5 out of 5 stars Superbly illustrated with color photographs of each bridge.......2002-02-06

Wooden covered bridges are found all over the American northeast. The first covered bridge built in the United States was over the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania still remains the state with the most surviving covered bridges in the country. Now in a completely updated and expanded second edition, Pennsylvania's Covered Bridges: A Complete Guide is the collaborative effort of Benjamin and June Evans. Criss-crossing the length and breadth of Pennsylvania, the authors visited every one of the 221 remaining covered bridges in the summer of 2000, taking new photographs and noting changes that had taken place since 1993 -- the year they published their guidebook's first edition. An indispensable guide for anyone wanting to tour these historical structures, Pennsylvania's Covered Bridges is superbly illustrated with color photographs of each bridge, while the text provides location and historical data, along with a succinct one paragraph description.

3 out of 5 stars A Better Guide than Last One.......2001-08-15

This new edition is a much improved version of the previous edition. Contrary to another review here, I still do not find the directions that good. While they are much better than the last edition, they come no where close to as good as the Barna book on bridges in Vermont. I have used this book to track several bridges and found distances listed can be off by as much as 2 to 3 miles compared to the book. Still it is an improvement and you don't need to have township maps of the whole state anymore.

5 out of 5 stars A First-Class Guidebook to Pennsylvania's Covered Bridges.......2001-08-04

This new and revised edition of the 1993 publication has expanded text and very precise directions for locating every one of the remaining 221 covered bridges in Pennsylvania. This is a "must have" volume for the serious "bridger." The authors revisited every one of the bridges taking new photographs, accurate measurements, and noting specific changes that have taken place since the first edition. This new edition also displays every bridge in full color.

3 out of 5 stars A Fair Guide for Bridge finding in Pennsylvania.......1997-07-20

This book gives a good bit of detail and history about Covered Bridges in Pennsylvania. The types of structures is very well covered. However, the directions to finding the bridges are difficult to follow. The authors rely heavily on township designations and township route numbers to pinpoint locations. I recently used this book to find several bridges and found the directions here could get me close but township route markers are not always available, it is difficult to get township maps for every township in the state. I had to rely on road markings such as: Low weight limit signs, narrow bridge signs, and low speed limit signs on the roads the bridges were located

    Book Description

From antelopes to zebras, the A-to-Z of creatures inhabiting these lively pages are lovingly depicted by ten gifted wildlife artists who reveal their carefully developed techniques for achieving remarkably realistic animal art.

Emphasizing the all-important details of rendering wildlife, the book devotes separate sections to animals' eyes, whiskers, beaks, fur, and so on. Sketches, studies, and reference photos used by master painters show just how their bird and animal portraits evolved into magnificent finished works in watercolor, gouache, oil, pastel, or other mediums.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars very nice and inspiring artwork but not enough detail about techniques used.......2006-07-25

this book only brievly describe the techniques used and sometimes what medium was used is not even mentioned. This is a nice book for the artwork, but as a teatching tool, it is not the book to buy. There are a few useful tips and a rough explanation with visual on how a mountain lion with cubs painting was done, but all we see from that is the 3 main step of that painting. Most exemple don't even go there and only have a bit of text explanation.

5 out of 5 stars more Wildlife Painting.......2006-07-10

Beautiful art work , alot of helpful tips on how to get the right look with hair/fur . A great gift even for children to peak their interest in art .

Universities are increasingly being asked to play a greater role in their communities. With the growth of the technology industry and the increasing importance of the Internet in education and everyday life, academic IT departments are beginning to form partnerships with both non-profit and for-profit organizations in the local community. These partnerships can relate to the whole curriculum, to specific classes, to students internships, to theoretical research, and to industrial research, and there are many other possibilities for IT/Community partnerships. Managing IT/Community Partnerships in the 21st Century explores the various possibilities for partnerships between academic IT departments and community-based organizations.

In their efforts to effect positive local change, universities have long been directly involved in shaping the community agendas of their local milieu. The same is now becoming true as it relates to improving the local technology landscape. Universities are natural partners in community development efforts given the human, intellectual and financial resources they can bring to bear on problems. They are also logical partners in community IT initiatives for these same reasons, and in recognition of the educational and technological resources resident on their campuses. "Mangaging IT/Community Partnerships in the 21st Century" is perhaps the first comprehensive examination of the critical considerations for community-university partnerships involving information and communications technology. From course partnerships to educational and business partnerships to the so-called "digital divide," this book is a must for community practitioners and university researchers alike!

