The last decade of the twentieth century spawned a culture of week-end ranchers buying week-end "places" and decorating the interiors in "drug-store cowboy". "Ranch Deluxe", however, shows you what the real thing looked like, Partner.

For those of us who grew up on "Hop Along" and Gene Autry Saturday mornings at the neighborhood theatre, Rancho Deluxe is a voyeur's dream.

Motoring down the highways of the great Southwest, one occasionally glimpses an old ranch house in the distance. "Is there a soul so dead who never fantasized about life in that ranch house?" Rancho Deluxe welcomes the voyeur to step inside and have a look around.

Great Architectural History.......2000-06-24

This book is a wonderful history/architectural reference. I purchased this book as an interior design reference and although it does not cover interior design details the rich history provided by the author led me to want to read this book cover to cover. And what a beautiful cover it is- brown leather- makes this a great coffee table book. This would be a great gift for anyone interested in western architecture and home style. This is not one of those books that choses a certain western style and displays hundred of the same photograph-this book covers every ranch style possible. I will continue to reference this book for inspiration and ideas.

We here in Northern New England consider Richard Brown and his camera a regional treasure. I have been a devotee of his published photographic work since the days twenty years ago when his gorgeous photography would grace the covers of Country Journal, a magazine celebrating the glories of rural life, and that often used Brown's spectacular work featuring magnificently natural shots of life in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. Here brown focuses his talents and his camera to give us seven dozen spectacular photographs of various European gardens throughout Europe.

This book has a wonderful set of shots of quite breath-taking and beautiful gardens and garden scenes from all over the world. The settings vary, from the Cotswold's of Britain to the palace gardens at Versailles, from the gardens of Sissinghurst, to the rural background of Keukenhof. Many of the photographs are of lesser-known spots, but all are uniformly eye-catching and memorable, whether they are of a window box in the Swiss Alps or the stone walkway in the British countryside. The photographs are a superb representation of one of the foremost contemporary landscape photographers.

Brown's photographs are truly a contemporary equivalent of those timeless pictures produced by legends such as Eliot Porter. Richard Brown demonstrates a singular talent for capturing the beauty native to the gardens and for sharing that extraordinary beauty with the world. Enjoy!

A great book. Perhaps it's a little repetitive for those of us who have read it 15 times to our children, but at its heart this is an uplifting, joyful book. Try it - you'll like it!

If you're searching for a literary example of peer pressure, look no further than Dr. Seuss's subtly horrifying "Green Eggs and Ham." The "hero" of this tale, Sam-I-Am, spends the entirety of the book trying to force green eggs and ham upon a nameless skeptic. The "villain" turns down the offer several times, but Sam-I-Am persists, going so far as to follow him home in order to make him try the green eggs and ham. He uses several textbook methods of peer pressure, including the famous, "You'll never know that you don't like it if you don't try it." He refuses to respect the man's right to say no, and badgers him incessantly until he caves under the pressure.

What disgusts me most about the end of the story is that once the man tries the green eggs and ham, he loves them and is simply another addition to a pool of addicts. Dr. Seuss's tragic allegory for the rising drug use among young people that plagued his time period is brilliant, but certainly not appropriate for young children. Sam-I-Am is too easily twisted to become a hero, opening the antagonist's mind to new things, rather than a metaphor for Satan as I believe was originally intended.

In conclusion, do not read this book to your children unless you are willing to explain to them that people like Sam-I-Am should be avoided at all costs, and that they should never follow the path of the story's antagonist.

Dr Seuss is most definitely responsible for putting a lot of people off their dinner, and also for encouraging the experimentation with food coloring in a whole range of normal foodstuffs that probably did not need spectrum alteration in the first place.

Green Eggs and Ham.......2007-07-16

This book is great for all ages. This book is great for children who are just learning to read and who need help with rhyming. The book is small enough that a child can hold it themselves and don't have to worry about harming the book or dropping it.

The children's book entitled Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss does a great job of teaching young kids to try new things while increasing their vocabulary. The illustrations are very nicely done with hybrid "things" replacing people. These "things" are part human and part "thing"--great concept to stimulate a child's imagination! The text is written in easy to understand words so that with a little help your child be able to read this book independently soon.

