Book Description
Giorgio Vasari remarked that Luca Signorelli was "as famous a painter in Italy as any one has ever been." Mentored by Piero della Francesca, he developed a unique style which was characterized by violent and torturous movement of the figures and complex iconography. In this continuation of our successful Renaissance painters' series, Signorelli experts Tom Henry and Laurence Kanter offer a thorough consideration of the artist's entire body of painting in the first comprehensive treatment of his work.
Customer Reviews:
Luca Signorelli: The Complete Paintings.......2003-10-21
Tom Henry and Laurence Kanter, both highly regarded scholars of Signorelli's work, have produced the finest and most comprehensive catalogue of Luca Signorelli's paintings to date. Each scholar has museum expertise and each possesses an observant eye for stylistic and technical details, ideal qualifications for producing a complete catalogue of an artist's works. The strong point of this book is the text, which is accurate and written so well that it is comprehensible to both the scholar and the general reader. Whereas both authors contribute to the first two sections, the catalogue, which fills nearly half of the book, is largely the work of Tom Henry. Professor Henry is thoughtful and meticulous in his work. He has viewed every painting first hand to give each work careful attention.
The book is arranged as a typical catalogue, with an explanatory text followed by a chronological survey of the artist's works. The first section contains five chapters that record the major episodes of Signorelli's career, divided more or less by decade. Each chapter is followed by endnote documentation. The general overview is followed by twenty-two full-page (sometimes double-page) color plates, also arranged chronologically, that highlight Signorelli's major works. The last two sections consist of a complete catalogue of Signorelli's paintings with black and white images and a general bibliography. The authors list one hundred and forty-eight works, including autograph works, collaborative pieces, and paintings begun by Signorelli but finished by others. The authors also introduce twenty-three paintings not found in any previous Signorelli catalogue; they list eight works of uncertain attribution; and they reject sixty-four works. Selected drawings are included alongside paintings to which they relate.
Any weaknesses in the book lie in layout and design. The publisher was generous with color plates. However, the designer and authors must not have discussed the choice or placement of the 39 high-quality, full-bleed details of paintings interspersed throughout the opening pages and the five overview chapters, for they are not necessarily placed near text that discusses them. Each chapter is preceded by a color detail on the left and a white page with a chapter heading on the right. Although the details are taken from works discussed in the chapter they accompany, they may have no relation to their facing text, are never cited in the text, and often do not illustrate the authors' points. A few photographic diagrams in the catalogue section reconstruct the possible arrangement of various parts of mutilated altarpieces. One photograph gives a partial sense of the total space in the fresco program at Orvieto, Signorelli's acknowledged masterwork.
Both authors keep Signorelli's importance in his own day in the forefront of their passages as they point out his major contributions to Italian Renaissance painting. The superb scholarship and accessible text of Henry and Kanter should help raise Signorelli from his undeserved relative anonymity to the prominent position he held in the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Nonprofit Boards That Work: The End of One-Size-Fits-All Governance
ASIN: 0471130206 |
Book Description
Any nonprofit that wants to survive beyond the nineties had better be governed by an effective, flexible board of directors. But what role should a nonprofit board play in fulfilling the organization's mission? How should the board carry out its responsibility to see that funds and other resources are used in the most efficient possible manner? How can the board perform its duties without alienating staff members? What pitfalls can divert a nonprofit board from addressing critical board functions?
Nonprofit Boards: Roles, Responsibilities, and Performance answers these questions and many more. This practical guide is dedicated to helping nonprofit board members, chairpersons, and executive directors develop and manage effective boards, empowered to respond to the special needs of their organizations. Diane J. Duca offers different ways to approach organizing and utilizing a board by presenting different board models. Using case studies and illustrations from real-life situations, she explores every aspect of board management, clarifies the roles of board members and executives, and discusses the board's legal and ethical obligations.
In her discussion of core responsibilitiesâstrategic planning, policy setting, fiscal oversight, and fund-raisingâMs. Duca focuses on creating a spirit of cooperation between board and staff. Nonprofit boards that successfully fulfill their obligations and perform responsibly inspire staff members and set an example for everyone in the organization.
Regardless of your organization's managerial style or the structure of your boardâpassive or active, entrepreneurial or averse to riskâthis invaluable guide will help board members and staff to develop mission-based policies, increase support, and improve communications between board and staff. Nonprofit board members who understand and accept their roles as trustees offer a vital service not only to their organization but also to society. Nonprofit Boards is designed to help them carry out this important duty.
"In my opinion, what was desperately needed from us 'volunteers' were resources, advocacy in the community, and hands-on help for a shoestring operation; instead, we acted like a judiciary body of advisors and critics."âLetter from a Former Board Member of a Nonprofit Organization
Too often, a nonprofit organization's efforts to fulfill its mission or use its resources efficiently are frustrated by an ineffectual, poorly defined, or adversarial relationship between the board and staff. Nonprofit Boards: Roles, Responsibilities, and Performance will help executives and board members avoid these conflicts with invaluable guidance and strategies for effective board management. Using case studies and real-life examples, it
- Clarifies the roles and functions of board members and executives
- Details board duties, including strategic planning and fiscal oversight
- Describes different organizational models for nonprofit boards and discusses their advantages and disadvantages
- Explains how structural diversity within the board can maximize its effectiveness and flexibility
- Discusses legal and ethical obligations and how the board can ensure that the nonprofit fulfills its mission
- Examines cooperative board-staff relations and how a board can be the catalyst for organizational change
- Includes numerous helpful charts and tables as well as in-depth appendices
- Presents contemporary issues facing nonprofits and their boards, including government relations, image-building, professionalism, and diversity
Customer Reviews:
Right on target . . . ........1998-01-19
I cannot imagine any development officer, who must expend enormous time, energy and resources recruiting, nurturing, and equipping board members, not wanting perhaps the best-written book on the subject now in print. Nonprofit Boards not only discusses traditional board models -- such as the "tripartite" system of board of directors, executive, and staff -- but suggests alternative models. In so doing, it gets us thinking: Is it okay to reconsider how we do things? Are there other approaches that would make us a more effective organization? How can board members be more effective in fund raising? Diane Duca, executive director of the Edmonds Alliance for Economic Development, writes from more than 20 years experience in the nonprofit sector. She has written is a practical guide to helping nonprofit board members, chairpersons, and executive directors develop and manage effective boards. Her ample use of studies and illustrations, drawn from real-life examples, makes this a practical, usable resource. Importantly, the author cites a 1994 survey of the National Center for Nonprofit Boards which reported that executives most often cited their boards' "lack of fund-raising capability and lack of commitment and involvement" as a major weakness. She points out that less than five per cent of the respondents cited fund-raising as a board strength. Duca hits this vital issue head on. Those of us in fund development will find her discussion right on target.

