Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A+ Design Book.......2006-06-09

This is a wonderful design resource book. The books shows the homes of some of the design world "greats". It is eclectic and not your run of the mill "pretty" interiors, but offers new directions in ways to think about design.

2 out of 5 stars May Be a good Coffee Table Book.......2006-01-19

I was somewhat disappointed in this book because I was looking for something that would explain the "French Style" of decorating. This is more a book of the homes of Parisian designers, obviously with a lot of money. The rooms in the book are beautifully photographed and I liked the chapter called "Seven Trends for Today." These included brief text and lots of photographs of the Provincial, Provence, Eclectric, Eccentric, Atlantic, Chalet and 1930-40's style trends. There was a brief description of the style trends, but the photos that followed gave good examples.

The remaining two chapters in this book are: Parisian Fashion Designers at Home and Parisian Interior Designers at Home. The problem with this book is the rooms depicted would require someone to have an unlimited budget and/or access to resources for their furnishings.

This book was not helpful in showing the "regular" person how to achieve the French Style in their own home. Most of the text just describes the exquisite items and creations. For example, "A vase- light has been created from minutely worked Venetian glass, and it dominates the sculpted wrought-iron pediment of a play cabinet which was designed by Gilbert Poillerat" which desribes an elaborate vase with flowers out of glass. There were a few rooms where you could probably implement and adapt to be used within your own home, but the "French Style" depicted in these rooms are based on ALL the elements, from the beautiful custom glasswork to the exquisite fabrics and furnishings.

If you are an interior designer who has clients with unlimited funds or are someone with an unlimited budget, you might find this book useful. For those of us who have to stay within a reasonable budget, this is not the book to learn and implement French Style.

What could have elevated this book above 2 stars would have been more informative text on creating the style and not just descriptions of the products and creators of the items in the photographs.

1 out of 5 stars Not What You Are Hoping For!.......2005-03-15

Having several books on French style and French Country style, many showcasing homes in France, this book is a huge disappointment. Few of the rooms are stylish, but rather, well just junky. I was looking forward to another look at French style in France, not just the interpretation of such in America. This is a coffee table book for those who have little design sense.

5 out of 5 stars Elle Decor: Grand Book of French Style.......2005-01-21

I have many books on style and decor, but this is by far one of my favorites. I love that it includes many facets of French style, not just the ubiquitous, American stereotype of what "French" looks like. Chapter headings read: "Provincial," "Atlantic," "Provence," and "Eclectic" (my favorite) to name a few. The back of the book is dedicated to showcasing the homes of a few Parisian fashion and interior designers, an addition that I quite enjoyed. If you're looking to redecorate or just love looking, this book is for you!

2 out of 5 stars French Designers.......2002-03-02

I felt that this book was a nice collection of work by French designers. It depicted various French designers work in various styles. It did not however show French style. This was what I was hoping to see.

    Book Description

For Walter De Maria, hurricanes, floods, and sandstorms--natural disasters--are "the highest form of art possible to experience." Through such monumental works as "The Lightening Field," a permanent installation in New Mexico which fuses the natural phenomena of lighting with the artistic process, De Maria has had a lasting and decisive impact on the orientation of art since the 1960s. This unique artist's book, one of only a few publications on this seminal artist, intermingles De Maria's sculptures with the city of Milan through a portfolio of black-and-white photographs by Nanda Lanfranco, produced in close collaboration with the artist, which reveal various crossroads of this Italian metropolis.
Essay by Germano Celant. Foreword by Walter De Maria. Preface by Miuccia Prada.

              Book Description

Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management

As a tool for clarifying the thinking of volunteer boards, the Drucker Self-Assessment Tool is unparalleled. This is a real way to develop a language, get to the critical issues, and move on--the most practical and efficient method I have seen. As facilitator of over 175 retreats, it is the best thing I've used--and I appreciate the enhancements and improvements!

--Peggy Outon, board chair, National Alliance for Nonprofit Management

The Drucker Foundation's Self-Assessment Tool has made a lot of changes in the way we do business. . . . The workbook was a good beginning. The interactions and 'homework reports' on flip-chart paper were a vital part of this learning process.

