Overlooked Masterworks of Architectural Renderings and Landscapes.......2007-01-14

Anyone familiar with the early work of Frank Lloyd Wright, his Wasmuth portfolio, and the architecture of Walter Burley Griffin will know Marion Mahoney Griffin's incomporable architectural renderings. Like Julia Morgan and Theodate Pope Riddle, she was an extraordinary woman in the very exclusive men's club of turn-of-the-century architecture.
Those familiar with Mohoney's architectural renderings will perhaps question the tall, vertical format of this beautiful production. However, there is a virtually unknown aspect of Mahoney's drawings; and that is her "Forest Portraits". These magnificent renderings of trees are one of the most significant and unfortunately unknown endeavors of American landscape art of the twentieth century, and to encounter them is a delicious and unforgettable jolt.
This book/exhibition catalogue is a beautiful and scholarly production. Marion Mahoney, like Bernard Maybeck, was unfortunately and unwisely overlooked in "The Arts & Crafts Movement in Europe & America" (Thames & Hudson), and Mahoney is represented by a rendering of her husband's work in "International Arts and Crafts"(Victoria & Albert), two major exhibitions of the international Arts & Crafts movement that toured American museums. Maybeck is only given a passing reference in both books.
For anyone with a serious interest in American architecture, American landscape painters, and particularly the Arts & Crafts movement, this little jewel is essential.

Fun With Grandchildren.......2007-08-23

Grandparents are always looking for fun activities to do with their grandchildren...This book and a giant box of chalk provide lots of hours of "togetherness" laughter and fun. "Squeaky Chalk" is a wonderfully simple guide for kids to draw many ideas easily- instant results with no frustration.

Charming self-help book.......2006-07-30

As an adult, I had fun copying the pages and learning a new style of drawing. The story and characters are charming and I plan on getting the other books written by Joy Sikorski.

Draw It and Then Learn More.......2000-09-03

This is a great book to teach children how to draw using simple shapes and lines. The step by step diagrams lead to fun animals, people and food, to name a few. There are even instructions for extras like trees and snow. Scattered thoughout the book are jokes, short stories, simple crafts, science and history facts, and even recipes, each relating to the drawings. All of these make this small book of 152 pages one that can be enjoyed by children alone, or with their parents, for 365 days and beyond.

The dramatic account of the last British bomber raid — the long-range attack on Stanley airfield that opened the Falklands War.

Before dawn on May 1st, 1982, a lone RAF Vulcan B2 bomber made its way towards the runway at Port Stanley airport. It was aiming to strike the first blow of Britain’s campaign to retake the Falklands. The flight was the culmination of a huge military effort and was the longest-range attack in aviation history. It was also the last time that the RAF flew heavy bombers into combat, before the old techniques and equipment were replaced with the digital, fly-by-wire, precision-guided weaponry of modern warfare.

When war broke out, the Vulcan was already facing retirement. The aircraft had to be completely overhauled, and the story of how a seemingly endless list of problems and unexpected difficulties was overcome is a story of true British ingenuity.

The mission came perilously close to disaster. Two Vulcan bombers took off in the late evening of April 30th to begin a twelve-hour round trip to the Falklands. Within minutes of take-off, the lead Vulcan was forced to turn back because of mechanical difficulties, leaving Vulcan 607 and her crew alone to undertake a mission. Vulcan 607 is the dramatic retelling of this singular mission. Using extensive interviews with the combatants, residents of Stanley, and military command, Rowland White has reconstructed the flight and its preparation in gripping detail.

Non-fiction sounding like fiction........2007-07-20

The Brits call it "muddling through." It's a variation on "the best laid plans" theme and it's a sort of a national persona for them.

In 1982, Argentina occupied the Falkland Islands and South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic, some 8,000 miles from the Britsh Isles. The true ownership of the islands is complex, with successive influxes of explorers from France, Spain, Argentina and the UK arriving and claiming the islands. From that neutral statement, it is, however, a case of squatters' rights that the Brits had a solid claim.

Cut to Argentina, where the current junta is trying to shore up its claim to govern with bread and circuses. The decision is reached that occupying Las Malvinas - as the Falklands are known to them - will stir up enough nationalistic pride to somewhat offset the arrest by night of dissidents and double-digit inflation. The junta counted on two things. First, the Brits weren't serious about defending the islands. Second, there was nothing they could do to defend them.

