Customer Reviews:
Prairie School but not necessarily Prairie Style.......2007-06-01
This is an exhaustive history of the Prairie School although it is somewhat academic and dry. Its primarily about the people clustered around Louis Sullivan and Frank LLoyd Wright and their diverse work in a couple of decades around the start of last century.
It is not limited to domestic architecture that most now would consider to be 'Prairie Style' as it includes other domestic styles and structures such as banks, schools, churchs undertaken by these people.
Highly recommended for architectural scholars and enthusiasts.......2006-05-06
Award-winning architecture scholar and former president of the Society of Architectural Historians H. Allen Brooks presents The Prairie School: Frank Lloyd Wright and His Midwest Contemporaries, an in-depth discussion of the American architectural development and the "Prairie School", a regional manifestation of a forward-thinking reform movement in the visual arts. Inspired by Louis Sullivan and brought to fruition by famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Prairie School sought to reinvent methods of architectural expression while retaining practicality, and often featured angular forms (much better than flat-topped forms in lands with heavy snowfall upon local roofs) and intricate interior designs. Illustrated with a copious amount of black-and-white photographs and diagrams, The Prairie School: Frank Lloyd Wright and His Midwest Contemporaries draws heavily upon previously unpublished material, original documentation, and interviews to recount the course of the movement, including how and why it came into existence, its achievements, its foibles, and its unfortunate end. Highly recommended for architectural scholars and enthusiasts.
Your Prairie-School "Home Companion"!.......2005-12-20
If you want a basic overview of the Midwestern architects who, along with Frank Lloyd Wright, were bringing about an entirely new kind of architecture in the early years of the 20th Century, then H. Allen Brooks' book is precisely what you need. Brooks takes time to explore the friends, associates, students, rivals, imitators and admirers of Mr. Wright's architectural idiom. There is also a fine overview of Louis Sullivan here.
Many of them got it ... (one cannot resist the pun)... Wright. Many of them created homes and buildings that ought to be better known than they are. Many of them solved problems dealing with space and its enclosure so creatively that these buildings are still most pleasing, aesthetically. As the Century progressed, the Prairie School architecture met with a mixed fate. Some of these brilliant architects flamed out. Others sold out to the mock Tudors of the Twenties and the white Colonials with the picket fence. If one has ever wondered why, Brooks has an answer for that. One that may surprise you.
The book is profusely illustrated. Please understand that the many fine illustrations are presented in black and white. This will whet your appetite. Once you buy this book, you can use it as a research tool. For instance, you can then go on line and find color photos of many of the buildings represented, or additional information about specific architects. You will want to do that, because like a good smorgasbord, Brooks' book makes you hungry for more.
And here is another idea. If you live in one of the places which were fortunate enough to have Wright or Sullivan or their followers at work...do what you can to make sure that these homes and other buildings are preserved. A shocking number of Walter Burley Griffin houses have been disappearing of late. If you have a voice speak up. If you have the wherewithall, why not buy and restore one of these gems?
A dear friend of mine, a smart and engaging lady who has now gone to her eternal rest, was an original F LL W client and she told me more than once that the best education she ever had was living in her Wright house. Wright may be beyond your budget...but some of these other architects' buildings can be had for what you would pay for a new four bedroom place in your town that looks like everybody else's house.
Okay, commercial is over.
If you live in the Midwest, get this book and use it as a "destination guide" for day trips. What fun!
A review of the Chicago Prairie School and its architects.......1999-02-06
First let me say I am not an architect. I am interested enough in this design form to want to learn more about the history and designs of the Prairie School, and its impact on American architecture. I came across this book while looking for just such a review, yet I wanted to avoid wading through textbooks. What I found was a very readable and seemingly comprehensive review of the students of this movement, its background, and its philosophy. The history seems reasonably complete, well presented and ultimately interesting. The book's weakness is its inevitable superficial treatment of each individual's portfolio and their evolution; the student of architecture will want to have more detailed reference materials at hand. For the non-architect, this did create some difficulty in understanding how each of these creators related to each other. This then occassionally creates some dry reading. Overall, however, I have not yet found a better distillation of the Prairie School history. I enjoyed this book, and look forward to a trip to Chicago to investigate some of these architects' works.