useful practical advice.......2007-04-24
This book offers useful, practical advice for the boards of medium-size non-profit organizations, or organizations transitioning from small to medium-size. It has sections on board recruiting and development, the various responsibilities of the board, the director and the staff, how to run an effective board meeting, and many examples of written documents, such as by-laws, that your organization can use as a model. It doesn't sound like it's written by a professional bureaucrat or a psychologist but by someone with a lot of actual experience as a board member.

Book Description
Nearly fifty years ago, the Bureau of Reclamation proposed building a dam at the confluence of two rivers in Central Arizona. While the dam would bring valuable water to this arid plain, it would also destroy a wildlife habitat, flood archaeological sites, and force the Yavapai Indians off their ancestral home. The Struggle for Water is not only the fascinating story of this controversial and ultimately thwarted public works project but also a study of rationality as a cultural, organizational, and political construct.
In the 1970s, the three groups most intimately involved in the Orme Dam—younger Bureau of Reclamation employees committed to "rational choice" decision making, older Bureau engineers committed to the dam, and the Yavapai community—all found themselves and their values transformed by their struggles. Wendy Nelson Espeland lays bare the relations between interests and identities that emerged during the conflict, creating a contemporary tale of power and colonization, bureaucracies and democratic practice, that asks the crucial question of what it means to be "rational."
Customer Reviews:
Great analysis of serious social problem.......1998-10-27
This is a wonderfully clear and thoughtful analysis of water politics. It should be read by anyone concerned about how we make decisions about water quality and quantity. The Florida Legislature, which as a group provided a ham handed approach to dealing with the Everglades and Native tribes, should collectively read this book.

