Many computer animation books focus on one specific program, and if any historical information is referenced, it is merely to put the program into perspective. While this approach is useful for artists who need to learn more about an application, it creates tunnel vision for anyone new to the field who is trying to get oriented. The Art of 3-D Computer Animation and Imaging escapes this trap by deftly illuminating the history of computer graphics and animation. It brings the reader up to speed on current trends both in practice and in research.

Lavishly illustrated, this second edition includes color images from such recent films as Blue Sky Studio's Oscar-winning short, Bunny, and from Pixar's short, Geri's Game. The rendering techniques used in Bunny and the animated cloth techniques used in Geri's Game are discussed, as are topics like advanced modeling, lighting, and shading and surface characteristics. Advanced animation concepts such as motion dynamics, procedural animation, crowd animation, and interactive animation are covered in chapter 12.

Software- and hardware-specific issues don't come up much, but they are mentioned since the tools that are available offer specific features that affect the look of the rendered image. For the most part, though, techniques are discussed in general terms. The burden of specific application falls on the reader.

Ideal for both the new and advanced user, this book is thorough and enjoyable to read. Full of ideas and free of platform or software bias, you'll want to read it while sitting in a comfortable chair rather than at a desk or in front of a monitor. --Mike Caputo

5 out of 5 stars Wowser.......2003-07-18

This is a Book that will teach you 3d, From origin to cool timelines. basic concepts and goes advanced from there HOWEVER there is a new version coming out. the 3rd edition will be out later this year. Maybe you want to wait for that one since it will be completley updated :) It is Teaching me much, as other's Have said it is not a tutorial book. But I personally think if you want to actually Learn 3d animation you have to know the Concepts not just How to Follow Directions. Also A little Side note learn how to draw if you don't yet. If this is your dream arm yourself with every aspect of it. Traditional and 3d. It Can't possible hurt to know as much as you Can. Good Luck.

3 out of 5 stars highly over-rated.......2002-02-12

I think this book is highly over-rated. I found the tiny font very hard to read and the screen captures look like they were made several application generations ago. For my money I'd get something like 3D Animation: From Models to Movies by Watkins or digital 3d design by Danaher.

If they updated this book to reference software that people are actually using today and made the font bigger then I think it might merit a higher ranking.

5 out of 5 stars You haven't bought this book yet? What's wrong with you..........2001-06-20

You want one book that will teach you every concept in 3D? This is the book. Well written, Good diagrams. Just get this book, already!

4 out of 5 stars Not a tutorial book.......2001-06-03

If you are expecting an tutorial book for a day by day work, this book is not for you.
But if you are expecting an overview of techniques developed troughout the time, with a more theoretical approach, this book is your book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books to get if you are in the field of CG.......2000-11-09

Mr. Kerlow has written an excellent fundamentals book that hits the target for beginners who are trying to get a grasp of the scope of CG and a great reference book for veterans as well. The book takes the big picture view of the field and gives great examples of technique and theory as well as the down and dirty uses in the field. If you are starting out in CG, a seasoned veteran or just curious about the field of digital animation this is the first book to purchase.

Book Description

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is increasingly recognized as a problem that affects many people of all ages. This book presents the case - both in theory and practice - that art therapy has a unique ability to help those with AD/HD.

The author begins by explaining comprehensively and clearly the diagnostic criteria and existing treatment methods for AD/HD, discussing issues such as the usefulness of medication in dealing with it. She then goes on to describe a range of art therapy approaches, exercises, and techniques which can be used with people with AD/HD. She describes how workshops can be run for children, adolescents, adults, and families affected by AD/HD. She provides a wide range of clinical vignettes and samples of clients' artwork to illustrate her points, and also gives particular attention to the practical problems that may arise in working with AD/HD clients. The book as a whole is a strong argument for the usefulness of art therapy in providing positive outcomes when dealing with AD/HD.

5 out of 5 stars a therapist's guide for group work with children with AD/HD.......2002-08-02

This is a very good resource for therapists working with children with AD/HD, families with AD/HD and adults with AD/HD. Written in a down to earth style the book briefly reviews the history of AD/HD,tells how to assess children, families and adults and suggests appropriate assessment tools to use. Though the book is not geared to individual work, it coaches the reader in how to set up groups for children, families and adults. In addition, the book includes an excellent resource appendix for the therapist and parent education.

5 out of 5 stars Art Therapy: A must with ADHD.......2002-07-13

In this book, Diane Safran clearly demonstrates her knowledge and skill as a highly qualified art therapist. More importantly, in this work she brilliantly demonstrates the efficacy of this discipline in diagnosing and treating this disorder.
What is most impressive is her sensitivity to and the awareness of the pervasive impact this disorder has on the whole family. Regardless of whether the patient is a child or an adult, once the diagnosis is made, Safran and her team are prepared to address individual, family and environmental issues impacting on future progress of the patient.
The text is well written, the format easy to follow and the case studies and illustrations excellent.
As a pioneer in the field of art therapy education, I recommend this book not only to those teachers and mental health professionals working with ADHD populations, but to students in all fields of mental health who need to be informed about the value of this discipline as an adjunct to their practice and as a significant modality that may be a treatment of choice.

