Spurred by grief, hope and pragmatism, architects, artists and others have envisioned myriad new looks for the site of America's greatest devastation. Imagining Ground Zero: Official and Unofficial Proposals for the World Trade Center Site compactly yet vividly documents more than 100 proposals that range from the utilitarian to the Utopian. Drawings and models by world-famous architects (including Tadao Ando, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaus and Bernard Tschumi) rub shoulders with work by obscure firms. The book opens with a capsule history of the World Trade Center and its neighborhood, a chart showing the various entities that have jurisdiction over the 16-acre site and a description of the design process as of Spring 2004. Proposals of finalists in the official juried competition are represented by clusters of photographs and succinct descriptions. The winning proposal for the memorial (Michael Arad and Peter Walker's "Reflecting Absence") and Daniel Libeskind's winning site plan are allotted more space, with brief summaries of the architects' various revisions and major critiques by the architectural press. Imagining Ground Zero also offers a sampling of entries to contests sponsored by The New York Times Magazine, New York magazine and Max Protech (an art gallery), as well as submissions received by other outlets, including the professional journal Architectural Record. Included are proposals for the master plan, the memorial and a transportation hub, as well as a few designs intended primarily as political commentaries. Grouped together, the entries' similarities become especially noticeable (for example, towers that entwine or otherwise abut one another). Lucid, attractively designed and copiously illustrated with 252 color photographs, the book offers a concise visual history of the most extensive design competition of our times. However, the lack of an index of participating architects makes Imagining Ground Zero less useful as a reference book. —Cathy Curtis

Book Description

The most highly publicized building renewal process in the world today-and the most significant survey of competing architecture designs since the international design competition for the Chicago Tribune Tower in 1922-is for the reconstruction of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan. It has inspired a multitude of designs and has engaged architects on a global scale in the re-imagining of the vacant 16-acre site.
Published in conjunction with Architectural Record, the most important architecture journal in the United States, Imagining Ground Zero documents not only the various competitions sponsored by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation but also the informal proposals sponsored by the New York Times, New York Magazine, and the exhibition at Max Protetch Gallery, as well as a selection from thousands of schemes submitted independently for the World Trade Center site and Memorial.
Among the key figures in contemporary architecture whose work is featured here are Coop Himmelblau, Peter Eisenman, Norman Foster, Charles Gwathmey, Zaha Hadid, Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, Steven Holl, Rem Koolhaas, Greg Lynn, Richard Meier, Eric Owen Moss, David Rockwell, Lindy Roy, Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos, Rafael Viñoly, and many others. With its exhaustive approach to these myriad voices in the discourse surrounding the World Trade Center site, Imagining Ground Zero is destined to become the canonical reference for this unprecedented event in world architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Copiously illustrated in color, beautiful album .......2005-07-11

Everything you need to see about the design proposals for the WTC site. It provides the visual aspect, that combined with "Up from Zero: Politics, Architecture, and the Rebuilding of New York" (ISBN: 1400060176), presents a comprehensive picture of who, what and when. Hundreds of illustrations showing also tech. details are beautifully printed in color on glossy paper on a very high level. They reveal brutally the shortcomings of proposals including the winning one and its evolution from the unrealistic wish that could not have been built at a reasonable cost (incl. the grim pit and gigantic free standing, enormously expensive spire for... coffee drinkers and directly in front of office tower windows) to its more feasible shape and surrounding changed (by others) so much that the overall plan stops resembling the winning proposal, as if the award was only a pretext to install the predetermined winner, and to have the actual planning done by others.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Design Solutions.......2004-10-17

The architectural designs for the Ground Zero space were imaginative and inspiring. This book treats the various solutions comprehensively and respectfully. The solutions fell into 3 catagories, a memorial for the greatest American tragedy since Pearl Harbor, a huge transportation hub, and the rebuilding of office, retail and residential space. This book displays unofficial and unrequested designs to each or all solutions. A favorite was Hani Rashid and Lisa Anne Couture's skyscraper which reminds one of interlocking links of chain, and therefore conveys a feeling of security. The memorial should be at or near street level to maximize public viewing, so the ones that were many feet underground were not appealing.

            5 out of 5 stars Superb Resource.......2007-09-23

Last December, we took our project non-profit, really easily, by affiliating with a fiscal sponsor (explained in the book.)

I found the book in February. Three weeks later, I wrote my first grant, depending a great deal upon the advice, tips and forms and charts in the book. Two months later the check came in. The grant was approved.

I can't say enough good things about the book. I've always thought this genre of books was for total novices... which I was, when I started reading this book, but after talking with people who have applied for grants, I discovered this book had really educated me to the point I knew more than some of them.

