A wonderful book!.......2000-04-09

This was the first book I had seen with Uelsmann's work in it, and it blew me away. Including history of the photos, a look at Uelsmann's career, and quotations from the man himself, this book is both interesting and informative. "Twenty-five Years:A Retrospective" contains 140 masterpieces done by Uelsmann between 1954-1981. This book is a must have for photographers and non-photagraphers alike!

Guerrilla Hostage is the dramatic story of Ray Rising's kidnap and confinement in the jungle of Colombia, South America. On March 31, 1994 Ray was taken captive by guerilla terrorists.

Los Angeles Times journalist, Denise Marie Siino, relates Ray's story as told to her. Denise traces the history of Colombia leading up to the political climate of the years 1980 through 1996.

In October 1966 Ray and Doris Rising joined the Wycliffe team at the SIL center at Lomalinda to begin their ministry. Over the years Ray established a rapport with the Colombian people as he served the Wycliffe branch in roles of public relations and security. He worked with officials as well as with the common folk of Puerto Lleras near the Lomalinda Wycliffe base.

It was in Puerto Lleras that Ray was kidnapped by a group of guerilla terrorists. The book details his twenty six months of being held hostage in the South American Jungles. It is a testimony of Rising's faith in the midst of cruel and fear-provoking circumstances. Battling fatigue, loneliness, depression, and fear, Ray demonstrated God's love to his captors.

This is a testimony of God's working in Ray's life during physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual imprisonment. It is the story of God's comfort, hope, peace, and ultimate victory through Rising's release.

Although the story took place ten years ago, the message is timely, and the promises eternal. This is a book for every Christian. It should be in every church and Christian school library and on every church mission's reading list.

Touching True Story - captivating.......2004-07-13

About 12 years ago, I worked at Lomalinda, Colombia, where this story begins. I lived only a couple houses down from Ray and his family. I have been through the back gate, where he was abducted less than a year and a half later, after nightfall. It is dark with only one light over the gate itself. I remember thinking someone could easily hide in the trees and surprise you when you got off your motorcycle (the main transportation there) to open and/or close the gate.

This book brought back many wonderful memories and was very difficult for me to read because I connected with it quite closely. I was quite angry with the locals for not warning him when they knew something was going to happen - after all he had done for them - but then I remembered what it was like when I was there and that they could have lost their lives for telling him and then he would have been taken anyway - I forgave them.

I can attest that Ray is a wonderful man and has a wonderful family. I felt this book was written very well and captured many of the good and bad things about living in that country. We all got so used to the ever-present danger that we didn't really think much of things that were a little out of the ordinary. In this tale you are taken from the day before his kidnapping, through the event, back to the base and how they realized that he had been kidnapped and see his family struggle with the news, through his captivity to his eventual release.

I was very pleasantly surprised at how well this was written. Much of Ray's time was very boring, especially when he was not allowed to talk to anybody for long periods of time, but this book never drags. I am also quite amazed at how much Ray remembered of his time there. He eventually made friends with many of his captors and they even shook his hand and said goodbye to him when he was released. You will be swept along on this reluctant adventure; your hope in G-d restored; your belief in the goodness of men's hearts renewed and you will be strengthened in your own journey through life.

Also, when I first arrived in Lomalinda, Colombia I was handed a book called "Called to Die" by Steve Estes. I was told that if I really wanted to understand the place and people better and understand "what happened here" that I needed to read this book. I was so glad I did. I highly recommend it if you enjoyed this one.

A Story of Incredible Faith Under Incredible Stress.......2001-09-08

This is an amazing story of Ray Rising's 810 days of captivity by Colombian guerrillas. He is very candid about his struggles with boredom, loneliness and frustration as he was held hostage the entire time in crude shelters in the dense jungles.
Clear also is his testimony of trust in God to deliver him in the way His will would be best accomplished.
An inspiring story for all ages.

