5 out of 5 stars The Best Coffee Table Book to Own.......2000-06-12

I bought this book while at the Vatican so I could understand all the paintings I was about to see. It was an outstanding help and I have since shown it to numerous people who have fallen in love with all the pictures and explanations. In fact, I am ordering a copy for my mother-in-law for fear that she will not be able to relinquish my copy! One of the best parts of the book is that it shows you fold outs of the entire fresco and then spends many pages with close up pictures describing in detail what is included in the large frescos.

I am a beginning Photographer. I found this book accidentally and I like it. He is telling you to know your subject: their personality, quirks, etc. It's not about gloss and phoney smiles.

It is a good beginning to learn about photography. Your not photographing apples and oranges, you are photographing people in the most natural way.

5 out of 5 stars My Headshots get me countless Commercial Auditions.......1999-07-27

John Hart stands by what he writes in this informative book. I am a Character Actress/Singer/Commedianne. Our sessions have never been rushed and he takes the time to examine wardrobe, Hair choices, makeup and creates a very relaxed environment. You can see my picture on page 72 in his book PROFESSIONAL HEADSHOTS: HOW TO MAKE MONEY SHOOTING PORTFOLIOS FOR ACTORS. I am called for countless Commercial auditions as well as Sitcom and theatre work.

2 out of 5 stars The real thing is still to come.......1998-10-31

As a person seriously interested in photographing professional headshots, I am quite deceptioned by this book. The teacher has allocated very few words in fully explaining to the readers the pictures he shows, how do you start business, how to market your work, how a starter without those great reception and changing rooms can nevertheless start. Additionally, how Mr Hart has himself started, a good and really interesting point, is not described at all. Most of the covered topics could in principle make a good book, but too much space is waisted time and again in praising his photos and his models, shown in the book, as if we, the readers, were in fact his prospective clients. Or, worse than that, as if his main interest in writing his book, was to guarantee that his clientele, hereby displayed, come back. Instead of telling us that "Stella Pierce exudes glamour without even trying", according to Mr Hart's taste, perhaps next time he can teach us how to make a glamorous image of a woman that does not look like at first impression. The headshot of Mss DeCristofaro (page 73) emphasizes her already broad chin, instead of minimizing it. Ok, perhaps the pitfall was Mss DeCristofaro's compelling the photographer to lower his camera in order to catch our eye with a bit of her breast, but why displaying such a pitfall over a full page, or at all, and tell the readers about her "cool self assurance and quiet strength" - virtues the photo doesn't communicate? On the other hand some headshots are interesting, as the 4-photos composite of James Douglas in which 4 really different looks are obtained from the same person. What a pitty that in this sample Mr Hart limits his explanations to hair-style/make up/clothing, only, and superficially. What "The top NY headshot photographer" has to say about establishing rapport with the people comming to his studio, is left as everithing else, in broad generalities. So I cannot but conclude that the real good point of this book is in being a living example of how to make money with lousy work. It sounds very nice, Mr Hart, specially for your clientele's ears, that you recommend us "to help actors getting started". Perhaps if you invest a bigger effort in helping readers learn your technique, we would.

              Book Description

For more than thirty-five years, Thomas W. Dichter has worked in the field of international development, managing and evaluating projects for nongovernmental organizations, directing a Peace Corps country program, and serving as a consultant for such agencies as USAID, UNDP, and the World Bank. On the basis of this extensive and varied experience, he has become an outspoken critic of what he terms the "international poverty alleviation industry." He believes that efforts to reduce world poverty have been well-intentioned but largely ineffective. On the whole, the development industry has failed to serve the needs of the people it has sought to help.

To make his case, Dichter reviews the major trends in development assistance from the 1960s through the 1990s, illustrating his analysis with eighteen short stories based on his own experiences in the field. The analytic chapters are thus grounded in the daily life of development workers as described in the stories.

