I just received my copy of "Divinely Decadent" and was immediately captivated by the beautifully lush interiors presented by Stephen Calloway. I loved the spicy, exotic rooms which pepper this elegantly slim volume and cannot wait to devour it page by sumptuous page. "Divinely Decadent" is not your mother's decorating book. It is bold, over the top, balls-to-the-wall decorating that is definitely decadently divine!!!

I have lots of books on decorating, but this is the only one I can recall where the text is just as interesting and illuminating and exciting as the photographs--and the photographs are terrific. The authors begin the book with a nice "history of decadence", and they were truly inspired in organizing the book around the Seven Deadly Sins--you will have a hard time deciding which of the seven is your favorite. There are plentiful quotes from such demigods of decadence as Oscar Wilde, and wonderful over-the-top (and gorgeous) interiors designed by flamboyant characters like the late great Tony Duquette. The choice of interiors ranges from the traditional French-boudoir style of decadence to modern edgy ones, so there is something for everybody. My house is a nice virtuous Arts and Crafts house, but this book gave me some clues about the use of rich colors, fabrics, and the combining of objects so that even I can edge closer toward divine decadence. Loved it!

Over the Top and Wonderful!.......2002-03-14

Stephen Calloway definitely does not subscribe to the theory "less is more." Thank goodness. Who needs another book on tasteful, bland interiors? I much prefer the pillow-strewn canopy beds and sparkling Edwardian dining rooms in Divinely Decadent. There's an almost voyeuristic thrill in being able to peek into these incredibly sumptuous interiors. The fact that they are inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins only adds to their over-the-top appeal!

I've owned this book for a couple of years now, and it has helped me many, many times. The "ideas" themselves are okay, but I love this book because of all the paintings. I have tried new techniques, design elements and subjects because I find something inspirational in a painting contained within the book. I browse through it often. The paintings are all very different, which is a plus, not just one style, subject or medium.

This book has great ideas for subjects of paintings (and drawings), not matter if your medium is oils, pastels, acrylics, watercolors, pencil, or charcoal. The examples are very good artwork. Good for beginners who do not know what to paint and experts who are "stuck" without inspiration.

Sigh...I was rather disappointed with this book. I expected so much more from it than what was delivered. For a book that purports to give ideas for increasing originality in your own paintings it is surprisingly unoriginal.

You get suggestions such as "Add a Still Lake to Your Landscape", "Paint a Wild Animal", "Capture Animals in Their Natural Habitat", "Paint a Season of the Year" and "Paint an Arrangement of Dried Flowers", etc. etc. etc. I'm not kidding. This is what is passed on as expanding creative boundaries. It is filled to the brim with cliched themes that are supposed to help spark creativity and originality. Some suggestions begin to show promise but there were just too few overall. One of the good things about the book is that at least many of the paintings were beautiful (although boring in my opinion - victims of the cliches they were illustrating).

Which frankly leaves me baffled as to why it was felt to be neccessary to publish this book. Save your change and get books that showcase award winning paintings such as one of the "Best of" books for watercolors, oils, pastels, colored pencil or other media. You'll get plenty of inspired ideas from these type of books and a lot more original ideas for inspiration.

This is a fabulous book. It helped me to see and want to paint the magic and beauty in ordinary objects. Katchen shows a wonderful selection of artist's works. This book is full of inspiring ideas for choosing and arranging objects and colors for delicious paintings.

Jim Church has done it again. This concise reference to underwater video goes through the basics of using the camera to extensive help in setting up scenes, in-camera editing, and story production. The use of illustrations and demonstating photographs is most helpful. The book is very "technical" in areas where Jim feels that knowledge of the way the camera, lenses, and lighting interact will help the videographer improve his outcome. To my knowledge this is the best book available for the beginning to intermediate level underwater video photographer.

Maybe I'm too much of a novice, but this book (which is now in it's second edition) is a bit too technical for me. Certainly the techniques for video taping are helpful, and all is explained clearly with solid illustrations. But the sections on lenses, focal lengths, etc, gets to be a bit much.

Overall, I think for a beginner (and maybe more experienced) this is worth getting . . . I just wish some parts were a bit easier to comprehend.

This book is outstanding. It has totally revolutionised the way we approach our investment in sponsorship. I had never realised we were so backward until I read this book and it made so much sense. We are now in the process of renegotiating many of our sponsorships to get better results for the brand, not just put our logo in front of people.

The tools and checklists that are included in the book and on the CD-ROM have made changing our approach much easier. They work on all sizes and types of sponsorship. We have even customised some of them for our regional marketing people so that they can do a better job on the smaller sponsorships that they invest in.

Save Hours Studying for the State Exam.......2004-10-13

I was reluctant to buy this book at first, due to its low page count and high price. I took the plunge, and it was totally worth it.

