The worlds toughest little dinosaur returns in his seventh graphic novel as Gon allies himself with a trio of outlaw animals, braves the elements to climb a mountain, and protects an aged elephant from the animals that would prey on it.

5 out of 5 stars Walking through the Wild.......2002-09-21

In this edition of the Gon saga, our dinosaur tourguide takes us from the snowcapped peaks of Tibet to the acrid plains of the African Veldt as he goes on Safari. While it is in the same short story format that Gon readers will, no doubt, find themselves familiar with, one of the stories actually deals with more than perseverance and curiosity, holding pangs of sadness within it as it branches out to deal with the slightly touched venue of demise.

A short synopsis of the stories (without spoiling them):
Gon with the huge wise elephant is a tale that starts with the adventuresome Gon traveling with a herd of elephants in the middle of a huge storm. It slowly morphs into something more, however, placing Gon in the midst of an elephant's struggle to find its final resting spot, a cavern filled with the bones of other elephants. Though filled with some comical portions of classic Gon exploits, it is a bit more serious than most other portions of the book.
Gon and the bird's nest on his head finds Gon with, you guessed it, a bird's nest on the top of his head. Three chicks are living inside at the time, three riders in for the experience of their lives.
Gon and his wounded fellows pits Gon and some hardened animals against the wiles of an unfriendly, sometimes fire-riddened forest.
Gon climbs a mountain, the final story in the book, puts Gon up against an impossible seeming task, that of climbing a mountain with stubby, almost nonexistent, arms. Besides weather and the height, he also has some other woes, like that of a very unfriendly Ibex dancing on his head.

5 out of 5 stars Charming, engaging, and utterly entertaining........2001-06-29

For almost any popular art fan, the Gon books are a must, with a level of amazing detail that is unmatched in the comic book genre of any country. Gon on Safari continues Masashi Tanaka's reputation for artistic quality and the warped humor that makes his little dinosaur an engaging hero for all ages. These are books accessible to any language; there are no words, excepting the titles themselves. Language is unnecessary, as all the characters are either animals or Mother Nature herself. Gon survives, -- thrives, -- on a life that tips everybody around him into chaos. The natural order of things is turned upside-down as he bulldozes his single-minded way through the African Veldt, championing the occasional underdog, and unlinking the food chain as he goes.

Despite the fact that the character is a dinosaur that borders dangerously on the 'cute' side, Tanaka doesn't make the mistake of putting Gon in a Sanrio world. Predators prey, the vulnerable die, and even the best of animals meet death when it comes for them. Gon is the anti-Barney, hot-tempered, voracious, and unstoppable; Tanaka's meticulous pen depicts it all with real genius, and an incredible eye for detail that makes it no surprise that it can sometimes take weeks to draw a single page.

This volume contains the following stories:

Gon with the Huge Wise Elephant
Gon and the Bird Nest on his Head
        Gon and his Wounded Fellows
        Gon Climbs a Mountain

4 out of 5 stars More fun than a miniature Godzilla!.......2000-08-16

If you've never "read" a Gon book, get thee to a bookstore. I use the word "read" in quotation marks because the only words in Gon books are the titles. Gon is a delightful meticulously-rendered itty-bitty dinosaur with a bad attitude. Sometimes, underneath his scaled tough exterior, he's a big softy. My favourite tale in Gon on Safari is "Gon and the Bird Nest on His Head". While on a typical rampage, he knocks a bird nest out of a tree, and somehow ends up with it as a bizarre hat. The three baby birds who live in it are terrified, at first. After a while, they become accustomed to their new "tree," and begin to notice some fringe benefits.

The story may sound trite and simplistic, but seeing the art will change your mind. Masashi Tanaka is a master cartoonist. Each of his drawings must take hours, and sometimes even days to complete. He pays careful attention to even the most miniscule detail, and the end result is pure joy.

In today's business environment, information is the lubrication that makes the business machine run smoothly. When information can't flow freely and securely throughout a business, the resulting friction can slow productivity or even bring things to a complete halt. Now add new information management requirements such as compliance with government regulations, managing multimedia Web site content, privacy, increased security, etc. and things can quickly get out of control. That's why IBM has developed a set of solutions specifically designed to help small and mid-sized businesses (collectively referred to as growing businesses) manage information. In this book, popular technology author Jim Hoskins explores the enviable position in which growing businesses fi nd themselves today and the relevance of IBM's sweeping On Demand Business strategy to growing businesses. The focus then turns to the problems associated with controlling information in the growing business environment. You will likely see yourself in at least one of the "top five things that tell you it's time for content management." Finally, you will watch as three hypothetical growing businesses wrestle with specifi c content management situations and arrive at appropriate content management solutions such as integrated document management, digital asset management, and Web content management. To help you stay current, this book comes with your personal password for accessing the companion Web site which offers up-to-the-minute content management news, "More on the Web" links to expanded information, and additional resources.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2001-07-04

As a copywriter specializing in Real Estate I found this book to cover a lot of familiar ground. I didn't get any new information here, but I did find some of the statistics helpful, and it was helpful to see this information presented in a real estate specific format. I did condense most of the basic concepts in this book into a tip sheet for my realtors to help them write better listings, and any realtor who writes his or her own listings for advertising will find this book invaluable, especially the Appendices that give you ready to use headlines for different types of property.

Any one beginning to write ads for real estate will find this book an excellent starting off point.

