Book Description

Incisive, jargon-free and a pleasure to read, A Field Guide To American Architecture presents an exceptionally comprehensive view of American architecture from the 1940s to the present. Plentiful photographs and graphic representations, carefully interwoven with succint text and informative captions, make this volume ideal for browsing as well as serious study. Like Carole Rifkind's earlier book, this one investigates buildings by type, taking a fresh vantage point for each--houses, housing projects, public buildings, art museums, churches and synagogues, schools and colleges, tall office buildings, and shopping centers. Encompassing the works of two hundred architects, from the little known to the famous, it builds a diverse and fascinating panorama of recent American architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Path Breaking Field Guide.......2006-05-12

Most field guides to American archiecture end with buildings from the 1950's. It is a rare field guide that goes forward to the Twenty First Century. Yet, most of the nation's buildings were constructed in the past fifty years. There is a real reluctance to identify and catalog contemporary American architecture.

Carole Rifkind and her Field Guide to Contemporay American Architecture boldly goes where other field guides dare to tread. What makes this book so interesting is that she is prepared to define styles and give these new styles names. As an example she has chapters on "Abstract, Technical and Regional" and "Expressionist, Organic, Manipulated Space and Deconstructivist." In the staid world of architectural field guides, this is pretty bold stuff. Rifkind is defining a path that future field guides will probably follow.

The illustrations and floor plans in this book are good but nothing to write home about. All of these homes and buildings are still to new to receive the close attention of the Survey of Historic American Buildings. It is going to take a few more decades for these buildings to enter into the realm of historic.

This is a book for all those who already feel comfortable with being able to identify Tudors and Bungalows and who now want to enter into something just a bit more daring. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Poor illustrations.......2001-11-27

I don't know what book the other reviewers saw, but the copy I have has illustrations that rank with those in high school texts of the 60s. All black-and-white, or rather darkish gray and white, no snap, very bland, on low quality (for reproduction) paper. An office inkjet printer could do much better. With the importance of color in contemporary architecture this is ridiculous (especially for the price). I think that books on visual matters should look good themselves --- otherwise, how do we get excited? How do we begin to want to read it?

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding work on contemporary arcvhitecture!.......1998-12-07

A Field Guide to Contemporary American Architecture picks up where every other book I've looked at leaves off. It not only tells about the building styles of the last 50 years, but it also lets you know that contemporary american architecture is defined by much more than style. Rifkind makes a large and complex subject easy to take. I enjoyed reading about shopping malls, public housing, and school and college buildings -- which most books don't touch. I appreciated the many clear and informative photographs. Kudos to the author for making sense and speaking clearly -- the same qualities that I enjoyed in her earlier book on historic buildings, A Field Guide to American Architecture.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating architectural and cultural history.......1998-11-17

A really nicely written survey of building forms and their uses. This book is a sequel to the author's earlier book, A Field Guide to American Architecture, which I also really liked. This book is better because it presents a more sophisticated view of the cultural landscape. Excellent photos and excellent choice of buildings--some familiar and many brand new to me. Overall, a great resource and guide.

5 out of 5 stars The Woodcuts Of Harlan Hubbard.......2000-03-09

Harland Hubbard's simplisitc woodcuts are an excellent source of inspiration for printmakers and artists. He captures the true meaning of life through his work. Next to his art in the book, are selections from his journal during his shantyboat home, and farm life in Northern Kentucky. This is the next best thing to viewing his original works at the Berringer-Crawford Museum in Norhtern Kentucky!

    Book Description

These two volumes of readings attempt to bring some degree of structure to a relatively diffuse field. Because of the sheer volume of high-quality work in development economics research, they are intended as a sampling of work at the frontier of the field, rather than as a comprehensive overview.

Volume I: Micro-Theory focuses on theoretical work. Topics covered include sharecropping as a principle-agent problem, fragmented duopolies, credit market imperfections, poverty traps, peer monitoring in credit cooperatives, coordination failures, human capital accumulation as an engine of growth, and environmental issues in development.

