Camera Works is about the impact of photography and film on modern art and literature. For many artists and writers, these new media offered hope of new means of representation, neither linguistic nor pictorial, but hovering in a kind of utopian space between. At the same time, the new media introduced a dramatic element of novelty into the age-old evidence of the senses. For the avant-garde, the challenges of the new media were the modern in its most concentrated form, but even for aesthetically unadventurous writers they constituted an element of modern experience that could hardly be ignored. Camera Works thus traces some of the more utopian projects of the transatlantic avant-garde, including the Readie machine of Bob Brown, which was to turn stories and poems into strips of linguistic film. The influence of photography and film on the avant-garde is traced from the early days of Camera Work, through the enthusiasm of Eugene Jolas and the contributors to his magazine transition, to the crisis created by the introduction of sound in the late 1920s. Subsequent chapters describe the entirely new kind of sensory enjoyment brought into modern American fiction by the new media. What Fitzgerald calls "spectroscopic gayety," the enjoyable disorientation of the senses by machine perception, turns out to be a powerful force in much American fiction. The revolutionary possibilities of this new spectatorship and its limitations are pursued through a number of examples, including Dos Passos, James Weldon Johnson, and Hemingway. Together, these chapters offer a new and substantially different account of the relationship between modern American literature and the mediatized society of the early twentieth century. With a comprehensive introduction and detailed particular readings, Camera Works substantiates a new understanding of the formal and historical bases of modernism. It argues that when modern literature and art respond to modernity, on a formal level, they are responding to the intervention of technology in the transmission of meaning, an intervention that unsettles all the terms in the essential relationship of human consciousness to the world of phenomena.

A Great Place to Start.......2002-04-19
I used the acid test for considering how well written a technical book is about my business - I gave it to my wife when she asked me some questions one day.
I have had this book on my shelf for several months and found it extremely valuable in doing some quick general research and in exploring a variety of concepts dealing with planned giving. Written for the small shop (in my opinion) that needs to develop a planned giving program, this is a well-written and easily read book covering A to Z.
Topics start with what is planned giving, move through defining and discussing philanthropy, setting up a planned giving program (first steps), pitfalls to avoid, marketing planned giving and even sample gift instruments. These are but a few of the chapters in what I think is an excellent starting point for someone new to planned gifts and how to promote them (or even a pro looking for some fresh ideas).
Ah yes, my wife. For her, this was a bit of a liberating experience - she now has a good grasp of what I do. She can converse with friends about the business of planned giving very comfortably with a much better understanding of the basics.

Harry Beahr, Jr. and Christopher Price have accomplished something special with this writing. They have documented the birth of the oak-hulled U.S. Sailing Navy with text-book accuracy, while never losing sight of the compelling human drama that the heartiest of sailing souls endured. From the first words, "Body O' me! It's a little city!", the reader begins a nautical journey - as rough as it is elegant - within the expansive bowels of these wooden masterpieces. If you are a reacreational sailor you should have this book aboard if, for nothing else, the detailed (30 page) glossary of sailing terms.

If you, or someone you care about is a sailing afficianado - or a sea-lover of any kind - The Old Navy must be in their collection. It goes far beyond the history of the oak-hulled U.S. Sailing Navy, it speaks to the very heart of the sailor. It reminds us that young men (and today - women) are still lured by the dreams and adventures offered by world travel over open seas.. though such travel is rarely easy or comfortable. It is also a fantastic snap shot of nautical history - drawing attention to terms and conditions that have endured and remain a part of the modern sailors' vernacular. A great read on a quiet night in the harbour.

A really nice bird book. This is designed to be small enough to take around with you, and big enough that the pictures used for identification are actually usable for most people. In general, this field guide has struck a happy medium, and is quite a useful book to have for the bird fancier. A very handy publication.

I just returned from Australia and used this guide exclusively for bird watching in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne! It is easy to use, both logical and very informative. The paintings of each and every bird are exquisite and very, very accurate!
If you want a comprehensive and user friendly bird guide, this is THE ONE to get...It's lightweight, sturdy and an overall excellent source while out and about either in the city or in the Outback bush! FIVE STARS for this one...you will love it!!!
