but isn't the whole objective to understand the material in the most basic sense, so you can remember and apply it?

I read every chapter and skipped none.

I was privileged to be a student of Bob Frank and all I can say is, What an extraordinary talent! I am glad that I didn't place out of his class because I considered doing that in the beginning. I cried on the last day of class.

I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone at any level taking an introductory Microecon class.

An Intuitive Approach.......2004-08-19

This book is elementary. It is intended for high-school and first year uni students who have never had to go near anything even resembling economics before. It seeks to achieve what most texts only say they attempt to do: (a) get you to THINK like an economist, and (b) CONVINCE you that this mode of thought actually makes 'good sense'. Using various stories, real and imaginary, it certainly points the student down path (a). As to whether it does the same with (b) is a trickier question - not least, paradoxically, because of the success of (a); that is, one suspects students might start to get the feeling that they are being hood-winked - "Surely it can't be THAT simple", one can hear them say doubtfully. ...Out of the mouths of babes.

I read this book in the fall 2006 when I was in the midst of looking for a job in the DC area. It was a helpful resource. It reinforced information I already knew and then mentioned new information. Wow! What an eye opener this book was!.......2001-04-22

What a great little book! It was refreshing to read a book about child training that used a simple strightforward approach to raising children...the same methods from the Bible used by our grandparents and their parents. Liberal parenting methods that came about in the 50's and 60's have resulted in bedlam in America's homes, which has moved out into the schools and the streets. This book will be quite a shock to folks like me who were raised by Dr. Spock, and may seem harsh to some, but the methods described in the book seem loving and intended only for the welfare of the child's body and soul! Easy to read and understand, it includes thought-provoking questions meant to lead to honest introspection (in the 'warning signs' section) about one's own child rearing results. It even includes ways to deal with fussy eaters, teaching courtesy and respect, and good manners (all but forgotten). It's a tough little book, and will stand up to the huge volumes filled with sappy advice like time-outs, and the dance-on-eggshells-around-your-kids approach to parenting today. I recommend this little book to any parent who wants to be challenged to raise better children in a sinful world.

The Eisenhower Administration developed and implemented policies in Southeast Asia that contributed directly to the massive American military involvement in Vietnam in the decade after Dwight Eisenhower left office. Working with the most recently declassified government records on U.S. policy in Vietnam in the 1950s, David L. Anderson asserts that the Eisenhower Administration was less successful in Vietnam than the revisionists suggests. Trapped By Success is the first systematic study of the entire eight years of the Eisenhower Administration's efforts to build a nation in South Vietnam in order to protect U.S. global interests. Proclaiming success, where, in fact, failure abounded, the Eisenhower Administration trapped itself and its successors into a commitment to the survival of its own frail creation in Indochina. The book is a chronicle of clandestine plots, bureaucratic fights, cultural and strategic mistakes, and missed opportunities.

Anderson examines the politicla environments in Saigon and Washington that contributed to the deepening of American involvement.