--Sue H. Brown, executive director, Senior Centers of Spartanburg County, Inc.

The results far surpassed our expectations. The Drucker Process literally revitalized the organization. The board members have rallied around a new mission statement, taken on a variety of tasks, and designed new programs, which are very realistic.

--Beth S. Cole, former executive director, American Academy of Home Care Physicians

For over fifty years, Peter F. Drucker has shared his wisdom with organizations in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. The Drucker Foundation Self-Assessment Tool puts his invaluable management experience into your hands—and gives you the means to rediscover the mission and potential of your nonprofit organization. Originally published in 1993, the best-selling Self-Assessment Tool has helped and inspired nonprofit boards, executives, and teams to apply Drucker's insights to their organizations' needs. Based on extensive user feedback and research, the new and improved Participant Workbook has been streamlined for greater flexibility and focus.

The revised Participant Workbook presents Peter Drucker's Five Most Important Questions and fully updated worksheets. There is no right way to use this tool: you make it your own. Its clear directions and straightforward method make it easy to implement with groups of any size, management level, or planning experience. By the And of the self-assessment process, participants will not only have a stronger understanding of their mission, values, and customers, but also an effective plan to apply what they learned.

Multiple Uses for the Self-Assessment Tool

? The leadership team--the chairman of the board and the chief executive--can lead the organization in conducting a comprehensive self-assessment, refining mission, goals, and results, and developing a working plan of action.

? Teams throughout the organization can use the Tool to invigorate projects, tailoring the process to focus on specific areas as needed.

? Governing boards can use the Tool in orientation for new members, as means to deepen thinking during retreats, and to develop clarity on mission and goals.

? Universities and colleges can use the Tool as a guide for field projects with organizations from the nonprofit, business, and government sectors, and as a resource for boards and faculty.

? Working groups from collaborating organizations can use the Tool to define common purpose and to develop clear goals, programs, and plans.

              5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2003-01-25

Peter Drucker has hit the nail on the head. This is strategic planning at its best, particularly for nonprofit organizations. The process is simple and concise, based on Drucker's 5 basic questions. The approach is comprehensive and inclusive. I recommend it to the leadership of any nonprofit organization.

5 out of 5 stars Results-oriented approach to change management.......1999-01-28

I am struck by its simplicity and by the depth of its value. Seeking to change the old paradigms of a beloved, yet antiquated traditional organization, while at the same time fostering the public support of long-time stakeholders, is daunting. But this no-nonsense approach perpetuates joint problem solving and ownership. DISCOVERY of the real, not assumed, answers to five essential questions helps to level the playing field. I am recommending its use and am seeking support for sponsorship of the two day seminars.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars SEX AND ALSO SPIRIT - DREAM COME TRUE!.......2003-06-04

I've read a lot of books on sexuality and a lot of books on spiritual themes - finally here's a wise and really insightful book on how the two go together. The human act of creation must be a spiritual act ... after all, who created us in the first place? But it seems sex has gotten so mundane - this book helps bring in the deeper parts of love ... and what a rush!

Well, sometimes I've felt just totally trascendent when making love, but usually I haven't known how to go to that amazing expanded place during sex, where there's no difference between me and my true love, and we just blast off into some infinite place that is definitely spiritual. Now I know - it's a secret everyone should know, which is why I'm writing these notes.

Selby is a psychologist who really knows how our minds and our spirit work together, and his book explains real simply what the mystic experience during orgasm is all about. He also teaches totally pragmatic ways to help a spiritual experience happen, every time you make love ... many thanks to him!

What I was especially surprised and happy to learn about, was that we can act on our own to finally heal old heartbreaks that get in the way of really opening up to our new love - that's where this book most helped me, since I'd just come out of a real heartbreak, and I'm mostly over it now, thanks to this book.

The other thing I learned from reading Sex and Spirit and then working with the inner programs of the book is that right when we're making love, we can consciously shift into special states of mind where we let go of worries, tune into the present moment, and allow some deeper natural force or whatever to "move us" together toward orgasm.

And one other thing that's really great are the chapters on letting go of trying to be a good lover, and also letting go of fantasies while making love - so that you're fully "here" and the pure experience just overwhelms ... I can't say all of this as good as the author does, he's definitely an expert on sexuality and he's also just very kind and patient in his teachings ...

