    Book Description

Explores the idea that Louis Sullivan's ornament was central to his contribution as architect and city shaper. Early in Sullivan's career in the 1890s, when he emerged as a leading skyscraper architect of Chicago, his ornament gave scale and quality to his work. After 1900, as his career declined, it served to identify his buildings and the humane conception they encapsulated in an increasingly hostile cityscape. The brilliant pencil execution of ornament in his old age became a surrogate for the great architectural projects realized earlier. Stunning new color photographs illuminate this extended essay on how Sullivan's ornament shaped the city.

    4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2002-12-29

This is one of my favorite books. It is not for a beginner. I do a lot of sawdust firing and find this book so inspiring and helpful. If you have some instruction on this firing technique and have an understanding of different clay bodies, this book will enable you to continue to experimenting and improving your results.

    2 out of 5 stars somewhat helpful.......2002-06-24

I was disappointed in this book. I was hoping to find detailed information on firing techniques other than traditional kiln. It did provide this information; however, no detailed information was provided on how to use/position tin to preserve glazing...this was the essential information I was looking for and thought the book would give detailed instructions on how to do this. The book did give good information on a variety of techniques used by potters all over the world, and it was very interesting...but not the "how to" I was hoping for. There was information on building outdoor kilns...and how to fire, which would be helpful to more experienced potters. Not exactly a book for beginners, like me.

    3 out of 5 stars More How-Do Than How-To.......2001-05-29

"Sawdust Firing," through interviews with potters, sets forth how those potters do, rather than stepping through how-to's. This is NOT a book for beginners, except to give a taste of the medium. Brilliant photos of potters' works, 'though mostly UK potters and the editor's own, with a spattering from other countries. The vocabulary is distinctly UK-based, with some terms explained in the glossary. For a US reader, "ceramic fibre" may not instantly translate to "fiberglass," and "bin" to "garbage can." Having said all this, the book is worth the money just for the glimpses of Duncan Ross' work.

4 out of 5 stars Unglazed pottery made accessible.......2000-05-31

This text is a great reference for the potter beginning to work with unglazed firing techinques, and for the experienced potter seeking new ideas. There are slip recipes, definition explanations, and interviews with contemporary working artists. Beautiful photos intersperrsed throughout the text, both color and black and white, illustrate a number of technique results. A variety of kiln assemblies are described, including pit fire kilns and above ground models. Sawdust Firing is an interesting, easy read packed with information and a number of artist's personal preferences regarding their techniques. I highly recommend it to any individual curious about the art - this book makes unglazed firing very accessible, even to beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent starter book, clear text and photographs.......2004-02-25

I confess that in my 30-second browse of this book at the library, I was not that excited about the book. Most of the photos are black and white and the book is very short. I decided to check it out anyway because I could, but I was sure that I would prefer the other book that I was looking at (Joaquim Chavarria's "Throwing Techniques") because of it's much better "shelf appeal" with glossier pages and color photo's. I read both books cover to cover and the Phethean book is much much better.

The pictures although not glossy, are very clear, and the text is clear and reinforces the pictures. In addition, he shows a color photograph of a completed piece that relates to the technique just demonstrated. He uses examples that are manageable for beginners and this book would nicely supplement a class at a local studio. (Chavarria's book is not teaching what most beginner classes in this country would teach.) Phethean also uses appropriate sizes of clay for a beginner. Some of the pieces he works on in the book are large to get a better view of what is being done, but he gives folks sound advice about slowly increasing the amount of clay. He also gives a table listing an appropriate amount of clay to use for a number of common pieces.

The techniques demonstrated in the Chavarria book are very cumbersome and advanced, I have taken many throwing classes and never encountered some of these techniques. The text is awful, and the authors' attitude is that you must do exactly what he says to master throwing. Consequently most of his text concentrates on where each finger should be and it is difficult to follow.

Phethean has a much more relaxed approach saying that finding what works is personal, he uses pictures to show the position of his hands, but uses the text to describe what the student should be accomplishing with each movement.
All in all, it is an excellent book that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in learning to throw.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Potter, Throwing.......2000-03-24

The book itself is not of quality binding, but the information contained within is. A good book for beginners and begin-again-ers. Processes are described step by step with excelent photos or line drawing examples.

