Totally new approach.......2000-08-04
I really liked this book. Rather than being your standard coffee table oversized hardcover (which is a lot of what you find these days about architecture) this book presents a serious and fascinating discussion about architecture and the modern world. Their new approach, looking at three clients, puts the architects in a new light, offering greater depth and understanding of what it takes to build a modern monument. Anyone with a more than cursory interest in architecture would certainly enjoy and learn from this book.

A great book.......2006-06-07
Let me start by saying it's a great book! It's an 8 1/2" x 11" book full of large color illustrations - 200 in total. The only B&W image is the author's photo on the jacket. That's a huge plus. Too many times in the book store I've picked up books on impressionism to find more B&W plates than color. I don't see the point of showing impressionist paintings in B&W... even when discussing just composition.
The book addresses over 50 topics on painting impressionist style paintings with multiple discussions on colors, brushstrokes, figures, composition, and more. Each topic is illustrated with one or more paintings by Dawley and many include one or more close-ups and even photographs of the original scene to reference.
To me, a realist painter who wants to be a little more painterly or dabble in impressionism, this is an invaluable reference that illustrates and describes concepts that I can learn from and apply to my work. I believe it would be even more valuable to someone whose main goal is to paint like the impressionists.
FYI - This book is subtitled "An Impressionist's View" and is the same book with that subtitle available on Amazon.
Wonderful Book!.......2003-07-12
This book has beautiful illustrations and would be an asset to any landscape painter's library.

Book Description
This fascinating book tells, in concise text and abundant illustrations, the story of the fifty-year struggle for dominion of outer space between the United States and the Soviet Union.
The companion volume to a new permanent exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum, "Space Race" examines the spectacular, publicly celebrated milestones of the first steps into space, as well as highly secret efforts to spy on adversaries from high above the Earth. More than one hundred photographs document technological advances in spacecraft, spacesuits, and surveillance equipment, while also telling the human story of space flight with pictures of astronauts, notes on their record-breaking journeys, and reproductions of engineers' first thumbnail sketches and rough outlines of what would become state-of-the-art rocketry.
120 pages, 68 color and 34 black-and-white photos. Smythe-sewn paperbound book, with flaps. Size: 8 1/2 x 11".

Excellent Photographic Survey of the Space Race.......2001-06-06
This relatively short book, a little more than a 100 pages, presents the US-USSR space race in high quality pictures with a small amount of accompanying text. Some of the pictures are the classic photographs from the space race; however, most of the photographs have rarely been publishing and even then only in specialized publications. There is a great presentation of Russian documents and hardware.
The book opens with a section on the German development of the V-2, the race to be the first country to place satellite in orbit, and the development of each countries ICBM arsenal. The next section, which covers more than half the book, is devoted to the race to the moon. This section also contains a great deal about the Russian moon program and has some really nice photographs of the Russian Moon Rocket, the N-1. The final section of the book covers spying from space.
While I doubt this book contains any real new information, the many highly photographs, especially of the Russian hardware, makes this book well worth its price.

Great book featuring awesome photos.......2000-10-07
Space Race offers the casual reader a glimpse of the "space race" from its humble beginnings to the triumphant landing on the moon.
Many of the photos presented in the book have never before been published before.
I bought this book for my collection of other books on astronomy, space exploration, etc.
I have not regretted my decision.

Book Description
Suburban subdivisions of individual family homes are so familiar a part of the American landscape that it is hard to imagine a time when they were not common in the U. S. The shift to large-scale speculative subdivisions is usually attributed to the period after World War II. In Entrepreneurial Vernacular: Developers' Subdivisions in the 1920s, Carolyn S. Loeb shows that the precedents for this change in single-family home design were the result of concerted efforts by entrepreneurial realtors and other housing professionals during the 1920s. In her discussion of the historical and structural forces that propelled this change, Loeb focuses on three typical speculative subdivisions of the 1920s and on the realtors, architects, and building-craftsmen who designed and constructed them. These examples highlight the "shared set of planning and design concerns" that animated realtors (whom Loeb sees as having played the "key role" in this process) and the network of housing experts with whom they associated. Decentralized and loosely coordinated, this network promoted home ownership through flexible strategies of design, planning, financing, and construction which
the author describes as a new and "entrepreneurial" vernacular.

:).......2005-04-02
I loved this book, it's brilliant! As an (immanent) mom to be, I was feeling down cos of my ever-expanding belly and thighs and this brought joy to my day.
great for all moms & midwives.......2005-03-23
This is a wonderful book that will guarantee hours of fun for all moms or midwives. It had all the nursing colleagues at my hospital in stitches! It would make a fanastic baby shower gift for any expectant or new mom.
This is packed full of superstitions that I have never ever heard before, so its thoroughly original as well as well as being very well-researched.
What I most liked about it was that it was very easy to read, full of just the beliefs and superstitions rather than lots of boring academic text.

