4 out of 5 stars Fun to color!.......2007-08-24

This coloring book has highly detailed, architectural pictures for grown-ups who still love to color. And while children might possibly enjoy this type of coloring book, the finely detailed, intricate pictures would be more fully appreciated by older teens or adults.

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL.......2007-04-11

I just purchased these Dover COloring Books for my mother and she loves them. The detail is out of this world and the variety of colors you can use are only limited by your inagination. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

3 out of 5 stars Sexy black & white pics, writing, artwork.......2006-02-26

Features some beautiful, honest, and erotic photos with "real" people, some evoking Mapplethorpe. Great book to have in any sex-art collection.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully showing our erotic nature, eye opening........1998-12-02

David Steinberg has put together one of the most beautiful books I have seen in a long long time. The diversity, beauty, uniquiness in each of us. I have enjoyed my copy of this book since 1992 each time seeing and feeling it a little differently. Thanks David.

5 out of 5 stars A joyous celebration of natural beauty in our sexualities........1998-03-09

In the fourth paragraph of his introduction, David Steinberg writes, "In truth, for all its preoccupation with sex, our culture still adamantly refuses to address sexual eros with the simple wonder, open curiosity, and profound respect it deserves. And so we have no complex, imaginative and affirmative culture - written or visual - that is deliberately, honestly and sexually erotic."

It is this writer's opinion that Mr. Steinberg has labored with considerable brilliance and devotion on our behalf to begin building a healthier sexual culture. He has collected for us an affirmative, rich and sexually diverse body of work which is characterized by his warmth and humor, and by his sensitivity and generosity of spirit. If your interest is pornography, this book is not for you.

There are some 200 pages here of stories, poems, drawings and photographs celebrating the sexual diversity of humankind. And how magically well Steinberg has chosen on our behalf.

Would you enjoy an artistic cocktail that is sexy, often deeply erotic, touching, sympathetic beautiful, literate, poetic, fun and arousing? I have enjoyed every moment I've spent with this fine collection, and each time I pick it up, I find another delicious little lagniappe.

David Steinberg, this is a wonderful book for those who would get to know eros a little better and nurture him in their own lives.

parkin's macro text, like his micro text, provides a rudimentary, yet comprehensive, survey of macro econ. it is good for students who have a slight grasp of economics and would like to know more about it. parkin does a good job of explaining and introducing the fundamental concepts. more advanced econ students or individuals with a base of economic knowledge, spend your time and money somewhere else

              4 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-01-10

When you are thinking to change careers, or enter into the non-profit arena, this is a good starting point. There is not much out there to guide us--so this was very helpful to get going.

              5 out of 5 stars straightforward guide.......2003-04-11

This guide proved to be just what it claimed: a source to guide the reader through the different agencies and career paths available in non-prof and gov. It was straightforward, no-nonsense and provided just what I needed, which was a source that listed career possibilities and workplaces, without any fluff or pomp about how wonderful it is that you want to work for the greater good. I already know that. Just tell me how to get hired! This guide did just that.

5 out of 5 stars All the Research is Done for You!.......2003-02-20

This is an excellent easy-to-read manual for anyone interested in the challenge of a non-profit career. The inclusion of government careers and agencies was also really helpful to me in expanding my job search. I was so focused on heart-work in the non-profit sector, that I had never even stopped to consider a career in government. But this guide showed how those career paths can be just as rewarding in terms of making a difference in the world. The lists of organizations saved me a lot of research and provided descriptions and contact information all in one place--a major time saver. Overall, it was as if someone had done all of my research for me in the form of this guide. I feel a step ahead in my career search.

              5 out of 5 stars Helpful Starter.......2003-02-20

Since i didn't really know how to get started in terms of figuring out what's out there in the non-profit/govt world, i was glad to get a book such as this one to get me going in the right direction. it's good to know i can use my economics degree in any number of ways. and the list of resources/organizations at the back is proving very helpful!

                  Book Description

Land tenure arrangements are fundamental to the way societies and economies operate. This book argues that in the South Pacific Islands, land formerly held by community groups under "customary" or "traditional" forms of tenure is now often being privatized. There is a divergence between rhetoric and reality concerning these trends. The authors present case studies from Western Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Fiji, and note parallels from other regions experiencing comparable forces of commercialization, individualization and socio-political change.