        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......1998-12-15

I read this book from cover to cover. I loved the way it was written. I enjoyed Kerrin and Dale's personal stories as well as all the great tips they provide. I've been taking pictures of my pets for many years with my Pentax K1000. While I was reading this book I noticed that my pictures had dramatically improved because I was putting in more time planning the pictures before I took them. I'm sure that now that I've completed reading the book (some parts several times!) I'll be capable of producing consistently good pictures of my pets and my friends pets.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had read this book years ago!!.......1998-10-26

What a joy to read! I couldn't put it down until I had completed it! This is the best money I've spent in a long time!

You don't need to be a "pro" photographer to take great pictures of your dog. This book will show you that, with the camera you already own, you can really capture the essence of your four-legged friend. If you don't have a camera yet, buy this book first!! It has wonderful and clear tips on what to look for in a camera.

Step-by-step, you will learn that planning is the key to great dog photography. You will learn things like head portraits, how to choose a great location, as well as how to make beautiful action shots. There are stunning pictures in this book that will inspire the photo artist in you.

I wish that I had this book years ago, when my first dog was still alive. Pictures like these would have brought me joy long after her passing. On the other hand, I'll be ready for the next puppy!

Whether your dog is noble, courageous, dignified, tender, or just a clown, the techniques in this book will help you capture these qualities on camera, and will provide you with additional and poignant memories of your best pal for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A practical guide that makes sense.......2004-09-25

This book is a must for board members and anyone who works with boards. I have never fully understood the mechanics of how organizations raise money beyond grantseeking. This book lays out a number of alternatives and makes all seem doable. I especially appreciated the 'investing in social enterprises' concept of giving versus the more typical begging on bended knee for what are essential critical services to the community. The exercises are clearly explained and the language is straightforward and easy to follow. The underlying concepts go far to removing the mystery and fear of asking for money. The board recruitment grid, the fundraising planning section, working with consultants and the costs and evaluation sections appeal to my structured way of thinking. I can highly recommend this excellent resource.

5 out of 5 stars Help for Pitching Prospects.......2004-06-18

I am not associated with a non-profit, but I am an artist who is constantly looking for funding sources. I found this book
extremely helpful in suggesting ways to overcome my fear of confronting prospects face to face. It is written simply and reiterates the positive message that we need not fear requesting large amounts of money. Like in any sales game, the worst thing that can happen is rejection.
I haven't yet found people who are "thrilled to give", but doing confidence building prep before I try can only boost my chances.
          Paula Taylor, Independent Filmmaker

5 out of 5 stars An Encouraging and Practical Guide for Resource Development.......2004-06-02

Zimmerman and Lehman have written an encouraging and practical guide sure to help diffuse the fear and loathing with which most nonprofit board members face in fund development. Straight talk about board responsibilities sets the stage. Short easy exercises suitable for board meetings demonstrate fundraising skills and techniques. "Boards That Love Fundraising" provides the script for board presidents and staff to share the practice and the joy of successful resource development within any nonprofit.
-Marcia Rundle, Regional Resource Development Director, Western States Region, Habitat for Humanity International

5 out of 5 stars The only fundraising book you will ever need!.......2004-04-02

The authors challenge traditional attitudes, and fears, about fundraising by arguing that we should view the activity not as "tin-cup begging" but as providing a way for people to invest positively in their communities. The authors break new ground by focusing on benefits that *donors* derive from philanthropic giving and strategies to enhance these benefits. With exercises entitled "What Moves People to Give," the book offers ample opportunity for readers to apply this refreshing approach to their specific circumstances. As a Commissioner on the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women, I also serve on the PTA board of my daughter's public elementary school, always in dire need of funds, and fundraise on behalf of my alma mater, Bryn Mawr College, which relies heavily on alumnae financial support, and I have found this book to be an invaluable resource. I recommend this easy-to-read and comprehensive guide to anyone who serves on a board, especially those of you who have been afraid of fundraising. You won't be able to put it down!

5 out of 5 stars Great Nonprofit Board Resource!.......2004-03-12

I found this book to be a wonderfully straight-forward and user-friendly guide which can actually motivate a nonprofit board to sucessfully fundraise. I think it does a great job of insightfully recognizing the reluctance fundraisers have in asking for money. The authors answer this situation with, what are to me, practical and surprisingly simple ways in which to restore fundraisers' confidence (and enthusiasm!). I definately recommend it!

In a book that is at once a major contribution to modern European history and a cautionary tale for today, Isabel V. Hull argues that the routines and practices of the Imperial German Army, unchecked by effective civilian institutions, increasingly sought the absolute destruction of its enemies as the only guarantee of the nation's security. So deeply embedded were the assumptions and procedures of this distinctively German military culture that the Army, in its drive to annihilate the enemy military, did not shrink from the utter destruction of civilian property and lives. Carried to its extreme, the logic of "military necessity" found real security only in extremities of destruction, in the "silence of the graveyard."

