17th century French royal Garden design.......1999-01-13
This is a specialized book for those interested in architecture and/or period garden design from 17th century France. Marly was a favorite creation of The Sun King, Louis XIV. Built in a secluded narrow valley not far from Versailles, it tried to create an informal palace where the King and favored courtiers could live a more informal existance not governed by strict court formality as practiced at Versailles. The main features were a Royal Pavilion for the King and his family and a series of small square buildings for quests from the court. The iconology was based on the Zodiac. The facades of the buildings featured "painted" architucture. But the main features were the gardens.
This book has a very brief description of the Royal Pavilion with two elevations and partial floor plans. The real focus is on reproductions of hundreds of color drawings (created in the 17th century) of the multitude of walks, bosquets, fountains, pools and open air "rooms" created by the "gardener king" Louis XIV. There are even multiple plans of the same sites as they evolved over time.
A well done volumn, but again of very specialized interest. There are very few books on Marly as a chateau, as it did not long survive the French Revoultion. Today the site is used a public park, but the elaborate gardens, statues and palace are long gone.
Book Description
From the first publication of Angels on Horseback in 1957, the Thelwell pony entered the language and the libraries of horse-lovers everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Fun book for riders of all ages!.......2006-03-03
I grew up with Norman Thelwell's cartoons and books as a young rider. Loved them as a kid, and ordered this book to share with my students. It's such a great little tool for learning about both useful and fun facts about horses and ponies. Anyone who has ever owned or ridden a Shetland pony will appreciate Thelwell's illustrations, anecdotes, and poor determined little Penelope's plight.
cherished since childhood.......2000-11-16
I was so happy to find that this book (collection of three books actually) by Thelwell had been re-released. As another reviewer said the quality of the illustrations are not a good as the origional editions. But the spirit of his art and humour is still intact. This book is a collection of very funny sketches of horses and their owners going through everything that horses and their owners go through, then some. For example: bathing and grooming your horse. Plenty of opportunity for fun when your horse is reluctant or your skills are lacking. Another example: riding. "never try out novel ways of getting into a saddle....you'll enjoy quite enough variety-...getting out of it". The illustrations, of course, hilariously illustrate the point. So the book is a combination of clever comments and observations and illustrations that bring the humour to life. It is also VERY British. English riding exclusively in this book and the humour is very British as well(Thelwell approaches western riding in 'Pony Panorama').If you like 'Punch' you will appreciate Thelwell. Also check out Thelwells books on gardening, golf etc. He is a master of his art. (P.S. if you want inspiration for an easy to do mural for your horseloving childs wall this book is perfect - your only problem will be choosing which illustration to copy - they are all so funny and wonderful)
re-release.......2000-05-12
Thelwell's Pony Cavalcade is a re-release of his earlier books "Angels on Horseback," "A Leg at Each Corner," and "Riding Academy." The cartoons are delightful, and will be appreciated by all horsepeople.
Sadly disappointed . . ........2000-05-09
I purchased this book for my pony-crazy daughter, but am sadly disappointed. Poor quality printing makes this edition of Norman Thelwell's timeless equine drawings pale in comparison to other, earlier versions. The muddy reproductions of Thelwell's drawings blur or omit the amazing detail of the originals, which made them so memorable when I first read then as a child. I will be perusing the used-book sites for the circa 1970 editions to share with my daughter!

Book Description
McCay's enthusiasm and energy for his vocation infected every panel he drew. With an unflagging work ethic, he drew thousands of cartoons and illustrations that appeared in newspapers around the country and gained him nationwide fame. As popular as McCay was, his work was poorly preserved, and later generations have been unable learn about this cartooning legend. Checker is proud to bring McCay's work back into the public eye.
Customer Reviews:
Checker Scores a Winner With Vol. 8.......2006-12-03
It can't be easy to sell Winsor McCay. Afterall, McCay was doing his work long before the greats of Comic's Golden Age started making their mark. Heck, in most cases, even before they were born. When one considers that the work in this volume is a hundred years old it's nearly hard to fathom. While the McCay market may be a niche market, he still deserves a place among the great pioneers of cartooning, a very important place if truth be told.