                          Book Description

First published by UNC Press in 1972, Sugar and Slaves presents a vivid portrait of English life in the Caribbean more than three centuries ago. Using a host of contemporary primary sources, Richard Dunn traces the development of plantation slave society in the region. He examines sugar production techniques, the vicious character of the slave trade, the problems of adapting English ways to the tropics, and the appalling mortality rates for both blacks and whites that made these colonies the richest, but in human terms the least successful, in English America.

Dunn does an excellent job of explaining the planter class in the West Indies. His research is excellent and his writing style is clear and devoid of that crazy academic jargon so often found in history books. This is my first book on planters and it gave me a good fund of knowledge on the histories of Barbados, the Leeward Islands, and Jamaica, and it outlined in detail how the planters made or lost money. For me, it's Dunn's careful unraveling of the planters' financial arrangements and entanglements that made this book absolutely hard to put down!

5 out of 5 stars the brutality of the West Indies slave trade.......2003-01-01

In "Sugar and Slaves," Richard Dunn shows not only the brutality of the West Indies slave trade that revolved around sugar, but also how slave owners "created a society...radically different from the one they left at home." He notes that while these planters brought with them to the islands their laws, church and social institutions, these settlers early on "developed their own lifestyle...bent by their eager embrace of African slavery." (46) Dunn persuasively argues that European planters who came to the West Indies traveled literally and figuratively "beyond the line" of normal, British social conventions, and created a world in which "everything goes," particularly the exploitation of slaves and natives in the creation of a dominant master class. These rapacious men, he argues, quickly adapted to harsh climatic conditions by abandoning the use of lower class but white indentured servants in favor of exploitable, controllable Negroes once the sugar boom created a demand. "The rape's progress was fatally easy," Dunn notes: "from exploiting the English poor to abusing colonial bondservants to ensnaring kidnaps and convicts to enslaving black Africans." (73) Unlike his Chesapeake or Lowcountry counterpart, the West Indies sugar lord produced nothing but his staple crop, and relied instead on imports for all other necessities. "In short, the English sugar planter was more strictly a businessman than the senhor de engenho of Brazil." (65) This was a marked difference from other English settlement and colonization patterns, which Dunn concludes is evidence of the atypical class of planter the Caribbean islands fashioned.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough and Readable Study of Plantation Development.......2000-03-27

Richard S. Dunn examines the British colonialization of the West Indies. Dunn considers numerous colonies, but Barbados takes early preeminence. Dunn discusses the adventurers of the first twenty years, mostly small-scale farmers; the cavalier-planters of the 1640s and '50s, Royalist exiles who fled the English Civil War; and the slaves who became a majority of the population in the period Dunn considers.

Dunn offers a detailed contrast between the lives of the planter elite and the enslaved majority. This is a landmark work in the history of plantation agriculture in the West Indies.

The work should also interest readers of Southern history. Dunn compares the rise of a cavalier elite in Barbados to the same development in Virginia. Planters from the West Indies, especially Barbados, dominated the early years of the colony of (South) Carolina.

Other works on this period of West Indian history are Richard Sheridan's Sugar and Slavery and Gary Puckrein's Little England. Works by Hilary Beckles examine the lives of women and Blacks in this period of West Indian history.

                            Book Description

This book explores the values and aspirations of settlers in the Far West. It compares rural people who settled in the Willamette Valley in the 1840s, the Utah Valley in the 1850s, and the Boise Valley in the 1860s. The Oregon and Utah settlers tried with differing degrees of success to resist the modernizing trends represented by Idaho, but ultimately adopted the individualistic, commercial, and acquisitive values that prevailed in the New West. How did Americans move away from a culture centering on family and kin and from attitudes that valued and protected the land, not for its commercial worth, but as the base of support for future generations? What led to our present tendency to pursue individual pleasure and material well-being at the expense of communal and broader societal well-being? These are questions central to this comparative study of three peoples who pioneered the American frontiers.