Hull begins with a dramatic account, based on fresh archival work, of the German Army's slide from administrative murder to genocide in German Southwest Africa (1904-7). The author then moves back to 1870 and the war that inaugurated the Imperial era in German history, and analyzes the genesis and nature of this specifically German military culture and its operations in colonial warfare. In the First World War the routines perfected in the colonies were visited upon European populations. Hull focuses on one set of cases (Belgium and northern France) in which the transition to total destruction was checked (if barely) and on another (Armenia) in which "military necessity" caused Germany to accept its ally's genocidal policies even after these became militarily counterproductive. She then turns to the Endkampf (1918), the German General Staff's plan to achieve victory in the Great War even if the homeland were destroyed in the process—a seemingly insane campaign that completes! the logic of this deeply institutionalized set of military routines and practices. Hull concludes by speculating on the role of this distinctive military culture in National Socialism's military and racial policies.

Absolute Destruction has serious implications for the nature of warmaking in any modern power. At its heart is a warning about the blindness of bureaucratic routines, especially when those bureaucracies command the instruments of mass death.

Hull writes a flawed, but interesting, study about the relationship between the ideological underpinnings of the Imperial Germany Army and Germany's military failures since the Franco-Prussian War. Hull main point is that the Prussian (and then Imperial German Army's, Gr. Reichswehr's) overwhelming bias toward operational effectiveness both created, and was created by, a view of warfare so dedicated to the dstruction of enemy forces that it was blind to the political and strategic dimensions of war. As a result, Hull claims, German logistics were problematical, German Military Occupation was disastrous, German strategy was neglected, and German policy was virtually non-existent. Put more broadly, she believes that the German Army was so focused on winning battles and campaigns that it did not have the foggiest idea of how to win (or emerge favorably from) a larger war.

Hull also aims at some bigger points, which she only touches on indirectly. First, her analysis would imply that Germany's conduct of World War II was largely a continuation and (great) amplification of its conduct in World War I and in Africa. Many prominent Nazis -- Hitler, Roehm, and many others come to mind -- were front line soldiers in World War I and had absorbed that military culture. Second, and related, the Imperial German State in general had so completely absorbed and deified that military culture that the German government shared the same failings as the German military.

There is much in what Hull says. But there are also several significant faults in her analysis. First, she dislikes the German Army, despite attempts to remain objective, and thus sometimes makes it look less effective than it was. For example, she claims that German and French losses at Verdun were about equal, something few others would support. Second, she is sometimes ambivalent, if not contradictory. For example, she condemns the German High Command for failing to acknowledge when it was beaten, as for example when the United States entered the war. Yet she condemns its 1918 offensive strategy as reckless gambling, claiming that Germany could have held out far longer if it had adopted a more defensive strategy. Now Hull is probably right -- once the United States entered the war, Germany was probably doomed. But if this is true, Ludendorff and Hindenburg would seem to have done Germany a favor by ending the agony in one year rather than three or four through their adoption of an all-or-nothing strategy.

Actually, Germany came fairly close to a favorable result in World War I, even if it could not have "won" outright. If it had continued to negotiate in good faith, eschued unrestricted submarine warfare, and maintained a relatively defensive posture in the West, Russia would have collapsed and there would have been a real chance at an acceptable peace. Of course, as Hull's own analysis suggests (it would have been helpful if she had been more explicit here, but her fixation on Germany's weaknesses prevents her from doing so), Germany was incapable of formulating such a policy. She was commited to absolute victory and her civilian government was too fragmented and too military-minded to carry out a flexible political strategy. For this inflexibility, Hull rightly claims, Germany military culture was greatly to blame.

This is a study of institutional extremism. It examines the German conduct of war from 1870 through 1918 (from the author's introduction). Part I of the book begins with the suppression of Native revolts in German Southwest Africa in 1904-1907. Part II speaks to Military Culture and the lessons of 1871 and Part III covers WW I.

The author uses an extensive amount of primary resources to present a very compelling case, yet, also draws unsubstantiated conclusions from incomplete records and entries. Despite the attempt to remain objective, there is a readily detectable tone of bias.

As a military analyst and instructor I felt the book was useful as a tool for comparing the lessons of the German experience with the US Military experience over the last 10 years. For instance: is the US Military only capable of thinking in Military terms? In light of Joint and Combined Operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, has the US Military morphed into a "polycratic" institution? Does the Diplomat stand with the soldier? Is there a set of mutually reinforcing values and characteristics that inhibit decision making?