The book tells a cute story of how a smaller "thing" or, "person named Sam" follows a "grown up thing" or, "person who is not Sam" around, beseeching them to try some food they've never eaten before, namely green eggs and ham. Happily, the food turns out to be delicious in the end. While the basic moral of the story is not to be afraid of trying new things; the child learns a lot of vocabulary and comparisons at the same time. Great!

Specifically, children learn the concepts of "here," "there" and "anywhere;" "like" versus "do not like;" and modes of transportation including "car" and "train." Excellent!

The book is nicely bound and the strength of the hardcover binding makes the book tolerate the bending and occasional carelessness of a young child who is learning to read partly by using this book. Great!

I highly recommend Green Eggs and Ham for younger kids who are just learning to read. This book will increase their vocabulary by introducing words, comparisons and pictures. The child gets encouragement to try new things; and the adorable illustrations will delight children everywhere.

Great job, Dr. Seuss!

What a great book. We have turned to it for pooh colors, temperature panics, the meaning of puke, sleeping, crying, eating, you name it. Funny and practical, and accessible to all but the most extreme thinkers on caring for children.

Everyone has got an opinion on how to be a parent and what is best for children, and from my experience the intensity of these feelings is right up there with religion or even - gasp - sport.
But Green writes in the introduction that he aims to "reassure parents to trust their own instincts and to do what feels right". Right on - he gives plenty of ideas on how to tackle things, but treats us with the intelligence to make good decisions for ourselves.

I guess this book won't suit parents who feel the need to equate parenthood with constant martyrdom. But for us it has been great. Good medical advice (again, won't suit the paranoid), fair, reasonable and fun parenting tips, everything drenched in common sense, and always with permission to go your own way. So many "problems" we thought we had with our kids have melted away with a few kind words from this book.

Brilliant advice on eating habits. Lots of love. Frequently untrendy. Suitably politically incorrect. Toddler Taming is also great, but will not appeal to folks who think the title isn't funny.

Condescending.......2000-04-02

Like his other book, the appallingly titled "Toddler Taming" Dr Green advises parents in the most condescending way how to "train" their child from an early age. He seems intent on forcing babies to behave in a way that is most "convenient" and ignores their basic instinctive needs.

More like an instruction manual than a parenting book.

a realistic, non-confrontational approach.......1998-07-09

Like Dr. Green's other book, _Toddler Taming_, this book is a great asset for new parents. As an American living in Australia, I have books about child rearing on my shelves written by both Australian and American authors, and this is the one most consulted in the quiet times as well as hauled out in the middle of the night. Dr. Green uses his personal knowledge as a parent and his professional experience as a pediatrician to address the basic but also sticky issues like sleep and feeding (breast or bottle, as well as solids), as well as issues uncomfortable to talk about (post natal depression, crying, premature birth, birth defects, and SIDS). His humorous, realistic and approachable language makes this book a joy to read, even during those few relaxation periods that new parents have. It will be a huge help for parents who are looking for practical advice in this day and age. And happily, _Dr. Green's Baby Book_ does not have an agenda. It simply provides information and common sense advice that moms and dads can use.

An Expert Guide to War History and Theory 1832-Today.......2000-02-28

This is one book that offers much MORE than its title promises. Not only do the opening chapters offer one of the clearest expositions of Clausewitz's rather abstruse (though worthwhile) writings on the philosophy and practice of war, but the book presents a clear review and critique of how the principles and practice of war was taught in the English speaking world in the past century and a half. The reception of Clausewitz in the US and the former British Commonwealth nations has been mixed, as Bassford shows through his skilfull and fascinating tour of military academy textbooks and the writings of thinkers such as Liddell Hart, Fuller, Hamley, Henderson, and some lesser known lehrmasters of modern combat. This is not dry academic theorizing but a well-written crash course in the way our conception of the higher direction of war has evolved. Bassford shows how, the taint of Prussian, then German "militarism" has unfairly been used against Clausewitz by superficial (or cynical) interpreters ... people who use C. to embellish the "martinet" stereotype.

Whether or not you agree with Bassford's criticisms of well-respected modern military historians such as Liddell-Hart and Keegan, his arguments are cogent and clear.

Anyone addressing the "problem" of total war should consult this book and keep it handy.