4 out of 5 stars A collection of good papers, but nothing new.......2005-02-02

This is a collection of (excellent) empirical papers in development microeconomics. Some of the best people in academia working in this field are represented here: Angus Deaton, Chris Udry, Duncan Thomas, John Strauss, Tim Besley, and others. Almost all the papers collected in this volume are by now "classic" references in the literature. But here is also the problem. This book offers nothing that has not already been published elsewhere. If you are reading this review, chances are that you have access to a library, and you are very likely to be in college, or in graduate school. This means that you can easily find *all* these papers easily available online, for free, through JSTOR, or simply through your library. The same also holds for the other volume of this collection, which collects theory papers in micro-development. So, this is a nice book containing mostly outstanding papers, but it is nothing more than a few papers bound in a book, rather than scattered over your desk, or hidden among your files. So, if you do not have plenty of money to spend in books, I do not recommend this volume.

      Book Description

Nonprofit organizations in the U.S. earn more than $100 billion annually, and number over a million different organizations. They face increasing competition for donor's dollars and many of the issues they confront are similar to those confronted by for-profit organizations. Strategic Management for Nonprofit Organizations applies powerful concepts of strategic management developed originally in the for-profit sector to the management of nonprofits. It describes the preparation of a strategic plan consistent with the resources available; it analyzes the operational tasks in executing the plan; and describes the ways in which nonprofits need to change in order to remain competitive. The book draws clear distinctions between the different challenges encountered by nonprofits operating in different industries.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It was well researched and presented. Dr. Oster was able to apply usually dry economic theory and make it come alive in her application of it to the analysis and interpretation of nonprofit organizational behaviour. I hope that it will be widely used as a text book for courses on nonprofit strategic management. The chapter on mission was particularly well crafted.

          Book Description

The location of new housing development has become one of the most intractable controversies of modern times. This book provides a powerful critique of the growing tendency to reduce the debate on the development of new housing to a mere choice between greenfield and brownfield locations. It calls for full account to be taken of such factors as the structure and organisation of the housebuilding industry, supply and demand pressures in the housing market, the contested nature of sustainability and the political character of the planning process if a truly effective housing land policy is to be devised.Drawing on theories from economics and political science, this book will provide an important reference point on the institutional context within which residential development takes place and on the concerns of planning authorities, environmentalists, housebuilders, and their customers in relation to the apparent choice between greenfield and brownfield development.

              Book Description

Egypt has one of the oldest civilizations and proudest national histories in the world, but most military histories treat it as a mere battleground for other great imperial powers such as the Ottoman Empire, the French, and the British. In a lively and stirring narrative, this work tells the untold story of the Egyptian experience. It looks at the lives of Egyptian soldiers fighting at home and abroad, and shows the roles those soldiers and their leaders have played in Middle-Eastern and world history for 500 years--especially in the convulsions that have transformed the Muslim world during the past two centuries. Beginning with an overview of Egypt's ancient and medieval heritage, the book then explores Ottoman military rule, explaining how a tiny Turkish-speaking minority maintained absolute power by keeping military knowledge out of the grasp of native Egyptians. Readers will see how Napoleon's failed Egyptian campaign of 1798 introduced the nation to Europe but, more important, brought modern Western influences to Egypt. During the 19th century, new arms and tactics and the rising force of nationalism transformed Egypt as the empire of the Ottoman Turks slowly decayed. Independence was thwarted by the British, who took over the country in the 1880s to secure links to India. Yet the British paved the way for independence, retraining and strengthening the Egyptian military to make it the strongest and most nationalist force in the country. Finally, McGregor's closing chapters look at Arab nationalism, and at the Egyptian army in the wars of the late 20th century.

                Book Description

Mark Verstandig's compelling epic spans pre-Holocaust Jewish culture in Eastern Europe and its post-war reformation in Australia.

His personal story interweaves the vast forces of politics and history with intimate details of the shtetl--from the pre-war intricacies of Galician society and the textures of a traditional Jewish education, to the agonizing contradictions of Polish-Jewish relations and the complexities of post-war Jewish politics.

His account of the displaced persons camps where 'transit Jews' awaited their chance to emigrate is a signifigant contribution to a little-known aspect of post-war history.