Customer Reviews:
Great organizer for a first time mom!.......2007-09-23
This organizer is good at reminding me all the tasks I need to accomplish prior to my baby's arrival. I also love the registry items list. This is my first time as a mom and I admit, I'm a bit clueless of all the things I need. This book helps me identify the most essential items that I will need.
Great planner!.......2007-09-18
This is a great pregnancy planner/ journal. This is my first baby and I find the different sections about important questions to ask everyone from your doctor, insurance company, pediatrician, childcare all very helpful for a first time mom. The areas to record info from your doctor visits is great, too. I also like the section about what you absolutely need for your new baby and the "extras". Good little planner and I definitely like that the cover is very neutral and mod looking-- not all frilly. I do wish there were pockets on the front and back inside covers, but it's still a great planner!!!
No journal pages.......2007-09-15
I like the book. Lots of info and nice layout, only I wish there were blank journal pages to record certain events. Great check list for hospital and baby preparation.
Love the organizer!.......2007-08-31
Very neatly laid out. Great details that I might forget. Great sections. Cute design.
Great organizer.......2007-08-15
There is a ton of info you can record to organize now and even keep later as a momento. My only complaint: It has one clear page to store things. I wish it had flap pockets on the front and back cover or more than one clear page to store more items if you wish, such as sonogram pictures or other pictures. Otherwise, it is a fantastic organizer/planner!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful cookbook full of healthy recipes that really are tastey!.......2007-08-14
I have made many of the recipes in this book for my son who is now 1 year old and he has enjoyed them all. Most of the recipes are quite easy and not very time-consuming. There are many that are good for the whole family to enjoy. I love this book so much I am going to purchase a few others by this author.
Great Gift.......2007-08-09
I bought this for a friend who is expecting a baby and she loved it! She has a gluten intolerance so this cookbook will be very helpful for her and her husband. They loved it!
Great book!.......2007-05-09
I needed a baby food for dummies type book and this is one of a few I liked! Its very easy to use, has good explanations and so far seems to provide correct information with regards to foods to avoid, list of approved foods, etc. I like the charts that provide an at-a-glance for what is okay to feed, etc. Definitely worth the money!
Great ideas, but some are questionable .......2007-01-06
I love many of the meals in this book and they are generally easy to prepare (I love that many of them can be frozen), but I think some of the suggestions are questionable for small babies (for example a lot of tomatoes and onions). Otherwise, I love it and would suggest it to any moms interested in making homemade baby food.
Too meat intensive.......2006-11-09
We hastily bought this book for a friend and just as quickly returned it after taking a look at it's content. If you're still on the carnivor boat and wish to expose your child to the high dioxin and chemical load found in meat, then this book's for you. If you're a bit more informed and concerned about the contamination of meat, then look elsewhere for alternative nutrition and recipe info.
As a pharmacist, let me tell you that children are exceptionally sensitive to the chemical contamination that is in U.S. produced meat. This ain't the good ol' days and meat has changed. Be very careful where your animal products come from or consider eliminating them altogether.

Helpful!.......2000-11-15
This book was easy to follow and provided more practical information which I used throughout my pregnancy. I purchased other books for reference, but I read this one from cover to cover. I found the information was very helpful, especially for a first pregnancy. Buy and enjoy.
The information is good but difficult to find........1999-01-03
The book is hard to follow. It has only been useful in my last month of pregnancy. The way the book is structured does not permit you to get ready a little bit every month which was my objective in purchasing this book.

