Customer Reviews:
Great Kit..........2007-01-05
I loved this kit. It gave information on who Jacob Lawrence was through the Story Painter book and had all the supplies needed to create a story telling series of my own (or of my student's own) using the same materials that Jacob Lawrence used.
Great School Project!.......2002-04-06
I read several children's books that contained Jacob Lawrence's art work then we proceeded to paint our own pictures using the materials Jacob Lawrence often used. The children, Kindergarten to 6th grade took the assignment seriously and created beautiful works. I highly recommend this art kit and have purchased the Frieda Kahlo art kit as well.

Product Description
A gorgeously painted work of high fantasy comics storytelling from the French bandes-dessines master, Civiello. Page after page of beautiful artwork entices the reader into a complex and breathlessly paced tale. Enjoyed by tens of thousands of readers worldwide during its serialized presentation in the renowned comics magazine Heavy Metal.
Customer Reviews:
Stunning images; but not so easy to understand.......2005-12-14
Comics aren't always very easy to read. No matter how skilled the artist is, sometimes it's difficult to make out what's really going on in the pages, the dialogue isn't always easy to follow, you can't always be sure in what order you're supposed to look at the images or read the text, and many of the best comics really demand you to concentrate hard and really focus on what you're doing.
But, if you're willing to do just that and not give up easily, a well-drawn and well-written comic can be a truly amazing experience. And A Bit of Madness is just that. Frenchman Emmanuel Civiello's incredible fantasy epic in four chapters was initially published by Heavy Metal magazine, but now Checker Book Publishing Group has, fortunately, decided to publish all four chapters in one single volume. The format is oversize, 23 x 32 centimetres, and that's a size that fits Civiello's work, because I've rarely seen such a well-drawn comic. The images really are incredibly beautiful, and the large format makes the experience unusually intense. This truly is art at its best.
However, it's not an easy read. But it's worth a try. Inspired by, among others, J.R.R. Tolkien and Celtic mythology, Civiello has created an epic fantasy adventure where we follow Igguk, an elf chosen to save his homeworld from a horde of demons bent on destructing everything light and beautiful. Accompanied by, among others, a troll with a speech impediment and a human sorceress, Igguk finds himself in a bunch of strange situations; all the while looking for The Heart of the Crystal, which is the only thing that can save his world.
Well, to be truly honest, I didn't always quite understand everything that happened, but I didn't mind that much, since the beautiful images and interesting dialogue made it worthwhile to re-read pages I never understood. Civiello has, by all rights, been praised for his creation, and I wouldn't mind a bit having some of his images enlarged, framed, and put up on my walls.
A Bit of Madness is an incredibly beautiful comic, both exciting and funny from time to time, but beware, it might a difficult read to people not used to complex comics.

Book Description
It's 1983 and Max Romero, social worker, is on the brink of a nervous breakdown. The job is getting to him. It's time for a change. He quits his job only to find that he's trapped by circumstances he has no control over. The existential quality of his life leads him from one misadventure to another until he reaches the point of complete insanity. In the end, life throws him a curve that no one saw coming.

Reviewed by Elizabeth Burton from Blue Iris Journal.......2004-10-03
May 2002
Max Romero is a drifter, not in its sense of "hobo" but because he really isn't connected to anyone or anything. His life outside his job as a social worker in the welfare department is made up mostly of sex, drugs and indifference.
Then, as if some divine scientist had decided to experiment with him, Max's life goes a little berserk. His neighborhood drug dealer is gunned down next door. He quits his job and drives a cab to make his rent. A sometimes girlfriend announces he's made her pregnant and moves in. Finally, he experiments with one too many recreational chemicals.
Set in the Me Era of the mid-1980s, J.L. Navarro's A Little Bit of Madness is an existential drama of a man with nowhere to go and no desire to get there. Max Romero is a cynic, a case of burn-out who would just as soon stay that way. He has no real connection to any of the people who surround him and, seemingly, no need for one. Indeed, nothing in his existence, or those of his friends, seems as clearly defined as the utter banality of their lives. They are all full of amorphous dreams they will never fulfill simply because doing so would require too much effort.
Written with a sharp but nonjudgmental eye, this book reveals the hunger for escape -- from reality, from responsibility, from caring any more about oneself or others than is absolutely necessary for survival -- that keeps a group of talented people lost in a defeat of their own making. Even their passion is dispassionate, a friction of flesh that satiates but never satisfies.
Mr. Navarro populates the story with characters that are at once bizarre and recognizable and whose depth comes, ironically, from their very shallowness. There are no happy endings here, no enlightenment or redemption. A Little Bit of Madness is a sad story, and one that rings true because of it.