The bulk of this extremely well-wriiten and researched story is how the British military proved both conclusions incorrect. The Royal Navy dispatched on - literally - a moment's notice a rag-tag collection of submarines asnd amphibious assault vessels to take the islands back. At the same time, there were major concerns that Argentine air units stationed at the airfield outside Port Stanley could attack the fleet with long-range Exocet anti-shipping missiles.

Eliminating this threat required the airfield be disabled by cutting the runway with bombs. But, the nearest base that could be used to stage such a mission was Ascension Island, at 4,000 miles away, roughly midway between the UK and the Falklands. This was well beyond the range of the soon-to-be-retired V-Force of long range jet bombers and tankers. But, that force did have a notional capability to fly such a mission if a lot of things played out the right way

Vulcan 607 tells the story of how the mission was conceived, assets allocated and then executed. In essence, the plan involved staging a collection of bombers and tankers on Ascension Island, then launching just one bomber and a group of tankers at the Falklands. The mission profile entailed tankers refilling other tankers that refueled yet other tankers; all for the purpose of keeping that one bomber - Vulcan MH607 -in the air.

And, it worked. The single bomber reached the Port Stanley airfield and cut the runway with a string of bombs. It then refueled on the way back to Ascension Island - itself a nerve-wracking event as bomber and tanker sought out each other before one or the other ran out of fuel.

That's the bare bones of the story. The detail is much more tense and dramatic, with planes turning back with equipment failures, failed refueling and excessive fuel consumption.

White relates the story in a solid conversational style, encorporating good mix of official documents and personal recollections from participants. If there is a flaw in the book, it is that the post-mission events are treated in a cursory manner. But then again, the book is about the mission not the war itself.

Big Bombs, Brave Airmen.......2005-03-02

This is a wonderful book for those who are seriously interested in the evolution of the famous bombs designed by Barnes Wallis for the Royal Air Force during WWII. The author has exhaustively researched and carefully chronicled a very comprehensive look at the challenges faced by Wallis, the RAF leadership and the incredibly valiant and intrepid men who designed, tested, built, armed, loaded and flew these unique weapons into the Third Reich. The reader will come to much more fully appreciate the superb qualities of the Lancaster bombers, as they become central characters of the story. The frustrations and dangers of trying to put ever larger bombs, ranging from the 4,000 lb "Tallboy Small" to the 22,400 lb "Grand Slam," into an aircraft designed for much smaller bombs, and then getting precise release mechanisms for accurate bombing make for compelling reading. The narrative brings a very human face to the aviators, their adversaries and the many other characters who have parts to play. Personal testimony is at times humorous, always exhilarating and frequently profoundly sad as the aerial raids and raiders are described in harshly real terms. The long and exceptionally dangerous raids to sink the battleship Tirpitz and the breaching of the Mohne and Eder dams are of particular interest and are detailed exquisitely. This is a book that will complete the knowledge of those who know something about these events, and its place of honor on the bookshelf of the student of WWII flying history is absolutely assured.

Not what I expected.......2006-05-18

Half of this book is about a modern RAF crew recreating the famous Dam Buster Raid of May 1943. There are many photographs, some of them color, but the sections of modern recreation are rather annoying. I didn't manage to finish this book and I'm looking elsewhere for a decent book about the subject.

Good resource.......2002-08-11

As with other Stokes books, this one is quite a good reference. Lots of nsights in attracting wildlife, specifics on prefered plants, etc. A good book to have on hand when landscaping or planting new gardens.

I hate to say anything bad about the Stokes, but..........2002-01-30

This book was a disappointment. I think it represents a classic example of a publisher using established authors' names to crank out a nice looking book that contains very little in the way of useful information.

The book has only 95 numbered pages to begin with. The first five of those are -- get this -- the title page, a page listing other Stokes publications, another title page. the publisher's information page, and the table of contents.

Okay. That leaves 90 pages for content, right?

Not really. The last 31 pages are given over entirely to glossy, full color bird identication photos. And approximately one third of the remaining pages are also devoted to pretty bird photographs. The book is almost entirely "boiler plate", in other words. What content there is is fine -- there just isn't much of it.

If information is what you want, get _The Bird Garden_ by Stephen Kress (The Nation Audubon Society) instead. It's much better.

Great for beginners.......2000-04-06

This book is a wonderful starting point to help you learn about bird gardening. It starts with the four basic needs and then explains in a clear and simple fashion how to meet these basic needs, as well as other considerations. The book also has a small picture glossary of the most common birds and their "bio". This book is very well written, has charts that are easy to follow, full of gorgeous color photographs, and though they keep it short, it's crammed with helpful info!