Visual, creative, easy how-to text..........1999-03-10
This book overflows with colorful, instructive step by step photos that help ANYONE create gorgeous and unique tiles for anywhere in the house or as great gifts. The many ideas range from stenceling your own tiles, making tabletops and planters, to making bedheads. The book also has a helpful history on tiles and a section on templates. I was given this book as a gift and, as an artist, have treasured it as the best gift I've ever received!
Creative, innovative, and decorative uses of tile........1998-06-15
This is a good book for both beginner and experienced tile users. The historical information about different types of tiles and their origins is interesting. Many of the decorative ideas were new to me, such as the mosaic bed and door panels. The photographs of tile-working tools and techniques are especially helpful. The patterns from projects shown in the book are included, and are a definite bonus.

Customer Reviews:
The romantic 'kiss' only.......2006-05-21
This is a tastefully done album on the subject of the 'kiss'. The visual examples are not vulgar. The quotations are a delight and make for enjoyable easy reading. A page- turner.
Here are a few examples of the wisdom cited in the book.
" A kiss something you cannot give without taking, or take without giving." ( Anonymous)
"Soul meets soul in lover's kisses" ( Shelley)
" The Universe exists in a kiss, hangs on the hold of a kiss. (Zalman Shneour)
The book is without deep or prolonged philosophical consideration of the meaning of different kinds of 'kisses'.
The kisses in question are 'romantic kisses' of usually young man and woman.
There are not in this book the kisses of a mother for a child, or at the other end of life, the parting kiss at the closing of the eyes of one leaving the world.
This book is thus for those whose mind and hearts are in 'romantic love' for the young in spirit primarily.
Ideal Gift.......2004-12-26
I was given a copy of this book years ago and some of the quotes within still stay with me even though the book is now miles away. Quotes from people such as Byron and Rossetti, even accommodating certain lines from Casablanca, as well as art from people such as Klimt makes this a beautiful gift for either man or woman. Some quotes are touching, some funny, and all capture different aspects of the affection and warmth conveyed by the pursing of our lips and making a kind of sucking motion... which as the book tells us, should be done in contact with someone, otherwise you could just be calling a horse! A real pleasure to read and raises a smile throughout

The book provides an insider's look into how the real estate industry works not yesterday BUT TODAY. It shows you how to use the Internet to your advantage. If your not using the Internet in the home buying process and have not bought this book you have missed the boat!...
The best way to sell or buy a home in 2000 and beyond.......1999-11-28
Blanche has taken the worry and confusion out of using the Internet to buy and sell a home with her down to earth and common sense approach. Home owners and prospective buyers alike will find a selective amount of resources, websites, and information Blanche has reviewed to make this book a must have for any homeowner or Real Estate Agent. This book is going to help shape the Real Estate Market into a new level of knowledge and understanding.
TWO "CLICKS" WAY WAY UP! :-).......1999-11-23
Ms. Evans has scored big with this phenomenal book. As a Realtor who does the majority of my business off the Internet, I am going to enthusiastically recommend this guide to all of my Internet clients. There is great information contained on every page... info that every person potentially looking to relocate should gather and digest. Somewhat selfishly, I must say that Ms. Evans does do a good job crediting Realtors, unlike most books which portray ALL agents as salespeople "just out for the sale". She emphasizes that people SHOULD select a Real Estate Consultant to assist in the home search and relocation process.
Kudos to Ms. Evans for writing a book that consumers AND their Realtors can read and appreciate!