Enjoying wild sex and deep spiritual feelings at the same time ... that's about as good as life gets - and this book is definitely the hands-on manual for really opening up and letting your whole soul merge with your lover. I give this ten stars!

                5 out of 5 stars Gettysburg Redux.......2005-04-23

These essays on Confederate and Union leadership were all edited by Gary Gallagher. And as anyone familiar with his other volumes of Civil War subjects from the University of North Carolina know, this has been a very successful formula for him.

The work herein represents a republishing of work put before the public in 1992 and 1993 with reworked or new material also presented this time around. I have all of his edited volumes from Chapel Hill and rate this just as good.

All of the essays in this volume are organized around Day One, Day Two, and Day Three for the battle of Gettysburg. There are pictures, maps, and the endnotes encompass some 50 pages. The authors included are: Richard A. Sauers, William Glenn Robertson, Carol Reardon, Alan T. Nolan, Gary M. Kross, Robert K. Krick, D. Scott Hartwig, A. Wilson Green, Peter S. Carmichael, and of course, Gary Gallagher. Anyone remotely familiar with the American Civil War will certainly recognize some, if not all, of these writers.

Though many books have been written, and continue so, concerning leadership during the three-day battle of Gettysburg, these authors feel additional areas require investigation. I agree.

This is a well put together volume at normal price for Civil War books, and I recommend it to one and all wanting to further their knowledge on those three days in July, 1863.

                Semper Fi.

5 out of 5 stars For all Gettysburg students, a potpourri of special topics!.......2003-11-26

This compilation of the essay volumes "The First Day at Gettysburg" and "The Second Day at Gettysburg" offers excellent
coverage of specialized topics for the Gettysburg student as well as students of the entire Civil War. Note that the essays
for July 3rd are totally different from the original volume "The
Third Day at Gettysburg & Beyond." These are fresh approaches to
different topics and available only in this volume, never having
appeared separately. Gettysburg students will enjoy this volume
immensely, and it should be in every Civil War library.

On July 1 and 2, 1863, armies commanded by George Meade and Robert E. Lee clashed in the hilly farm country surrounding Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Badly bloodied, the outcome of the battle still uncertain, they fought on into a third day, one whose close would decide the Civil War.

Jeffry Wert, a Pennsylvania high school teacher and well-published scholar of Civil War history, offers a sweeping account of that third day of battle, one that relies heavily on letters, diaries, and other primary sources. From those combatants, we learn of the "carnival of hell" that was Pickett's Charge, when "the incessant rattle of musketry sounded like the grinding of some huge mill." We read of the heroic Union defense of Culp's Hill against equally heroic Confederate attackers, of a stirring charge of Virginia cavalry that elicited "a murmur of admiration" from opposing Michigan horsemen led by George Armstrong Custer, and of the exhaustion and terror of ordinary soldiers, one of whom mused, "What men are these we slaughter like cattle and still they come at us?"

Like the battle itself on that final day at Gettysburg, Wert's narrative unfolds with breakneck speed, and sometimes with so much detail as to yield momentary confusion as it proceeds from one butchery to the next. Still, his account is painstakingly researched and very well written, and it deserves a place on the shelf alongside the work of Bruce Catton, Shelby Foote, and other popular historians of the Civil War. --Gregory McNamee

                Book Description

Jeffry D. Wert re-creates the last day of the bloody Battle of Gettysburg in astonishing detail, taking readers from Meade's council of war to the seven-hour struggle for Culp's Hill -- the most sustained combat of the entire engagement. Drawing on hundreds of sources, including more than 400 manuscript collections, he offers brief excerpts from the letters and diaries of soldiers. He also introduces heroes on both sides of the conflict -- among them General George Greene, the oldest general on the battlefield, who led the Union troops at Culp's Hill.

A gripping narrative written in a fresh and lively style, Gettysburg, Day Three is an unforgettable rendering of an immortal day in our country's history.

3 out of 5 stars Gettysburg, Day Three.......2006-03-05

A single-volume narrative account of the third day at Gettysburg.

