Twentieth-century art history is not just a history of individuals, but of collectives, groups. Universities and colleges have had much to do with this through their support of artistic communities and creative interactions. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Bauhaus was known for this. In the 1940s, Black Mountain College became a leader in community-based visual art practice and education. And in the 1970s and 1980s, the Department of Media Study at the State University of New York at Buffalo was the place to be. It was there, in 1973, well before any other university had a program explicitly devoted to media art, that Gerald O'Grady founded a media study program that is now legendary. Artists--including avant-garde filmmakers Hollis Frampton, Tony Conrad, and Paul Sharits, documentary maker James Blue, video artists Woody Vasulka and Steina, and Viennese action artist Peter Weibel--investigated, taught, and made media art in all forms, and founded the first Digital Arts Laboratory. These Buffalo faculty members were not just practicing artists, but also theorists who wrote and spoke on issues raised by their work. They set the terms for the development of media art and paved the way for the triumph of video installation art in the 1990s.

The images and texts in Buffalo Heads bear witness to the groundbreaking events at the Buffalo Center for Media Study. The book presents not just a tribute to a famous media department finally receiving its due; it is a rich inventory of primary texts (many never before published), works that will improve our understanding of media, amplify our cultural memory, and offer a perspective on contemporary issues.

In a nutshell, this book had me cracking up non-stop! I read it on a trip to Europe. My plan was to sleep on the plane. I should have never brought this book then! It kept me up and kept a smile on my face. My neighbors all asked what I was reading, and I shared the book with them. It is GREAT!

It is a book based on the experience of professionals envolved with the information technology. The articles in the book do not have considerable theoretical information. So I recommend it to people who want to grasp a very, but rather well done, practical use of information technology in the public administration.

Selected this text for my graduate IT in PubAdmin class.......2000-10-20

I teach a graduate class in Information Technology in the Public Sector, in the M.S. in Public Administration program at a major university in southern California. I selected this text for my class because there are so few that cover as much territory in a text appropriate for non-technical majors. This text does a very good job of describing for current and future public managers many of the issues related to implementing and enhancing IT in public agencies and non-profits organizations. While at times, some of the articles lean a bit too much toward statistical research, overall this is an excellent text for a graduate Public Administration course. It covers the political dimensions of IT implementation, strategic planning for IT, cases studies of cities that are leading edge technology adopters, some basics of WWW implications for agencies, and a nice article on GIS. Considering the somewhat high cost, my only big complaint is that I wish it had also discussed in depth IT ethics for public managers, so that I would not have had to make students buy a second text for the class.

Good Book to start.......2007-01-30

The author gives a good introduction to the different ethnic groups in the US today. Differences cultures and approaches are discussed however I found certain mistakes (basically for the Hispanic segment). He generalized most of the population,, maybe it wasnt his intention but it's true. However, it is a good book for newbies. It helps you in you already are in the real estate business dealing with emerging markets today. I recommend it.

What 's a synonym for "incredible"?.......2003-02-15

I'm an emotional intelligence coach with an international clientele, not a realtor, but this book helped me tremendously. I would recommend it to anyone with a multicultural clientele or consumer-base. Concisely, and with great empathy, Mr. Lee describes cultures in a way that saves you reading tons of others books to get the same information. It saved me a lot of grief as I coached my first Pakistani client to know the difference between Pakistani and Indian, and explained to me why clients from certain cultures never seem to quit negotiating. Since emotional intelligence involves social skills, relating and empathy, it's crucial that I have a working-knowledge of how other cultures differ. One culture's "love of negotiating" is another culture's "pushy." One culture's "affiliative" is another culture's "not-sticking-to-business." And now I know not to cross my legs with a Middle-Eastern client. It's broadly applicable. If you have an international clientele, or do business on the Internet, you can't afford not to read this book. Really outstanding.

This is an incredible book to read, well worth your time and money.

The author goes into detail of what makes the various ethnic groups unique and how you can apply this knowledge to being able to deal with your clients and customers most effectively.

I would highly recommend this to anyone that would like to be more knowledgable about other cultures and their ways of life.

Unique and valuable information.......1999-11-28

This is a well-researched and insightful book for anyone in real estate, related fields or home sellers who find themselves doing business with buyers from outside the American culture. This book helps you understand people from other cultures and their beliefs as they relate to real estate. The author not only explains what multicultural people do differently but also the reasons behind their unique practices and superstitions.

I found the sections on beliefs and negotiation to be particularly valuable. I always wondered why some groups continued to negotiate after a purchase contract had been signed or which were lucky addresses -- now I know.

Also, the background information on people from Asia, Mexico, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe was extremely enlightening. Get this book if you have any contact with people from other cultures - it will save you not only time but frustration as well. It could also be useful reading for people in industries outside real estate which do business with other cultures.

Good For You.......2006-10-15

I wish I had a role model sit down with me when I was a young man and do something like this book with me. Now I am a young father trying to raise a son on my own because I tried to build a relationship on sex. I knew every fact and statistic there was and every one of them flies out the window when you are not morally grounded. Setting us "free" to our sexuality is the reason that divorce rates and diseases are climbing through the roof. Praise God I didnt catch an STD but many friends did. If your book changes one young persons life then it should be applauded. These comments from people that are educated beyond their intellect show why our nation is falling apart at the schools. My heart aches for the pain I have caused many women and for the pain many others will incur because of this attitude. The men also that try to do the right thing and still lose. Of all the pain and loss and mistakes in my life the only regret I have is that I did not wait until marriage. Sex is for a husband and a wife, period.

No Sex and the Teenager.......2006-08-17

In these modern times, books that promote abstinence are irrelevant to teenagers. Teens who are developing relationships need advice to keep them safe from the inevitable consequences of intimacy, not religion based abstinence. If the point of this book is to steer teenagers into early marriage before developing maturity and the skills to promote lasting relationships, the divorce rate, single parent rate and STD rate will continue to be unacceptably high.

What did they do to deserve this?.......2006-08-12

What have the youth of America do to deserve this weak, uninformed, factless, baseless attack on their self image and sexuality. I am completely against the idea of book-burning, but the entrie print run on this one should be reserved for use as ballast when sand is running low for filling sandbags.

Teach decision making, not guilt!.......2006-08-09

In a world where teens are exposed to a lot of sexual information and sexual stimulation, it does not help to attempt to control their behavior by preaching morality and attempting to instill guilt and shame. Early sex-negative indoctrination is not easily reversed and can impact later adult sexual relationships.

Books for teens should focus on responsible decision making, realistic appraisal of consequences, and endorsement of freedom to be naturally curious. Sexual feelings are not immoral, sexual thoughts are not sinful, and all informed sexual options should be carefully considered.

Sex and the Teenager .......2006-08-02

This is just another outdated abstinence book. Teenagers deserve more. They deserve honest relevance, not moralizing. They deserve sex positive treatments that relate to who they are and how they behave. This is totally irrelevant to today's teenagers, who are sexually active.

From the very start, the first person accounts of war in Mark Littleton and Chuck Wright's "DOC" bring you immediately into the experiences of life and death in the battles fought by American sons and daughters since World War I. Each account from a medic or from one of the countless souls saved by a medic on some foreign shore reminds you of the millions of soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen who have put themselves in harm's way to defend our precious way of life. From Marine Jerry Jolly's quest to find the corpsman who saved his life in Korea to Wheeler Lipes' courageous performance of an emergency appendectomy in the austere conditions of a USN submarine on patrol, these stories will stir your heart. The medics, corpsmen, and nurses measure up admirably, facing horrifying injuries and using their determination and ingenuity to save lives and comfort the injured as best they can in the chaos of combat.