As anyone who's studied for the Colorado state exam knows, the state book you study from is dry, boring, and difficult to get through awake.

Colorado Real Estate Basics is pretty easy to read, as it's set up in a Q and A format. I got through it in a couple hours... where the state book would have taken me a couple days.

The state book's content differs a tiny bit from Colorado Real Estate Basics (which was written in 2002), and the state book is a bit more clear on some issues, like agency.

Overall, though, Colorado Real Estate Basics is a great study guide - just make sure to skim the state book as well.

Timeless lessons Dr. Seuss's style.......2007-03-10

My daughter who is in kindergarten bought this book home from her school library after they had been reviewing the works of Dr. Seuss. This is by far her favorite Dr. Seuss book and a great value as it contains 3 full-length stories. The illustrations were very appealing and made the both of us laugh. This book would not appeal to children under age 5 as it requires some concrete thought in which children may not necessarily be ready for until they enter school. There are important lessons (envy, pride, etc) to learn that are perfect for school-age children to comprehend. This is definitly a must have for the school age child.

Luvas' book on Antietam Battlefield.......2001-09-03

Luvas' book provided an excellent itinerary for those who would visit the Antietam battlefield. However, it fails to help the reader understand the context of the given part of the battle to the whole. After positioning you at strategic points he simply reprints copies of the official reports from officers involved in the components of the battle. Since many officers' reports were comprehensive reports of the entire battle, and Luvas takes only a small section of the report for a given area of the battlefield, even the reports lose the perspective of context.

Another thing missing is a comprehensive map of the battlefield with his selected stops, again helping show the context of a given part of the battle with the whole.

Off the Beaten path - Antietam National Battlefield.......2000-01-29

If you are interested in the Maryland campaign of 1862, this is the book for you! It includes South Mountain, Crampton's Gap, Harpers Ferry and a good bit of detail on Shepherdstown.

Unlike the Gettysburg guide this book outlines the campaign on an "operational" as well as "tactical" level. Both of which are easy to understand and follow along if you desire to use this book as a battlefield guide.

The driving directions along with detailed maps, historical photos, and reports taken from the Official Records make this book a complete tour and reference package!

If you require an outstanding volume of work detailing nearly every aspect of the campaign, then look no further. I highly recommend this book as "must read" for anyone interested in Marse Robert's Maryland Campaign of 1862. It will also make an excellent reference tool for anyone who cannot make it to the battlefield. It brings the fields of battle to you!

ACW Battlefield Tour Bibles.......1998-08-27

These series of books from the U. S. Army War College are the best available resource for conducting ACW battlefield tours - assuming that your purpose in touring battlefields is to study and understand the applicable tactics, strategy and terrain and to develop an appreciation for the objectives and efforts of the participants. If you go to ACW battlefields to gawk and gossip as an everyday tourist then an investment in these guides is unnecessary. If you have an active interest in ACW history, military history in general or fascinating chapters in human history, then these guides are remarkable values, "Best Buys". Helpful maps illustrate troop engagements and key terrain features, excerpts from the Official Records provide first person commentary from the participants at each "Stop" on your tour and concise analysis is provided to tie the story together. Thorough but not intimidating, insightful and objective, with no deficiencies noted. This particular guide is especially insightful in that the tour includes the Battle of South Mountain preceding Antietam and includes "Stops" in backwoods areas of western Maryland and West Virginia which are otherwise unrecognized as significant to the Battle of Antietam. A great way to tour a beautiful area of our country and understand in detail a significant chapter in our history.

This book was an outstanding guide for touring the area around Harpers Ferry and Sharpsburg. Using the timetable guide as well as the driving directions I was able to poke around some of the real back roads of West Virginia and Maryland. It is very much a worth while guide for touring a fascinationg and horrific section of our country

Luvaas has written an excellent book for anyone wanting to know more about the South Mountain/Harper's Ferry/Anietam Campaign of 1862.

Each chapter contains the following information:

1. Detailed driving direction for reaching the site.
2. A description of what happened at the site.
3. An account of the action by an acutal participant.
4. Map(s) of troop dispositions at the site during the campaign.

I have referred to the book during some of my several visits to the Antietam Battlefield and have thoroughly enjoyed each tour! A detailed order of battle and other pertinent information is included in the book.

The only complaint I really have is that the maps could have been more detailed and numerous. Complaint aside, I highly recommended the book as a valuable guide to the actions in September 1862.

Quick and Valuable Little Guide Before You Go.......2005-09-23

A great little book to take a look at before you go or to read on the way there. It's short and to the point. Terrific drawings of each area.

Also has such a "you are there" feel that it is an especially valuable little synopsis for historians, researchers, writers, and others who won't be visiting the site in person.

This book matches the tour stops, and can be used with the Park Service's auto-tour map or audio cassettes, too.

Highly recommended.
