I was excited to see this book when it first came out. Read it the same day and had mixed thoughts. It is useful if you have never made a mold... but helpless if you have moderate to high experience. It is visually layed out better than anything else out there... and I keep it on the shelf for student reference. If you teach ceramics, keep it around. If you are seeking to learn mold making...it is just one of many books that you will need to peice together the real information that you will need to be a confident mold maker.

This well thought out guide gets right to work explaining in clear, concise steps how to construct various types of clay molds. From basic one-piece molds to complex multi-piece molds, Clayton describes their design, construction, and infinite utility. The book is loaded with excellent color and black and white photographs. Some depict the tools and process. Others show a magnificent sampling of finished products. This guide can take the average pot-throwers hobby to the next level. Author Pierce Clayton and Editor Chris Rich have assembled instructions, guidelines and black/white assembly illustrations to make both plaster and rubber molds. Eye appeal in the form of dashingly colorful photos of ceramics of many accomplished artists is also included. His easy-to-follow instructions and pictures have answered every question I had about making plaster molds. I do have one suggestion: trying to keep your copy clean with a plastic book cover might be a good idea!

Jihad, by Mr. Murray Fradin serves as a great primer to understanding that the current geopolitical unraveling did not spring upon us suddenly. Today's events have been fermenting for hundreds of years. Mr. Murray's Jihad is a well documented and succinct treatment that will emerge you into a late nineteenth century conflict that has continued to grow and become globally relevant today. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, but unless we take heed to what was learned in the Sudan over 100 years ago, that light will remain that of an oncoming train.

JIHAD: The Mahdi Rebellion in the Sudan is a welcome break from the spate of fantasy and romance novels currently being churned out in infinite numbers. It is a thoroughly researched yet colorful and exciting narrative centered around the rise of a charismatic Moslem leader in 19th century Sudan, Mohammed Ahmed, who raises a religious war against Britain and her Allies.The author does a commendable job of showing historical parallels between late 19th century Middle East politics and today's Mid-East Crisis. The book is a "tour de force" on the
subject complete with maps (including one drawn by the author),graphics,a comprehensive Appendix, and a ton of foot- notes (carefully arranged at the back of the book for the reader's convenience). Mr. Fradin's main thesis is that the United States is doing at the start of the 21st century in the Middle East what Great Britain did there in the late 19th century- planting an overt footprint in the region to protect her national interests-thus giving at first appearance the image of an imperialist thrust into the area by the Middle East inhabitants. He firmly believes that democracy and its institutions are the future for this region. However. it will take careful negotiation between the Islamic and Western Worlds to achieve a lasting and just peace. Highly-recommended!!!

Excellent source of information. The authors have obviously put an incredible amount of time and effort into research for this book. The writing style follows what I would call a "typical" scientific format: In other words the book is not one for casual reading. The amature as well as professional ornithologist can obtain very precise information about state records for every bird to ever enter (or think about entering) Missouri. This book is definiiely "solid" science with very little, if any, speculation about distrubution or abundance of each species of bird to grace the state with its presence. I feel this book would make a respectable addition to any collection of literature dedicated to ornithology.

I bought this book while doing some (early) Christmas shopping. The book is intended for a friend of mine, who, himself is an outstanding nature photographer. I knew the photos inside the book would have to be "beyond belief" to appeal to my friend. When the book arrived, I could hardly wait to thumb through it. I couldn't believe my eyes. Each photo was better than the previous one. Not only does the book contain beautiful images, I (who am a non-birder) learned much about the birds of Missouri. Mr. Hackett also has a comprehensive forward in which he details his technqiue for capturing images such as the ones in the book. I highly recommend this book whether you live in Missouri or not.

After moving to Missouri for my husband's job, I was interested in all the colorful birds. I purchased this book and have been using it for about a year. It is easy to use and include brief descriptions and fun facts about each bird, as well as colorful photos and maps. The best thing is that the pages are color-coded so you aren't flipping through the whole book trying to find that one red bird you saw--you just flip to the red tab pages.

I just started birdwatching, and this is the first book that I bought to help me along. It is arranged by bird color, which is great for beginners like me who have no idea what to look for. I would say that this is a great book for beginners, but maybe a bit too simple for people who have been birdwatching for awhile. I am about ready for a new book myself...

Excellent way to identify birds around you.......2005-07-12
Birds in the backyard is something that I seldom paid attention to, until my 4 year old daughter started observing them and asking me questions about. I had to get a book ! This book was my choice based on the reviews on Amazon. I have soon discovered that bird watching in your backyard is fun - not just for kids, but for adults too. There are at least 6 or 7 species of birds that frequent our backyard. Within a week, this book has helped us identify the American Robin, the mourning dove and the cardinals (male and female - which look different from each other). Once you get to know the type of bird, it is interesting how your whole perception about your backyard changes. It is no longer a dull backyard with all those noisy birds.
The birds in this book (one bird per spread with picture on the left and ample description on the right) are ordered by color. In some species, females look different from the males, so they are listed in different places, but have reference to each other. Also, for each bird, there is a list of other birds that they are comparable to. That really helps you in distinguishing birds that look similar.
The book itself is very compact and easy to read. I highly recommend this even to people who usually don't care about birds. Just keep it in your family room and next time a bird comes pecking on your window, try to identify it. I promise, you will enjoy it.

Located in the very center of the North American continent, the area is home to most of the eastern bird fauna and many of the western species, and even hosts occasional visitors from the far north. For the St. Louis Cardinals and their fans, there was a great deal of uncertainty going into the 1985 season. Only three years before, the Cards had won the World Series, but were predicted to finish last in the National League East Division by every major publication. Manager Whitey Herzog was expected to rebuild his team, drug abuse had cast a lingering shadow over the game, and a players' strike threatened to halt play.
The situation looked bleak for St. Louis but the season turned out to be nothing like the predictions. The Cards found themselves in a battle for the pennant. good book for Cards fans.......2003-01-16
Since I am not really old enough to remember the '85 season this book provides provides an opportunity to learn more about that year. It is a fascinating read for any baseball fan, but especially Cards fans.

This really is a great little guide to the most commonly seen birds in Missouri. It is a fold out laminated guide that can be tucked into your binocular case and taken out and about as you go looking for birds. My kids enjoy using it to identify birds as well. It even has a guide on the back of Birding Hotspots in Missouri.
Book Description
Designed primarily for beginning birdwatchers and those new to Missouri, this guide introduces the reader to birding highlights that occur in our State throughout the year. Emphasis is placed on the varied habitats of Missouri and on the seasonal fluctuation of regional bird populations.
Chapter I provides an overview of the Missouri landscape while Chapter II groups resident and migrant birds within the natural habitats of our State. Chapter III guides the birder through the year, directing him/her to seasonal birding highlights at twenty-five locations across Missouri.
Chapter IV offers a checklist of birds that reside in or visit Missouri in the course of a year; for each species, information regarding its seasonal occurance and preferred habitat is provided. A time and place for finding each bird is suggested.