                                    Book Description

Birders from across the country and around the world come to Rocky Mountain National Park every year to find white-tailed ptarmigan, black swifts, northern pygmy-owls, and other high-elevation specialties of the Rockies. In "Birding Rocky Mountain National Park," author Scott Roederer provides a close-up look at eight of the best birding areas in the popular national park. Applying his thirty years of birding experience in "Rocky," Roederer dedicates an entire chapter to each area, offering unprecedented detail in describing where to park, where to walk, what species to expect, and much more.

Want to find that white-tailed ptarmigan? The guide identifies specific locations to look for it, describing not only when and where to go but even how to walk the area in its specilized habitat to best find this elusive bird. Need a black swift for your life list? Forget the arduous hike usually recommended for this hard-to-find species; Roederer knows where to find them roadside in an area of the park not covered in other guides.

The book reveals the best times to visit Rocky Mountain National Park, and it also includes valuable information on trip planning. There's even a chapter covering nearby briding areas, including one local hot spot where 227 species have been recorded. "Rocky Mountain National Park has world-class birding, but you have to know just where to go. On my own past visits I have relied on the phenomenal knowledge of Scott Roederer; and with this book in hand, you can too. Scott's presentation is detailed, authoritative, in-depth, and essential. No birder or naturalist should visit the park with out this book." —Kenn Kaufman

5 out of 5 stars Best RMNP Birdfinding Guide Available.......2006-01-09

As a seasoned world birder with a very extensive birding library, I have purchased dozens of birdfinding guides to regions, countries, states, cities, parks and refuges, and local areas. Scott Roederer's book ranks among the very best birdfinding guides available. I purchased it prior to a trip to RMNP in 2003 and used it to successfully find a number of specialty species missing from my ABA Area and Colorado lists. Scott's book is sort of like a Lane/ABA Birdfinding Guide, but better. Since RMNP is large and possesses many different habitats, Scott has divided the park into about eight areas and provided thorough birdfinding directions for each of these areas. He uses easy-to-follow directions and strategies for locating not only specialty species, but the more common western birds as well. This book is easily used while driving your car since Scott has provided mileages (from various start points) using your trip odometer and bird species names in boldface. The same goes for use when hiking along trails. This book is directed toward both casual and serious birders who want to easily locate their target birds in a reasonable period of time while enjoying the beauty of RMNP. My main target birds for my all too brief trip to RMNP were the Brown-capped Rosy Finch, Williamson's Sapsucker, and Three-toed Woodpecker. Using Scott's directions and strategies for avoiding the crowds, I easily found the sapsucker and woodpecker on my first try at the Endovalley picnic area and the rosy finch along Trail Ridge Road at the Lava Cliffs parking area. The Lava Cliffs parking area is normally crammed full of tourists and birding is difficult or impossible. Scott suggested arriving at dawn before the other tourists were up and about and this strategy worked brilliantly. I had the entire parking area to myself and within minutes had several Brown-capped Rosy Finches land on the retaining wall about several meters from me. I'm looking forward to using this book again on my next trip to RMNP.

5 out of 5 stars Park Ranger Endorsement.......2002-08-25

This summer while stopped at an overlook on Trail Ridge Rd. in Rocky Mountain National Park, we spoke with a Park Ranger who had Scott Roederer's Birding Rocky Mountain National Park book in her vehicle. She told us that Scott's book was the best book on birding in RMNP. She uses it as a reference for park visitors who have questions about different birds and where to find them. It also is very well illustrated. I would definitely recommend this book for birders who visit this magnificent Park.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Rocky Mountain Birder's Bible.......2002-08-23

As first time visitors to Rocky Mountain Park, we purchased Scott Roederer's Birding Rocky Mountain National Park in the park bookstore, but we wish we had had it to study beforehand. This guide not only focuses on the best locations for specific birds, but also provides careful directions (complete with odometer readings!) to trailheads that go well beyond the general maps available. We were also grateful for his strategies for avoiding the summer crowds, including when to arrive at specific trails and the order in which to bird them. Add to all of this Scott's warm, lucid style spiced with birding anecdotes that we can all relate to, and you get a bible for birding Rocky. Although we are certain that birding the park with Scott would have been the supreme experience, carrying his book in a hip pocket is the next best thing!