5 out of 5 stars Awakening and Supporting AD and HD at any Age.......2002-07-12

This book should fall into the hands of professionals and families whose lives have been affected by contact with this illness.

The methodology of art therapy is an insight not only to expose repressed feelings as well as helping to define the perspectives of those with antisocial behavior patterns.

The clarity of this easily read book and the dedication of the author's efforts should give impetus to new hope for those who have struggled with this neurological problem.

This reviewer's first hand encounters with the symptoms of ADand HD,hyperactivity, distractibility and impulsivity which evoked only a loving empathy found the contents of the book a hope-filled horizon.

By teaching and giving vent through physical expression in art forms many more senses are engaged leading to awakenings, the author encourages, thereby moving all concerned to more pragmatic and redeeming stages of self regard and social responsibility.

Ms. Safran's studies and conclusions may well repave many paths filled with frustrations and heartbreak for families while providing a seemingly simple method to self discovery for the
ADandHD affected.....at any age.

5 out of 5 stars Great for understanding the needs of your ADHD child.......2002-07-07

I found this book to be incredibly helpful in understanding what my child was going through -- it really helped me better communicate with my child and we are now working through her issues together. It also helped me better understand and work with her therapist. All in all, I found this book to be extremely helpful and recommend it very highly, especially if you or someone you know has an ADHD child.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2002-07-07

I found this book to be incredibly helpful in understanding ADHD and how art therapy can be especially effective in treating this disorder. I recommend it very highly, especially if you or someone you know has an ADHD child in their family.

    Book Description

Today we are so accustomed to seeing photographs wedded to text--whether in the family album or daily newspaper--that the verbal framing of the photograph has become invisible. The text is internalized within the image, and the meaning of the photograph becomes clear and self-evident, as if by the evidence of the photograph itself. In Scenes in a Library, Carol Armstrong explores the experimental moment, at the inception of the new medium, when the word came to haunt the photographic image, and the forty or so years--roughly from the 1840s to the 1880s--during which the photographic image alternately resisted and became assimilated to the printed page.

Armstrong's emphasis is on British books. Not only was it in an English book that the paper photograph was first described and published, but the range of subject matter of nineteenth-century British photographically illustrated books prior to the 1880s was as rich as it was peculiar and sometimes recalcitrant. Armstrong focuses on one book about photography (Talbot's The Pencil of Nature); one "scientific" book (Anna Atkins's Photographs of British Algae); two travel narratives, one factual and one fictional (Francis Frith's Egypt and Palestine Photographed and Observed and his illustrated edition of Longfellow's novel Hyperion: A Romance); and one book of poetry (Julia Margaret Cameron's Illustrations to Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King); as well as some miscellaneous books from the 1870s. According to Armstrong, art history has tended to remove the historic photograph from its printed and published context. Moving back and forth between close looking and equally close reading, she reinserts the photograph into the book from which it was taken.

Straight to the piont: This book answers all our questions and much more. I have given it a shot never knowing that its information are so smoothly spread out and are so rich with essential tips.

If anyone plans on a first approach towards sponsors, this book will let these people avoid some unnecessary and costly steps.

            Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars An essential tool for success.......2004-05-06

I was very excited to read this book because it really is an essential tool to help plan a sponsorship strategy, prepare a proposal, get a meeting, gain committment and ultimately bring in dollars. It is laid out in a very easy step-by-step process that everyone can follow and helps you realize the value your organization can give to potential sponsors. Most importantly, it takes the fear out of selling and demonstrates the correct way to speak to and work with potential sponsors for maximum benefit.

I refer to this book constantly during my sponsorship work with the California Pacific Medical Center Foundation and the Junior League in San Francisco and can say that it has significantly helped me achieve my fundraising goals and advance my career.

5 out of 5 stars Complete, practical, truly useful........2004-01-20

Cheers for a book that actually tells me what to say, do, even think about in order to get a sponsor. For anyone who is serious about getting into sponsorship, where you will actually talk to sponsors and make deals, I recommend this book. I have already put to use the advice on cold-calling and proposal writing.

5 out of 5 stars A great step-by-step guide for the sponsorship novice.......2003-12-23

Very helpful. I have used the templates already, and the amount of detail provided makes it easy to actually act on the advice. The author is generous with her information on how sponsor's make decisions. I have no background in sponsorship marketing, so it was good to know how deals really get done!
Our annual Harvest Fest has been angling for sponsors for years. This year, we are fully-armed thanks to Made Possible By: Succeeding With Sponsorship.
If I have any beef, I wanted more. There are plenty of practical tips, examples and worksheets that are really useful. But never having gotten a sponsor, I wanted even more.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book that answered ALL my questions.......2003-12-07

This book didn't leave anything out. Before reading it, I had questions about how to put together sponsorship packages. Patricia Martin answered all of my questions in her very thorough book... including the questions I didn't even know I should be asking! Her writing style is direct and complete. It is refreshing to read a "how to" book that actually tells you "how to!"