Dichter shows how development organizations have often become caught up in their own self-perpetuation and in public relations efforts designed to create an illusion of effectiveness. Tracing the evolution of the role of money (as opposed to ideas) in development assistance, he suggests how financial imperatives have reinforced the tendency to sponsor time-bound projects, creating a dependency among aid recipients. He also examines the rise of careerism and increased bureaucratization in the industry, arguing that assistance efforts have become disconnected from important lessons learned on the ground.

In the end, Dichter calls for a more light-handed and artful approach to development assistance, with fewer agencies and experts involved. His stance is pragmatic, rather than ideological or political. What matters, he says, is what works, and the current practices of the development industry are simply not effective.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any modern politico.......2007-01-04

This book is the keystone of any collection on the state of the art in modern thought on development assistance. It is easy to read, easy to understand, and presents a persuasive argument for change to the modern methods of so called "development." This books usefulness is not limited to the third world, as its lessons can apply just as easily to New Orleans as it can to the Congo.

I first checked this out from the library, but I'm now picking up a copy (or maybe two) so I can have it on my shelf to cite from and to loan to friends and family.

              Highly reccomended.

4 out of 5 stars great overview of the industry, but ..........2005-05-15

Dr. Dichter gives a wide range of examples based on real experiences that expose many of the pitfalls of development assistance as we know it. Unfortunately, while his descriptions of the problems are quite comprehensive, his proposed solution (i.e. drastically cut development assistance in favor of private development) lacks much in the way of logical support. For instance, there is no contrasting presentation of examples of privately-funded projects that have succeeded where charity has failed, nor any mention of to what extent business relies on government-funded infrastructure improvements, etc. In addition, the topic is best addressed in two stages -- i.e., is it desirable to encourage development in other countries? and, if so, are our current tactics the most effective and efficient ways to achieve this goal? Dr. Dichter addresses only the second question, but seems to conclude that because the status quo is ineffective, the entire pursuit should be abandoned. But in general the book is still highly worth reading if you're the least bit interested in development assistance -- it is both deeply enlightening and generally accessible.

              5 out of 5 stars A Pragmatic Take At A Noble Dream.......2004-04-01

It's one of those (few) publications that would immediately make you sit up straight, cause you to squirm and shake your head in disbelief, heave a deep sigh, raise your eye brows at some point, and move you deeply to show appreciation to its material by graphically interacting with its content (in other words scribbling all over the pages of the book - line by line, margin to margin - with notes and personal reactions. That happened to my copy. That's how interesting the book is!). No, the book is not trashy and is far from cynical. On the other hand, it offers a very reflective, comprehensive and insightful analysis of the mistakes and failures of the development industry as a whole. The author, a "devbiz" insider, is not an anti-INGO humbug but one who calls on his development colleagues to re-examine their (and their organizations') ways and to genuinely consider the often ignored realities in the field. His analysis of the evolution of the development industry and its trends, patterns and pitfalls are based on actual case studies and historical facts. Full of relevant lessons and thought-provoking questions and issues that would challenge not just your notions of development work but even your own values, motives and goals for entering the "devbiz" industry. The book stimulates mentally but tugs at the heart.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent description of the "development industry".......2004-01-28

Mr. Dichter has written an excellent book about the so called "development industry". He describes the evolution of the idea of helping the poor countries of the so called third world since 1950 until today. He discusses the problems that have arisen in the hundreds of governement development agencies, NGOs, and humanitarian organizations, mainly the excessive professionalization and bureaucratization of these organizaitons. The "industry" of development as he calls it, exists mainly to give emplyment opportunities for well paid (and well travelled)consultants than to really help the needy.
Interwoven in his analysis are 18 case stories. Just reading the case stories (which are based in the author's wide professional experience)gives you a better insight in the dilemma of development, than dozens of World Bank, IMF and "imperialism" bashing books that are in the market. The description of how the World Bank ticks is very interesting. You feel that here someone is writing that has gone through all this and has thought about it. THIS IS REALITY and not theory.
I myself have worked in Africa for 5 years as an economist for a Christian Mission Society. It is amazing to see that everywhere in the field the problems are the same: poorly conceived projects, neglect of the consequences of projects, and so on. If you are ever thinking of working in the area of international development, AND if you really want to help the poor, AND NOT MAKE A CAREER OUT OF IT, READ THIS BOOK!!!