                        Book Description

An expert in alternative medicine gives you the rundown on what works, what doesn't--what can help and what can harm you. In this comprehensive yet user-friendly volume, Dr. Barrie Cassileth covers over fifty alternative and complementary therapies. Briefly, but thoroughly, she shows the reader how to evaluate everything from acupuncture, flower remedies, hypnosis, and enzyme therapy to homeopathy, acupressure, aromatherapy, naturopathy, and crystal healing. In clear, nontechnical language, the origins of each therapy, the reasons practitioners say it works, the scientific evidence, and the places to go for treatment are all examined. Dr. Cassileth includes methods that might have no scientific basis but seem to work and forthrightly warns against those that may be dangerous to your health. Arranged alphabetically by type of therapy, with illustrations throughout, The Alternative Medicine Handbook is your guide to safe alternative therapies. With alternative medicine being incorporated by mainstream doctors and managed-care plans into the care of their patients, consumers need The Alternative Medicine Handbook, an objective source that will tell them what the therapies are and give them sound advice about their use.

                        Customer Reviews:

                        5 out of 5 stars a GOOD book on alternative/complementary medicine.......1999-12-17

As both a scientific researcher and a cancer patient who has greatly benefitted from mainstream medicine, about the last thing anyone would expect me to do would be to endorse a book on nontraditional medical approaches. However, I found this book to provide a comprehensive and critical evaluation of the science behind several alternative and new-age approaches to healing. It covers everything from acupuncture to Zen philosophy and discusses the scientific studies that have been conducted to determine whether various approaches actually work (she also devotes several pages to the placebo effect).

As a scientist, I am very critical of "pop science", "miracle cures" and unproven alternative medicine. I also know just because something is published in a book (or on the internet), there is no guarantee that the information is accurate or true. However, I trust Dr. Cassileth's professional credentials. In addition to the professional history mentioned in the editorial review, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (one of the top cancer centers in the country) just opened a new department of Integrative Medicine devoted to "addressing the body, spirit and mind" and Dr. Cassileth was made the head of this new department.

Despite the title of the book, much of the book focuses on complementary (rather than alternative) therapies that can help patients get through physically and psychologically difficult medical treatment (such as cancer treatment). She also debunks several trendy but scientifically invalidated or unvalidated cancer treatments. She also discusses the potential dangers in the lack of regulation of the herb and supplement industry, while pointing out which of the herbal remedies and vitamins have been shown to have some health benefits.

The book is written for the nonscientist, which means that the info is accessible and easy to understand. Science junkies like myself may be left wanting more info on mechanism, and I was quite disappointed by the lack of a reference list citing the various studies of alternative/complementary therapies that have been published in scientifically credible journals.

Anyway, if any of you are interested in complementary therapies and ways to reduce stress in your life, I highly recommend this book. I think it's one even your doctor would approve of :-)

5 out of 5 stars Great Basic Resource for Alternative Medicine Users.......1998-01-12

This is a believable, well--researched book about the growing field of alternative medicine. Its a great book to have as a "second opinion" when one is considering going outside of traditional medicine to seek treatment or cure for medical and heaslth problems.

In this seminal work, historian Spencer Weart analyzes every recorded instance of conflict among democracies and comes to a remarkable conclusion: democratic republics have never gone to war against one another. Though he is not the first to present this theory of "democratic peace," the depth and breadth of his research sets Never at War apart as a work of singular importance.

To present as scientific a study as possible, Weart meticulously defines various forms of government in order to present a working model of democracy. He defines a republic as a community in which political decisions are made by citizens with equal rights, then divides republics into two camps: democracies, in which at least two-thirds of adult males can make political decisions, and oligarchies, in which one-third or fewer males hold political rights. Working within these parameters, he finds that "republics and only republics have tended to form durable, peaceful leagues." Taking his point further, he asks, "When states avoid war so thoroughly, can that be a mere accident, or is there some deeper reason? If a general reason exists then we may already have at hand, in peaceful democratic regions like Western Europe, the blueprint for a solution to the problem of war." Such a solution is both his hope and his conviction.

As he illustrates with copious historical examples, governments tend to transfer their internal political structure outward, so that they deal with other nations as if they were operating from a similar set of rules--a kind of diplomatic "do unto others" approach. When republics are dealing with one another, negotiation and compromise are used instead of war. When two different political regimes are in conflict, however, no similar ground rules apply, and war becomes much more likely. To back up such claims, he relies on a wealth of evidence that stretches from ancient Greece through Renaissance Italy and into the mid-1990s, including an appendix that details nearly every meaningful skirmish between "approximately republican regimes" over the past two millennia. Impressive in scope and powerfully convincing, Never at War is an effective tool for waging peace. --Shawn Carkonen

                        Book Description

This lively book reveals a remarkable-and tremendously important-finding: fully democratic nations have never made war on other democracies. Furthermore, says the author, they probably never will. He analyzes for the first time every instance in history of a democracy confronting another with military force, from ancient Athens to modern America, and offers practical advice to ensure future peace.