In all honesty, as uncharitable as this sounds, I'm not sure another study of the third day at Gettysburg was needed. Pfanz' magisterial volumes have already covered much of this material in more detail and equal narrative interest. The cavalry battles, which are Wert's addition to his narrative of the third day, are covered here in adequate detail with rather little discussion of their contribution to the battle overall. (I'd recommend Longacre's work for more detail on the cavalry.)

Wert does do an excellent job of integrating primary sources throughout his text, bringing his narrative alive. He pays more attention to Pickett(et al.)'s Charge than other events, including the assaults on Culp's Hill, and his account saves its most descriptive language for that event, sometimes slipping over the line into melodrama. His analysis of why the battle turned out as it did seems solid but not revolutionary, with some interesting comments about the limitations of Confederate artillery.

I think this would be a useful, engaging read for a person wanting a single-volume account of the Civil War's most famous battlefield moment. For more advanced researchers, I don't think that it replaces preexisting resources.

                3 out of 5 stars Uninspiring.......2004-06-07

As anyone who made it to this page knows, books hundreds of pages long have been written on particular portions of the Gettysburg battlefield, from the railroad cut on Day 1 to McPherson's Woods etc. Plenty of large books have specifically discussed the individual days, but most books dealing with July 3 inevitably focus on Pickett's Charge. So when Wert, who's written biographies on Longstreet and Custer, attempted to write a book focusing on all of the action on Day Three, it was a very large undertaking. Inevitably, Wert comes up short.

Wert is largely uninspiring compared to the Pantheon of Gettysburg authors, like Pfanz and Coddington. And to justify writing a book about Gettysburg or July 3rd, topics that have been written about endlessly, there has to be some originality involved to give the narrative meaning. Wert simply does not accomplish this, except perhaps on the cavalry actions, and it isn't surprising when the book is only 300 pages long.

July 3rd's action begins near dawn on Culp's Hill. Pfanz covers this action infinitely better in his book on Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill compared to Wert's book. Pfanz book has just as many interesting first hand accounts, and it's a more descriptive narrative concerning the military movements and combat on Culp's Hill.

Pickett's Charge is, of course, the highlight of the action on July 3. Wert's book has nothing groundbreaking regarding any aspect of the charge, from the action to the Confederate command chain before the offensive. That's not surprising, considering the Charge has been discussed to death. However, you'll find much more description on the action in both Sears' and Coddington's books, and those are books covering the entire campaign, not just Day Three.

The only thing that separates this Day Three study from the rest is the detail it gives to the 4 cavalry actions on July 3rd. Generally most only mention Custer's and Stuart's action southeast of the field and Kilpatrick's assault on the Confederate right. This book describes those actions in strong detail and analyzes two less significant cavalry skirmishes.

Still, for anyone who wants to read 300 pages worth of text on July 3 at Gettysburg, it would benefit you to read a more specific book on Pickett's Charge or the Culp's Hill chapters of the Pfanz book. Put simply, Wert's sum is not greater than Day Three's parts.

4 out of 5 stars Good Solid Work on the Crucial Third Day at Gettysburg.......2003-06-13

From the drama of Meade's midnight conference to the gallant cavalry charge of Farnsworth south of the Round Tops, this book is a must for the Gettysburg enthusiast.

Granted, Wert may not be for the extreme purist ala Pfanz, but this very inexpensive work deserves a place on the shelf alongside Noah Andre Trudeau's comprehensive work, or the more recent works by James M. McPherson and Stephen Sears.

Wert gives good, solid narrative to the desperate clash on Culp's Hill, and hails the little-known George Sears Greene, the oldest General in the Union Army on the battlefield, as the unsung hero of the battle, as the failure of the Confederates to crack the right flank of the Union forces commanded by Greene at Culp's Hill (Gettysburg) seriously impacted Pickett's charge later that day.

The poignant aspects of the Culps Hill fight - the death of a scruffy little dog that charged with the Maryland Confederates against Maryland Unionist, and received a "Christian burial" from the heartbroken Union General who found him on the battlefield; the death of Wesley Culp, who was born nearby, went south to Virginia and joined the Rebels and died on his own property, and the horrible, suicidal charge of Charles Mudge's 2nd Massachusetts are part and parcel of Wert's narrative.

