The Unknown Gertrude Jekyll
ASIN: 0810911582 |
Book Description
This information-packed book by an experienced art teacher covers two important aspects of drawing the human figure — anatomy and perspective — that are seldom treated within the same book. With the help of more than 90 illustrations, the author demonstrates a number of the principles involved in figure drawing.
Customer Reviews:
You cannot teach anatomy in 96 Pages .......2004-06-29
"Anatomy and Perspective: Fundamentals of Figure Drawing" by Charles Oliver: a DOVER book
Some people might be induced to buy an anatomy book that devotes a mere 96 pages to the subject of human anatomy for the artist. Moreover, if anyone could accomplish this, perhaps we could expect DOVER PUBLISHING to be able to do it. However, this is not ONLY a book about Anatomy, but also presumes to instruct in Perspective, and the "fundamentals of figure drawing" also. So it's 96 pages divided 3 ways.
Most beginner anatomy/drawing books will run to about 120 pages on the average. Books with fewer pages than that are just not going to be able to adequately teach the subject. What's the point of buying LESS, when you can get MORE for the same price?
The text fails to accomplish its task, giving only a brief and superficial, woefully inadequate instruction and cannot really replace some of the current IN-PRINT texts still on the market.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, in drawing instruction, LESS is not MORE. A book buyer need not pay MORE money to get a good book; BUT...the buyer does need to have a book that covers the subject thoroughly. It doesn't make much sense to buy a brief but cheaper book if you have to go back out and spend double that price to get a book that covers the subject well.

Customer Reviews:
Photographer's Guide to Shooting Model and Actor Portfoli9s.......1999-12-05
"There is more to successfully shooting and producing a model's portfolio than taking good photographs of people. It requires a combination of artistic talent, technical knowledge business and communication skills, basic psychology, and imagination." This first paragraph of the introduction to the Photographer's Guide to Shooting Model and Actor Portfolio tells photographers right up front that the business of portfolio work is not to be taken lightly. It's hard work. If you decide this is the work in which you want to be proficient, however, this soft cover book can be a definite asset to your library. The book covers subjects such as how attract clients and how to best serve and build a professional relationship with your client and their agency. Chapter two gives pointers on preparing the contract, " . . . the most significant piece of paperwork you can generate." A list is presented stating all the things that need to be discussed and put in the contract to protect yourself and your client. Along with this information pricing practices are suggested. Preparation for the shoot, the shoot and how to handle the film after the shoot are covered in detail. The use of props, posing and lighting and how to use each to best show case your clients are discussed in detail and generously illustrated. Lighting set-ups are diagramed with photographs showing the effect of each set-up. The last chapter is about the design, printing, packaging and delivery of the portfolio. Written in clear and concise terms, words are not wasted. Subjects, however, are covered thoroughly. If you had no other material but this book to refer to for your first portfolio shoot, I think you could successfully handle the job from start to finish.
This is an average book at best.......1999-11-26
This book is extremely weak in its photography and style. Pictures and fashions are dated, and creativity of poses and lighting makes for bland entertainment, or instruction for that matter.
It starts to show some glimmer of hope when it mentions how to pose hands and shows pictures of does and don'ts for posing them. But it stops short and doesn't offer much more (a little yes, but not much) for other parts of the body either. It never lends advice to subtle but important aspects of arrangements of posture or eye placement.
The good news about this book, is Amazon will take it back!

Not Helpful.......2005-09-29
The list of websites for finding FBSOs was next to useless. Hardly any of them were real websites. Some of the advice was useful but mostly it was a waste of time and money.
Middle of the pack.......2002-02-22
Pros:
- The writer has a laid back style that is easy to read and understand.
- The book covers most of the topics you'll need to know about when buying or selling a house.
- Some good examples are provided for problem scenarious and
"what if" situtations.
Cons:
- It doesn't appear as though a proper editing has been done. Some of the web sites listed are still in pure HTML code rather than in edited text. Furthermore, some of the software mentioned cannot be found on the included CDROM.
- The material is lacking in nitty gritty details.
For the price it's not too bad, but I should have spent my money on a book about buying instead of buying & selling.

A BOOK DESIGNED FOR THE DO-IT-YOURSELFER.......1999-04-13
This book effectively teaches a homeowner how to sell his house (or buy one) without the expense of a broker. It explains that a broker's job is small and can easily be performed by any person educated with the information this book provides. Included forms and documents, along with an excess of helpful tips, make this book very valuable for anybody who would like to sell their home (or buy one). The money you will save by buying this book is tremendous--you will save the commission of a broker. Depending on your house price, this can be an enormous fee! I highly recommend this book.