                  Book Description

In the short span of 50 years, starting with the founding of Santo Domingo at the end of the 15th century, the Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors established most of the cities that today are the cornerstone of urban Latin America. The monuments, buildings and plazas that make up this vast urban heritage continue to define the region's cultural identity and constitute a valuable asset for socioeconomic development.

Old Cities, New Assets explores ways to bring private investors, developers and urban residents into the preservation process, which is beyond the scope of government alone. Complete with photographs, maps and diagrams, the book describes the different approaches being used to involve these various stakeholders, including interventions by public and private stakeholders in Cartagena, Colombia; operation of a mixed-capital corporation in Quito, Ecuador; and a government-promoted private investment program in Recife, Brazil.

The experiences of these three historic Latin American cities provide significant clues about conditions that attract investment, and show why sustained private involvement is the key to furthering heritage preservation in the region.

5 out of 5 stars This is one fabulous book!.......1998-12-11

BIGGER KIDS, BIGGER PROBLEMS, is an excellent source of assistance when dealing with problems facing one's adult children. Paul Avila Mayer is a very practical man with a genuine desire to help. He has had years of successful clinical experience. The topics covered in this book are those which would affect ANY family living in the USA today, if we are to be honest.

There are many anecdotal recollections of actual cases handled by the Mayer/von Scheurler team which contain excellent insights. These cognitions lead to solutions which are very thoughtful, effective, and easy to apply to individual situations. Both authors possess terrific senses of humor which shine through in this book. I heartily recommend it!

                  Book Description

War was a major engine of modern state-development in the medieval and early modern periods throughout Europe. While the idea of a military revolution - the creation of modern armies and the centralized state - has been traditionally seen as a 17th-century development, more recent scholarship has placed it in the 16th century and before. The contributors to this book offer perspectives on the early modern period.

                  4 out of 5 stars What Revolution?.......2000-04-16

This is a collection of nine essays spanning subjects from the 1066 Norman conquest of England to the Dutch Republic in the 17th century. I found John Walker's essay on the English Templars most interesting. Maybe I've been working in this field too long to be objective, but despite the generally high calibre of these essays, I don't feel like the book met it's stated goal. I find little about them that is actually "revolutionary". Maybe it's just a case that "The Medieval Military EVOLUTION" was just too dull. Taken individually however, the component essays are all interesting and I would recommend them to anyone interested in medieval military history. The parts being more than the sum of the whole, I suppose.

                    Book Description

After 1949, the British Empire in Hong Kong was more vulnerable than the lack of Chinese demand for return and the success of Hong Kong's economic transformations might have suggested. Its vulnerability stemmed as much from Britain's imperial decline and America's Cold War requirements as from a Chinese threat. It culminated in the little known '1957 Question', a year when the British position in Hong Kong appeared more uncertain than any time since 1949. This is the first scholarly study that places Hong Kong at the heart of the Anglo-American relationship in the wider context of the Cold War in Asia. Unlike existing works, which tend to treat British and US policies in isolation, this book explores their dynamic interactions - how the two allies perceived, responded to, and attempted to influence each other's policies and actions. It also provides a major reinterpretation of Hong Kong's involvement in the containment of China. Dr Mark argues that, concerned about possible Chinese retaliation, the British insisted and the Americans accepted that Hong Kong's role should be as discreet and non-confrontational in nature as possible. Above all, top decision-makers in Washington evaluated Hong Kong's significance not in its own right, but in the context of the Anglo-American relationship: Hong Kong was seen primarily as a bargaining chip to obtain British support for US policy elsewhere in Asia. By using a variety of British and US archival material as well as Chinese sources, Dr Mark examines how the British and US government discussed, debated, and disagreed over Hong Kong's role in the Cold War, and reveals the dynamics of the Anglo-American alliance and the dilemmas of small allies in a global conflict.