This is a well written and thoughtful analysis of the "democratic peace theory" argument. A number of political scientists have argued that one of the few empirically established truths of international relations is that democracies do not war on each other. This idea was actually suggested by the philosopher Kant approximately 2 centuries ago, a prediction that has turned out to be somewhat surprisingly correct. Weart opens by reviewing the political science literature on the democratic peace theory, concluding that it is valid. Most of the book is devoted to exploring why this phenomenon exists. Weart's conclusion is that the domestic political culture of a nation's leadership is responsible for its approach to international relations. Republican states, especially established democracies, have cultures of compromise, accomodation, and respect for dissenting views. These cultural traits carry over into international affairs. Conversely, authoritarian states, whose leadership usually arises in an atmosphere of ruthless competition and repression, will tend towards more aggressive and inflexible modes of international conduct. This brief summary doesn't do justice to Weart's systematic presentation of his argument, which is based on an unusually thorough review of the historical and relevant political science literature. Weart points to some unexpected and predictable consequences of his formulation. For example, in addition to finding that democracies don't war with each other, he finds as well that oligarchic republics, which have some of the same political culture as democracies also have a low rate of mutual warfare. Also, democracies and oligarchic republics also have a tendency to form unusually successful/stable alliances, in contrast to authoritarian states. Weart is careful to specify that he is not arguing that democracies are intrinsically peaceful, pointing in particular to a number of examples from American history. Weart's last chapter, which is on spreading democracy, turns out to be quite topical. Given the advantages of peace to democratic states, he discusses ways in which democracy can be spread. He makes a good argument that direct military intervention is usually a relatively poor way of spreading democracy. Weart's book was published in 1999, well before the current Iraq mess.
My only criticism is that I wish Weart had presented some of his data in tabular or numerical form.

                                  Book Description

Praeger, in collaboration with the distinguished International Center for University Teaching of Jewish Civilization, Jerusalem, and in association with Israeli's Open University, has undertaken the publication of this multi-volume series. Binah brings together for the first time in English seminal articles in Jewish history, thought, and culture. This landmark series, edited by Joseph Dan and under the general supervision of Moshe Davis, will provide resource materials for students enrolled in courses in Jewish studies, religion, history, literature, sociology, cultural anthropology, and philosophy. Binah includes topics from the Biblical period through the 20th century. Each volume of articles is approximately 300 pages in length. An introduction explains the criteria for selecting the articles and indicates their contribution to Jewish history, thought, and culture. The articles, not previously translated, are adapted from their original Hebrew sources in order to make them more accessible to the undergraduate reader, but the editors have made every effort to remain faithful to the intent of the original authors. Each article is preceded by a statement that indicates the original source, a brief biographical sketch of the author placing the article within the framework of his life-work, and the name of the translator/adaptor. The series is bound in both a hardcover library version and in a loose-leaf format, allowing the instructor maximum flexibility in utilizing the materials. By special agreement, purchasers acquire the right to make copies of the articles for student use. Thus, instructors can virtually build a package of readings for their students.

                                  Book Description

There are no state-specific books on how to appreciate birds and learn more about them. Like gardening, bird watching is a regional hobby, and the birds that frequent the backyards of Missouri differ from the birds found in Michigan. This series targets beginning and intermediate bird watchers from each Midwestern state.

The books are state-specific and highlight the birds that are found in each state. In addition to the profile, each bird entry includes a map to identity the specific range covered by the bird.

100 birds are presented via full-color photographs for accurate identification.

Full-color seasonal section informs the reader of: the migrating birds that can be seen that month, the foods that attract those birds, the plants that can assist in attracting birds.

Our partner, Bird Watcher's Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird varieties, bird habitat, feeding, and related outdoor topics.

I was one of the participants in the second edition of "The Atlas of Breeding Birds of Michigan" and counted a total of 44 birds on my assigned patch of territory. This book features 100 of the 'most commonly encountered birds' that can be spotted in Michigan (not all of them breed here). Most, but not all of the birds appear in color photographs (one notable absence is the red-breasted nuthatch).

Before the listings for the individual birds begin, "Michigan Bird Watching" lays out the state's ecoregions, followed by very useful information on bird watching by season.

There are all sorts of useful lists in this book. "Michigan's Ten Best Bird Watching Spots," a page of "Resources for Michigan Bird Watchers," and "Ten Tips for Beginning Bird Watchers" are some examples.

There is a chapter on feeding and housing birds, plus other tips for attracting birds to your property. In the "Nest Box Tips for Landlords," I was surprised to learn that perches by the entry into the nesting box are unnecessary, and may even attract predators.

Instructions on how to use this book precede the hundred bird listings. Each full-page listing includes a color photograph, and sections labeled, "All about," "Habitat and Range," "Feeding," "Nesting," and "Backyard and Beyond."

I've only seen ONE of the birds in this book's "Michigan's Ten Must-See Birds" so I've got a long way to go.

If I could have requested just a few more items in this book, they would have been: male/female and or summer/winter color differences within a species; and photographs of the species' nests and eggs. Otherwise this is an excellent, fact-filled introduction to Michigan birds.