The chapters in this volume focus on parents' abilities and choices regarding investments in their children.
Customer Reviews:
SEAL of approval.......2004-08-16
The most important word in the title of this book is "inside." That is to say, this book is not written by some journalist or other who is merely writing about personal "observations" of the SEAL community. Nor is it written by someone who is offering idle speculation from the outside on what he believes the SEALS are all about. Instead, Gary Stubblefield has had a distinguished career as a SEAL himself, and there is no better qualified person to tell their story.
During my time in the Navy I had a few acquaintences who were SEALS. I had expected Special Forces types to be very pompous and always looking to start trouble and "mix it up" with regular sailors in order to validate SEAL superiority. The reality of the matter was quite different. The contact I had with these people surprised me as I found them to be very down-to-earth, soft spoken and not out to toot their own foghorn.
Stubblefield brings that same sort of insouciance in the present book. This is not a collection of exagerrated war stories, but rather a detailed explanation of what REALLY happened during sundry covert operations. He tells it like it is, both the glamorous attributes to being a SEAL as well as the not-so-glamorous ones. Stubblefield does not paint himself as any kind of war hero, but by the end of the book the reader cannot help but have an immense appreciation for his career.
The author does a very good job of painting a realistic picture of the SEALS; both their strengths as well as their weaknesses. He dispels rumors and myths about the SEALS and concentrates on projecting an accurate representation of what the life of a SEAL is like. Are SEALS one of the most elite fighting forces on the planet? Certainly. Are they invincible military demi-gods? No. Stubblefield presents many fatal examples of instances where higher-ups in the chain-of-command treated SEALs as the latter.
This book is highly recommended for anyone who wishes to have an inside glimpse at this prestigious organization. Also, anyone who has a general interest in Special Forces will find plenty in this book worth pondering as well. For anyone who has any intentions of becoming a SEAL himself, this book is a MUST read!
I made it!.......2001-11-28
I finished the book. (...). This book was difficult to get through, primarily because at least 100 of its pages are dedicated to complaining about what's wrong with the SEALS. What bad equipment they have, the political decisions in military appropriations, the lack of combat experience in commanders, the "ticket punch" syndrome of the military. None of these complaints are new and none are exclusive of the SEALS. If you have been in the military at all you have see all of it before. Some critisism is warrented and benificial. This book goes beyond that and made this reader yawn and turn a deaf ear after awhile. If the complaining wasn't enough, then the frequent reminders that the author had been on secret missions but could not talk about them certainly capped the book for me. I would have much preferred actual info on equipment, tactics, and training as opposed to complaints. Don't get me wrong, I am sure the author is an expert in his field and some of what he wrote was eye opening, particularly the Granada invasion.
Welcome and refreshing views..........2001-03-08
Cmdr. Stubblefield gives an interesting look into not only the SEALs but Special Forces in general. I often wondered while reading this book, why there wasn't just one special forces program rather than having each branch with their own program. No doubt egos and enmity keep the Armed Services from joining forces for Special Operations.
I appreciated his personal comment, about his training, his missions and his current life. Good read without the boasting and chest beating that readers have come to expect in this genre.
Format a tad disjointed, but ultimately enlightening.......2000-04-21
I have recently become interested in the SEALs, as their dedication, skill, and responsibility continue to astound me with every book I read; Mr. Stubblefield has provided us civilians an excellent understanding of who these people are and what they're up against (hostile or otherwise).
The book is written somewhat as a collection of notes discussing various topics regarding the SEALs... Perhaps I'm being overly critical, as I personally found this "style" to be somewhat confusing as topics would seem to wander a bit; but the format was quite approachable and well written.
Reasons why this is the best book around........1999-11-24
I have read several in the SPECOPs genre, among them the excellent works by Douglas Walker, and also by D.Marcinko. I thought I'd share some concrete reasons why this is one of the best book on the US Navy SEALS I've come across. Gary Stubblefield has written a well informed analysis of present day SEAL teams. He describes in detail the methods emplyed by the teams, and backs them up with his concrete experience in Vietnam, or with stories from his fellow SEALs. You are taken into the jungle to witness a SEAL ambush, or a ship takendown in Panama harbor. Stubblefield gives an authoritative assesment of present day SEAL strengths and weaknesses. His anecdotes and obvious experience gives an unprecedented complete view into the Naval Special Warfare community.
Book Description
The United States Navy SEAL Teams were founded in 1962, on the order of President John F. Kennedy, but they have a reputation as one of the best Special Forces units in the world. The U.S. Navy SEALS tells the story behind these Sea, Air, and Land (SEAL) specialists. It describes the full combat record of the SEAL Teams, detailing their organization, equipment, uniforms and insignia. Over 200 photographs and illustrations are included.

SEALs in full color..........2000-11-28
The Europa Militaria "US Navy SEALs in color photographs" is exactly what is claims to be... it is a wonderful full color record of modern Navy Special Warfare. While the text is very limited, the detail and quality of the close-up images speaks volumes. Of particular interest is the amount of space dedicated to gear and weaponry... military modeling buffs and miniature collectors will find it quite useful (at least I do).
Like many of the titles in this series, it is well worth adding to any collection on military uniforms.