Regardless if these lessons are German, Indian or American, the questions for any Military are the same, are essential and must be asked.
All in all, a good book that is a little heavy to read with some very compelling evidence, yet, also some bias and speculation in presentation.

In this fascinating look at military culture in Imperial Germany, Isabel Hull has broken down the topic into three major categories: the development of the military culture, the definition of military culture in Germany, and how the military culture played out in the Great War during the period 1914-1918.

In her opening section, Hull explains how the colonial wars of the early 20th century, where the Germans were attempting to suppress internal rebellions, became the precursor of an organizational culture that moved beyond suppression and into utilizing the mindset of total annihilation. Hull has largely examined the Herero (in Southwest Africa) as her case study, and the commanders of the German forces dispatched to quell the uprising. By examining military manuals and private papers of the military leadership, Hull demonstrates, quite convincingly, that the development of this strategy of utter destruction began during these wars.

Hull then proceeds to explain how the military culture fit into the German military - almost like any organizational culture would pervade into a company. Further examination of diaries, letters, and other military papers explain how this strategy became the widely accepted tactic of German warfare. She explains how this concept differed from that of Britain's use of force to suppress rebels during the Boer War in an effort to explain that the pervasiveness of this thought process really only permeated the German psyche and not other European nations.

Finally, the author explores how this strategy played out during the First World War (the "Great War"). By evaluating everything from the execution of the Schlieffen plan to the use of civilians as hostages, Hull offers the reader a carefully constructed argument that this war was fought using the tactics developed over the last several decades, though that led to Germany's defeat since the German commanders were unable to accept losses in battles and simply pushed on instead.

Overall, this is a very well written book, and one that is a good addition to the historiography of the Great War; we can now better understand why the German troops acted as they did on the battlefield, and how this war paved the way for the National Socialist ideology that would creep into German society and cause another, greater, war only two decades later.

                                  1 out of 5 stars Absolute trash........2007-01-03

This is another piece of lowbrow anti-German propaganda dressed as historiography.

The book is a mess of primary, yet selective and biased historical research, simplistic psycho-babble, ridiculous sociological-anthropological speculation, pathetic organization behavioural theorising and last but not least, absolutely third rate military history. The author is hell bent on proving that there is a German Sonderweg from the founding of the Second Reich to Hitler, that the vaunted German Army is nothing but foolish automatons predisposed to atrocities and mindless offensives.

All in all, cheap trash billed as history.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Kaplan needs to read this book.......2005-10-13

Robert Kaplan in his book "Imperial Grunts," wants the military to assume a greater role in decision making and have no constraints imposed by civilians. Isabel Hull exposes the flaw of this approach in her book. Accroding to Hull, German soldiers committed numoerous atrocities from the Herro uprising to the First World War due to belief in absolute victory and the absence of civilian supervision. This was seen in the destruction of the Herro tribe in which the Germans delibrately starved the tribe to death, and the complaints by the civilian governors were ignored by the German government. The German government imposed no controls on the military because the conservative political parties supported the army and the SPD did not want to appear as though they were not supporting the troops. The German army continued these same practices during the First World War through the massacre of Belgian civilians, and the expulsion of French civilians. Also the German army encouraged the Turks in their genocide against the Armenians. These measures only tarnished Germany's reputation and were militarily counterproductive. I would strongly reccomend this book to people like Robert Kaplan, who wants the military to run wild in foreign adventures.

                                    Book Description

Between 1903 and 1913, an extensive public debate played itself out in the British press involving the self-governing dominions of the Empire. The debate centered on three large topics--tariff reform, South African reconstruction, and imperial unity--and saw the participation of some of the most respected figures in Edwardian journalism. This book presents a thorough discussion of the involvement of these renowned journalists and the quality press in this debate, examining Edwardian imperial thought as it was reflected in their work. In addition, the quality of their political journalism is evaluated, particularly in regard to its enduring value. The book begins with several introductory chapters, including sections on the journalists James Louis Garvin, John St. Loe Strachey, and John Alfred Spender. The three imperial issues are then fully detailed in light of serious journalistic opinion regarding them. These chapters help to underscore the perceptions informed publicists had about the Empire in general and its future, and to trace the development of thought concerning dominion relations, press opinion about South African reconstruction, and the Tariff Reform vs. Free Trade debate. Among the other topics addressed are the role of the quality press in Edwardian public debate, the attitude toward imperialism following the Boer War, and the strength of the public press in Edwardian political journalism. The book concludes with a chapter that places the entire subject in a broader, 20th-century framework. This book will be a valuable addition to public, college, and university libraries, as well as a useful resource for courses in British history and the history of journalism.