With his gift for observation and his acute powers of analysis, Mark Verstandig has achieved the rare feat of telling the story of his people through his own history. Part autobiography, part Holocaust literature, part sociological analysis, I Rest my Case is a fine achievement.

                Book Description

I Rest My Case is a fascinating and profoundly moving memoir that chronicles the life of J. Stanley Shaw from his childhood years under the supervision of the Brooklyn Hebrew Orphan Asylum in the 1930s to his career as one of the preeminent bankruptcy attorneys in the United States. Shaw's colorful and often poignant reminiscences take us from Depression-era Brooklyn, through his years at Columbia University and New York Law School, his early setbacks at the hands of an unscrupulous real estate developer who left him one million dollars in debt, the political education he received as a leader of the New York Liberal Party during the 1960s and 1970s, and his groundbreaking legal work in corporate bankruptcy. The pages of I Rest My Case are filled with fascinating characters-some famous and some obscure, but always memorable. Shaw was a candidate for mayor of New York, and his political career brought him into contact with a diverse range of luminaries from Nelson Rockefeller to Al D'Amato, and from George McGovern to George Pataki. Shaw has turned a wry and thoughtful eye on his life, filling the pages of his memoir with trenchant observations about the human condition. A brisk narrative set against a rich backdrop of American cultural and legal history, I Rest My Case is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the redemptive power of love. All proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Association for Adults and Children With Learning Disabilities (ACLD), a not-for-profit organization that assists more than 2,500 infants, children and their families.

                1 out of 5 stars GUARDIANSHIP-GOOD OR BAD...SHAW,LICITRA,ESERNIO.......2004-02-28

In 1994, Mike DeLano, my best friend of more than 50 years, suffered a minor stroke. This excuse was used to declare Mike "incapacitated" when his immediate family began to fight over Mike's assets. George Esernio of Shaw, Licitra, Esernio, Schwartz & Bohner, along with Mike's wife Kathryn, were "appointed" as co-guardians of Mike's estate by Judge Frank S Rossetti, who himself is "appointed" by Governor Pataki, a staunch political supporter and personal friend of Stanley Shaw and his firm. A coincidence, I don't think so.

Co-guardians George Esernio and Kathryn DeLano, Mike's wife, after stealing everything they could before legally marshalling over four-million dollars in tax-free municipal bonds. You know, the kind you just need to clip the coupons on for the rest of your life and, would net a person nearly 2-3 hundred thousand dollars a year in income. Well, they began by spending eight-hundred thousand in their first year causing bonds to be cashed in, thereby not only reducing principal, but the interest that Mike's bank accounts should receive in income. Throughout the next ten-years, despite objections the entire time from Mike's eldest son Franklin, the excessive spending continued until Mike's money was nearly all gone. Sadly but much richer, Mike's wife and her co-guardian attorney George Esernio, who now needed a big influx of cash to keep the excessive fees and other expenses being paid, not very surprisingly, decided to sell Mike's buildings and land in Queens that he and Franklin had built with their own hands over a period of forty years. Whew, another couple of million of Mike's money to spend on themselves for a few more years before they need to sell the next building. Oh, did I forget to mention that those buildings that Mike built contained other businesses' that Mike owned that were also adding income to Mike's estate for fifty-years. Too bad his wife Kathryn and George Esernio, who charged more in fees than Mike himself ever took in salary, went bust from "mis-management".

So it would appear that Mr. Shaw and his firm are not Saints or knights in shining armor but instead, a bunch of crooks. At least in this example. Want to know more, call Franklin of the NBGAG (National Bad Guardianship Advocacy Group)at (406) 825-5040 or (406)628-4862 or go look up Index No. 24309-I-93 in the Nassau County Courthouse located at 240 Old Country Rd. in Mineola, NY. and be ready for the guardianship shock of your life!

                1 out of 5 stars SUCH A CROOK.......2004-02-28

I have personally witnessed Shaw's law firm in action. They suck. I saw one instance where they took millions of dollars from my childhood friend and charged hundreds of thousands in legal fees for simply clipping coupons and for instigating problems of an already dysfunctional family.

