The second half of the 20th Century witnessed an outburst of theories and manifestoes that explored the possibilities of architecture: it's language, evolution and social relevance. The many 'crises in architecture' and emerging urban and ecological problems questioned the current orthodoxy: Modernism was criticised, questioned and overthrown, only to be extended, subverted and revivified. The result was a cascade of new theories, justifications and recipes for building. This anthology, first edited in 1997, brought together a coherent collection of texts that tracked these important shifts from all the major architectural thinkers and practitioners.

In this new edition of the book, over twenty additional extracts are published that present an entirely new axis for architectural thinking. Whereas much of the 20th-Century thought was dominated by the 'perceived crisis' in Modernity, 'the new paradigm' or 'complexity paradigm' has been excited by the possibilities of Emergence in the Science of Complexity and Chaos theory. The reach of complexity is expressed through the primacy of Benoit Mandelbrot's theories on geometry, with an extract from his manifesto on fractals; and furthered through an outline of Emergence by Steven Johnson. It is also handled through texts that focus on the diagram and are demonstrated in its more applied form through passages dealing with the global city and culture.

Essential for the student and practitioner alike, Theories and Manifestoes since its first edition has established itself as the touchstone book for architectural thought. It features seminal texts by Reyner Banham, Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, Colin Rowe and Robert Venturi. This is now ejected with greater currency with extracts from: Cecil Balmond, Foreign Office Architects, Daniel Libeskind, MVRDV, Lars Spuybroek, UN Studio and West 8.

good collection of essays and ideas about the meaning of Architecture through different authors along the 20th century. It's not a dictionary nor gives the whole understanding of the overlaping of styles, but shows condensed points of view about various topics.

This little green book is like an encylopedia of contemporary famous architects' writings and is a good source for students or layman with not much architectural theory background.

This collection of texts by Mr. Jencks and Mr. Kropf is a post-modern peace of work: joining different ideas as they were equivalent. At the same time it looks like a way to inform about the theories and manifestoes, in fact, it is a redutive and destructive thing because the peaces of writing dont show the real ideas of the architects. The book gives the same importance to entire complex books, short comments about buildings, magazine inteviews, etc. They are not equivalent, people should be more respectfull with the work of the other ones, mainly when their work is to teach and to help understanding.

Educated look at Infidelity.......2005-09-28

Dr. Barbara Y. Stuart is a Licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselor, Conflict Management Consultant, and a Minister of the Gospel. She lives in Georgia with her son, Stephen. Betrayal of Sacred Trust was inspired after Stuart engaged in a doctoral study on women living with their unfaithful husbands. She states, "This is a contribution to the participants, whose voices need to be heard."

Counselors, pastors, friends, families, husbands and wives - anyone who comes into contact with marital infidelity issues will find answers and insights inside the pages of Betrayal. Without dramatization, but instead a studied approach to understanding the why's and how's behind adultery, Dr. Stuart explores this subject in depth.

Divided into four sections, The Structure of Marriage, Marital Unfaithfulness, Consequences of Infidelity and Interpersonal Conflict, the author delves into the issues surrounding a couple faced with betrayal. P-38 lightning in World War II Color (Enthusiast Color Serie.......2000-05-26

This is an excellent picture book and a very nice introduction to research on the P-38. It features photos taken in color from production shots to training photos, to pictures taken at wartime bases of operation. Also presented are snapshots of pilots and ground crew members, showing a reality that is sometimes lost to black and white photography. Text is informative but not intrusive. I think this is a fine book, and well worth many re-visits. There is also a good B-17 Bomber book in this series, which shows that plane's evolution and increasing armament.

An Elementary Book, not a useful reference.......2007-08-09

I have recently moved to the mountains of North Carolina. So I was excited to see a book just for me. It is not too large and it has clear and lovely photos. It begins and ends with a lot of basic bird care, feeding housing, attracting, etc. and landscape information.
Alas, almost every time I turn to this book to identify a bird at my feeder or along a drive into town, that particular bird is not there. The birds that are included in this book are common to North Carolina, but there are so many more that are also common. Where are they?
I think there could have been less "padding" (such as, how to build a birdhouse) at the beginning and end of the book and more actual bird information to have made it a useful tool.

North Carolina Bird Watching: A Year-Round Guide I was very pleased with this book. The pictures were very clear. They were a little smaller than I expected. But overall it was a great help in indentifying the species.

Occasional bird watcher.......2007-01-10

I'm not a die-hard bird watcher, but do feed them and enjoy them frequenting our property. Since moving to South Carolina, I have seen many that I am unfamiliar with, so this was the perfect book for me.

A nice book, but..........2007-01-01

I am originally from the UK and have always had a huge interest in birds, but I have yet to learn about the birds I see here in South Carolina.

This is the only bird book I have for South Carolina/the USA, so I cannot compare it to similar books, but I would say that it is a good book to have for identifying birds that you spot in your yard or wherever.

I really like this book because

- it has nice clear pictures
- it tells you what you can expect to spot in each season
- it shows you the silhouettes of hawks and vultures, so you can tell at a glance what they are, even though they seem to be miles above you
- it tells you the food preferences and housing preferences of birds, so that you can encourage your favourite birds to visit
- it tells you local places to go to spot birds
- it tells you which birds are likely to be attracted to bird boxes, bird baths, bird feeders etc

The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that, for me, it doesn't go into enough detail about the birds, specifically size details and bird calls.

Don't get me wrong, it is a very informative book, with lots of hints and tips and useful information, but you might find that you need another book to accompany it, if you want a little more detail about the individual birds.
