This book is rich in images showing the hole process that several artists pass to reach the final illustration.

This is a very slick, handsome book that details the process of illustrating children's books from the point of view of the professional illustrator.
I especially like how each artist is profiled. A single picture from a project is selected, and we see in about twenty steps how the work was done; from the initial concept all the way through to the finished piece. Then we have a few pages at the end of the artist's profile showing other work they have done in both the children's book arena and the commercial illustration market.
By going step-by-step, we get to see how a picture book is illustrated right from the start. We see concept sketches, research materiels and how they are used to shape the details in the images, and then the techniques of the artists as they work through to competion. We also gain insight into the creative process in the artist's mind, as each one explains why they choose to do a certain thing in a certain way.
Although I personally like to stick to watercolor or line & wash, several different techniques are highlighted here. Besides watercolor, gouche, collage, colored pencil, and even computer illustration is represented. Besides being interesting in their own right, seeing the different styles and techniques can offer up new ideas if like me, you prefer just one medium.
This is a great way to learn the craft, and how it works. If there was anything disappointing about the book, it would have to be the seemingly short length of it. I also would have liked to have seen master watercolorist Jon J. Muth profiled. Otherwise, this is a wonderful reference for the artist who is serious about becoming a picture book illustrator.
Splendid Introduction into Children's Book Illustration.......2000-09-16
I bought this book some time ago and I am still pleasantly surprised by the quality of it. Anybody who wants to know the technical details in the field of Children's Book Illustration is very well served. Lots of practical ideas and as a reader you can look over the shoulder of some of the best artists in this field. The layout is also quite intriguing, there being for every artist a step by step list of how he works. The comments are accurate and helpful for someone who wants to start illustrating himself.

Childhood memories.......2005-05-08
A very chaotic way of life got worse for Ataru and alien princess Lum when deranged redhead Ran entered the scene. And Ran's revenge attempts rule "Ran Attacks!", one of the most entertaining volumes of Rumiko Takahashi's first long-running series. ("I still have scars from that coincidence!")
Mayhem rules when Sakura agrees to create a love potion for Lum to give Ataru... except it seems to have a strange effect on him. Later on, Ataru tries to cheat with a god of knowledge, a host of deities crash the "Plains of Heaven" play (or as Lum calls it, "Stairway to Heaven"), and a closed campus policy sets off a war between the rebellious students and their wily teachers. Then a ghost cat starts haunting the staircase, and Lum and Ten get drunk on pickled plums -- and Lum is a mean drunk.
But all is not over with Ran, the deranged redhead who holds several childhood grudges against Lum. To protect Ataru, Lum clones him -- except that Ran also clones him, and soon an army of Atarus is running amuck. Ten loses his powers when his horn falls off -- much to Ataru's delight. And gluttonous yet gorgeous alien Rei arrives at the school, and Ran tries to win him over with her lunch -- but things are not that easy.
Rumiko Takahashi excels at creating complex, entertaining series that would have been drivel in someone else's hands. In this case, the comical story of the world's unluckiest, most lecherous teenager, and how he (very slowly) falls in love with a strong-willed alien princess. With lots of electric shocks, creepy priests and flying tiger-cows, of course.
Probably the closest thing this volume has to a dud story is Ran's tough-talking button, which she sends to control Ataru. The rest of the time, it's lovable mayhem, out-of-control attractions, and weird alien problems (like the cactus growing from baby Ten's head).
Ataru is the same ol' girl-hunting lech as always, who inexplicably doesn't notice anything weird about Ran. Takahashi provides a bit more insight into the childhood grudges that Ran has against Lum, and also shows what happens when Oni lose their horns. Alas, fan favorites like priestess Sakura, creepy monk Cherry, and long-suffering Shinobu appear relatively briefly.
The deranged Ran adds extra spice to an already funny volume of alien hijinks. A thoroughly amusing collection of sci-comedy stories.
First Benten, then Oyuki, and Kurama--here comes Ran.......2003-04-14
The arrival of the Oni princess Lum has allowed us to meet a variety of interesting characters, from biker girl Benten to elegant Neptune Princess Oyuki to Kurama, the leader of the Crow Demons. Now, we have the schizophrenic Ran.
Ran was a childhood friend of Lum, but now they are enemies. All of these accidents kept befalling Ran, and since it was Lum's bad luck to be present at all of these incidents, Ran blames her. So, she comes up with these plans to make Lum unhappy and steal the oni man Rei for herself.
Ataru loves Ran at first sight (like he does with every woman), and refuses to listen to Lum's warnings. Most of the other characters take to Ran immediately as well.
Ran is an interesting study in character and behavior. The face she normally presents to the world is sweet, innocent, and timid. But when she gets angry (which is often) she goes into her 'demon' mode. So far, Lum is the only one to have seen this side of her, so no one believes her stories of Ran.
A good book, and a worthy addition to the Urusei Yatsura line.
Welcome back Ran-chan.......2000-08-27
After a couple of volumes absence from Urusei Yatsura, Ran-chan returns with a vengence. This is another brilliant book from Takahashi-sensei, and it looks more at Ran and Lum's relationship. The stories are as solid as ever, and the only flaw in its otherwise perfect visage is that it's the last one Viz have put out. There's still a huge volume of unpublished Urusei Yatsura manga out there, let's see more!
This book got me hooked!.......1999-10-23
'Ran Attacks' was my introduction to the Lum books. I've read two others since then, but 'Ran Attacks' remains my favorite. It is definitely one of, if not the funniest book in the series! When Lum's childhood friend/rival decides to be mean to her, anything can happen! Unfortunately, all Ran's mischief seems to center on poor Ataru! From Ataru being cloned, to Lum's ex fiance, Rei showing up, to the gods arriving to liven up a school party, absolutely anything can happen! I would definitely reccomend this book to anyone, but I would suggest reading 'The Perfect Collection' and 'The Return of Lum - Uresei Yatsura' first, to introduce you to the characters.