Since then, I've been working with a part timer grant writer, helping me to apply for more grants. The book has helped me support my ideas-- even straightening out the consultant I'm working with, when it came to my rationale for funding overhead costs for one project.

I know at least three or four other colleagues have bought the book at my advice. I think anyone doing NGO non-profit work would benefit from reading the book and using the approaches it suggests to better understand the process of fund raising, how foundations operate and think, and how to create proposals that will persuade foundations to make contributions to support your work.

Last but not least, there's a coupon in it that gets you a month's free subscription to a foundation database. That alone is worth more than the price of the book. You can't lose. Now, go out, buy the book, get some funding and heal the world. Good luck.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Resource With As Much or As Little Information as You Need!.......2007-01-28

As someone who writes grants on a regular basis, I found Waddy Thompson's book to be both a great refresher of the basics, as well as a deep resource for the more detailed information that a professional grantswriter uses regularly. The CD-ROM also has some great templates and research guides for the first-time grantswriter starting from scratch. The layout of the book allows for easy "flipping through" to glean as much or as little info as you need, and for easy review. Clean, light writing that gets to the point; overall, a terrific resource for anyone writing for themselves or an organization who is entering the sometimes tricky world of grants.

                  Book Description

The outbreak of World War II brought many changes to Britain's Brigade of Guards. The dress-parade units had always maintained a full combat capacity and made a relatively easy transition into a new unit, the Guards Armoured Division. The Guards landed in Normandy on D+4 and steadily fought their way across northern Europe.

Robert Boscowan was a tank commander in the 1st Coldstream Guards and had four tanks shot from under him. On the fourth occasion he was badly wounded and burned, making a difficult postwar recovery. The years after the war, however, also brought both business and political success, culminating in a 23-year career in Parliament. Boscowan's account of Britain's elite at war is based on his wartime diaries.

"Armoured Guardsmen" is a very good war diary memoir of life at the sharp end by a tank troop (platoon) commander of the 1st (Armoured) Coldstream Guards in WW2. Most of the book is as written at the time, with insert commentary and clarification added frequently to add perspective from the vantage point of later experience. Being an elite unit, some of the author's experiences are different from those of others (like Bill Bellamy, "Troop Leader", writing about the same period with 7th Armoured Division Desert Rats). The Guards were somewhat favored. Descriptions and a few photos of their unique Typhoon 60lb. rocket rail installations will be helpful to scale modelers planning to replicate this.

                    3 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2007-01-21

I was very much looking forward to the paperback Collins Bird Guide, but unfortunately the pages are crowded, the print tiny and cramped, and the binding does not allow the book to open completely. While the Guide may be exhaustive and accurate, it is neither satisfactory as a field guide nor enjoyable to read at home. Were the text less verbose and even conversational, perhaps a larger font could have been used. I had hoped for something analogous to Sibley, "Field Guide to Birds of Western North America", which has a clear layout and a binding that opens properly.

5 out of 5 stars The best field guide to any avifauna.......2005-11-09

This book emerged onto a highly competitive market already burgeoning with numerous field guides covering the region, most by renowned authors and many having benefitted from improvement over several editions. Quite simply though, this book won instant recognition as the best field guide available for Europe - and perhaps a model for field guides everywhere. Its authors are well known experts in their field having spent many years studying and publishing on the birds of the region. However, the key to the guide's success is the fact that so much more useful information has been condensed into a guide which is much the same size as existing books. The book boasts excellent illustrations, succinct text and handy maps, all presented on a the same page. Small enough to fit into a pocket (about the same size as the National Geographic guide) and cheap, it is a must for anyone visiting Europe. As one reviewer has already pointed out, it is indispensable in Alaska too - not just for Palaearctic vagrants, but for regular shorebirds and some residents. Don't hesitate!

5 out of 5 stars Standard reference for Western Europe (and lately Alaska!!).......2002-12-31

Excellent book with comprehensive coverage and high quality plates. Book production quality is also high. My edition is small enough in hardback to be a true "Field Guide" although I understand that a new larger edition has been recently published, if plate quality is maintained this edition will be an excellent reference. If you have questions about this text go to amazon.co.uk and read some of the reviews there. This book recieved the British Trust for Ornithology seal of approval so anything an amateur like me might add is probably superfluous. Excellent reference, nice plates and informative and accurate text

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful during my first visit to Europe!.......2000-06-18

This book help me a lot during several bird trips on my first visit to Europe in 1999. I have travelled in several countries. Sometimes with very keen birders, other times alone. It would be impossible for me to be in the field in conditions to identify so many birds, without this valuable book. Excellent pictures. It's my new standard on international field guides.
