Good Book For B&W Film Users.......2006-04-03

This is a very good book for B&W film users. The author meticulously explains how to burn, doge and mask for impact as well as some cool ideas on sandwiching multiple negatives and alternative processes.

The heart of this book is making believable composites. He shows you how to make the photograph they way you see it in your mind, not necessarily what you recorded on film. It is a very helpful guide.

Neat ideas.......2003-01-04

I enjoyed this book very much, specifically because I wanted to know how to manipulate photos. I was amazed at how relatively simple it is to add clouds or birds or vines and totally change the image. These photos gave me some wonderful ideas. I'm interested in digital but I figured that I better learn how to do this in the darkroom first.

I don't like saying negative things and I've debated posting this review for quite a while but I feel I must. I'm so mad at myself for having bought this book just from reading descriptions that I have to say something.

I have quite a few photography technique books and this one was one book too many. It has some nice images along with brief explanations on how they were created. The problem I have with the book are the manipulated images, which make up about half of the book. I'm sorry, but I just don't see the point in adding water, clouds and birds to all those images, and often it's the same bird. I'd recommend looking through the book before purchasing, and if you can put up with the manipulated images, go for it, but I just don't see the point in them. Another thing-I haven't gone digital yet but I imagine that the manipulated images can be produced quicker on the computer nowadays.

I've been doing black & white photography for a few years but have never tried combining photos and wasn't sure I could do it. This book has some good explanations. It's easier than I thought. Plus, I got a lot of good ideas about how to combine negatives that I already have. I'd definitely recommend this book...

Not enough technical information.......2002-02-09

I purchased this book expecting to learn techniques for darkroom effects, but the book didn't teach me much. After the introduction, there were a few pages on techniques, but being a photo student, I already understood them. The rest of the book was mostly a showcase of the artist's photographs, which is fine because many were beautiful, but it was just not what I was looking for. I just wanted more specific examples of each technique instead of the thought process for each photograph.

I needed a text to teach an economics class with and searched for weeks with little satisfaction. Then I ran across this under utilized text. The writing is "brilliant" and the authors, especially Mr. Myers seem to have a very firm and realistic grasp of the essential concepts of "Economics"

This is an outstanding economics textbook. Can be used as a quick primer on what the basics of the field are all about. I believe that the author of this book is a truly remarkable and extraordinary individual and everyone should listen to him closely.

Good overview of DoD distributed simulation.......2004-04-20

This book is not for simulation developers. It is a book for someone who is new to the DoD modeling and simulation industry and needs to understand the big picture. The 36 page glossary is a plus.

A better grasp on DIS.......2003-12-24

I wanted to learn about DIS, and a friend reccomended this book to me. Even though I had very little background information on this subject, the author explained it in such a way that he did not cut out any information, but it could still be understood easily. The author goes into great detail about some of the more powerfull aspects of DIS, and with ideas that are a little harder to visualize the author provides helpfull illustrations, and diagrams.
After reading this book, I went onto other writings about this subject, and found my self understanding what the text was talking about before it finished describing the concept. This is a great book to get into the world of DIS, or to Strengthen your existing knowledge of it.

Don't waste your money!.......1999-01-19

If you are interested in the whitewashed politics of distributed interactive simulation, then this is the book for you. If you are interested in technical issues, then look elsewhere. This book is full of mis-statements and garbage.

audio bird songs CD.......2006-07-16

The CD of bird songs is compatible with the Michigan Birds and can assist in helping identify the most common songs & calls of Michigan.

I was a little disappointed that more calls/songs were not on the CD. I was hoping to use the CD to assist in Identifying a few birds that have not been spotted in the upper canopy of northern Michigans swamp/river areas but can be heard singing at dusk in the tree tops.

Overall, the book & CD are useful and I would recommend them to anyone wanting to put a "name" with a voice.

The Brown Thrasher has over a thousand songs.......2006-04-15

This two-CD set is designed as a companion to the book, "Birds of Michigan Field Guide". The calls are in the same order as in the book, which might cause a bit of confusion to listeners who do not own the book, since the birds are arranged by color. For instance, the first birds on the first CD are the Eastern Towhee, Brown-headed Cowbird, European Starling, Red-winged Blackbird, and American Coot, because they are all primarily black in color.

CD bird song guides such as the Peterson Field Guides group bird songs by type of song, e.g. sing-songers, whistlers, or mimics, or else by related species such as woodpeckers or owls. This categorization scheme makes it easier to locate a particular birdsong---at least for me.

Stan Tekiela's classification scheme by color makes perfect sense for his book, but is a bit confusing for the CDs, especially if you can hear the unknown bird but have not yet sighted it.

Another minor complaint is that not all Michigan birds are represented on these CDs. Among the missing are the Vireos (Red-eyed and Yellow-throated), swamp sparrow, and Michigan's most common thrushes (Wood Thrush, Veery, Hermit Thrush). And where are the name-sayers such as the Whip-poor-will, Chuck-will's-widow, or the Eastern Wood-Pewee?

However, for the birds included on the CD, there are more songs, calls, and variations per species than on, say, the Peterson Field Guides--perhaps not all thousand songs of the Brown Thrasher, but enough so that you won't be fooled by the Chickadee's 'spring time' song.

Mnemonics are freely supplied for learning purposes, e.g. "Cherry Cherry Cherry" for the song of the Carolina Wren. The narrator also tells us where and when calls and songs can be heard.

The booklet that comes with the CDs discusses how birds make sounds, and what kind of sounds they make. The index to the CD tracks includes a small photo of the performing bird, and a reference to the page of the Field Guide where this particular bird appears.

Altogether "Birds of Michigan Audio CDs" is a very useful audio guide that I would recommend using in conjunction with Peterson's "Birding by Ear: Eastern/Central" CDs. You should also splurge for a copy of Tekiela's "Birds of Michigan Field Guide."