What is man without a soul?.......2003-12-01
I have read many hundreds of books on Natural History and would be hard pressed to pick out one and say that it was written with more passion than this book by William Burt.He has spent decades searching for and photographing rails and their nests;especially Black and Yellow Rails.Anyone interested in birding knows these to be the most elusive.While it is relatively easy to hear them calling,extremely hard to see them and a monumental task to find and photograph a nest;particularly that of a Yellow Rail.
It takes a man of unbridled passion to even consider trying.Bill Burt is that man ,and combines a marvelous talent to write about it.Not only that;his photographic skills are stunning.In this book he gives us a picture of a Black Rail peering from its nest that is nothing short of spellbinding.Knowing what is involved in getting a photograph like this,makes one appreciate Bill's skills and passion.
He writes from the soul;as you can tell from this short quote:
"Winding away through the grass,a yellow rail is a fluent
marvel to behold.With nodding little dovelike head he
steadily seeks,nudges,pries,insinuates his way through,
and the rest of him slenderly follows.Smoothly,flowingly
he threads his way through tangles and snarls and clefts,
along suggested and imagined pathways through new and
green,through coarse,through fine;with unvarying
agility he worms,mouses,snakes his way along."
And how about this?
"The black rail relies on clerity for escape-quick as a
blink it can spring away,like a flea;but escape for a
yellow rail is something smoother:it just melts away."
He also describes his prep school teacher whose 'program
of rote and inculcation was so oppressive, so dull,so
lacking in life and oxygen that it ought to have
extinguished permanently any young boy's flicker of love
for nature.''Another thing about Mr.Wolf: he never took his
class outdoors.Responsively,I flunked.'
Bill writes from the heart about his passion for rails and
is a real treat to read.You will never look at a marsh
again,especially at night and think about rails, the same
way again.
A Passion for Rails.......2000-12-15
Shadowbirds is a story about Bill Burt's infectious passion for Rails - those secretive, "stealth" birds that inhabit some of the most challenging environs on earth - marshes. Through what can only really be called poetry he takes the reader with him as he tracks down and photographs some of the most difficult-to-find birds anywhere. His love of these birds and the way he allows us to see through his photographer's eyes made this a difficult book for me to put down. I just wanted more!
It is not the story, though, that distinguishes this book as much as it is his style, which like his photographs, is intensely personal and passionate.
If you love poetry, birds and a great detective story, give this one a read!
