A Must Have Review Text.......2000-03-24
Mr. Williams presentation is clear and easy to follow. The text is well thought out and organized into separate chapters covering major design topics. He has taken the time to ferret out all the pertinent footnotes and includes them in the appropriate sections. His summaries and tables are worth the price of admission alone. More Salving Than Your Common Gideon's .......2004-10-05
Leunig. Australia's art beacon. Now, under his tutelage, also available in animated form. Who, once they have seen his 'Book of Common Prayer' will forget the subtle & disquieting man supplicating before a duck accompanied by the adage,'The kneeling man knows, as everybody does, that a proud & upright man does not and cannot talk with a duck. So the upright man is rejected. The man kneels. He humbles himself. He becomes more like the duck. He does these things because it improves his chances of communicating with it.' Leunig's humble folk with tippler's snouts, inhabit crepuscular rooms & scapes presided over by a sickle moon. It's a world that pivots on pathos & it's post-nouveau emblems are tear-shaped, coiled & cashewed in foetal embraces of unpruned maternity. Leunig's ouvre is a paen to small, transitory joys rather than an angry collection of petitions to the Big Fella. Leunig is benignly in awe of cosmic peversities without being obsequious: humour with angel's wings. Creeping into the crevices of despair, he draws a sad, slow breath, sighs & carries on. It's universal stuff while indubitably Australian. Friends in America and the UK have fallen for this guy as much as any Oz fan, who harbours a choice Leunig selection under the fridge magnet.
The Penguin Leunig.......2003-05-20
Michael Leunig is on of the most brilliant writers ever.
Living in the australian bush, drawing for over thirty years have given Michael a great humour and drawing style.
He doesn't show off, he keeps a simple cute style(all though he CAN draw more complex) This books contains great drawings, great poems and funny stories and characters.

Book Description
A lavish, limited-edition collection of photographs, most never published before, from both the public and private life of Al Stewart, the Scottish cult folk hero behind chart hit "Year of The Cat" who enjoyed top ten success in the United States. From Al's childhood and early 1960s pop bands to life as a folk legend in swinging London, to his success in Hollywood and beyond, this is a fascinating and vivid record of an amazing life.

Beetle Bailey of the sixties, quaint for modern children, generates nostalgia in older people.......2006-08-02
Beetle Bailey is a cartoon figure that seems to transcend time, although there have been many changes in the strip over the years. This book is a compilation of segments that primarily feature Beetle and Saergent Snorkel. The humor is very much that of the mild strips of the sixties, although it avoids the regular feature where Beetle is pounded into a fuzzy pancake by Snorkel. Reading it brought back many memories of reading the Beetle Bailey strip when I was a child. Modern children will probably find it quaint and a bit silly, but it will generate a sense of nostalgia in older people.
America's best know private.......2003-03-14
Mort Walker's long suffering private, Beetle Baily, has been a staple in newspapers for many years. He's even had his own postage stamp.
This book has the black and white adventures of all the familiar characters - Sarge, Generak Halftrack and Cookie among others. The drawings are big and easy to read, a real plasure after you've seen it shrunken in the daily papers.
The characters in this book are timeless and full of humor. I recommend this book highly for all of those who want to enjoy a classic comic strip.

Book Description
The primary focus of the book is the interaction between quantity and quality in water resource management at various levels and sectors. The chapters cover field, farm, and regional-level water allocation issues, as well as international aspects of water sharing. The book demonstrates the use of economic approaches such as linear and non-linear programming, dynamic programming, optimal control, uncertainty, and cooperative and non-cooperative game theory.
Good work doesn't perish. The contributions of Dan Yaron summarized in this book represent four decades of analytical and policy work that is as relevant today as it has ever been.
Economics of Water Resources: The Contributions of Dan Yaron will interest all students and professionals involved in water resource allocation, water quality aspects, irrigated agriculture, pollution-abatement programs, and in the interaction between irrigated agriculture, environment, and the urban sector. The book is recommended text for graduate courses in economics of water resources.

Customer Reviews:
poor writing!.......2006-10-23
By the time I reached Chapter 3, I had encountered at least four typos. It makes me question the authenticity of this author's research. If THIS many grammatical errors were allowed to make print, I can only imagine how little time and effort the author/editor put into the creation of this book. And to continue with what someone else said, this author is not even a nurse.
If you are going to spend money on a book about nursing, do not buy this book. Find an author who has more hands-on experience in the field. I found most of the information in this book to be vague, or easily obtainable with a little internet research. Very disappointing.
What the heck?.......2006-04-05
Ok first off the author isnt even a nurse. She has her masters in reading... her bachelors is in elementary education or something. Makes you wonder how she got information on becoming a nurse. I'd say there are plenty of other books out there that were written by actual nurses that would be alot more helpful than this book. I didnt really notice too many grammatical errors but that is because I cant get past the fact that my girlfriend spent $17 on a useless book...
Very badly written and edited.......2005-12-18
I've read about half of this book and have reached the point where I simply cannot read it further. The writing is terrible, with typos and grammatical errors in every paragraph, and repetitive redundancies galore. It's embarrassing! This from an author with a Bachelors degree in Education and a Masters in Reading? If she cannot write a simple sentence, can I trust the content about which she is trying to write?
Very helpful.......2005-01-06
I thought the text was very helpful, jam packed with information and was an easy read. Would recommend it to anyone.
Help Wanted: Editor.......2004-09-10
I enthusiastically obtained this book, and truly, there is some good information in it. I think. The problem is that the typos absorbed my concentration and it took all my energy not to reach for the red pen. This book reads as though it went from concept to press in two weeks.
I couldn't trust the accuracy of this book because if it wasn't edited, is it likely to have been fact checked? Some of the errors are silly, some are grievous. The point is, I read 2 chapters before flinging it aside, and I only read the second chapter out of fascination for the train wreck of typos: at least one per page, no less.
I gave it two stars since as I noted above, I think there might be some good info in it, but I'd double check before I acted on any of it.
Book Description
By the end of the 18th century – following an era which had seen the world increasingly divided into colonial powers and their victims – the Ch'ing dynasty of the Manchus, who had overthrown the native Ming in the 1640s, ruled over the largest and most populous empire in the world, with territories that had doubled in size in the previous few decades. Chris Peers’ engaging study of the late imperial Chinese armies from 1520 to 1840 is supported by a wealth of illustrations and photographs, including eight attractive full page colour plates by Christa Hook.
Customer Reviews:
A brief history of Imperial China during the 1520-1840s.......1999-03-17
This is a fairly expensive book for 48 pages but it does a credible job of describing the era in Imperial China between 1520 and 1840. There are eight different paintings of various chinese troops in different armor and many black and white pictures throughout the book showing weapons and statues of the period.
Various essays in the book also describe the armies of the time, some of the weapons and the setting to each era. In all it does a credible overview of the era and is a very good primer for readers interested in the era.

Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
A short guide to the local flying guys, with emphasis on the problems they face.
Nice Intro for Tourists.......2006-12-24
...which is how I found this book and became interested in the subject. The book is ubiquitous in Hawaii in ABC Stores you see everywhere, especially in Waikiki. I'm not a birdwatcher, however I am interested in conservation of native species. This book gives some historical background behind previous conservation efforts, has colorful pictures of most of the birds you're likely to encounter while on vacation in Hawaii (most of which are introduced species) and includes some sad footnotes about birds endangered or thought to be extinct. The latter are largely due to destruction of habitat and introduction of predators/diseases/non-native species. It also includes a chapter with some better-known "hotspots", which may have led some readers to believe that this little book is trying to masquerade as a field guide for serious birders.
No, if you're an Audubon Society member or serious birdwatcher, this book won't sate you, and you should purchase a true field guide, as the other reviewers have suggested. And no, it is not perhaps as well organized as members of those aforementioned groups would like. But it is written in a personable style, and reads very well in a hotel room at the end of a long day of sightseeing. In fact, I've read it several times.
If you're interested in a more thorough treatise of Hawaii's birds, then I'd recommend the encyclopedic (but dated) Hawaiian Birdlife by Andrew Berger, also an interesting read. It's out-of-print, but still available used as of this writing.
Not for birders!.......2002-11-03
I bought this book in Hawaii because it was the only bird book I could find. It at least showed me some of the birds I would see, but the organization (if there is any--can't tell) is horrible. Next time I would go online ahead of time and buy an actual field guide to birds. It is a nightmare to find a bird in this book, and it doesn't give any information about them, such as their size, or male/female differences; also, it lists some birds more than once--weird. This book should be named differently...perhaps, "A glimpse into the history of birds in Hawaii." Overall, it did help me identify the birds I saw, so was better than nothing, but I would definitely not choose it again.
Excellent for the casual observer.......1999-07-27
This book is intended for the casual observer of birds, not the dedicated birder. (Serious bird-watchers should use Pratt's Field Guide to the Birds of Hawai'i and the Tropical Pacific together with his Enjoying Birds in Hawai'i or Rick Soehren's Birdwatcher's Guide to Hawai'i.) But within its limits, this is a fascinating and readable book. Pratt discusses the native birds, especially the endemic passerines, and illustrates the evolutionary processes which produced their astonishing variety. Then he describes the introduced birds, including their effect on the native avifauna when that is significant. The result is a clear though brief analysis of Hawai'i's avian world.
Pratt is a fine photographer and bird illustrator, and Jack Jeffrey is a true master of avian photography. The result of their collaboration is one of the best-illustrated books on birds I know.
Pratt's writing style is direct and clear. His straightforward narration of the destruction of a large part of the native Hawai'ian avifauna is heartbreaking in its simplicity.
This is an excellent introduction to Hawai'i's birds.
Very good pictures,easy to read,informative,value for money!.......1999-01-15
I need the scientific names, that unfortunately were not listed in the book. The development in the bird changes is also so quick, ( I did not see Frigate Birds over Waikiki. Also the colony of Laysan Albatrosses on Kaohikaipu Island deed not seem to be mentioned, even there was a picture of the island in the book. Maybe the colony is new???) that some changes should be maid, or foreseen in the possible next edition. I also saw a bird that was not listed in the book. I wonder if that could have been an apanane female. But the book does not indicate whether male and female are alike or not. The bird I saw was very alike the apanane in shape an bill. Bill a little shorter grey top of head and green on side. What bird could that have been? Seen in Hosmer Grove. The bird list in the back should be a clean bird list, which ought to be complete. (Ex. Mallard is not in the list. Geografic names should be kept in another list.
If you read this yourself, mr. Pratt, could you please forward the scientific - english list to my e-mail adress - see above. That would be appreciated very much.
Book Description
Thirty-nine of Hawai'i's most commonly sighted birds, illustrated by H. Douglas Pratt, with common names (in English and Japanese), scientific names, Hawaiian names, sizes, wingspans, habitats, and origins.