Addressed to the European industry and IT community, the report provides a comprehensive technical and business perspective on the project's goals, activities, experience, and results.

Book Description
The fluidity of transboundary waters perfectly represents contemporary challenges to modern governance. This book offers conceptual and empirical support for the idea that the human relationship with water must move beyond rationalist definitions of water as product, property, and commodity. Depending on context, water may be a security issue, a gift of nature, a product of imagination, or an integral part of the natural or cultural ecology.
The contributors represent a range of disciplines, including anthropology, law, environmental analysis, political science, and social ecology. Included are case studies of the Imperial and Mexicali valleys on the U.S.-Mexico border, parks and rivers in Zimbabwe, salmon in the Pacific Northwest, the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative, Lake Constance in Central Europe, the Black Sea, and the Inguri River between Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Book Description
Mothers today must raise girls in a vastly different environment than they themselevs experienced. In this practical book, Dr. Ann Caron first discusses what is happening to girls' bodies and minds in this maturating period and then raises issues that affect mothers and daughters daily: trust, dependency, sex, peers and friends, competition, alcohol and drugs, discipline, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful book for moms of teens.......2001-06-05
A good jumping off point for moms searching for a way to relate to their daughters. No earth shattering information but it is concrete with useful suggestions. Would recommend it to someone looking for much needed advice. The most helpful aspect of the book is it's description of adolescence as a developmental stage. It normalizes what many go through as their daughters begin to separate from the family in a sometimes overwhelming way.
I Highly Suggest This Book For Dads of Adolescent Girls Too.......1999-12-16
I bought this book several years ago when my daughter was 12 and I've read and reread it many times since. It's one of the few books on teenage girls I have read that is written to teach both parent/adult and child about the stress and strain of adolescence. The information in the book is applicable to "fathers" as well. Now that my daughter is seventeen, I'm convinced that she would behave in exactly the same manner if she had been raised by her father alone. With this in mind, I encourage Dads to read this book, too.
This book helped me tremendously to understand my 12 yr girl.......1999-07-26
I didn't want this book to end. It was so insight ful, helped me to think before I speak to my 12 yr old girl. I'm trying to apply the concept of no negative feed back, even in the face of the "7th grade uglies". I wish she had written more on this subject. I'm about to read "Strong Mothers, Strong Sons" for my 18 and 12 year old sons.