Checker Books continues its long running series presenting the cartoonist's non-Little Nemo in Slumberland work. This eighth volume includes more of McCay's other strips such as Dream of the Rarebit Fiend, Poor Jake, Pilgrim's Progress, as well as editorial cartoons and even some of his cigarette advertisements. It's quite an eclectic sampling. Dream of the Rarebit fiend ran from 1904 - 1911 in the New York Evening Telegram. The formula is simple: someone eats a late night snack of Welsh Rarebit which brings on bizarre, often humorous dreams which always end in the subject swearing to never eat Rarebit again.
Rarebit is a spicy cheese on toast concoction that was a popular British snack. I'd guess I might compare it to eating a late night burrito from a convenience store these days. The dream sequences are sometimes funny, sometimes horrific, and sometimes quite...hallucinogenic, and one wonders was it Rarebit they ate or something else! Characters see things like ballerinas riding flying donkeys, and a stable full of piglets crowding their way into bed. Then there is a strip depicting a black woman, speaking in stereotypical black slang, who dreams of using bleach to make herself a white society woman. It's painfully racist but one does have to take into account the era these strips were done and I applaud Checker for including the strip as it is an important look at our culture through hundred year-old looking glass.
McCay's ads for Lucky Strike cigarettes are a scream as they boldly proclaim that they've "removed the prejudice against cigarettes" by making them safer to the smoker. It seems little has changed with the tobacco industry in the last century.
McCay seemed to have a strong handle on the mood of America that shows up in his editorials, which I personally find to be some of his finest work. McCay pulled no punches and he could easily carry his weight with any modern day editorial cartoonist.
For those with a love of cartooning and an appreciation of its history and roots, I cannot recommend Checkers Winsor McCay series any more robustly.

Book Description
The use of new technologies, coupled with the fact that there is an increasing amount of work being done on-line, whether on the Internet, intranets, LANs or other networks, has made extensive employee monitoring by employers inexpensive and easy. Employers have legitimate concerns about the efficiency of their employees, of the quality of the goods or services produced, and in relation to security. Additionally, monitoring can assist in employee health and safety, help reduce or eliminate sexual, racial and other forms of harassment, reveal areas in which training is required, and reduce the potential for crime, corruption, and other illegal activities. There is rising concern about the rights of employees, especially with respect to their rights to privacy, but also, for example, with respect to questions of justice and employee autonomy and dignity, to the legitimacy of some informed consent, to respect for employees as persons, and to trust. Clearly there are conflicting rights and interests. Ways need to be found to resolve these conflicts in a manner that is fair to all. This book contributes to the debate and will point the way toward some solutions. The contributors come from a variety of disciplines, countries, and cultures, and so bring a wide range of perspectives to the issues.

Book Description
...and they lived happily ever after! No matter who is involved in a relationship, or whether it is legally bound or consciously not, most of the dynamics are the same, and ...happily ever after is still the most consistent quest of all from the beginning of time.
Throughout any relationship there will be moments that will definitely give you pause, but consider this; life has not,nor will it ever be a consistent euphoria of happiness. If it were, then when and where would we ever gain the knowledge of wonderful, gratefulness, joy and satisfaction as well as courage, strength and survival that comes from wisdom and growth.
Ancient Words of Marital Wisdom: For the New Millennium cannot protect you from love and life's challenges, but it can sensibly and realistically help to guide you on your way to...happily ever after!
Customer Reviews:
It's Good.......2005-02-03
I just bought this book because I wanted to keep my marriage strong. Even thought it had ideas that I was already familiar with, I enjoyed the book. It even includes journaling pages to write down you thoughts, feelings and ideas.