* 6 maps
* 6 x 9
* First modern study to focus solely on the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac
* Includes all major battles and commanders
In this first of a two-volume survey of the Union and Confederate cavalries, primary sources abound. Historian Edward G. Longacre has consulted 50 manuscript collections pertaining to general officers of cavalry as well as the unpublished letters and diaries of 200 officers and enlisted men, representing almost every mounted unit in the Army of the Potomac. Well known for interrogating "conventional wisdom," he also contributes some provocative analyses regarding the mounted army's organization, leadership, and tactics. This is an exhaustive study that no Civil War enthusiast will want to miss.
Edward G. Longacre is the author of numerous articles and books on the Civil War, including Army of Amateurs, Grant's Cavalryman, Pickett: Leader of the Charge and the Fletcher Pratt Prizewinning The Cavalry at Gettysburg. He currently resides in Newport News, Virginia.
Customer Reviews:
The Definitive Volume!.......2006-07-19
Edward G. Longacre is one of the best known and most prolific military historians currently researching and publishing on the American Civil War. He has authored more than a dozen articles and no less than a dozen books on the conflict, including biographies of Generals John Buford, Joshua Chamberlain, Henry J. Hunt, and George E. Pickett. His latest effort, Lincoln's Cavalrymen, is the first comprehensive study devoted exclusively to the mounted (both cavalry and horse artillery) forces of the Army of the Potomac.
Only two other books have even attempted the scope of examination provided by Lincoln's Cavalrymen - Charles D. Rhodes' History of the Cavalry of the Army of the Potomac (Hudson-Kimberly Publishing Company, 1900) and Stephen Z. Starr's three-volume Union Cavalry in the Civil War (Louisiana State University Press, 1979-84). Unlike these volumes, Longacre provides a more complete picture, by describing the organizational, administrative, and operational history of the cavalry forces of the Army of the Potomac. Rather than merely focusing on their field operations, Lincoln's Cavalrymen also examines the whole spectrum of life in the Union cavalry, including the recruiting, equipping, mounting, training, and organizing of these forces.
Longacre believes that Union cavalry has been unfairly characterized as a force which was inept and which struggled to gain competence. At the same time, Confederate cavalry has been portrayed as qualitatively superior, but ultimately weakened by attrition as the war progressed. Therefore, the Union cavalry superiority at the end of the war has been explained as Confederate weakness rather than Union strength. On the contrary, Longacre argues that, while Union cavalry did initially suffer from a shortage of experienced officers and was handicapped by the belief that volunteer cavalry could not be properly trained in a short period of time, by 1863, Union cavalry was qualitatively equal to Confederate cavalry. By 1864, the Union had achieved superiority not only in numbers and firepower (due to the use of repeating carbines), but had also achieved qualitative superiority.
Longacre has consulted a wealth of primary sources over the 25-year period during which he has researched this volume. In addition to the traditional published sources, he examined 400 (by his own count) collections of letters, diaries, and memoirs written by Union officers and enlisted men from various mounted units in the Army of the Potomac. Lincoln's Cavalrymen includes 65 single-spaced pages of endnotes, as well as a 51-page bibliography of primary and secondary sources. This volume is highly recommended and would be useful for scholars of the cavalry and/or the American Civil War.

Book Description
At the turn of the century, the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company became the "world's largest Negro business." Located in Durham, North Carolina, which was known as the "Black Wall Street of America," this business came to symbolize the ideas of racial progress, self-help, and solidarity in America. Walter B. Weare's social and intellectual history, originally published in 1973 (University of Illinois Press) and updated here to include a new introduction, still stands as the definitive history of black business in the New South. Drawing on a wide range of sources—including personal papers of the company's leaders and oral history interviews—Weare traces the company's story from its ideological roots in the eighteenth century to its economic success in the twentieth century.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-09-14
The book has many birding sites throughout the state of North Carolina. My complaint is that the book does not contain maps of the sites. There are large maps with no detail. The birding sites are shown as a number on the map with no detail on how to get there. For that you must read through a paragraph of directions to multiple locations. It is almost impossible to use on the road. In order to use the book, you will need to research the sites on the internet and print a map. For reference, look at "Birding Georgia" by Giff Beaton (same publisher). This book has very good maps. Hopefully this book will add the maps in later editions.
Glad I bought it.......2007-03-23
We're planning a trip to NC in the early summer, and wanted to know if there would be good birding in the locations we plan to visit. This book answers our questions and gives us all we need to enjoy our trip. The style is very easy and real-person-focused. I'm glad I bought this book and would recommend it to birding buddies.
