    Book Description

This long-awaited book by Jon A. Peterson presents a sweeping narrative history of the origins of city planning in the United States, from its nineteenth-century antecedents to its flowering in the early twentieth century. Deeply researched, well-written, and engaging, the text is supplemented by an outstanding selection of historic plans, illustrations, and photographs.

Topics covered in detail include the McMillan Plan for Washington, D.C. (the first comprehensive plan for an American city), the City Beautiful movement, the major planners -- Daniel Burnham, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., Charles Mulford Robinson, John Nolen, and others -- who led the planning movement; the ascendancy of a generalist approach to the shaping of the physical city, the role of the Progressive Era reform, and the emergence of city planning as a novel field of public endeavor. This book will appeal to students and scholars in urban studies, community planning, American history (the Guilded Age and Progressive Era), American studies, architectural and landscape history, as well as environmental and planning history, including practicing professionals in related fields.

                  1 out of 5 stars A total rip-off!.......2000-09-23

This "book" is a rip-off! I strongly recommend you do NOT buy it. All I can think is that it preys on your inability to see what you are getting before you purchase. Shame on you, Amazon, for even having it on your shelves!

You get a set of badly photocopied pages stapled together. The information is less than scant (for example this is what it has to say on Physical Inventory Stock Counting: "Full count at a defined interval (monthly, quarterly,...)". That's it!) and in many cases is inaccurate.

There are no tools, no algorithms, no formulae. The graphics are straight out of Powerpoint.

You will learn nothing from it. Avoid it.

                  1 out of 5 stars Bad.......1999-09-28

Poorly printed and constructed. Limited very general information

                  1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......1999-07-11

This book (if you can call it a book) is a total waste of time and money. It offers very little as far as anything helpful. You should spend a little more money and get a more comprehensive book.

                      Book Description

Throughout history the control of land has been the basis of power. Cadastral maps, records of property ownership, played an important role in the rise of modern Europe as tools for the consolidation and extension of land-based national power.

The Cadastral Map in the Service of the State, illustrated with 126 maps, traces the development and application of rural property mapping in Europe from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century. Beginning with a review of the roots of cadastral mapping in the Roman Empire, the authors concentrate on the use of cadastral maps in the Netherlands, France, England, the Nordic countries, the German lands, the territories of the Austrian Habsburgs, and the European colonies. During the sixteenth century government institutions began to use maps to secure economic and political bases; by the nineteenth century these maps had become tools for aggressive governmental control of land as tax bases, natural resources, and national territories. This work demonstrates how the seemingly neutral science of cartography became a political instrument for national
                      interests.
The manuscript of Cadastral Maps in the Service of the State was awarded the Kenneth Nebenzahl Prize in 1991.

2 out of 5 stars readable, narrow scope, omits many essentials.......2004-08-17

I have specialized in providing professional education and therapy to divorced, courting, and re/wedded couples since 1981. I am (a) 66, (b) a stepgrandson, stepson, and ex-stepfather and stepbrother, (c) an invited Board member of the Stepfamily Association of America, (d) a contributing editor to 'Your Stepfamily Online,' and (e) the author of six personal-growth and family-relations books.

I recommend this pioneering book to readers who want a cursory introduction to stepfamily life, and an historical marker by which to see how much we've learned about stepfamilies since Berman updated this in 1986. I do not recommend this book to anyone who wants to know the core reasons most US stepfamilies are significantly stressful, and why millions redivorce or endure daily agony. The index in this brief book has no entries for shame, values conflicts, communication, grief, loss, stepfamily identity, or psychological wounds.

Like most stepfamily authors since she published, Berman omits explanation and advice on these essential stepfamily stressors:

                            1) why and how to assess and reduce co-parents' psychological wounds from childhood (vs. divorce. Most divorced and stepfamily adults appear to be significantly wounded - and don't know it;

                            2) the origin and impacts of blocked grief in adults and kids, and how to spot and reduce it. All stepfamilies follow (and cause) a series of profound losses (broken bonds);

                            3) co-parent unawareness of - and indiference to - five key topics: (a) normal personality formation, composition, and function; (b) keys to high-nurturance families and relationships, (c) effective communication skills, (d) healthy 3-level grief, and (e) stepfamily realities, norms, implications, and hazards. And...

                            4) the implications of little effective re/marital and co-parenting help (i.e. courtship coaching, classes, informed counseling, co-parent support groups) available in most communities and the media.