Marital Harmony.......2003-06-01
As one of the first people to read this book before it went to print (Thanks Marsha!), I have to say it was great! Offering basic common sense advice from someone who has been there, done that. My younger brother is getting married this year & he'll be getting a copy....thank you Marsha for a wonderful book & everything you have done to further the quality of life for our military families. When's the sequel coming out?!
Humor and Realism for Relationships.......2002-05-06
Ancient Words is the healthiest dose of humor and realism for marriage that I have seen in a long time. It's a stark contrast to the self-importance and seriousness of other self-help books, and it comes from a woman with long experience in the hardships of marriage, especially to a military man. Her emphasis on commitment and friendship in a marriage is particularly refreshing, since modern pop-culture wrongly has us so focused on wild romance and sex as the keys to marriage. I recommend this book especially to anyone who has just gotten married.
A man's point of view.......2002-05-04
Obviously somone in Puerto Rico has a personal bone to pick with the author because this book just tells it like it is. I have read it from cover to cover and recommend that all military families add this book to their libraries. Upon return from deployment this book should be mandatory reading for all military members and their spouses.
Better advice on bathroom walls.......2002-04-29
Did an editor ever read this prior to publication?! I find it hard to believe! Talk about dribble, and dribble written in ubonics at that. Don't waste your money. This must have been published by the author since I can't imagine any reputable publisher even considering it. No wisdom here. The prior reviews were probably written by friends and family of the author (word has it that's the case).

Book Description
This book is the first ever, comprehensive photographic guide to the identification of all 24 species of hummingbirds to be seen as breeders or vagrants in North America.
For all their startling colors, the speed of hummingbird flight and the often drab coloration of females and immatures make this group especially difficult to deal with in the field. The simple field marks are often poorly lit, hard to spot, or simply not shown by any particular individual under observation. But accurate identification of these popular and beautiful birds brings both real satisfaction and a welcome challenge to most birders.
Steve Howell, a well-known and respected bird tour leader and author, has made a particular study of the finer points of hummingbird recognition and has specially chosen over 200 stunning photographs to complement the information given in his text. Some species feature as many as 14 photographs each. A detailed introduction covers the basics of hummingbird anatomy and plumage variation, allowing the observer to effectively focus on points that are of value in the field. New field marks are provided and old myths dispelled in this ground breaking and essential new guide.
Key Features:
- Contains up to 14 full-color photos for each species, with detailed photo captions
- Detailed introduction covers fundamentals of hummingbird identification, including discussions of anatomy, plumage variation, and molt
- Comprehensive species accounts describe all plumages, compare similar species in depth, and discuss voice, displays, behavior, geographic range, and seasonal distribution
- Emphasizes difficult to identify plumages, such as females and immatures
- Features 200 stunning photos picked specifically to show identification criteria
Customer Reviews:
Hummingbirds of North America- Review.......2007-07-09
Hummingbirds - one of my passions............2007-05-13
I'm now able to correctly identiful many species of Hummingbirds. Great source of information. Very detailed book.
Steve Howell's photographic hummingbird guide.......2006-03-01
This is a very useful book for birders who want to be able to identify hummingbirds in the U.S. It includes photos and accompanying text for every hummingbird that you are likely (or lucky enough) to spot within U.S. borders. The text is particularly good, and the photos are shown large enough to be of use to the beginner/intermediate birdwatcher in addition to the experienced observer.
The Best Hummingbird Book Ever.......2002-03-30
At The Hummingbird Web Site and at the guest ranch we manage in the mountains in southeastern Arizona we are often asked what is the best hummingbird book. Here's the answer: Steve Howell's Hummingbirds of North America: A Photographic Guide. We refer to it almost daily. It sits in our office beside the three other bird books we would not be without -- the Sibley Guide, Jon Dunn's National Geographic Field Guide, and A Guide to the Birds of Mexico by - Guess who? - Steve Howell. Most of our guests are bird watchers on vacation. The book they were all talking about last year was the Sibley Guide. This year the book most often mentioned is the Howell hummingbird book.