Book Description
Harry Stein gives us the conversations of a group of older men who meet every week for lunch to reflect on their lives and the state of the world.
What is a well–lived life? What is honour, and does it have a place in our society? A profound and poignant meditation on the meaning of honour, told through the words of men who lived life according to the forgotten rules of trust and responsibility. From these conversations, Stein shows us men who lived their lives according to values that have since been declared relative or obsolete: honour, responsibility, decency, and an uncynical commitment to being the best men they could be. Stein presents the stories of this remarkable group of men who lived through the difficult time of the mid–20th century and all its wars and social upheavals.
We meet Moe Turner, Stein's father–in–law, a mathematician involved in research on the H–bomb who is Stein's connection to the group. We meet Boyd Huff, a survivor of the Nazi prisoner camps, whose youngest son was killed in a gun accident and oldest is a hospitalized schizophrenic. We meet Gene Cooper, an electrical engineer and the emotional centre of the group. These three men, and the rest of the club, have had difficult lives and plenty of trying moments, yet all of them have survived with their sense of right and wrong, of honour and love, fully intact. Stein connects their background, stories and lives, to the valuable views and ideas they share with him now. What the reader comes away with is a renewed sense of purpose, a new confidence in the strength of courage and conviction in your beliefs – even as those of the world change around you.
Customer Reviews:
Great discussion-starter.......2004-06-08
As I was reading this book we were talking about it around the office and it has led to some great discussions because there are 3 different generations represented in my office and 3 very different perceptions of "the greatest generation". Whether you agree with the premise or motives behind war, or believe there is a God or not, or if you just want to read what some very interesting characters have to say, Harry Stein's book is a must read.
The men themselves have great life stories to share, and I have to admit, I've developed a bit of a crush on the crusty and crazy Moe. If he were only 45 years younger and single....
Stein has done an outstanding job of tying in the ideals from his parents' generation to his experience in the 60s to the changes that are sweeping our country now. I don't think he demonstrated "liberal guilt" as much as he just blatantly reveals that maybe the social changes of the 60s, although had their history-making moments, may have gone too far in some ways and undermined what the older generations had worked for.
If nothing else, pick up a copy and read Chapter 14. Outstanding. Well-written and thought provoking. This is one to share.
they speak for themselves the best.......2004-05-25
I enjoyed listening to Stein's transcription of these fascinating, eccentric and brave men. They have a lot to say and Stein gives them their due..but when he starts editorializing, he can be a bit annoying. In his introduction(and at various times throughout the book) Stein gets into the "good old days" business. Those days weren't all that good.
Also, I think he asumes that all of the "greatest generation" were rather conservative. Not true. They probably were more self-reliant and a bit more brave..though some were brave communists and so on, who fought in the Spanish Civil War or in the leftist underground.
All the same, he does honor these special WW11 veterans and I am glad I read the book.
Everyday heroes -- become one now.......2004-03-27
Too often, we tear down our heroes in a misguided attempt to "humanize" them -- but if being perfect is a prerequisite, then nobody can ever truly be a hero. Thankfully, in "The Girl Watchers Club," Harry Stein sets things straight. These men demonstrate that the essence of heroism is character. It's the will to do what must be done, and to keep on doing it because it's right. That's not a small thing by any means, especially in these days of moral relativity, but it requires no special skills or training, and any of us can do it if we're willing to try. Yes, the Girl Watchers are a most interesting bunch of characters, and it's immensely enjoyable to get to know them through Stein's engrossing narrative. The book is a winner on that level alone. But the book's subtitle is no afterthought -- life really is a battlefield, and these guys have much to teach us about winning. Truly inspiring.
Physician Heal Thyself.......2004-03-18
Harry Stein seems to be suffering from the conservative equivalent of liberal guilt. Contemplating the inequities of a 60's draft that he admits to having evaded, Stein philosophically strokes his chin and says, I still think the war was wrong, but maybe I should have gone; it might have been character building. Forget about the millions dead; Harry Stein could have had a character building experience!
It is indeed odd that in this ode to personal responsibility, Stein so often uses the circumlocution "my generation" when he is so clearly talking about himself. Hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of his own generation fought in that war he avoided. One of them (and only one of them) is running for president right now.
Another problem with this book is the way it writes off, in a way that sometimes borders on contempt, its female cast of characters. The male leadership of the 60's "revolution" that Stein now says he regrets his role in was notorious for relegating women to the kitchen and the bedroom. Reading this book, one can't help but wonder if that wasn't one part of that revolution that Stein would have kept. Indeed, the WW2 generation men Stein is writing about often seem to respect the women in their lives far more than Stein does.
In spite of its flaws, however, this is a book well worth reading. If you can get past Stein's neo-conservative handwringing, there is a story here. It is a story worthy of Steinbeck, and (polemical digressions notwithstanding) Stein tells it very well indeed. This book fills an important gap in the social history of modern America, and I can only hope that some day that Stein will grow up enough to write about his own generation with the same respect and nuanced understanding that he gives the men who raised them.
They care.......2004-03-16
THE GIRL WATCHERS CLUB could be a documentary but the skill of the writing makes it read like a novel. The men of the group care about each other; they care about their families; they care about their country; Harry Stein grows to care about them himself, regardless of how his generation felt about "people over thirty" in the 1960s. The book not only rings nostalgic bells for readers who shared those years, but it is extremely important that young people read it in order to understand what their families experienced in the years of depression and war, and to be reminded to express appreciation of their parents while there is still time to do so. There are many lessons to be learned from reading the book. It will end all too quickly because the reader has come to care for its cast of characters.

small means handy but limited.......2002-07-02
I took this book to Thailand in 1999 with the full knowledge that it does not contain all the birds that I would most likely encounter, but its handy size and weight did fit the bill.
Unfortunately, it seemed that half the birds I saw weren't in the book, but maybe that was just my luck. In addition, due to space constraints, geographical distribution descriptions were vague, so I was left wondering if the sunbird I saw was the one pictured or it was another similar one mentioned but not pictured nor fully described.
Instead, I relied on a fat book available from a publisher in Bangkok (written in English) that both my hotel hostess and my hired guide used in Chiang Mai.
All in all, this small guide is good if you have concerns about weight and space and don't mind not knowing what species of sunbird you're looking at. It's also good for getting a general idea of the variety of Thai bird species.