She uses examples that clearly illustrate the things to do, and not do, during various stages of the sponsorship process. She includes worksheets that take all the guess work out of the process. She doesn't hold anything back. Everything you need to organize effective sponsorship packages and partnerships is in this book.

Why do states in arid regions fail to cooperate in sharing water resources and how can they be encouraged to do so? In a provocative and well-researched analysis of the history and current status of the dispute over the waters of the Jordan River basin and its relationship to the Arab-Israeli conflict, Dr. Miriam Lowi explores the answers to these questions. This book will be of value to all those with an interest in the region, and to those concerned with the environmental issues of the politics of water scarcity.

1 out of 5 stars I hated this book! To Expensive!.......2007-09-27

I hated this book and I disliked the author. The book made me angry and depressed. Some parts did relate to my experience grieving the death of my 28 year old son but the book offers little more hope then being able to get out of bed in the morning and walk through the grocery store without crying. I grieve my son. I miss him but I do not give up hope or accept the loss of joy for the rest of my life. For me I want to read a book that focuses on what we can learn from our experience, how our love and our deceased childs love is eternal and to offer me hope for joy in my future not some endless heartache preventing you from even spending a holiday with a grandchild. I am sorry but I found the author to be arrogant and self centered. Why does this book cost so much? What a waste. Save your money and buy 2 to 3 books for the price of this rip off.

                      Book Description

This collection of essays examines the respective religious and social functions of kings and prophets as they are presented in the biblical narratives. Biblical kingship is easily shown to be a specific instance of an ancient and widespread institution--sacred monarchy--that was the pivot of most state organizations throughout antiquity; prophetic authority is described as a typical institution of ancient Hebrew society. The difference between monarchy and prophecy is radical, because the former implies a hereditary power and is upheld by its subjects who feed their kings with taxes, while the latter derives its authority from allegedly direct divine inspiration, and though it is also economically dependent it is not explicitly presented as being based upon systematic exploitation. Cristiano Grottanelli interprets the rise of prophecy as a consequence of a crisis of monarchical structures at the beginning of the Iron Age, and connects it to similar phenomena attested in ancient Greek texts derived from a similar crisis. Though monarchy finally won the day in the Ancient Mediterranean in a new imperial form, the new literatures in Greek and Hebrew consonantic and alphabetic scripts shaped nonmonarchic figures to which they attributed some of the functions previously pertaining to monarchy. These new literatures, produced by two cultures that were both highly literate and organized according to nonmonarchical principles, diverged radically in their development and final outcomes. In the Hebrew tradition, monolatry and an official canon of sacred writings were the final result; the prophetic principle was thus overcome by a new ideological construction, centered upon inspired scriptures rather than upon the impromptu performances of inspired persons. In using the prophetic principle against the monarchic, the canonical texts paradoxically shaped their own authority above that of living prophets.

                        5 out of 5 stars informative book.......2007-10-06

good book about Chimney swifts, their habitat loss and constructing "Chimneys" for them to raise young in. The book describes the construction of these small towers using modern methods and materials. I think this book will be the definitive Chimney Swift work of our time. Buy it and build a tower. You and these gregarious little flying insect eaters will be better for it. Watching Chimney swifts reminds me greatly of watching a Quiditch match as described in the Harry Potter books.

5 out of 5 stars The book to have to make a chimney swift tower!!.......2005-04-30

Kyle and Georgean have put together "the book" on how to build a chimney swift tower. What I especially love about this book is that they provide a numb er of different designs - three different types of wooden towers as well as different types of masonry/cement block towers - so you have options. There are pictures - photographs and drawings throughout to help with the building and the materials/instructions are very clear. I haven't convinced my husband to build one (yet)and we already have swifts in our chimney but I am working with a local park and some eagles scouts to put one up. Another thing I really like about this book is that it goes beyond just putting up a swift tower. It also gives guidance on monitoring the tower (to include electronic monitoring like putting a camera inside) and report forms. It also has great pictures so that at a park, for example, you can create an educational evironment as well. Another neat thing is to also host a "swift night out" in the fall, where people gather to watch the swifts (babies all fledged and practicing their flight maneuvers)as they fly around the tower, dive in and more. Its so amazing to see them flying at incredible speeds and then dive into the chimney or tower. What a sight. I've also ready that when the young are learning to fly, if one is having trouble, the adults will flying in circles below them, creating an updraft to help lift them higher. They are such amazing birds, deserving of our attention and preservation. This book really helps us not only provide a nesting site but also opportunities for our own education.....as the saying goes....we conserve what we love, we love what we understand, we understand what we are taught.
