I've had this book since it came out and still consider it to be peerless in capturing all that the Vanderbilt heirs attempted to build as monuments to themselves. It is a great read and the amount of research invested to unearth so many top-notch photos is amazing. I'm dismayed at the original remarks from the library reviewer who panned it!

You'll never see more insightful photos as to what happened to Elm Court in Lenox, MA - the largest shingle-style manor house ever built - or even the wealth of historical photos for Shelburne Farm. The latter produced their own smaller hardcover book which pales in comparison to what "Architectural Aspirations" captures in the one chapter devoted to the estate. As an aside, Elm Court rose again with heirs to the family have restored it between 2000 and 2006.

Picking up even a used copy to add to ones collection is something I strongly recommend.

Long Lost Mansions of the Vanderbilts.......2002-10-08

I loved this book. If you are looking for a book that shows you sites deep inside the long lost mansions of 5th avenue, then this is your book. Read it from cover to cover or just skim through the pages over and over again. These photos tell a million stories, from the caen stone interiors to the triple mansions' immense proportions and details to the lives of the architects themselves. This is a great book!

The Vanderbilts and the Gilded Age.......2001-09-05

If that Library Journal reviewer read more than just the Introduction, which contains a couple of typos, he'd have realized this book tells more about the Vanderbilts and their world than any other book on the subject. Obviously, he didn't. It's a great read.

A great look at the Vanderbilt residences.......2001-07-18

This book is a great look at the stories of all the houses the Vanderbilts purchased or created with their spetacular wealth- and also some of the fascinating stories of the eccentric family members behind the houses. The book is filled with rare photographs and stories of all the Vanderbilt castles.

I found the book to be very entertaining- a must have if you're interested in the Vanderbilt family or the Gilded Age in general.

This is probably the single most impressive supplement to Ars Magica ever written. The book is handled with great knowledge, grave respect, and an intensity of scholarship that one rarely sees in gaming. I handed it to a non-gaming friend who is a Torah scholar and he was impressed; he quibbled with certain points, but overall he saw this as a book that helped clear up many basic misconceptions of Judaism, especially as practiced during the Middle Ages.

Kabbalah will give you background on the Jewish communities of the Middle Ages, their beliefs, their mores, and their habits. It will give you insight into humour, worship, mysticism, and attempting to survive as a marginalized yet recognized people. Unlike the poor pastische earlier supplements have given to the Perfecti, this supplement gives a very accurate presentation of Jewish life (and how it varies in different parts of Europe).

Pick this book up and learn. Shalom.

Rather cute title but the books is nearly useless. The suggestions are all things that everyone has know for years. I didn't find anything that I didn't already know. It is also a random assortment of tips that covers lots of things but also omits more things. Save your money.

This is one source of good information that can be gotten without a large price tag on it. It gives a good detail on the weapons, armour and tatics that can be gotten in a form that is good for western readers. A 5/5 for this one.

awful and incorrect.......2005-01-28

This is a misleading work in its entirety, especially the history section. Both the text and the drawings look like they came from WWII era history books. Recent re-evaluations of Ottoman historical records have led to a dramatic change of perspective, by eminent scholars such as Heath Lowry and Rhoads Murphey, on everything from the non-Turkish contributions to the founding of the empire (2 out of the 4 founders were Catalan mercenaries in Byzantine employ), to the reason why "gazi state" is a complete misnomer, and finally the pragmatism and flexibility in military organization that led to such brilliant early successes. These and many other essential factors are missing here. I would strongly recommend not wasting resources on this shoddy relic, and instead sampling more recent scholarly works, including ones by the aforementioned authors, and downloading more accurate and better drawn pictures of Ottoman soldiers for free on the web.

overall nice but wrong graphics.......2005-01-19

while it was a good intro into the subject quite a few of the visuals (of the soldiers) were not quite correct. i do not want to dis-credit the author but the figures varry at times greatly from the original ones you can see in the Istanbul Musuem of War History and various Turkish resources. at times it seems as if a 'Christian' soldier was taken as a base model and made to look 'orientish' by the painter/illustrator. otherwise like i said a good read.

The Rise and Fall of the Ottoman Empire.......2004-10-17

"Armies of the Ottoman Turks 1300-1774" by David Nicolle briefly reviews the history, armies, weapons, uniforms, and battles of the Ottoman Empire. There are eight striking full-color plates illustrated by Angus McBride that help give the history a visual representation. As with other Osprey Men-at-Arms volumes, there is a lot of information in the 40 pages (including index) and serves as a great introduction to the topic.

As good as an introduction this book is, the author does use some technical terms that may confuse someone new to the subject. However, with a little work consulting a dictionary, one can get through most of this difficulty. "Armies of the Ottoman Turks 1300-1774" also includes several maps, most of which are helpful (one of them is hard to read because it is jammed with the names of cities and it is hard to easily tell where the bodies of water and land meet). Furthermore, a chronology of the conquests and losses sums up nearly 500 years of the rise and fall of the Ottoman Turks.

I found this book to be a great resource in learning about the Ottoman Turks. The costumes, arms, and armor of the Ottoman Turks are interesting and elegant. I enjoyed not only learning about their military conquests, but also the images of who they were.

I just bought this books for a extremely discriminating birder and find that it's going to be difficult for me, a mere enthusiastic ignoramus of a North American nature enthusiast, to hand over to the lucky recipient. The authors have assembled an impressive array of photography, art and artefacts relating to British birds, but this visual array is surpassed by an information-rich and very readable text. They have collected the most recent scientific and environmental data on each family of birds inhabiting Britain and combined it with well-chosen summaries of the folklore and popular attitudes relating to these creatures. As I say, not just for those dwelling on the off-Continent island, but for anyone who cares about birds anywhere and who cares about English speaking culture, from Shakespeare to those currently shaking their fists at the masses of starlings overflying North America.

Each large photo almost fills the page, with a couple sentences adding information and interest to these vintage photos. Quite a variety of birds are pictured & described, and I found the stories about them rather touching! Excellent as storybooks, learning to read books, and homeschool or parent teaching about nature and birds. Pretty cool. Great deal, recommended.