The Battle of Bunker Hill and the burning of Charlestown were the first major battles of the American Revolution. Brendan Morrissey describes how the sparks at Lexington and Concord ignited the smouldering resentment of the Colonists into the flame of a rebellion. Colonist militia were pitted against British Redcoats in a series of struggles which led the British to evacuate Boston and to George Washington taking command of the fledgling American army. He looks at the forces involved: the regulars of the British Army, the Royal Navy and the American militia and 'minutemen'. The opposing commanders are also examined and the book is laid out in order to clearly show each of the phases in this early part of the American War of Independence: Lexington and Concord, Bunker/Breed's Hill and the American siege of British held Boston. Finally, the author investigates the reaction in Great Britain, Europe and America to the rebel success.

This book had great visuals, but the writing just did not flow. I love learning about the Revolutionary War, but found myself bored with what was written. The book was quite brief so even though some points were tedious, it was a quick read.

How can anyone not love the Osprey series of books?

Whenever I'm researching a military campaign or would just like to know a more about what happened historically, I turn to the Osprey series of publications. They are well organized, written, and illustrated and provide the reader with state-of-the art maps and graphics.

This particular volume provides the essentials on the Battles of Concord/Lexington and Breed's (Bunker Hill). Author Brendan Morrissey covers the following:

Tory propaganda weakens an otherwise useful text.......2005-08-23

I bought this book at the Bunker Hill national monument recently, hoping it would fill in the gaps that David McCullough left out of his excellent 1776. Unfortunately, I finished the book only more desperate to find a book that not only solved my original dilemma but could also serve as an antidote to this one.

First, what the book is and what it is not. It is not a narrative of what took place in Boston in 1775. Instead, it is a sequential distillation of the military events of 1775 in and around Boston. To be fair, it is part of the Campaigns series so I should not fault it for not reaching for the same heights that McCullough did.

I would not have minded this approach, however, had the author been even remotely objective in his presentation of the known facts -- or perhaps even-handed, trading barbs against both sides. But, alas, Morrissey chooses to chide the colonists at every turn possible and to praise the redcoats for their forbearance and grace under pressure. It becomes laughable when page after page he continually defends the British taxes and the behavior of the British regulars while portraying the American leaders as having only profit motives for rebellion and the militia as misled rabble.

I am willing to hear of our own people's weaknesses: they are many. However, to fail to note that the other side was equally flawed in aspects of its approach grows wearisome after about page 10.

In sum, the book does have great maps and visuals -- the commentary on the etchings are first rate (except when they again accuse Americans of dealing unjustly with the British). I will keep the book on the shelf for reference, but will not recommend it.

Caiques.......2007-10-17

Ok, so I have been thinking of getting a bird for quite some time, and have been reviewing all kinds of books.

This book- the Complete Pet Owners Manual of Caiques, is absolutely wonderful. It goes into great detail about those wonderful little birds, everything from their mannerisms, to their diet, and their disposition.

Not only do I recommend the book, but also a Caique!

Good overall, but missed a few good points.......2006-07-09

In general, this is a great book for anyone looking to own a caique. The information is up-to-date and easy to understand. However, there are some things that were missed (and I would love to see this info in a 2nd edition someday).

First, under the section "Special Caique Behavior", the author forgot "hopping". This is a unique behavior that is often mentioned in almost every caique article out there.

Second, I would love to have read about the possibilities of owning two caiques. Do you have to get one of each sex? Or can two males and/or two females co-exist?

Third, I would like to have read about the different developmental stages they go through as they mature (dominance issues, hormonal issues, etc.) and at what age to expect them. Also, at what point do they lose their dark eyes and yellow-ish chest to reveal their adult coloration? This would help a buyer determine if they were really get a young bird.

Fourth, a section on breeding would be greatly appreciated, and needed, as there are very few resources for caique breeders to refer to. Photos of babies' physical developments, weight charts, feeding schedules, etc. would be quite helpful. I find caique babies more difficult in some ways to hand-raise than other species, and this info can really be of use to breeders who are new to this species.

Again, this book does have a lot to offer, but I do see room for some improvement. I would be very interested in purchasing a revised edition if it were to address my above-mentioned suggestions.