                    Book Description

The "Ace" had become a new kind of hero by the time the skies became a primary battlefield during World War II--and the dogfights that ensued became more deeply personal than those on the ground below. These inspired paintings capture both the courage and tenacity of these men and their machines in more than seventy works, painstakingly recreated by artists in vivid detail. They tell harrowing stories of wounded Robert S. Johnson, tailed by a Luftwaffe full of deadly purpose--but without ammunition--and Germany's legendary Erich Hartmann, the first fighter pilot to down 300 enemy aircraft. Each painted by respected aviation art masters, including Stan Stokes, Robert Taylor, and Roy Grinnell, they are enhanced with archival photographs of legendary Aces and their planes and battles. It's an authoritative tribute to the men of the skies--and a great gift for any aficionado of aviation or military history.

4 out of 5 stars Good variety, good value.......2000-11-24

This book offers a good sample of paintings of famous aces or famous squadrons from a variety of artists. Some aces that are included are: Johnnie Johnson, Galland, Bader, Marseille, Hartmann, Boyington, Flying Tigers etc etc. Also included are some lesser known French, Italian and even Finnish aces. There are excellent brief narratives about the history of each subject to compliment the pictures. The styles of each artist soon become apparent and my preference is for the realism portrayed in Taylor's art work. Overall I think this book is good value for the price, especially if you have an interest in WW2 aviation.

This item is said to be published in December 1999, but its around already...

                    Some of the good news

                    - a new aviation art title out just in time for the holidays

                    - bright colorful reproductions of a bunch of air combat scenes

                    - fairly accurate paintings

                    - accurate text

                    - large format

                    - a nice mix of artists

(could have just as easily been a monograph but instead they spread it around a bit)

                    -nice paper

                    -price is not bad

                    -nice dust jacket art

-and the dust jacket painting is included in the book

The only Bad News: The LAYOUT-- it screams for justice. On a big book like this, the layout editors ran 2.5 to 5 inches of virtually every painting across the gutter. Some casualties in my copy included the nose and prop from a Stan Stokes P-40 and resulted in a single engine P-38 by Robert Taylor...

Not all hardcover books compromise the the art, some examples of how it might be done are the Wooton, Taylor, Young, Trudgian books by David & Charles or Vanwell, or Howell Press Aviation: A History through Art

This layout really bothers me, and the practice generally bothers the artists even more. Even if someone gave me three excellent reasons why its done, it would still bother me.

It is a pretty book, and some of this artwork isn't available in book form any where else.

                          Book Description

Constance Jordan looks at how Shakespeare, through his romances, contributed to the cultural debates over the nature of monarchy in Jacobean England. Stressing the differences between absolutist and constitutionalist principles of rule, Jordan reveals Shakespeare's investment in the idea that a head of state should be responsive to law, and not be governed by his unbridled will. Conflicts within royal courts which occur in the romances show wives, daughters, and servants resisting tyrannical husbands, fathers, masters, and monarchs by relying on the authority of conscience.

These loyal subjects demonstrated to Shakespeare's diverse audiences that the vitality of the body politic, its dynastic future, and its material productivity depend on a cooperative union of ruler and subject. Drawing on representations of servitude and slavery in the humanist and political literature of the period, Jordan shows that Shakespeare's abusive rulers suffer as much as they impose on their subjects. Shakespeare's Monarchies recognizes the romances as politically inflected texts and confirms Shakespeare's involvement in the public discourse of the period.

All the birds of Texas and most of those found in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana are illustrated here in 60 plates that show key features. Descriptions of 542 species, silhouttes, and comparisons of similar species help with accurate identification.

                                4 out of 5 stars Peterson's Birds of Texas.......2006-11-04

I bought this book to supplement Peterson's Birds of Mexico et al. for a trip to the Yucatan peninsula. My goal was to obtain color pictures of all the birds in Cozumel and the nearby peninsula of Yucatan. To be complete in this regard, one needs both North American Eastern and Western Peterson books and the Texas book and the Mexican book. On a bird-watching hike in the Yucatan peninsula I carried Peterson East, Texas and Mexico. The illustrations were almost complete as compared to a checklist of birds of Cozumel (Google). Peterson is very succinct and misses few field marks.

3 out of 5 stars Limited colour plates; good organization.......2001-01-14

For each bird, Peterson gives field marks, similar species, and where found (overall and within Texas) as the main information; the latter is useful for elimination. Where appropriate he also has sections for voice and nest. The emphasis on field identification is good, with additional sections showing, for example, silhouettes of accipiters, falcons, kites and harriers to show the differences.

However, many of the plates are black and white, or line drawings, and this is a significant drawback. For that reason I'd recommend John Tveten's The Birds of Texas instead, although it's not as handy out in the field, and has less coverage of casuals and accidentals. The organization of the Peterson is good enough that you might want to get both.

                                3 out of 5 stars A starter but not a stand alone.......2000-07-28

Range identification excellent but, although there is a 1998 date on the book, the names do not agree with current ABA nomenclature. Illustrations and descriptions are separated and minimal use of color limits the usefullness. When used for identification, range information is the most usefull. Not up to the standard expected in connection with the Peterson name.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not Great.......1999-06-16

This guide is good for identifying birds of Texas, the ranges are listed by their proximity to cities. There are no color plates, but the descriptions are pretty good. Would like to see information on feeding. I would recommend a supplemental guide (National Geographic 3rd Ed.) for additional information.