In my clinical experience, these factors will often promote needy, love-dazed courting co-parents to commit to the wrong people (mate, stepkids, and "other parent/s"), for the wrong reasons, at the wrong time. Then the factors inhibit co-parents from identifying and resolving these core personal, role, and relationship problems:

                              Book Description

The War of Independence is a detailed and spirited history, told from the British perspective, of military operations during the American Revolution. Written by a foremost authority on the British Army, this superbly narrated account of the war brings to life the ebb and flow of the fighting, the color of eighteenth-century warfare and the harsh realities of warfare in North America and the West Indies.

5 out of 5 stars John Bull History of the AWI:a little bull a lot of history.......2001-07-12

I had always wondered why some enterprising publisher didn't excise the irrelevant material from Volume III of Fortescue's monumental history of the British Army and produce an all American War of Independence volume. I have just ordered the Greenhill edition but have read the original from the multi-volume set. Presumably, John Shy's introduction will provide enough perspective to take the edge off of Fortescue's rankling (to 21st century ears) chest-thumping Victorian imperialist harangue. However, to anyone who winced at the "Patriot's" demonizing of Tarleton (somewhat overdone) and the "Bloodyback" regulars ( a lot overdone), this view from "the other side of the hill" is refreshing. Readers of Higginbottam, John Shy and a hostof other recent sociologically oriented AWI studies may find this as a throwback to the so-called "drum and trumpet" war history, where the strategies and tactics were discussed with little reference to the societies that produced them. Personally, I welcome the return to the nuts and bolts of military operations. Fortescue is no admirer of the American mobocracy, as he makes clear. For example, his description of the viciousness of the ungrateful crowds of colonists as they hurled insult and injury upon the heads of the poor redcoated troops trying to protect them from themselves will be all too familiar to those who read the late 1960s propaganda pieces supporting the US role in Vietnam. It is fascinating to read about the various Kent-state type crowd control episodes and the Boston Tea Party, etc. in that light. On the other hand, given Fortescue's prejudices, it makes his reluctant praise of such episodes as Washington at Trenton and the Saratoga and Yorktown campaigns all the more gratifying to the American reader. He does cast much of the blame on the inefficiency and greed of John Bull's erstwhile native allies, the Loyalists. Likewise the vacillating British foreign policy (that blundering St. Germaine!) is considered to have sold out the valiantly performing British troops. All in all, this is a welcome reprint of Fortescue's take on the American victory of 1781...especially since the full set from which this volume is extracted was only reprinted once, in the 1970s by AMS and the reprint volumes are going almost for as much as the originals from the dawn of the 20th century.

5 out of 5 stars Those Damned Rebels!.......2001-06-20

This valuable volume, which is an extract from the much larger, authoritative, multi-volume history of the British Army by Sir John Fortescue, is a much-welcome addition to the published literature on the subject. Too often, the British Army in North America during the War of the Revolution is seen as the villain, when in reality they were here doing their duty as they saw it, attempting to put down a rebellion in Crown possessions. With a forward by noted historian John Shy, an authority on the period, this handy volume is fair, balanced, informative, and presents a picture of a much-maligned army that fought hard, endured and overcame many hardships campaigning is a hostile environment, and maintained both their outstanding combat reputation and their dignity.

There is a dearth of accurate information on the British army in the United States, both because the War of the Revolution is upstaged, unfairly in my opinion, by the much more popular Civil War, and because of that war in general, and the British Army in particular, being ignored by many current historians. This book neatly fills a very large portion of that void. The British Army becomes a living, breathing entity in this book, and the author is no mere chest-thumper. He casts a cold eye on the mistakes the British made, both at the governmental level and on campaign. He is hard on his countrymen, and gives the devil, ie the Americans and the Continental Army and its commanders, their just due. This book is a necessary addition to any serious library or study to be done on the Revolution, and cannot be done without.

Greenhill once again is at the forefront of military history publication. They have done us all a great service, and if this book is not in your collection, you are missing out both on an historic treat, and a true classic of historical writing.

This book examines global change from a dialectical perspective. Looking at global change in terms of unipolarization in international security, globalization in the world economy, and democratization in global governance, this volume provides a refreshingly Japanese angle on addressing complex interplays between the social forces underlying these themes.

In this groundbreaking volume, Japan's most insightful contemporary labor analyst assesses the "light and shadow" of Japanese-style management, explaining why Japanese employees have stood apart from workers in other industrialized countries. Illustrating the intense combination of competition and community within Japanese workplaces, Kumazawa highlights dilemmas facing Japanese labor on the shop floor and in the labor movement. Highly critical of the hierarchical and undemocratic nature of Japanese industry, he offers a sympathetic view from the inside of the difficulties of surviving in the workplaces of contemporary Japan. Observing birds often raises many intriguing questions. Such as what is the incubation time for those robin eggs sitting in the nest above the porch light? What kinds of flowers attract humming birds? What are the migratory distances of various species? What are the major causes of bird deaths?