Another bizarrely humorous book from the delightfully eccentric mind of Burton Silver and company, perhaps best known for their Why Cats Paint series and related books.

The full-color illustrations of splattered bird droppings in this handy glove compartment guide enable the motorist to identify quickly which species created which display on the windshield. The excreta of a wide variety of avian species are fully described with detailed notes on the animal's food, geographic location, and the best methods of starting a collection. An invaluable companion for all those who wish to learn more about birds and what they do. Inhabitants of Europe may wish to search their used bookstores for a copy of The Comprehensive Field Guide to the Ornithological Dejecta of Great Britain and Europe which is, unfortunately, out of print.

5 out of 5 stars Now let's get down to some serious bird identification!.......2005-10-19

With all the great Field Guides around it is becoming quite simple to identify a new bird. You are out birding and see a bird sitting atop a tree. You line it up in your bins, take note of the field marks, check your trusty guide, and Presto! You have just found a Painted Bunting. Now,let's crank it up a notch. You're driving along a back road, and SPLAT!!What was that? Now you're in the big league of bird identification. Here's where this book comes to the rescue.Yep! now you can stop the car and check out the characteristics of the splat and determine what bird paid you a visit. This book describes what matches your splat."Small, sometimes only the size of a grain of rice. The coiled, rather gaudy and squishy nucleus is delightfully encapsulated in a semi-opaque,frothy envelope."What you got here,my friend, is also a Painted Bunting;but indentified in a whole new way! However if this is what you got,"Messy and generous, with a definite tendency to splood. The thick, creamy envelope sometimes contains solids of bilious yellow (partly digested gristle and fat) that add a sprightly dash of color to the splay."Check the book, what you got this time is our old friend, the Turkey Vulture.
So,if you want to improve your image with your birding friends get hold of this book and amaze them at the next SPLAT.
Oh yeah;another thing, just in case that splat was with the compliments of a bat instead of a bird;this book will also help you make the differentiation.
A great gift for you or your birdwatching friend.

This is a short guidebook to birds with its smart tongue planted deep in its cheek. It's copiously illustrated with photographs of bird droppings (splays) on car windshields and instructions on how to tell what
species of bird they came from. As the authors say: "A knowledge of each splay is essential to fully describe and understand the variations in ornithological dejecta." It's largely by taking the subject exactly
that faux seriously, but then subverting it with the choice of topic and some very funny invented vocabulary, that they elicit laughs. Here, for instance, is one of their terms of art and its definition:

audibon: Soft sound made by avian dejecta as it strikes a windshield and forms a splay. Audi (l) sound, bon (fr) good, literally, good sound.

The book's kind of a one-trick pony, but a very amusing trick.

I'd never heard of this book (1991) til 2001. It's incredibly funny. Written in a pseudo-audobon style, each page has a perky 1x1" picture of the species of interest, and a sharp, color 4x4" photo of its supposed bird splat. (whether globby, loose, white, gray, yellow, small, large, starburst-like, etc). Very very funny.

                                      Book Description

Nearly one in five Americans is a birder. Many more would like to learn how to identify the common birds seen in their backyards. But the traditional field guides, packed with lots of detail and technical jargon, appear inaccessible to the uninitiated. What is a beginning birder to do?

What’s That Bird? offers a unique combination of ID guidance along with general information basic to becoming a birdwatcher, making it the perfect tool for beginning enthusiasts. Intended as a book for adults and children to share, the design and text are engaging and accessible to all ages.

Detailed profiles of 30 common North American birds, featuring family information, silhouette, habitat, call, size, and general description, make it easy to become a master at identifying backyard birds. The “Also Meet” section introduces an additional 30 birds, usually a regional variation or another member of the family, further expanding one’s bird repertoire.

In a separate section, first-time birdwatchers learn how birds eat, communicate, and even breathe. They also learn the best ways to observe birds, techniques for keeping a bird journal, and how to protect endangered birds. And family-friendly projects, such as building a nesting platform, a bird arbor, and a nesting box, enhance the birding experience.

The book contains more than 120 fullcolor photographs by noted bird photographer Tom Vezo, along with full-color illustrations and easy-reference charts. With interest in birdwatching on the rise, this is an invaluable introductory tool for educators, parents, and children alike.

The writing is superb, taking into account an older child's point of view. It's a significant step up from most similar books for children. It should provide families with hours of enjoyment and learning.