As a Cavalry enthusiast, I certainly have no complaints only complements for Wert's descriptive of the East Cavalry Battle, or the subsequent attempts by Merritt and Kilpatrick to get behind the battered Confederates by the Round Tops just after Pickett's charge. The reader will get a true feel of the ferocity and desperation of the Stuart-Custer fight, and of Kilpatrick's senseless order to Farnsworth to lead a mounted charge across the rocky and tree-filled landscape just south of the Round Tops.
Wert, to his credit, also writes of the little-known cavalry battle at Fairfield on the 3rd day between Merritt's Sixth U.S. Cavalry and Confederates led by "Grumble" Jones, a useless fight that resulted in a severe Union defeat (one of the captured Union cavalrymen was a Major George Cram, who was later commended by the Union Cavalry Chief Alfred Pleasanton in a document in this writer's possession).

By contrast, even the brilliant Gary Gallagher's series of essays in "The Third Day at Gettysburg and Beyond" doesn't even mention the cavalry fights!

Yes, the book is printed on rag paper, and yes, some of the maps described the wrong battles. For example the map depicting the fight on the South field (Round Tops)is actually the East Cavalry battle between Stuart and Custer, and vice versa. And yes, those were reasons why I gave this work a four-star review rather than the five-star which, with modifications and improvements it really deserves.

A good solid work on Gettysburg at an even better price!

                2 out of 5 stars I'm a bit disappointed........2003-01-24

While this book is exhaustive in it's verbal detail, it is too lacking in visual support - maps - to keep it all in mind while wading through it. And, what few maps there are are hard to find, and hard to refer back to because of the rag-edge paper the book is printed on. All in all, I would suggest another source for this battle.

2 out of 5 stars He is no Pfanz and I'm no fan of Wert.......2002-07-01

I should have known not to buy this book after I bought and read Wert's book on Custer: "Custer: The Controversial Life of George Armstrong Custer" a few years ago. A college history major (VMI but still a true Yankee),for the last 20 years I have focused my attention on two subjects: Gettysburg and Custer (not just Custer at Gettysburg). I have read most of the 20th Century and much of the 19th Century lierature on both subjects; I have toured Gettysburg over a dozen times. Why bother writing books dealing with the two most written about battles on the North American continent (Gettysburg and Little Big Horn) unless you had some new insight, brought together a well written amalgamation of prior personal and scholarly accounts or wished to do an in depth study? Maybe you could ask Mr. Wert why he has now done that twice. His book adds nothing new or interesting to the literature on Gettysburg. Mr. Wert's style is awkward and a tough read. He jumps around giving no part of the Third Day's battle adequate attention. It is written more like a college paper than a scholarly work and is not "personal" enough to be a piece of "popular" history. I bought this hoping to find a book that gave a complete view of the Third Day, not just Pickett's Charge, until Harry Pfanz does a book on the Third Day or Pickett. You would be better off reading one of the many good books on "the Charge" and then reading Pfanz' "Culp's Hill & Cemetery Hill" for the rest of the Third Day fighting, until Pfanz writes one. Please Mr. Wert; stay away from Pearl Harbor, Midway, D-Day or the Battle of the Bulge, maybe you could write your next book about Napoleon or the Battle of Waterloo. I never liked the French anyway.

A very descriptive and personal insight into one of the horrific battles of the Civil War. Through the soft southern voice of Mr. Foote you sense what it must have been like that fateful day. Ride along with General Lee that early morning as he reviews his troops, talks with his "Old War Horse" and contemplates the bloody battle to come.

Mr. Foote describes in great passionate detail the individual participants, strategy and events leading up to, during and after this battle. Take a glimpse back in time at the beautiful and tranquil rolling hills of Pennsylvania farmland. Soon to erupt to the most massive cannonade attack of the war. The once peaceful farmland will be covered by rivers of blood. Strewn throughout the countryside mounds of the dead and dying both man and beast .

After listening to this gripping audio tape, you will have experience the tragedies and horror of this battle both physically and psychologically from both sides. This account by Mr. Foote is a keeper and is a constant reminder of the ultimate sacrifice.