The Bird Almanac is an invaluable resource, impressive in scope and depth and complemented with tables and illustrations. This Second Edition has been reformatted for easier use and now features quick-find tabs and an index.

The first section of the book comprehensively covers the history, biology and behavior of birds. Bird physiology, biological systems and anatomy are explained in easy-to-understand terms and annotated illustrations.

                                  Other topics include:

The second section consists of an authoritative world checklist of bird species. The birds are organized by taxonomic order and listed by common and Latin name.

The valuable information in The Bird Almanac fills in the gaps in knowledge of even the most seasoned birder.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Bird Facts & Useful Info for Birders.......2003-09-27

In "The Bird Almanac", ornithologist David Bird has attempted to create a reference volume packed with a wide variety of information that bird enthusiasts of every level of expertise will find interesting and useful. The first 213 pages of this 460-page book is a World Checklist of Birds, which lists all of the world's bird species by their order and includes notation as to their threatened, endangered, or other status where it is applicable. This is followed by 70 pages dedicated to information about the birds themselves. There is a useful chart giving American and British equivalencies in names of birds. There are diagrams, definitions, and many fascinating statistics on bird anatomy and physiology. There are more diagrams and statistics relating to eggs and incubation as well as statistics on mortality and avian diseases. And there are several pages listing truly amazing world records among birds that are sure to make a trivia buff out of you. The next 142 pages contain information about birding, past and present. Included is a Who's Who in Bird Biology and Conservation, information about major ornithological organizations, the birding codes of ethics from both the American Birding Association and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and tips for attracting and feeding birds. There are also extensive listings of bird-watching and bird-banding organizations around the globe, birding hotlines, magazines, newsgroups, festivals, and tours. And there is a glossary of terms in the back of the book. Most of the information in "The Bird Almanac" pertains to North America and Great Britain. The book might have been more aptly named "The Birding Almanac", since it contains more information on birding than about the birds themselves. But the bird information that is here is quite fascinating and has been gleaned from so many different sources that it would be difficult to find elsewhere. Where else could I learn that a peregrine falcon can dive at speeds of 117 mph (wow!), that the largest nesting colony contained 136 million passenger pigeons (scary), or that a group of cormorants is called a "gulp" (funny)? Ornithologists, birders, backyard bird watchers, students, conservationists, and those whose curiosity is stirred by fascinating facts are sure to find something of interest in "The Bird Almanac".

5 out of 5 stars This book belongs in every bird watcher's library........1999-03-22

The amount of information in The Bird Almanac, and the diversity, is staggering, and there is far too much to cover in a short review. The information covers both birds and bird watching, starting with a complete checklist of the world's birds. There is a chart showing the suggested fossil history of birds. The sections on anatomy include not only the traditional bird diagram, but also labeled drawings of the skeleton, digestive system, brain, eyeball, feather tracts, and other systems. There are charts on heart rates, metabolic rates, hearing range, and number of taste buds in various species, and dozens of others in the physiographic section. There are also charts on wing loading, flight speed, daily flight distance, average altitudes of migrating birds, and the ability of birds to transport prey after capture. The mortality section includes charts on the relative occurrence of a long list of diseases and lists of threatened and endangered birds.

There is a section on biggest, smallest, longest, most traveled birds, etc. A section on who's who in bird biology and conservation includes not only the expected names, but important figures less well-known. Do you want to know who was president of the AOU in 1938, or any other year? Who are the recipients of the Elliot Coues Award? It's all here, as well as which teams have won the World Series of Birding and who has won the Duck Stamp competition. There is a section on resources for bird watchers that includes a list of the world's bird watching and ornithological organizations, with addresses, lists of Internet resources, a compilation of the world's bird watching magazines, lists of rare bird alerts, tour companies, CD ROMs, and on and on.

This is one of the most impressive, and useful, one-volume collection of information about birds and bird watching available anywhere. Readers will find themselves delving into it for pleasure over and over, and it will be one of the most frequently used references on the shelf. My copy is going on the shelf next to the Birder's Handbook and the small set of references that are my first line of defense whenever anyone asks a question or I need a quick answer. This book belongs in every bird watcher's library.-Eirik A.T. Blom