The First Hand Experiences Of The First Disciple.......2006-04-08
This is an extraordinary book. How often do you get to read the first hand account of the relationship between an avatar and his first disciple at the very beginning of his work?
Dr. Lewis was a constant and loyal devotee of Paramahansa Yogananda and he witnessed the mission of his guru from the very beginning. His lectures are inspiring and so rare within the literature surrounding Yogananda because they are the only talks that express the lay person's perspective on the teachings, rather than the monastic one.
Most of us live in the world, rather than a monastery, so the guidance given through Doctor's lectures is irreplaceable in describing how to live the yogi's life and have a job and family at the same time.
I'm not aware of any other publication that matches the number of talks by Dr. Lewis that are contained in this book.
In adddition, you get the reflections of someone who actually lived with the Guru from time to time (Mrs. Rosser). Her memories are full of clear detail and evocative recollections that make you feel like an intimate observer during those early days.
Highly recommended!
Disappointing.......2005-10-19
I am a devotee of Paramahansa Yogananda. Over the years, nothing has pleased me more than the God-filled writings of Yoganandaji. Having said that, this book disappointed me greatly.
Several of the letters are hard to understand since the context is not presented. For example, there is a letter where Yogananda seems greatly agitated about some personal problem affecting the Lewis family, it sounded like a misunderstanding had taken place. It would have been easier to understand the meaning of Yogananda's words if we knew what it was that upset him. Several times, Yogananda tells the Lewis' family that their letters please him greatly and he feels their love through their letters. The only problem is that none of the letters written by anyone from the Lewis family are presented!
The section written by Mrs. Lewis was disappointing and lacked the vibration of most writings associated with Yoganandaji. Doctor Lewis presents some wonderful pearls of wisdom in his lectures, but I personally find it much easier to imbibe the teachings when presented by the great guru Yoganandaji himself. The vibrations of Yoganandaji's words and his simple method of presenting the Highest Truth are unmatched.
For anyone looking to learn from the great guru Yoganandaji, I recommend 'The Divine Romance' available from the SRF website. Never have I felt as much love as I have when reading these beautiful speeches of Paramahansa Yogananda.
Wonderfully inspiring and personal!.......2004-06-10
This book tells the story about the Lewis family and their relationship with the spiritual giant Paramahansa Yogananda.
It is inspiring because it gives the reader the heartwarming and true story of how Dr. Lewis (and his wife) became highly successful disciples on the spiritual path, while continuing to lead busy and productive lives in the world at large. It is filled with humor and many entertaining stories, but there is a deep and powerful spiritual current flowing through its pages. Any seeker, on any spiritual path, should have this book in their library. Especially worthy are Dr. Lewis' sermons at the end of the book, which are filled with profound illumination.
A 'must read' for your soul - by James Arness.......2004-02-20
Several years ago, before the end of the run of Gunsmoke, I was blessed to meet two outstanding individuals: Mrs. Mildred Lewis, the widow of Doctor Lewis, and her daughter, Brenda Rosser who had known Paramahansa Yogananda since his coming to America in 1920. Their background in the Self-Realization Fellowship teachings prompted me to read Yogananda's great spiritual classic "Autobiography of a Yogi". Exposure to these high souls and to the SRF teachings had a profound affect on me.
When Brenda published her book "Treasures Against Time" describing the close relationship between Paramahansa Yogananda and Doctor and Mrs. Lewis along with some of the spiritual teachings they were privileged to receive first-hand from the guru, I knew that it would be no ordinary religious work. Page after page glows with eternal spiritual truths, especially those from the God-tuned pen of the great Master, whose 97 letters to the Lewis family show us the human side of the guru and give us pause to reflect that such an avatar came on earth in our time to reveal the eternal truths of God.
Treasures Against Time also shows the depth of the true guru-disciple relationship that was established between the Master and Dr. Lewis. Faithfully following in the footsteps of his guru, Doctor was blessed with many great spiritual experiences, bringing him to the height of spiritual glory and Oneness with God through Nirbikalpa Samadhi.
Every truth seeker must read this book. It will awaken you; it will inspire you; it will guide you to the shores of Divine Fulfillment.
One of God's chosen families.......2004-02-16
You may feel divine love, from reading this book. I met all of the Lewis family in the 1950s, and am happy to read details about their relationship with Paramahansa Yogananda. The book is well written and facinating. I have both the original and the revised edition. They are informative and uplifting books. The book # is ASIN 0962901601

Product Description
The British poets Wilfred Owen, Ivor Gurney, and Siegfried Sassoon found themselves psychologically altered by what they experienced in the First World War. Owen was hospitalized in April 1917 for shell shock in Scotland, where he met Siegfried Sassoon in June of that year, hospitalized for the same affliction. Ivor Gurney found the war, ironically, to have been a place of relative stability within an otherwise tormented life; When he was wounded during the wars final year, his doctors observed signs of mental illness, which evolved into incapacitating psychosis by 1922. For each of these menall poets before the warpoetry served as a way to inscribe continuity into their lives, enabling them to retaliate against the wars propensity to render the lives of the participants discontinuous. Poetry allowed them to return to the war through memory and imagination, and poetry helped them to bring themselves back from psychological breakdown to a state of stability, based upon a relationship to the war that their literary war enabled them to create and discover. This work investigates the ways in which the poetry of war functioned as a means for these three men to express the inexpressible and to extract value out of the experience of war. Bibliography and index are also included.

Dr. Hipp's keen intellect.......2006-02-09
Dr. Hipp's tome wrestles with a great period of British Literature--World War I. The WWI literary field is as ripe as any, and Dr. Hipp takes on three of its giants. While Dr. Hipp is also known for his Nabokov scholarhip, he clearly is more than dabbling in this subject area. His book will soon be heavily referenced among students and scholars working in WWI literary history.