A Southern Star For Maryland: Maryland and the Secession Crisis
ASIN: 080186724X |
Book Description
George William Brown was the mayor of Baltimore during one of the most dramatic and violent incidents in the city's history. On April 19, 1861, the sixth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and Pennsylvania troops -- about 1,700 soldiers answering President Lincoln's call to defend the federal capital -- arrived at Baltimore's President Street station east of the harbor on their way to Washington, D.C. As they made their way across Pratt Street to board the southbound train at Camden Yards, the soldiers were attacked by a mob of nearly 5,000. When the fighting was over, 21 soldiers and citizens were dead and more than 100 were injured -- the first blood spilled in the Civil War.
First published by Johns Hopkins in 1887, Baltimore and the Nineteenth of April, 1861 is Brown's thoughtful, very personal memoir of those eventful days. Along with his dramatic account of the Pratt Street riot, he describes Lincoln's suspicious "secret passage" through the city on the way to his inauguration earlier that same year. He tells of rumors, plots, and increasing tensions and divisions after Southern secessionists fired on Fort Sumter. Brown also explains his attempts to quell the April riot, protect the federal troops, and prevent further violence (even justifying his order to burn the railroad bridges north of the city to halt the arrival of additional troops in Baltimore). A fascinating, eyewitness account of a bloody incident that fueled passions both North and South, this historic volume returns with a new introduction by Kevin Conley Ruffner.
"The fight which occurred in the streets of Baltimore on the 19th of April, 1861, between the 6th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers and a mob of citizens, was... memorable because then was shed the first blood in a conflict between North and South; then a step was taken which made compromise or retreat almost impossible; then passions on both sides were aroused which could not be controlled." -- from Baltimore and the Nineteenth of April, 1861

Book Description
Our knowledge of the origin and early evolution of birds has exploded in the past ten to fifteen years. In the 1990s alone, scientists became aware of approximately three times more species of early birds than were previously known, marking the first 85 million years of avian development as a period of remarkable species diversity. Assembling work by an international group of renowned scientists, Mesozoic Birds: Above the Heads of Dinosaurs is the most authoritative and up-to-date source on early avian evolution currently available. This unique resource provides a comprehensive examination of the known fossil record and is also an unparalleled guide to the fast-paced developments in current research.
Mesozoic Birds: Above the Heads of Dinosaurs covers a wide range of topics, including discussions of avian origins, the fossil record of feathers and footprints, bone histology, and locomotor evolution. Controversial taxa such as Protoavis, Caudipteryx, and Mononykus receive special treatment. But the heart of the volume presents the anatomy, relationships, and paleobiology of the undisputed Mesozoic aviary. Some of the book's most exciting features are the new definitive descriptions and illustrations of taxa that previously have received only brief notice, such as the alvarezsaurid Shuvuuia; the enantiornithines Sinornis; Eoalulavis, Vorona, and Patagopteryx; and the hesperornithiform Enaliornis.
The origin of birds and their relationship to dinosaurs continue to be hotly debated among paleontologists, ornithologists, and evolutionary biologists. This cutting-edge reference will become an essential resource for those interested in this debate and in the many other fascinating topics relating to the evolution of the earliest known birds.

Mesozoic Birds: Above the Heads of Dinosaurs.......2002-12-21
Mesozoic Birds: Above the Heads of Dinosaurs edited by Luis M. Chiappe and Lawrence M. Witmer is an astounding book on the evolution of birds. In the 1980's and 1990's there have been fossil discoveries that can link the development of birds for eighty-five million years.
This book is written by thirty-one authors as they have written abstracts on some very interesting finds and connections. This book is NOT a childrens book as the authors are writing for students and professionals in the field of paleontology. There is a lot of comparative anatomy and phylogenesis, morphology and systematics in this book. If your looking for the current information on the link with birds and the dinosaurs, this is the book that will convince you that they did exist together.
The contents of this book is divided into four parts, each with abstracts for chapters. These parts are as follows:
Part I: The Archosaurian Heritage of Birds
Part II: Taxa of Contriversial Status
Part III: The Mesozic Aviary: Anatomy and Systmatics
Part IV: Functional Morphology and Evolutions
The greatest percentage of the book is in part three where with all of the recent discoveries locks in the theory that birds were flying in the time of the dinosaurs. If your are into learning some interesting information on the origin of birds than this book is for you. If you were wondering about the connection between the dinosaurs and birds, again this is the book for you. This is a very techical book and is written for older readers looks for current theory along with knowledgeable erudition.
The writing is very technical, but it is easily readable and the information is priceless.
