Wonderful projects, great tips, inspirational.......2001-06-12

This is a great book to get you started using hand lettering in your crafts. The book starts out with basic information on tools and materials. Then there are great tips on transferring and using the computer to help your out if you handwriting and calligraphy skills are lacking.

The projects follow, and are broken up into lettering styles including romantic, modern, decorative, and vintage. Each section shows the full alphabet of several typestyles and a few have illustrations and notes of how to draw them correctly. For a beginner they can be traced and transferred. Typefaces include the basics like simple italic, block and script styles, decorative versals, uncials and art deco Anna, fun ones like Party and elegant ones like ITC Vintage. There is a typeface for almost any project.

A nearly endless array of projects can be enhanced with lettering and a wide range of typestyles are included here. My favorite projects include gilded glass coasters, an etched glass floating frame, botanical note cards, dotted gradient dessert plate and a raised Chinese character lampshade. All the projects are great and fairly easy to follow, but I was a bit disappointed that a full alphabet for my favorite typeface the author uses (stained glass) was not in the book.

In the back there is great resource list. There is also wonderful gallery that shows you all kinds of way to use calligraphy. It is very inspirational. The gallery artists are all listed in a directory with addresses, phone numbers and email address. This book makes a great gift for anyone into crafts especially rubber stamp and paper artists.

Goodbye God, We're Going to Texas: A Search for Health and Happiness is the biography of a truly vibrant women, whose life spanned a successful career, dedication to her Christian religion, survival in the lean years of the Great Depression, activism in her community, and more. Though she never married, family was quintessential to her, as were neighbors and friends. Alzheimer's disease marked the final chapter of life, but that far from defines the whole of her contribution. Her biography is unique in that each chapter also makes note of a different health care issue, from the specter of tuberculosis that loomed over her early years to her work in physical therapy. Highly recommended.

While this book does list some unique items that are not listed in other home buying books, it lacks in the grammar area.

I do like how the book is formatted (easy to read) and the grouping of web-links at the end of each section is invaluable. I also appreciate the light that the author sheds on the real estate game and what some people will try to do to dupe you out of your money.

On the other hand, I would hate for my child to pick up this book and to think that adults are in general this lacking in grammar skills.

There are multiple instances of the misuse of there/their/they're and many occurances of nonsense sentences due to the editor not reading this book thoroughly (using 'off' instead of 'of'). There are also sentences in this book that change verb-tense mid sentence.

Maybe that's why the type is so big. Maybe the author/editor are assuming that you'll read the book so fast that you won't catch any of their typos...

Great Book!: Gives advice other books don't........2003-05-01

This book is one of several that I have read on home buying. Although all good books on a specific subject will have overlap of information, Mr. Thornton reveals many additional facts and advice that the others don't. Also, it is an easy, quick-to-read yet comprehensive book printed in large type. I have much more confidence going out into the home buying market all by myself now. --Marsha

READ THIS BEFORE BUYING A HOME!.......2002-11-07

This book is worth...It saved me thousands of dollars in the long run. The author Todd Thornton clearly states in his book the home buying process from beginning to end. He starts with discussing your credit report to what you should look for in a home (for appreciative value) to how to negotiate. I almost bought a home for $94,500 until I read his book and realized the home was only worth $89,900. You will definately get your use out of the book. I read it four times during my house hunting and house buying process. I'm still reading it as I plan to close! Most importantly, it is EASY to read in an entertaining format. Before you do anything - buy the book. It was one of the best decisions I made - next to purchasing my home!

An Excellent Introduction to the Principles of War.......2001-06-08

At first glance, this thin, 223-page volume, which covers eighteen famous battles, might appear to offer little that is new or noteworthy. However, such a first impression would be erroneous, for the Atlas of Battle Plans is an excellent addition to any military library. This book should also be on the reading list of any serious military professionals.

Although most of these engagements are well known, the essays written on each battle offer amazingly fresh perspectives. The Atlas of Battle Plans attempts to discuss what was planned versus what occurred in eighteen battles. These battles are divided up into six sections, each with three battles that are representative of a given condition. These sections are: the classic ploys, surprise, misunderstanding, mission impossible, underestimating the enemy and narrow margins. The section on underestimating the enemy for example, includes the battles of Austerlitz 1805, Isandlwana 1879 and Singapore 1942. Each section has a brief introduction that summarizes the particular aspects of a type of battle. Each battle essay discusses the plans for both sides and has a before and after map. While the essays are succinct, they are also sufficient to detail the salient operational points. There is also a bibliography following each essay.

The writing style is both excellent and candid. Typically British military historians like to portray disasters as "gallant failures." Not here. In the section on the Blitzkrieg of 1940, the author notes that, "what seemed the 'miracle of Dunkirk must not be allowed to obscure the scale of the disaster: roughly 61 Allied divisions had been destroyed, including the best Allied armoured and motorized formations." In discussing the Battle of the Somme in 1916, that author notes that, "it almost seems as if they [the British generals] sat down and deliberately worked out how to get their own men killed to no purpose."

This volume would best be described as an introduction to the principles of war with case examples, rather than just a summary of battles. Taken together, the essays drive home in text and graphics, the fundamentals of operational-level warfare. This book should be read and re-read by military professionals and serious historians. The only failing of the volume is that not all the principles of war were addressed.

Slightly disappointing compared to available guides.......2007-09-25

Being a shorebird enthusiast, I have had this title in my sights for a while and planned to purchase it as soon as I could find a copy to look through. I have owned the old Helm guide since it came out but, for portability, in the field I tend to use Sibley or the Collins Bird Guide as a shorebird identification supplement to whatever national guide I am using (that is here in the Western Hemisphere). I felt it was about time I got my library up-to-date with this new volume which promised to supersede all my guides. However, when I finally managed to look over a copy I have to say I found it a little disappointing. For me at least, the illustrations do not match those of Killian Mullarney, Peter Hayman or David Sibley and the text does not seem to add much to the older Helm guide - indeed, I prefer that pioneering guide. It just shows how much care went into the preparation of those older guides - Shorebirds is 21 years old now and still hard to beat! This may be a personal view - and admittedly based on a short perusal - but I could not justify adding the book to my library.