1 out of 5 stars PLEASE! Say it ain't so..........2004-02-28

Is this the same Shaw that has a law firm on Long Island known as Shaw, Licitra, Esernio, Bohner & Schwartz? The one that receives so much praise, patronage and rewards from the heirarchy of people in power? If you need a lawyer or firm with influence and crooked political connections, this one is among the top ten.

                1 out of 5 stars LIARS & CHEATS.......2004-02-27

This book is supposed to chronicle Shaw's career as a legacy to his family. Some career. Him and his law firm through his partner George Esernio, receive patronage appointments nowadays from people like judge Frank S Rossetti who was appointed not elected by Gov. Pataki so that they could steal millions in fees from the elderly and infirmed while the families of those elderly people go starving.

1 out of 5 stars HEARTWRENCHING RAGS TO RICHES STORY:.......2004-02-26

I should have given this book five stars. Five for the amount of B.S. it contains. It never ceases to amaze me that in our modern society, the narcissistic people who are politically and socially corrupt, are hailed by themselves as hero's. Shaw confesses to having deceived his family for many years before finally writing his "legacy". What would make the reader now suddenly believe an admitted liar? I get the impression Shaw is still a "Schmuck" with a fountain pen". Only these days, he and his law firm steal more with those pens than an army of gangsters with guns.

                        Book Description

Learn from FeederWatcher Experts How to Feed and Attract Birds

Join Margaret Barker on a fascinating tour of FeederWatcher's backyards and bird feeders. Margaret captures the joy in the FeederWatcher's words as they explain how to attract the finches you've seen down the road, how to discourage the flock of Starlings you'd really rather went elsewhere, and how to live peacefully with squirrels and raccoons. You'll discover which birds you can attract and which ones will return year after year.

Each winter thousands of FeederWatchers identify birds attracted to their yards and record data about them. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology compiles the data into the largest existing database on backyard birds. No one has more hard facts on backyard birds than the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and no one knows more about attracting birds than the FeederWatchers.

FeederWatchers are participants in Project FeederWatch, a joint research and education project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, Bird Studies Canada, and the Canadian Nature Federation.

This is a fun book if you're trying how to make happy residents of the birds in your yard. It's practical, real world advice from people who are experts at the work to help and track our feathered friends.

                        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-03-10

I picked this book up not thinking it was going to be much but I was totally wrong. This book is chocked full of info on feeding, feeders, pretty much every North American bird that would ever visit your feeder, full color pictures and even a few recipes!
I would definately recommend this book to anyone wanting to get to know more about their feathered friends. A kick arse book!

This is a great book for anyone interested in learning about the birds who visit our backyard feeders. There are some good tips here--what types of feeders to select, what types of food to offer, how much cover is needed, etc. There is also a wonderful section on how to tell the difference between diffferent breeds of birds that look very similar, i.e. the House Finch and Purple Finch. Quite a bit of the book includes interviews with backyard feeder enthusiasts from different sections of the USA. I was pleased to see one from a town that is very close to my own.

The second half of the book lists, with photographs and commentary, the 50 most frequent visitors to backyard bird feeders in the USA. I really wish the list had included the top 100 (or more!) birds, as I'm often seeing birds at my feeders that are not on the list. Also, in some cases, there is only one picture of the named bird, and I much prefer it when there is a picture of both the male and female of the species in question.

It seems like I'm grabbing this book a lot though, so it has been quite a help to me.

THIS BOOK IS EASY TO READ AND UNDERSTAND. I KEEP IT BY ME WHEN I AM WATCHING THE BIRDS AT MY FEEDERS OR IN MY YARD. A VERY EXCELLENT BOOK.

Although this is a very attractive book with good size beautiful detailed pictures of birds, I was disappointed to discover that even though it is sponsored by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, it is not really " comprehensive ". For exanple it does not mention ospreys at all which nest in good numbers in my area. It briefly mentions bob whites which nest in my area, but there are no pictures of this bird or feeding information. There are many similar ommisions and some of the feeding information is limited and not always creative. For a newly published book of this type, I expected it to be " more state of the art ".
